This is sort of a controversial video so thank you for showing real life... many Americans get some sort of public assistance in their budgets, especially during the pandemic, and yes it needs to be shown to be normalized.
Hi Skye if you read this let me give you some tips from when I was a CNA, I know with 6 kids it may be hard but trying to do a Health Unit Coordinator at a hospital, or be a CNA at a hospital. They are 12 hours shifts but 3 days out of the week. Also, home health companies may assist you in finding more clients so applying to one of those as a 2nd job. Posting in the TBM group I am sure we could all help you find some local jobs to help increase your income as well. You got this! The first step is reaching out and you did the right thing.
I completely agree, I just wonder if any of her children are so young that it makes it difficult for Skye to progress with extra income, defo rooting for her happiness for her!
Yes I agree! I have a hard time with my 3 littles finding child care. Also Skye, maybe look into Medical Coding? With your background it would be a great job to have more of an 8-5 schedule and potential to work from home. Do you qualify for child care assistance as well?
Kerry Kerry I know! The budget mom really turned myself around. I found her 1 year ago and I couldn’t imagine where I would be. I hope she posts in the group so we can look into ways to help! I have been there no money after bills and food stamps so i totally get where she is at.
Yes this would be great if she can find child care assistance would help also if the children are very young I love this video and these post I know how this feels🌸
I’d like to pay her $7 expenses for her for a year. I’m very serious. I’m sure one lets her kids watch tv and the other is memory for her phone. If there’s a way I can get in touch to pay these, please let me know.
Congratulations Sky. 1st step reaching out to Kumiko for help. You’ve got this! I’m rooting for you. Your an amazing mom in setting a wonderful example for your children with planning, setting goals and working hard. You can accomplish your hearts desires. Keep us posted. Blessings to you and the budget mom team.
I am SO happy you FINALLY did a real life budget for someone receiving state assistance. I'm on disability this helped a lot!!! Please find more like this
Thank you for addressing low income earners. I was a single mom who struggled. I am totally on my feet now but there are many more people in this situation right now than we care to admit.
She needs to apply for income based repayment for her student loans. She would definitely get the $0 monthly payment. This will keep her out of default.
The problem with your analysis is this: Yes, there is an income problem. However, if she only increases income by a couple hundred a month, she is at risk for losing her state assistance benefits. She would need to make a larger jump in income to cover the difference in the state benefits plus increasing her budget. Also her $7 "luxury" expenses are pennies in comparison to the larger problem. I suggest keeping those so she can try to keep her sanity. Sounds like she doesn't have cable, so these are her entertainment items.
No she's not. They work with the people they help. Increasing will mean less food stamps, which is crazy because food is expensive, and it will also increase her portion of rent. But it evens out.
I kind of agree (my children and I went without cable, Netflix, etc. for years even without financial hardship so I can't totally agree). I'm not sure of the public transportation situation where she lives, but a bus pass would free up gas, car maintenance, car insurance, and windshield sticker costs. In Chicago, children under a certain age ride free and high school and college students get a discount or ride free.
The more income she makes the more she will have to pay for her portion or rent and she will lose some food stamps. They will not take away her housing but she could eventually end up paying the whole rent (if the full rent is less that 30% of her income) and she will lose food stamps if she brings in too much money. So if she started making $1,500 extra per month, she would lose her foodstamps and have to pay about $300 in rent....So, ultimately she would be making $1,500 extra per month but really she’s only making $200 extra. Yeah she’s more self sufficient but in order for her to be able to cover all the bills herself and pay off debt she is going to have to make a lot more money. They make it hard to get off government assistance once you get on it, most people can’t afford to get off assistance until after their kids grow up and move out.
@@domoniquesacco4964 You're basically saying what I was saying. My point is that she would need a MUCH larger income to offset losing benefits or it's not worth it to just make a few hundred extra month, or whatever that magical number is. I used to be in the same situation.
@A Cameron Any extra money you start earning when you are receiving a housing voucher or food stamps will lower the amount the Govt. gives you. You either have to make A LOT more money, or you have to stay at a low income to continue to receive your benefits.
since she is on public assistance, she would qualify for a "life line" phone, which should free up $60 for her budget. also, as someone else mentioned, any additional income she makes would have to be reported and they deduct that amount from her foodstamps and would probably affect her rental assistance. so while the goal of earning more is great, and definitely a stride in the right direction, unless she earns enough to get off assistance all together, earning more will initially not be of much help. when my kids turned 16, they went to work to help the family budget. if her kids are old enough (lawn, babysitting, etc) it would be good for them to help out. they would at least be able to help with their own clothes and school needs, etc. as for support for the kids, i'm assuming the father(s) are not paying support. if that is the case, why is she not drawing TANF? that is cash support for minor children.
Her phone was only $10 her internet was $60...does lifeline offer internet too? I know I have the lifeline phone to use at home as our 'home phone' if my kids need me.
If she receives sec 8 she cannot also get TANF...at least in NY. --but if she did go through TANF they would take father to court for child support and she would get up to $200/mth --for all 6 kids not per child- so idk that would work out better for her, again speaking from NY
@@thevictoriagoogin on the print out used, internet was $10 and phone $60. if she were to op to use the lifeline as a home phone for the kids/safety, etc, then she COULD do without a cell phone. i was a single mom in the 90s and managed with a home phone and an answering machine. if needed at work, babysitter or kids could call on my work line. cell phones are extremely convenient and most don't know how to manage without one, but if my income was that low, unless i had a free line, there's no way i would be paying $60 a month for one.
@@thevictoriagoogin when i was a single mom, i was in texas and you could receive both there. i just looked at a resource page for texas and it says you still can. i don't recall if she mentioned the state this woman lives in, and its obvious states vary, so it would be beneficial for her to check her state. but also, whatever tanf she received, i'm sure would take away some from her section 8 allotment. the government makes it so hard to dig out of the welfare hole, for those who are truly trying to and not play the system. another income source she needs to be thinking about, too, is at income tax time... low income child tax credit would help her cushion some of those sinking funds and her emergency money.
Tell sky to look into LIHEAP or some sort of budget billing with her utility and water companies. Heck, have her reach out to a local church for assistance with those fixed expenses for a time. Have her look into essential worker childcare vouchers in her state to put her children in daycare so she can work more. That program will exist through December 31. I also recommend getting enrolled in income based repayment if they are federal loans. Loans will be forgiven after a certain number of years- even if your payment each month is 0, it counts as a monthly payment towards that forgiveness. Next recommendation: save tax returns for birthdays and Christmas. Next recommendation: girl, you gotta get child support. Period, end of story. Her ex has an equal financial obligation to kids! It HAS to happen!
I say skimp on birthdays and Christmas this year, get a CNA license and quadruple her income. If the State pays for it, she can buy gifts. Yes, her assistance will be affected but that should give her the impetus to keep grinding and move up in her career and no longer need assistance. If the kids aren't disabled, they may need to work to help out.
I say keep the $7 per month in "luxury expenses". I don't think $7 is going to make any difference in the budget but will make her feel deprived. I only ever received housing assistance one and when I got a part-time job I lost that assistance. Moreover, I did not take home any additional income due to losing 20% to taxes, 30% to the increased rent and the other 50% to daycare costs. The system does not encourage people to get ahead. They penalize them for trying. If she makes an extra $300, her rent is likely to go up $100, she will lose $60 to taxes and who knows how it might affect her food stamps.
@@shola7987 I was thinking the same thing between a mental reprieve and honestly the fact that groceries come to your door! We have no idea how old her children are and it may be too difficult to cart them to the store & shop.
I used to be her..i used to be a single parent with a tiny baby. I used to be in govt assistance-for many yrs. I lived with my parents, went to school and worked nights. I did not keep up with my debts-especially student loans. Until recently. Fast forward- my son is 23yrs old, lives on his own, we have been off govt assit for years, know we are proud homeowners. As far has work. i work in the home healthcare, it is a low paying job but what helped me increase my income was picking up more patients with the agency i work with.
Congratulations! I did home healthcare years ago. I would pick up extra clients near my home on my off days and told them I was available for last-minute fill ins (I know that may not be feasible for Skye). I would suggest private duty for her and a CNA license with the goal of eventually working in a hospital.
It would be awesome if we could somehow coordinate a TBM support network. I live in NC and someone like me who is out of debt and further in my journey could mentor her IRL.
I’m from NC! Living in Texas now. I totally agree! I’m out of debt, been doing TBM system for about 2 years now. I can probably help if you have questions.
There is a mentor program in the TBM Facebook group! I have 2 people I talk to about budgeting and Ive met a third from mikos livestream on instagram. Love the people who follow miko. So many lovely people!! I love the positive space.
My husband and I are low income as well. For her Electric and Gas I would see if her county has a HEAP and/or PIPP program. We bought a house in December and were told the electric would be around $200..it was $400. I went in to get help because we couldn't afford it and now our electric is $97 every month. It has been a life saver.
Skye, if you're watching this I need to ask... do you have an iPhone and is the $1 for iCloud Storage? If that's the case, I would advise you do NOT get rid of that $1/month charge unless you know how to back up your phone. If you stop paying that, your phone will not backup to the cloud and if something stupid happens, you could lose all your pictures and other valuable information. If you have a working computer with iTunes, you can backup manually to there and forgo the $1/month storage but be sure to regularly plug your phone into your computer. If you don't have a computer with iTunes, keep paying the $1/month or research some other solution to ensure your information is kept safe. I know we're dealing with a low income but at the same time we shouldn't be so reckless as to cancel things for the sake of saving a $1/month without understanding why you're paying it in the first place.
Thank you for bringing that up. I've seen people lose valuable photos because they were so quick to trim their subscriptions. If the iTunes charge does indeed refer to iCloud Storage and she uses it to back up her phone, don't cut it unless you're not attached to your data. For me personally, backing up my data is considered a "need" and not a "want" like a streaming service. Before you cut anything, just ask "Why am I paying this? And what is the consequence if I cut it? Is there a cheaper alternative? Can I negotiate a cheaper rate?"
This is very much needed during these unpredictable times and with high volumes of people out of work relying on state assistance all over. Thank you for this video!
This is such a sad situation... hopefully she gets the help she needs and a better job. It’s so unfair to have such high students loans for such low paying jobs out there..praying for her and good job on helping her step in the right direction!
I’m glad you did this budget. I’m also really confused on the income. I worked as a CNA in MN for 18 months around 2006-2007 at a nursing home. Take-home pay was almost $10/hr, so working a typical schedule (avg 40 hours/week), my take-home on each bi-weekly paycheck was close to $800, not $299. Month income close to $1600, not under $600. Either she is being paid less than $5/hr, or she’s working less than 15 hours a week! For a family of 7 (6 kids plus mom), that $1600 would still put her well below the federal poverty line of $40,000, so shouldn’t affect her housing or food stamps, but would give her more budget flexibility.
If she's a single mom of 6 young kids, then she probably isn't able to work full time. I was a nanny for a family with 9 kids, and thinking back I didn't have any free time, and I was just a nanny, not a full time care giver.
As I listened to the income that this woman with 6 children is taking in, honestly, I was shocked. But there is always someone doing worse. For example, there are millions who are unemployed and wish they had 200 checks every two weeks as they have literally no money at all..but I will say this, I am always wishing I had more money and thinking of ideas to make more feeling like I do not make enough, and the truth is I really do need money, however at the same time, I will NEVER complain about my pay again after hearing this woman's story. Never will I complain again...
I love that you did this. My husband and I have been there. I hope in the future you do more of these videos. I’m a nurse and working on call as an aide you can pick up extra shifts and you get paid slightly higher because they don’t provide insurance, also working for an agency and picking up extra shifts helps too.
I suggest you and this woman look at another RUclipsr I follow: Oh My Goals. She does very well delivering food for GrubHub. Her husband lost his job and her full-time salary was cut. You pick it up from the restaurant and just drop it off on someone’s porch. You work when it’s convenient for you and they pay quite well and you can get tips. I’ll see if I can find a link to one of her episodes she talked about Grubhub, but I can’t promise anything. She’s well worth listening to anyway. All the best!
Since she gets assistance with rent and food, once she makes more money they will decrease what she gets, so she is going to be in the same situation and feel like she’s not getting anywhere
That was going to be my comment. More income = less food stamps and assistance. When your income is low food stamp assistance is a true lifeline. Such a hard situation especially considering the student loans, with the interest and potential for default. Once you’re in default then your tax return immediately goes toward that and like Miko said they can garnish her wages.
It does but with her household # her income threshold is higher so she can make a pretty substantial increase and not be severely impacted by reducing assistance.
Side hustles. I also look for more income. I babysit when I can and having so many kids. The kids can entertain each other and make the parent bring they're own lunch. See if you could clean one or two houses on the side. Cut someone's grass. Sometimes you dont want to do those types of side jobs but put some pride aside and make yo shmoney
Also like the budget mom says. Sell on fb. I make it a goal to post 2-3 items a day. Dont go and sell your whole house but thing you KNOW you and your kids are no longer using.
Miko, can you please show a budget for those of us on Social Security Disability, SSI or other monthly source of income with part time jobs to help supplement?
This is a real tough one. Some ideas to create wiggle room... look for furniture being given away. Spruce it up/clean it/fix it and then sell it through Marketplace or Craigslist. Because assistance is tied to income, start right away stocking a pantry in preparation for the dollar drop in assistance. The phone bill may be able to be reduced by using Red Pocket or Mint SIM cards. Their basic phone charges come closer to 20$ a month. Also if she is a good baker maybe baking and selling baked goods could help bring some extra money for sinking funds. The Internet cost is very reasonable and if it wasn't for Covid craziness I would consider dropping it for a few months. The local library could be a place to check for free/cheap entertainment too. Our library offers museum passes, movies, audiobooks, and art supplies. Also I think you can still buy plants/seeds with Foodstamps. Consider starting a garden in the spring, if that is possible where you rent. That budget is hard so if you read this you are doing great with what you have! Keep it up!
I think the $10 is the discounted internet for school age kids, that’s what it is in my area, they don’t do it for free. Such a good suggestion to look into.
Thank you for addressing this mom's needs. I wish someone had said those things to me while my kids were still little. Another thing that was not addressed was.... where did those student loans come from? Certainly she did not seek a degree to become a home health aide. I did that work while I was in college, and it certainly did not pay the bills. Finish that degree and begin a career! Please don't let that schooling go to waste! Even if you are tied at home for the moment with small kids, when everyone is in school, you must be ready to work. This will make every part of your life better! Best wishes to you in your journey, Sky! Hang in there - you are on the right track!
If these are government student loans - I would highly recommend calling them and getting on their income-based repayment program. Her income is so low that her "payment" would be $0. However, they will consider her status to be in "repayment" and will not let the loans go into default and ruin her credit. Her credit score may be important someday in obtaining a job or renting her own apartment without having to put down a huge security deposit or car insurance rates or hopefully buying a house.
My recommendation for Skye is to cut out her cell phone bill. She can bring her own phone to Qlink and they will give her a free government number with Unlimited calls and text plus 4.5 GB of data a month. She qualifies since she’s on food stamps. She would have $720 a year to put into her sinking funds for birthdays/ Christmas
I have a suggestion, I am also a single mom of two kids with low income for now ( because I don’t really have childcare and I also want to be present) and student loans. I decided to put aside my tax returns to pay off debt and invest. Then transitioning to a full time job. Also let go of some friends and who care what anyone thinks.
I feel for skye! I have had sleepless nights in the past and once i only had £3 left for the week for my kids to eat, but i got through it, skye and others can too 💪🏻
This series you have helping everyday people is amazing. Thank you for the invaluable information. With public assistance just be mindful of any income requirements. I increased my income and had to be taken off food stamps so just make sure that's included in the plan as well
-Any thought on getting child support? If she's on public assistance, usually the state (whichever state), will track down the father for the child support. -Any increase in income has to be reported. -How old are the kids? If there are teens, they could get part-time weekend jobs or little gig jobs. -What degree are the student loans for? Any chance she could use that education/include on her resume? As long as she is in default on her loans she won't qualify for federal financial aid. -I'm an in-home provider in Washington. My union offers additional training to increase pay. She could check with her state to see if she qualifies for additional training-check with the state's department of health and human services. -Agree w/ Miko on perhaps getting a higher -paying job. -Also check with local community college about retraining or state-paid retraining. Hope it all works out!
I love this because gives perspective. I used to live with that. When I see the people getting their financial goals I get happy but I always wonder their income and background. For some people like Sky is not possible to save 10,000 because she didnt even earn that amount. How far you go and save, and how quickly depends in your income first.
I’ve been looking for a post that reflects my situation and you’re the only one I’ve seen try to post a variety of situations. This is my situation in a lot of ways and I’m now convinced I can do this!!! Thank you so much for this and other post! 🥰
This is nice that you show this budget if you continue to keep in contact with her will absolutely help her. The program she is on can keep people in that poverty mind set I been there and made a plan to get off of section 8 the program raise your rent every time you make more money which keeps you in poverty if she keeps a positive mind set meaning no matter how much money I make I’m ready to get off this program also she can have an escrow account with the program where a portion of money from her rent goes in there to buy a home🌸
She could also get water, electric and internet paid with assistance and save there. Getting assistance when needed really helps with saving, getting ahead, and becoming self sufficient ❤️ I’m happy you talked about this!
Unfortunately for this poor lady the more you make it will decrease her subsidy, it’s a tricky situation. It’s a slippery slop for sure! She will need to make enough to cover all her expenses without subsidy. Hopefully she’ll find something and not rely on assistance.
I m listening to your video via headphones, and at first I thought my headphones don't work anymore bc I only hear you talking on my right ear... But during your intro the sound was just fine and the sound was stereo. I checked with other vids, so just wanted to let you know that there might be a technical sound issue
Were you watching on a phone and then rotated it? I noticed that once I rotated my phone to landscape and it immediately went away once I sat it straight up again. Did it again to confirm and that was the problem.
Does anyone else only hear Kumiko's videos in the left ear only? I'm not sure if it's just my computer settings, but her videos seem to be the only videos that do it :(
Angela Jasmine, Oh my goodness yes, I only hear her videos in the left ear only! I thought it was my earbuds getting old. I did notice that the music in her opening thing comes through both left and right. But as soon as Miko starts talking, it’s only in left ear. I bet she doesn’t know.
Would definitely like to see a video with people on SSI or RSDI income as well in the low income category.. I’ve already cut down a few of my fixed expenses for the next coming month like my car insurance & cable but still don’t have any $$ left over after and I’m behind on my cell bill $1,000 worth yet and need some help & recommendations and that’s pretty much my debt I have right now..
Hi Miko...Has Sky checked into forbearance and/or deferment for her loans? (I know you are aware of this information)They will do an income based rate, and sometimes you won't have to pay right now. Thank you for sharing this all too real situation. You're brave Sky for putting this out for all to see.
You did a great job with this! Insurance is a great industry. Most companies pay base salary starting between 15-20/hour and pay commissions. They also can have part time hours to work around the kids schedules. I understand the comments about the possible issue with increasing income and losing the support, so hopefully she can pivot into something where she will not need the support by having enough income. Best of luck to her.
Loved this video. I have 1 full year I split from my husband and have had to move back in with my parent's, I currently receive food stamps and am looking into finally finding a second job that will potentially make me earn way more money than my current part time job plus yo increase my monthly income. Yes that will probably completely cut my good stamps but like one commenter said there is always affordable soups and simple meals like rice & beans that can suffice. I finally feel more capable mentally to expand into the job market the split left me dazed & depressed but we must get back on our feet. Thanks for this video!
She can use Fetch Rewards and Ibotta, marketing surveys, and possibly a hidden talent such as restoring and selling old furniture to make extra cash. Being resourceful is the only way to get out of debt when you have that many kids and don't receive child support.
Wow! Skye, you are one heck of a woman! Just watching these numbers caused me anxiety... I wish you just the best! Keep at it and I promise it will all get better!❤️❤️
This is just a suggestion but she should switch her phone to metro and she would pay $60 and at the same time she would get amazon prime for free so she could still have amazon prime if she switches to metro by T-Mobile
As someone who has grown up in the spot of her kids and my parents still deal with poverty the truth is, she needs to get money under the table for now. She cant afford to loose her benefits but she needs money. No one likes to hear this but this is survival.
As many have mentioned, increasing her income would also most likely decrease the benefits that she gets. Unless all there clothing is being giving to them, there is nothing in that budget for clothes for 7 people. Granted mom can probably manage longer without getting 'new' - USED clothing at the thrift stores, but it does cost something, same with shoes and underwear. Does she get free medical for the children? I never can understand how the father(s) of 6 kids gets to walk away and not pay a cent for the child that they contributed towards. I am stunned though by the fact that she owes over $40K in student loans! I went to a 2 year RN program and got one small loan. No way did I need $40K. No way would a nurse aide certificate cost that much, so what did she train for and why isn't she doing that and taking advantage of those loans she made so she can have some money to pay them back? This is one of the problems of the ease to get these loans without knowing how you will have to pay them back and how much really of that loan went into the school activities and instead of on pizza, new clothing, going out and about, etc. My one son was using student loan to help pay for living expenses with his first wife. He and his new wife are still paying on those loans, 10 years later! There are many ways to do side hustles that can earn you something without a paycheck. One month I did enough CVS surveys that I earned $30 in CVS bonus bucks. That is rare, but things like that can be done. That goes a long way at the store for buying those things that can't be paid for by food stamps such as toothpaste, detergent, etc. The amount she is paying for Amazon Prime is the special price for people on Amazon. Unless she buys her food on there, and much more expensive than sales at local stores, why would she need a Prime membership as she surely doesn't have enough income to be buying things on Amazon. As much as the kids might want to see videos from Amazon that truly is a luxury item. Fifty years ago we grew up without a TV at times and never cable. If they have a DVD player, they can borrow DVDs from most libraries. You can also borrow books and some libraries have even more goodies. My main library will let people borrow fishing poles because it is right on a lake. I am sorry to see that she is in such a bind and the state doesn't make it easy to get out of it, not like the Social Security Ticket to work plan where you can try to work and increase your income without losing ANY benefits for a certain amount of time so you get your feet under you.
Now I have more knowledge about personal finance. I just subscribed to your channel. Big ups to everyone working effortlessly trying to earn a living while building wealth in this recession. I’m 47 and my husband is 51, we are both retired, no debts. We are currently living a frugal and financially savvy lifestyle and generating passive income even during this recessionary period. Our commitment to saving and investing in the financial market has enabled us to maintain this lifestyle and continue earning monthly passively through investment.
Very impressive!!! I'm going through a heartbreaking divorce right now and it saddens me. Right now, I could really use some investment advice or tips on investing. Last year I hesitated until the year ended without moving. This year I decided to try something because I'm very open to ideas on how I can invest. When I see your comment I believe that you have an experience in it that could be of great help to me. Hope you don't mind sharing?
I can relate somewhat to this. I don't have 6 kids, and I'm not on government assistance. But I do have a pretty low income in comparison to other people I've seen. I work 1 40 hour salary job. I already have all my medical and retirement and 10 percent savings all pulled out before I ever see my paycheck. It leaves me only a small amount after bills to put aside into cash envelopes and sinking funds. My goal is to get a better handle on my spending, to be prepared for unexpected expenses. I have no desire currently to find or create additional sources of income. The days are two short to spend every moment of them working for a dollar. I make up the difference by doing things like shopping second hand and having fewer expenses.
Sky can apply for an income based repayment plan from the lenders for the school loans. High chance she will get approved and her payment will be zero. This will give her peace of mind. I pray Sky will get more patients or find new employment opportunities 🙏🏼
You got this Skye. Many blessings to you. I pray you come out like pure gold. “But he knoweth the way that I take: when he hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold.” Job 23 : 10 KJV
I avoided my student loans for a few years and omg huge mistake! I only have 11,000 to pay now. Thanks to your system, I will be paying them off sooner than I thought
Hi, former state assistance recipient here. My current income in MS is 600.00 over the limit for foodstamps. ((I'm blessed, so many thousands of families are within 100 or less from getting help they need)) If my income suddenly dropped $600, I would only be able to receive $90 worth of foodstamps for a family of 3 (myself and 2 school children.) It's a trap, and once you get approved for assistance, it becomes very difficult to get out and get beyond the enormous gray area between "making enough to survive" and that ever lowering poverty ceiling.
I myself am a low income mother of 10 I do instacart, Doordash and ubereats these are all side hustles that pay well and I've been able to take my kids along. Also if she hasn't already applied for child care assistance its out there
We have lived with food stamps before and we also have 6 kids. Even though I was married, we both lost our jobs in the same year and at our lowest point only made a combined income of 14k for 1 year. I found the least confusing way was to draw a box on my budget sheet that has my SNAP for the month and the amount I actually used. Then on the next month I would have the roll over + the new month as my starting benefits. The only time I added food in the real budget was if I went over our $900 for the month. It was rare but did happen occasionally. I also used an expense tracker sheet for each of my past due bills. I had the usual tracker with a running balance but I also had one for my mortgage, electric, our cell phone bill. Because our basic bills were more than our income, these 3 were always in a past due state. Having this rolling tracker of payments and new billing cycles (with due dates) came in so handy when negotiating with companies. As old billing cycles were paid off, I would highlight them in green so I could see how many months behind I was also.
And when I say basic, I mean basic bills. We went 4 years with no home internet, tv, or streaming service. If we couldn't find it free on our cell phone then we didn't watch it. Our movie time incolved connecting our phone to the TV and waiting through ads and buffering. (Surprisingly, a lot of kids now days do not even know what buffering is.) We could not even afford trash service (country living) so we had to bag our trash and take it to work to throw it away.
hi, love the video but this is another one of your videos where your audio is only coming though on one side of the headset. It's left heavy nothing coming through the right side. I know it's not me. The intro jingle plays though both sides of the headset. but for whatever reason your mic audio isn't set to play though both sides of a headset. You may have to change the mic audio setting to mono, which forces the audio to come though on both sides equally
Was it mentioned that she’s working part time? There’s no way she’s working full time! 10 years ago when I worked at a daycare for $9 an hour, I brought home $295 a week! She’s making $299 biweekly! That’s illegal haha plus where is her children’s father/fathers!? In NJ if you don’t pay child support, you go to jail...
Kelly Post yea that part baffles me! I have $40k student loan and I’m not doing anything in my field but I’ve been working in the logistics industry bringing in income that doubles that. I hope she finds some kind of job with whatever skills she has to help her situation
College is a scam if you pick the wrong major or don't know to do internships or find connections. Also in some states the cost of college to average income is ridiculous.
Not the most glamorous but Walmart and Chickfila both pay ABOVE min wage in NC. $11 and $15 an hr respectively. Or look for an upscale retirement home. They pay companions and aides well above min as well with good benefits usually.
Those months where you get paid 3 times feel sooo good, and hopefully that helps give a little breathing room once or twice a year. Donating plasma is a great way to increase income and it is not taxed, if you are physically able to donate and are qualified to be a donor. Also, depending on how old the kids are, if they are old enough to help by getting a part-time job to help cover their own costs, that would help get closer as well. It would be great if we could get a follow-up of Sky’s situation 💚💙💜
How in the world is it possible to accumulate all that student debt, and only end up with a minimum wage job? Where are the childrens fathers - why are they not contributing to their childrens care? This woman needs to start working fulltime. I read under here that she might loose the benefits, but it would be possible to get a job that pays more than the state provides. She should aim for a job that pays 3K a month or more. I totally agree with Budget Mom, she will not grow without going after a better paid job, or a second job. Her budget will go in minus every month due to kids growing, they need clothes, school supplies, haircuts, her own expenses, drs appts etc.
Maybe she could pursue the children's father for child support? What did she go to college for, and can she go into that field to earn a higher salary?
In some states if the mother is on assistance then the child support will go directly to the state. Depending on where she lives she may get more from the state.
Also - this is assuming the father has resources to actually pay the child support. If he is disabled, unemployed, or doesn't make much income, there just aren't any assets to go after.
Hopefully she can get some of her student loans waived - hardship/forbearance. Also if she’s not already getting low-income discount on her electric and water bills that would help.
Im not sure how much she makes as a Healthcare aid. But some of these big box stores like wholefoods and target pay $15/hr. Double what the minimum wage is in her state. Also, Mint mobile is $15/mth for a phone for unlimted calls, texts and 4gigs. I would look around for a better paying job for the moment so you can get a little ahead and then make a more definitive career move. Necessity is the mother of invention. I would get the kids more involved in contributing financially or with chores so you have more time to work and gain more income. My mom worked two jobs and I babysat since I was 15 and before that I would cook, and clean along with my siblings so there was dinner always ready. We packed our own lunches, walked the dog and took the school bus or local bus to and from school. When there is a will there is a way to make it work.
Hi Kumiko! I'm from Lisbon, Portugal 🇵🇹. I loved your new budget book. How can I order it? Thank you so much for sharing with us your financial knowledge. See you soon in a next RUclips video 🎥 Best regards. Cristina 😊
@@thegeriatricmillennialbudg4736 thanks for your help. I joined my name and my email. Do I need to do something else or is just that? (I'm sorry my English lol)
Mint mobile is an awesome phone plan. $30/mo for unlimited when you pay a year at a time or I think $40 for month to month. So, she could likely reduce the phone bill by $20 and get to keep Amazon prime so she can keep some entertainment.
i get 160 a week plus i get food stands and a health card from united health care so im okay. i dont have to pay for electricity and i dont drive so dont pay for gas
I was a care aide single mother of two children. I suggest going for a job that’s NOT private. Private CA’s don’t get paid nearly as much as nonprivate. Our private CA’s make roughly $18 an hr as nonprivate makes $24-26.
Most electric companies provide assistance programs. Also there are cheaper phone companies for like $15/mo. I would check if they are available in your area and if the customer reviews are to your liking. This all could be short term until, as TBM suggested, she gets more income. Wage garnishment is real especially if you bury your head in the sand...did the loans lead to a degree that can be leveraged for more earnings? Just my 2 cents.
I live in NC- north of Charlotte and our local Aldi pays $14. (This is what one employee told me. Not sure on the reliability of their statement) and they’re always hiring and I’m sure they offer flexibility. Maybe suggest this to Sky 🤷♀️
This is a very tough situation. In PA, any money given to her would be considered an income and reducing the food stamps maybe even increasing her housing. It's a trap, so hard to get out of. I give her all the credit for trying to better their lives. But I know it's a daily struggle.
Also, that is a lot of food stamps. Maybe meal planning and better shopping habits would leave her extra benefits left to bake bread, cookies or jams to sell for extra cash. If she has a limited time to work due to no childcare options other than school, she could apply to provide childcare through the state for other mothers looking to work and the state can pay her.
The sound in this video and the last couple seem to be off. Its coming through very low with volume up all the way. My sound is just find watching other videos.
Depending what state she’s in or I’m assuming all states. If you’re getting section 8 and food stamps, she should qualify for cash aid. So I’m confused to why she doesn’t receive that. BUT , there must be a reason why she’s not getting cash aid especially for 6 kids. I wish you luck skye, it’s not easy but it can be done. ❤️
I'm a single mother of 2 I work full-time but my income is low so I'm able to get assistance with food and child care. I live with my mother but still pay rent. I had my paycheck garnished 15% due to not paying student loans. I'm now on income based payment for the loan. My payment is 0 and it's no longer in default.
This is sort of a controversial video so thank you for showing real life... many Americans get some sort of public assistance in their budgets, especially during the pandemic, and yes it needs to be shown to be normalized.
Yes! I work with so many low income families and I was excited to see this talked about!
K@@lisacampbell7217
We are barely making ends meet and can't get any assistance. So I'm just gonna cry and pull my big girl pants on and find a second job
M Rydalch love this advice!! Such a great platform to bring new ideas for people!!
Same. I'm happy to give her a month's worth of her sinking funds.
@@verhanikawillhelm she has a channel on here, it's called Skye's Life.
Please find more like this
I know it’s something that is rarely done on RUclips that’s why I started doing videos
Thank you for addressing low income earners. I was a single mom who struggled. I am totally on my feet now but there are many more people in this situation right now than we care to admit.
It is unfortunately. Me too.
@@juliannaokike3359Me too. Struggling badly.
All the people giving suggestions in this comment section is heartwarming.
I know right? So nice to see people trying to actually help and not judge.
She needs to apply for income based repayment for her student loans. She would definitely get the $0 monthly payment. This will keep her out of default.
words out of my mouth!!
That’s what I was going to say. I’m on the IBR plan and it’s been a godsend
thats why i do as im on repayment plan since im on goverment assistance
Very good advice
With 6 kids amazon prime video is probably a must especially with no cable.
@@shola7987 I was thinking the same thing between a mental reprieve and honestly the fact that groceries come to your door! We have no idea how old her children are and it may be too difficult to cart them to the store & shop.
Sandy Seibel Hager a very distorted system when you are encouraged not to get ahead.
Government assistance is a broken program. It needs to be totally redone.
Exactly. She'll have to muster up the encourage herself.
She would make way more money watching other people’s kids in her home, healthcare background would be a plus.
I totally agree
and she should have her house already set up for child care
people sleep on the babysitting funds.... an extra 30/50 a week can really keep you afloat
I love this 😍 helping others become a better version of themselves
I hi
P
Mom
You can back up to google photos for free, even on apple products. Google has a lot of great free products you can use.
Congrat Skye! Kumiko is the best person to get everyone straight with their finances. Very glad you got in contact with her.
Love what you do.. You are soo inspiring. Wish we have more ppl like you 😊
Since she gets assistance with rent and food, once she makes more money they will decrease what she gets, so she is going to be in the same situation and feel like she’s not getting anywhere
Also getting a second job, may mean her children would be unsupervised. That would result in the possible lost of child custody.
I would also appreciate this
I agreed with that too
This is a real tough one. Keep it up!
If she is low income and had school aged children, she may qualify for free internet!
I think the $10 is the discounted internet for school age kids, that’s what it is in my area, they don’t do it for free. Such a good suggestion to look into.
@@johannakline2899 yea, it probably depends on location
This video for low income earners definitely was needed in addressing. I want to say to Sky that you deserve it and I hope everything is better!
Unfortunately for this poor lady the more you make it will decrease her subsidy, it’s a tricky situation. It’s a slippery slop for sure! She will need to make enough to cover all her expenses without subsidy. Hopefully she’ll find something and not rely on assistance.
What a detail budget! That's exactly how we should do it. I watched the whole thing ♥️
I m listening to your video via headphones, and at first I thought my headphones don't work anymore bc I only hear you talking on my right ear... But during your intro the sound was just fine and the sound was stereo. I checked with other vids, so just wanted to let you know that there might be a technical sound issue
Thank you!!
Yes, the last video was the same way even on the speakers on my computer.
I have the same issue.
Were you watching on a phone and then rotated it? I noticed that once I rotated my phone to landscape and it immediately went away once I sat it straight up again. Did it again to confirm and that was the problem.
Tyari the same happened with my phone. Switched to tablet and the one earphone thing. Hopefully itll be fixed since Kumikos aware now.
I'm happy miko tried to help..the first thing the mom needs to do is get a hold of the baby dady (s)..i would not be struggling alone.
Oh yes it will. I have taken my ex back to court so many times. An still waiting
Does anyone else only hear Kumiko's videos in the left ear only? I'm not sure if it's just my computer settings, but her videos seem to be the only videos that do it :(
I’ve been experiencing the same thing
🙋🏽♀️
Same
Angela Jasmine, Oh my goodness yes, I only hear her videos in the left ear only!
I LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS!! you are making a BIG DIFFERENCE
She can use Fetch Rewards and Ibotta, marketing surveys, and possibly a hidden talent such as restoring and selling old furniture to make extra cash. Being resourceful is the only way to get out of debt when you have that many kids and don't receive child support.
Cheers to getting over the fear factor!
I'm early and you are amazing. I love you, thank you for this!!!
“But he knoweth the way that I take: when he hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold.”
Job 23 : 10 KJV
I avoided my student loans for a few years and omg huge mistake! I only have 11,000 to pay now. Thanks to your system, I will be paying them off sooner than I thought
Love these type videos!
Hi, former state assistance recipient here.
My current income in MS is 600.00 over the limit for foodstamps. ((I'm blessed, so many thousands of families are within 100 or less from getting help they need))
If my income suddenly dropped $600, I would only be able to receive $90 worth of foodstamps for a family of 3 (myself and 2 school children.)
It's a trap, and once you get approved for assistance, it becomes very difficult to get out and get beyond the enormous gray area between "making enough to survive" and that ever lowering poverty ceiling.
This is a great video especially with incomes being tighter for a lot of people these days. I even endured the 8 annoying ads within the video.
How do you have $40,000 in student loans and have a job that is bringing in less than $600 PER MONTH??!!
@@brroookkeee it was mentioned that she worked nearly full time and NC minimum wage is $7 and some change :(
College is a scam if you pick the wrong major or don't know to do internships or find connections. Also in some states the cost of college to average income is ridiculous.
Ashley Trott It just doesn’t add up even with 30 hours at $7 an hour to take home $295 every two weeks. Something is missing
How would increased income effect her assistance?
Thanks for the videos really helpful! : )
Not the most glamorous but Walmart and Chickfila both pay ABOVE min wage in NC. $11 and $15 an hr respectively. Or look for an upscale retirement home. They pay companions and aides well above min as well with good benefits usually.
I sooooo appreciate this!
Idk exactly how it works but perhaps a second job like food delivery could be an option? Then it’s on your own schedule.
6 kids where’s the dad
Cristina 😊
budgetbypaycheck.com is her website for her new book that is taking preorders on September 15th. Hope this helps!
@@thegeriatricmillennialbudg4736 thanks for your help. I joined my name and my email. Do I need to do something else or is just that? (I'm sorry my English lol)
Multilagoin No worries. I think that should be enough though!
@@thegeriatricmillennialbudg4736 thanks for your help 😊
Mint mobile is an awesome phone plan. $30/mo for unlimited when you pay a year at a time or I think $40 for month to month. So, she could likely reduce the phone bill by $20 and get to keep Amazon prime so she can keep some entertainment.
$299 not enough money, she needs more assistance. I think she can apply for low income for gas and electricity. 🙏🏻
You rock budget mom 💪💪
i get 160 a week plus i get food stands and a health card from united health care so im okay. i dont have to pay for electricity and i dont drive so dont pay for gas
Need more videos like this
I was a care aide single mother of two children. I suggest going for a job that’s NOT private. Private CA’s don’t get paid nearly as much as nonprivate. Our private CA’s make roughly $18 an hr as nonprivate makes $24-26.
How do you go about getting your personal budget reviewed? I have been struggling to fix mine and we are in the low income bracket.
As my income increased they took my section 8 and this happen in 2013 and I don’t receive food stamps either and I’m disabled
Is there a way to submit a budget for this type of video? I could really use the help!!
The sound in this video and the last couple seem to be off. Its coming through very low with volume up all the way. My sound is just find watching other videos.
To many damn ads for at 18 min video, you don’t need to put 8 ads
Depending what state she’s in or I’m assuming all states. If you’re getting section 8 and food stamps, she should qualify for cash aid. So I’m confused to why she doesn’t receive that. BUT , there must be a reason why she’s not getting cash aid especially for 6 kids. I wish you luck skye, it’s not easy but it can be done. ❤️
I know in ohio you are only allowed 3 years of TANF(cash assistance) so once you use up your 3 years in a lifetime you dont qualify no more
She needs to get support from these kids dad. I was curious also about child care. Are they older kids?
She can do instacart grocery delivery or door dash. This is for anyone with low income who needs more money to save or pay debt
