Her comment about the love feels more questionable when you see the full quote about actually loving a thing because you made it. Idk if they meant that as a love like that .
"Hunters have told me about the church. About the gods, and their love. But... do the gods love their creations? I am a doll, created by you humans. Would you ever think to love me? Of course... I do love you. Isn't that how you made me?"
Shes doing a comparison of she loves you but she was made to so wouldn't man be made to love a god that created them. They could be indifferent to humans because we were just its creation but no matter what we will still love them due to our design
Basically to me it's unsettling but in a different way. Although Gerhman is still disgusting since the doll can only be seen alive with at least 1 Insight point so Gerhman has been possibly passing her off for those other "reasons" knowing she's sentient and can think while others probably don't

The way I see it, the Doll is pretty much a Victorian mourning doll, a doll made to help grieve a lost child. I prefer to believe that Gerhman and Maria's relationship was one of a father-daughter, mentor-student. When Maria committed suicide, Gerhman coped by creating the Doll, and when the Moon Presence brought her to life, it resembled nothing of the daughter figure he once loved. Gerhman does not care what we do with Doll because it is a constant unbearable reminder of Maria's suicide and his failure at protecting her. I think this is much more in line with the tragedy of this game and serves as a parallel to the Great Ones and their own grief of lost children, particularly Kos and the Orphan.

It is worth noticing, as some in the comments have already noted, that despite the absolutely maidenless amount of thirst wich led to the Doll's creation... Gehrman is never seen with her. He only mentions her once, never speaks to her, he's never even seen in the same room as her. This implies that after the deed was done and the Doll was made, he eventually realised she lacked all the qualities of her model, due to being based on his fantasies of Maria rather than the actual person.
Wich leads to the possibility of him actually realising that said fantaisies were false and objectifying, a fact wich, given his tendencies for guilt and self loathing (or at least self-depreciation), must have gotten him quite disgusted with himself, rightfully so of course.

Reading the 'use her freely' line in a non sexual light, it could be about how traditionally, women societally are forced into a role in which they are forced to provide free labor (cooking, cleaning, taking care of children, being sympathetic to the woes of her husband while voicing no woes of her own). The doll being a motherly caring type and nothing else really fits that theme. It reminds me a lot of the article "I want a wife" by Judy Brady.

For centuries women have been forced to marry men, have children, and be caretakers of the house, children, and even their husbands while being given no free will to choose if they wanted to have that life or not. While some women do choose to be housewives and nothing else, many women don't because that's not what they want, while years ago they would have been horrifically shamed or abused into being that (and again in some places a lot of women still are being forced to be housewives with no choice in the matter)

I don't think Gherman meant for her to be subservient when he made the doll, it's stated that he missed having Maria around, and thus made the doll in her image. Perhaps this is what Maria wore when the hunt was off, but either way Gherman grew weary and disappointed with the doll because she wasn't like Maria, as such he doesn't really talk or spend time with her. I think that the moon presence gave the doll life and gave her this subservient personality as a means of keeping hunters in line when they pass through the dream, as well as a means of ensuring Gherman knows he has no control here and serves to help new hunters, not meant to spend time with his old apprentice.

The only point where women, specifically, become relevant is when we find out that the Great Ones are incapable of having children by their own means and the humans decide to use that fact to fulfill their curiosity and women JUST SO HAPPEN to be the version of our species that produce children.

The way Gehrman speaks of the doll gives off feelings of disappointment. The doll was never going to be the replica of Maria he hoped it would be. So its safe to say when it came to life in the Hunter's Dream, Gehrman was likely saddened by the fact that he will never be able to express his feelings to the real Maria who is long dead. And the doll cannot ever be a substitute for her.
I think thats where his disdain and lack of care for the doll comes from. He doesnt care how the player uses it because to him its just a reminder of his regrets. Of which there are many, as his sleep talking and the Old Hunters DLC imply.

The doll is wearing the same outfit as the “winter lantern” enemies in the game, and I wonder what that’s supposed to imply about either party, be it design, or lore-focused intent.

An interesting point was made a few comments above- Winter Lanterns appear only within the nightmare and look to be a vile twist on the only 2 things the player would find comforting in Bloodborne-
      The Doll and The Messengers

Gehrman created this doll for himself. true it sounds disgusting but allowing hunters to "use" her kinda helps them on their hunt.
hunting beasts once humans, monstrosities from nightmares and eldrich creatures. While witnessing suffering of men woman and children in it's hunt.
Having a comforting figure after all of that possibility helped a lot of hunters to maintain sanity for longer preventing more suffering.

    • @nishihii

the winter lanterns are a warped version of the doll, they take one of the only things the player finds comforting in the dreary world and turn it into something to scare them- like a nightmare. at least this is how i see it.
it is also worth mentioning that there are messengers stuck to their heads and they sing a lullaby the doll was supposed to sing but got cut out of the game, you can still find the voice line though.

@@nishihii I have never been sure if the lanterns are a warp version of her, or if she is a warped version of the lanterns. In a way, both bring you to deeper levels of madness, but has a sane mind ever produced anything of true significance?

She is still a doll, the player's descent to insanity brings her to life, in their mind ("do with her what you will"), like a refuge in a nightmare, just like the hunter's dream.

I quite like the doll. The world of yharnam is a damn nightmare and seeing a friendly face between hunts is the only thing keeping me from losing my shit to tilt and rage at losing 8k blood echos for the 5th mfing time cause an enemy snuck me at low health.
As for Gerhman, I never got the vibe he was a perv. Just a lonely old man who could use the company, however brief. Kinda sucks he up and disappears for most of the game

Let’s not forget that when you find the doll in the abandoned work shop she’s still animated and has a third of umbilical chord as a pick up. Either the moon presence used her as a surrogate or gherman being the surrogate child of the moon presence (up to interpretation) impregnated the doll himself
