I always saw Mihawk vs Luffy in Marineford like a teacher testing a student, Mihawk's apology to Shanks is him basically saying "I'm not going to just let him pass for free", it doesn't mean the teacher is using all of his knowledge and going specifically for the kill

The way I took mihawk going all out was he truly was putting a lot if not full power behind his swings but he wasn’t actually trying that hard to hit luffy with them just to make luffy worry. But with vista I feel it was the other way because he was a swordsman he was holding back on his strength while testing vistas skill.

    • @kashaxx

This is my problem with the Mihawk and Shanks debate. The leaps in logic Shanks' stans use are genuinely crazy. To avoid admitting Shanks is weaker, they use giant leaps in logic, such as haki is its own fighting style, despite haki being a supplementary power source. A supplemental power source every top-tier swordsman already uses. So somehow, Shanks uses a power that all of his contemporaries use, but that is enough to separate himself and not them? Meanwhile, swordsmen like Fujitora and Law, who both use unique abilities, and their blades, being used almost exclusively as conduits for their abilities, are still swordsmen, but Shanks is not? All because he uses a power everyone else does? That doesn't make sense.
This logic seeps into other debates involving Shanks. His stans also refuse to accept that Kaido is superior despite the manga repeatedly highlighting Kaido's individual strength time and time again. In a straight-up fight, the narrator says to bet on Kaido; or Kaido himself is flat-out called the strongest pirate by Killer (LOOK AT AUTHOR'S INTENT). And the multiple external pieces of information crowning Kaido as the mightiest.
The Mihawk vs Shanks debate is tiring because one side refuses to admit they're more leaps in logic to crown their Shanks as superior. A Mihawk vs Shanks debate is really Mihawk's strength vs Shanks' popularity.

    • @itssome_gent1311
      @itssome_gent1311 Год назад +3

Something on the Kaido being superior it's that Shanks and Kaido haven't fought eachother all out seriously as far as we know. Also although Killer says he's the strongest pirate he atp still has yet to go up against Blackbeard, Shanks and Bigmom himslmelf. Kid fought a BM commander, they didn't even get to see Shanks when Kid lost his arm and they've never seen Blackbeard or his crew ever I don't even think they've spoken

    Why Mihawk beats Shanks.
No this isn't a post based on the lore implications that Mihawk would beat Shanks considering they are both swordsmen yet Mihawk holds the title of the world's strongest swordsman. No this is taking a deeper look into all discernable information and feats they've both shown (maybe just a little lore will be used, we'll see)
So both of these characters have shown the debatably longest range of each type of Haki:
    • Mihawk- Used Armament haki internal destruction to cut the frozen tidal wave/tsunami at Marineford
    • Shanks- Used Conquerors haki infusion to scare Greenbull across Wano
    • Side note- Enel showed the furthest range of observation haki (although his was amped by his devil fruit more than just the mastery itself)
Now, why does Mihawk beat Shanks? To put simply... stamina; Shanks has to use to much Haki to keep up with Mihawk that he could never last long enough.
Take for instance, when it comes to power, Mihawk is able to deal stronger attacks without effort, as his "world's strongest slash" he sent across Marineford to "test" Whitebeard did not use emission or internal destruction. We know this because of the difference between the slashes. When he cut the frozen tsunami, there wasn't a flying compressed air flash, the slash was more or less invisible, the cut appeared on the ice and gradually traveled through it before cutting it. However, the world's strongest slash sent a compressed air slash that even Zoro was able to preform at a lesser degree since Skypiea against Ohm. So casually Mihawk can attack at that level casually without utilizing higher forms of haki.
Shanks on the other hand, has only shown that level of power with infusion when he clashed with whitebeard. We know he was using infusion because the clouds split, exactly how Oda has always shown Conquerors haki at a Supreme level clashing.
Conquorer's haki and Infusion uses more stamina than Armament haki and internal destruction. While Infusion would most likely be stronger than Mihawk's base armament haki, Mihawk can then step it up and close that gap with ID, which is contextually more dangerous than infusion which just increases attack power, while ID ignores and bypasses defense all together. Shanks would then need to use armament imbuement haki to then close the gap and keep up, however Shanks would be using way to many forms of haki as buffs:
    • Infusion just to close the gap and most likely surpass Mihawk's base that is stronger let alone that Mihawk's sword is of a higher grade than Shank's and subsequently stronger itself
    • Armament to close the gap of Mihawk's internal destruction
    • More infusion to prevent Mihawk's internal destruction from reaching him
    • More conquorer's haki to cancel out Mihawk's observation
Versus Mihawk, who's blade is permanently black, therefore does not need to use any stamina to use Armament haki and either none or a negligible amount of stamina to utilize emission and/or internal destruction.
Even if we assume with all that, Shanks is temporarily stronger. Shank's only win condition is if he can finish the fight quickly, which, there's no evidence suggesting the power gap would be large enough to do so, nor Mihawk lacking in stamina for extended durations.

@@Chaosking707 strongest swordsman doesn't mean you are the strongest person ever. Also, strongest includes both power and skill in the potential duel. It doesn't have to be an even distribution of both, one can be more skillful than the power they can generate and vice versa. Whatever allows them to win in a fight against someone else whom also uses a sword. So let's say in the instance someone like whitebeard decides to pick up a sword, while he might be able to generate the most power, he doesn't have the skill with a sword specifically to beat mihawk. Tashigi might (not saying she does) have better swordplay than mihawk, but would still lose due to the gap in power and speed. Hakuba might be faster, but mihawk is fast enough and has good enough reaction to keep up that that advantage wouldn't be enough to be a deciding factor but Mihawk's superior strength would secure him the victory.

I think deep down the main reason people want Shanks to be stronger than Mihawk aside from them just liking the character more, is because Shanks is to Luffy what Mihawk is to Zoro. And assuming Luffy and Zoro both defeat Shanks/Mihawk respectively at roughly the same time, doesn't that mean that Zoro is stronger than Luffy? That's what people want to avoid.
Then the only three explanations left are:
    1) "Mihawk may be slightly stronger than Shanks, but the small amount of difference will be eclipsed by how much effort Zoro will put into beating Mihawk compared to Luffy beating Shanks, thus keeping the powerscaling consistent between Luffy and Zoro. As Zoro put in way more effort than Luffy to defeat a barely stronger opponent." This kinda makes Shanks look too weak and Luffy too strong, as it implies Luffy will beat Shanks using anything less than extreme diff.
    2) "Luffy will beat Shanks wayyy before Zoro will beat Mihawk, so there's still a progression with Mihawk, the stronger opponent, coming later in the story." While this is possible it just doesn't seem very likely, considering we've got 2 1/2 years left and both of these things narratively should really come before Laugh Tale/the final war against the WG, imo.
    3) "Mihawk is stronger than Shanks. Luffy/Zoro will defeat their respective guys at roughly the same time, both using extreme diff. And Zoro will just be stronger than Luffy for a short while, before another fight comes along shortly after (Blackbeard) and re-establishes Luffy as stronger by the end of that fight." This is the explanation that honestly I'm going with for now, but you can see why this one hasn't really caught on as it requires to accept a bunch of other headcanons first.
Great video tho, didn't mean to write a whole ass essay😅

    1. I don't doubt that Shanks is a swordsman, or that swordsmanship is a significant enough aspect of his style to be a swordsman. But there's no reason why Mihawk can't be stronger at swordsmanship than Shanks or any other swordsmen, while Shanks is still stronger as an overall combatant because of his use of other combat skills besides swordsmanship. Zoro being a superior and stronger at swordsmanship does not in any way contradict the notion that Shanks could be a more powerful overall combatant.
    2. Hakiman - I would not refer to it as hakiman personally. But Shanks has simply, up to this point, shown far superior haki to Mihawk. It's not even close. Shanks has shown the ability to see 10+ seconds into the future, something that blows away even the best future sight we've seen from various other characters. There's no question Mihawk will excel at haki as well, but we can't just automatically assume he will have that level of haki. Shanks' relaxed haki had Jozu groaning, the same Jozu who stood up to Mihawk at marineford, and whose inferior also stood up to Mihawk in the same war. There was no reaction towards Mihawk's haki from either Jozu or Vista. I agree that haki is a big part of any fighter in One Piece. But Shanks takes it far beyond the normal concept of usage. Mihawk having excellent observation haki would hardly be surprising. Mihawk having king's haki would hardly be surprising. But this doesn't in any way make it likely that he will be on par with Shanks in haki.
    3. Strength vs. skill. Really, all your argument here suggests is that sometimes, the Manga uses the word skill to describe strength. Both strength and skill are words that can and often are used to mean multiple different things. It doesn't mean every time you say strength, you mean physical strength. It doesn't mean every time you say strength, you mean overall power. It doesn't mean every time you say skill, you mean a specific skill a character has. It doesn't mean every time you say skill, you mean strength. But what Shanks > Mihawk fans are talking about when they say skill, is a specific skill, and that is a mastery of swordsmanship style, techniques, footwork and all the things that commonly go into specific swordsmanship mastery. Similarly, even in our world, we often use the word strength when really we're talking about a specific skill or attribute. 'He's a strong hitter' in baseball is very commonly used when talking about the skill a player has with the bat. It is also commonly used when talking about a power hitter. It can be used for both.
    4. I don't really see how you effectively countered the Jozu and Vista points. You said if Mihawk could have defeated Jozu in that slash, he would have. But this doesn't make any sense. Mihawk intentionally sent this slash to Whitebeard with the intention of measuring how they compare. It may have not been his absolute most powerful technique, but characterizing it as effortless for him is also a stretch when Mihawk himself intended to use it as a measure of how he compares to Whitebeard.
The main thing here, is that Shanks one shotted Eustass and Killer at the same time. Even if Jozu is tougher defensively, Eustass is an entirely different level stronger than Jozu. And Jozu didn't only block this because of his durability. He is specifically shown using his arms to deflect the blast.
For Vista, you involve quite a bit of speculation here. You say he was holding back - this was literally never stated and just minutes before that said he wasn't going to hold back in going after Luffy. Vista is his obstacle in doing so. You even say Mihawk effortlessly held Vista at bay. Okay, but why did Vista not effortlessly keep Mihawk at bay in the same way?
You say Mihawk was staring at Vista the entire time, but this too is speculation. He's shown staring at Luffy for one panel. Mihawk vs. Vista was happening for more than a chapter.
And, fact of the matter is, Eustass and Killer combined are significantly more powerful than Vista. Shanks could be holding back and still easily defeat Vista with no or low difficulty. This is not the energy Mihawk had with Vista whatsoever. Mihawk said he would be a fool to not know about how skilled Vista is, then fought evenly with him, and then suggested to postpone their duel.
    5. I feel the Mihawk => Shanks arguments have a couple of double standards. When the notion of different interpretations enter the equation - i.e does the title mean stronger overall or stronger only at swordsmanship, or what 'strength' really means here, it's 'No, it says strength. It's to be interpreted at a surface level with no context'. When speculation about Shanks' other abilities, or when it's brought up how Shanks effectively may have disqualified himself for the running publicly due to his arm, it's 'No, this is what we were told on the surface, no speculation allowed'
But when it comes to why Mihawk couldn't cut down Jozu, all of a sudden context matters. It's not Jozu's overall strength that matters, but a specific ability tailored to counter Mihawk's sword slash. It doesn't matter that Eustass is stronger than Jozu, it only matters because Jozu has a specific skill that's measured outside of overall strength. This also directly contradicts your point on strength vs. skill. Even though this is just a specific skill Jozu has, according to your strength = skill argument, this would also just count as Jozu's strength. Jozu's strength nullified Mihawk's strength.
When it comes to Mihawk saying he isn't going to hold back against Luffy, speculation is not allowed. 'Oh maybe Mihawk meant this', despite nothing actually being stated to this effect. In fact, your argument practically proposes it's okay for us to believe that Mihawk said one thing but meant something entirely different when saying he wasn't holding back against Luffy. But it's wrong for Shanks > Mihawk fans to take a 'strength' interpretation as simply meaning stronger at swordsmanship, when this is literally how the word is sometimes used in our world as well? 'No ifs ands or buts' when Oda says one thing (and notably in a series where he very often puts the validity of titles in question), but when Oda says something else, it's 'Nah that's not what Mihawk meant'?
So which is it? Are we taking things at surface level, or is context allowed to be thrown in?
    6. One point I like to mention in this discussion is, I feel Mihawk => Shanks fans really undermine what sword skill really is. Under your definition, what even is the point of being a swordsman? The actual skill has no real impact on what it means to be a swordsman under this definition. A character like Kenpachi could come into the universe of One Piece with no actual skill, and just because he'd defeat everyone, he'd be the strongest swordsman. What's the point then?
I just find it really hard to believe that Oda, a Japanese born individual where swordsmanship skill is an incredibly honored trait where people spend decades mastering sword styles, foot work and techniques, and a Mangaka who naturally has been inspired by many Japanese works, would consider sword skill really nothing more than brute strength. That Kenpachi could come into One Piece with a pool noodle, call it a sword and then beat everyone just by flexing reiatsu, and be considered the strongest swordsman.
It also means that Kaidou could pick up a sword randomly one day and decide to start using it in all of his match ups, and then he'd automatically be the strongest swordsman. Then what's so great about Zoro's title? Is there then really any difference between world's strongest swordsman and just world's strongest combatant?
    7. Another point that I don't feel this video addresses - the biggest reason Shanks > Mihawk fans think Shanks is more powerful, is simply because Shanks is Luffy's benchmark. Even now with Luffy being yonkou level, Shanks has avoided directly meeting Luffy. Shanks is the character Luffy ties to his goal of becoming pirate king.
On the other hand, Zoro vs. Mihawk is very likely to occur around the same time, at the latest. Luffy will not be surpassing Shanks until about the same time, if not after, Zoro surpasses Mihawk. This is the most likely occurrence within the narrative of the story. Zoro vs. Mihawk will essentially have to occur in the epilogue for this not to be the case, and that simply doesn't make any sense.
All in all, I will say this: your video definitely makes some fair/good points. And I never blame anyone for thinking Mihawk is stronger. There are some valid arguments on that side, and despite everything I said, the fact remains that Oda could be thinking the way Mihawk => Shanks fans interpret it. I have no proof that he isn't. But there's no proof he is either. And Shanks > Mihawk fans make good points too
I don't think we're really going to know for sure until later in the series. I think when Zoro vs. Mihawk occurs will be very telling.
Either way, I love your input regarding One Piece. Haven't had a chance to check out most of your videos yet, but will be doing so. So far, I've enjoyed what I've seen
Edit: I forgot to mention, but I feel like both joyboytheories and hiddenisland have made good points on Shanks being > Mihawk. Joyboy mainly discusses the validity of news and titles within One Piece and how the information is often manipulated or come to be believed. Hiddenisland discusses how very possible it is that at one point, Shanks was primarily a swordsman but once he got his arm cut off, he stopped pursuing the swordsmanship title and decided to compete with Luffy for being Pirate King. I'm paraphrasing on both, but these are more or less part of the points they were making. You may have already watched these videos, but didn't see anything in this video that would counter their points. In fact I think hiddenisland's video may have been made after this

The funny part about the arguments used by Mihawk's haters when it comes to the Marineford war is that... If we use these same arguments with other characters who have fought in this war, they become utterly ridiculous. For example, I could argue that Sengoku is weaker than Fishman Island Luffy just because he didn't destroy a weaker Luffy (unable to defeat a pacifista at the time) with his punch. I could also argue that Doflamingo is weaker than any potent haki user just because he clashed equally with Crocodile (or didn't cut him), the same Crocodile who feared Luffy's wet fists at the beginning of the war. The Marineford war is an absolute mess when it comes to powerscaling. You can't use the Marineford war to measure the power of Doflamingo, Sengoku, or Mihawk. Same thing for the Navy admirals : why did they never knock out Luffy when they hit him ?

There's nothing to say Shanks is stronger than Mihawk. It's just his portrayal that gives us the impression that's more to him than meets the eye.
I'll give you some of my reasoning..and it's a lot to write..Of course, that's how i picture it, so it's a lot of headcanon.
Firstly, Oda stated right after the time skip that Luffy,Zoro and Sanji have different affinities for haki. Zoro's armament, Luffy's conquerors and Sanji's observation..
This affinity in my eyes dictates your potential in using your haki.
Conquerors is the strongest, and i don't think Zoro will be able to use it at the level of Luffy due to his affinity lacking..
That means he'll need to improve his armament to its perfection, because he can..That's how you get black blades.
If i don't spin it like this i can't grasp the idea that Rayleigh doesn't have a black blade, or even worse, a guy that's a pure swordsman, with the strongest haki of his era, the King of the pirates, Gol D Roger..and even Whitebeard i might add ass a sidenote.
Why is that Roger and Whitebeard don't have their weapons black? Well, because they are experts in advanced conquerors. That's how my headcanon goes.
In my eyes that already puts Mihawk a little lower in the power scaling debate.
Shanks is a pure expert of advanced conquerors..
Now, on to the worlds strongest titles that don't mean much....Whitebeard held his title for so many years, even though he was clearly not the strongest anymore..From my understanding, in the Ace novels it was stated that Kaido was already stronger than WB..
Now we have a conflict between WSM and WSC...We don't know when Kaido met Shanks, but we can suspect that he was impressed with Shanks in their bout before Marineford..Impressed him enough to put him in his top 5 , close to Roger,WB, Xebec.
Shanks in reality could be the true WSM, but in actuality we have the WSM in the shadows, Imu. The WSM title means nothing.
There's a shit show regarding the WSM title, so why not WSS?
I am of the idea that there's a difference between a sword fight and a sword duel..
In a sword fight you use everything you have at hand : haki, swords, guns, df's, explosives, technology, maybe combined with dirty tricks, kicks, etc.
A sword duel is just swords, haki, that's it.
In a sword duel should the WSS title be won or lost.
I don't like the idea of someone using a DF in a duel for the title.
If you use a zoan you might say it just improves your base stats, and that it should still be ok, but once you get to paramecia and logia it's a complete clown fiesta.
What if Zoro had Akainu's df in his duel with Mihawk? Yeah, they clash their swords while the ground catches on fire, a magma volcano errupts near the battlefield, magma meteorites fall out of the sky. That's not sword skill..and it shouldn't count..
Now, Mihawk is the best when fighting in a duel, but when it's outside it, who knows?
Would you like BM to take Mihawk's title because she uses a sword?BM: Ignore my df abilities dear Mihawk..Now i will take your title...while thunder, fire and everything under the sun besides the swordsmanship takes your life...What?
At the same time, i don't know how Mihawk is the true WSS..
If Zoro beats Mihawk before Laugh tale, that means there are a few more to challenge Zoro after Mihawk, so stronger than Mihawk...
Shiryuu would have to be one of them, but he has a df...
At the same time we can look at the bald Gandhi gorosei with the supreme grade sword..That one should be stronger than Mihawk too, to pose a threat to WSS Zoro.... and that one looks like a "pure" swordsman, but maybe he has something on top of his sword skill....
If Zoro beats Mihawk after Laugh tale, it would be humiliation on Zoros' part....
Luffy achieves PK, learns the true history. It would simply overshadow Zoro's dream..
That's why people cling to Mihawk so hard, because they think Mihawk will be Zoro's last fight in the series, which is clearly not the case...
They want Mihawk to be the strongest, otherwise Zoro's dream means nothing...
At the same time, it would be shallow if Mihawk was not the true strongest swordsman..but here we have that scapegoat..
If the swordsmen after Mihawk clearly have other things besides swordsmanship, haki, it's clearly not a duel, so Mihawks' reputation is not tarnished in the eyes of the fanbase.
Others might be above him due to other things outside of what you would consider a sword duel, as i stated above :"haki, swords, guns, df's, explosives, technology, maybe combined with dirty tricks, kicks, etc."
That's where i would put Shanks.
    Sorry for the long read..
Edit: Shanks is 1 cm taller than Mihawk, Zoro is 1 cm taller than Sanji, King is 1 cm taller than Queen..XD I love the hints.

Mihawk was likely given this title by Morgan. Mihawk never beat shanks so I don’t see how he can definitively be ranked ahead of him in terms of swordsmanship skill. With that being said it goes even deeper than that. There’s about 100 different arguments I could give you about how it can be argued that shanks is stronger than Mihawk, but the one singular argument you can give me that Mihawk is stronger is that he has the wss title. I think that really speaks for itself.

I have a question regarding your arguments for the portrayal of Mihawk during Marineford. To be clear I also believe Mihawk is stronger than Shanks, so I am not arguing rather just curious of your explanation. In two instances you mention the breath of all things when Mihawk can't cut someone (Jozu and Mr. 1), but what about when Mihawk cuts the iceberg. You say in the video that Mihawk was aiming at Luffy and ends up cutting the Iceberg effortlessly. What about the breath of all things in this moment, if Mihawk was going for Luffy, how come he cut the iceberg? I'm not sure how I would explain it. All in all though, great video. Keep up the good work!

    • @tsujan3984
      @tsujan3984 Год назад +2

Well, it's probably like this, cutting ice isn't considered that difficult. I mean the only thing that makes Mihawk cutting it impressive is the sheer size of it with nothing but a casual size of it from quite a distance. But Iron and Diamonds are way way harder especially Diamonds. That's why cutting up Mr1 needed a slight focus while curt the ice berg didn't.

    • @diaklea

@@tsujan3984 yes but the whole point is that with the breath of all things you wont cut that which you dont want to cut, no matter how easy it is for you to cut it. Like with Zoro and the leaves.

    • @tsujan3984
      @tsujan3984 Год назад

@@diaklea Hmmm, maybe it's because Mihawk wanted to cut Luffy but he didn't not want to cut Iceberg. In order to not cut something you probably have to think about not wanting to cut it for things that are relatively easy to cut at least. But Steel and Diamond are very strong materials so Mihawk's simple slash didn't cut them at first but he used "the breath of all things" to then cut Mr.1
      Does that make sense?
Zoro didn't want to cut the grass so he didn't but Zoro wanted to cut the rock so he cut it very easily while using the breath of all things. However it doesn't mean that if he swings his sharp sword on the grass he won't cut it.
Mihawk probably wasn't using breath of all things when he was sending a normal slash that was intercepted by Josu and Mr.1 but when Mr.1 needed to be cut Mihawk used the breath of all things and cut Mr.1 without any effort.

      @diaklea Год назад +1

@@tsujan3984 yeah I see what you mean. It makes sense in that way. If you dont want to cut something otherwise very easy for you to cut, you really have to think about it as it takes more skill than simply not cutting iron or diamond.

      @WWEFans223 Год назад +2

I would explain it like this: Given that The breath of all things is a ‘breath’/‘voice’, it works like how sound works in the real world ie each breath have thresholds and frequencies. Some sounds are different but of the same threshold/frequency ie a concert can be as loud as a construction drill. This principle being true explains not only why Mihawk cut the iceberg whilst aiming for Luffy but also a lot of AoE phenomena in the story for example When Mr 1 cuts Zoro with the buzzsaws, he slices his chest open but cuts completely through the pillar Zoro was sitting behind. Am I saying Mr 1 was using the BoATs? No, but it explains why he can casually cut through pillars but can’t slice through Zoro; Zoro’s flesh is of a higher frequency. Whenever someone cuts through something, they are either knowingly or unknowingly cutting through the substance with the required amount of force/haki/precision required. Likewise, when Mihawk tries to cut Luffy, since he is a BoATs user, he used the required amount of force/haki/precision needed to not only cut through Luffy but other substances that are either of the same frequency or lower frequency than rubber, like the ice, which is why it was cut.
This also explains why Jozu was able to stop his attack aimed for WB.

I didn't even start the video yet, but I will say Mihawk top 1 lmao.
I genuinely think not having Mihawk at least top 5 and having Shanks above Mihawk are delusional takes.
Shanks above Mihawk is just simply lying to yourself and Mihawk not even being top 5 is just like saying "Zoros goal is to be below Luffy and Luffys 4 last major opponents."
So to me, there is no debate here, but knowing you, I'm sure this is a comprehensive video explaining all of this in a more informative way than I did here for those people that just can't let go of Shanks being stronger, because they mistake character writing with strenght. They always want their favorites to be stronger. But they don't realize if Mihawk is stronger, NOTHING changes about Shanks, Shanks character remains in tact as we know and love him. BUT if Mihawk is weaker, then Mihawks character becomes a clown, a fake dream Zoro is chasing, a fraud that doesn't deserve his title and an entire world that has been fooled, agreeing to call him the strongest swordsman when he is not. You see the problem here people?
Mihawk > Shanks keeps the plot going fine.
Shanks > Mihawk invalidates the dream of Luffys right hand and makes the entire world out to be stupid.
PS: Shoutout to Roy Newgates video on this topic. Still one of, if not the most goated video on this topic on RUclips imo. Roy nailed it.
Not to discredit this video though, as new information and arguments appeared ever since Roys video anyways, so an update from one of the goats in this community is very welcome.
I had a whole section here on the comment on how I believe King to be a swordsman as I would say he is always slightly weaker without a sword than he would be with one. But your arguments have changed my perspective to the sword being just a supplement to Kings style. In the same way an MMA fighter is not a dedicated kickboxer, but uses kickboxing, King is not a dedicated swordsman, but uses a sword. So I deleted that whole paragraph cause you already changed my mind on this lmao.
By the way, call me completely crazy for this, I probably deserve it. But the fact that Mihawk is confident in telling Zoro he will await him at the top NO MATTER HOW LONG ZORO TAKES and now Mihawk made an enemy of all of the marines once more tells me that Mihawk is an individual potentially capable, or at least believing he is capable of, beating a Yonko crew/Marines tier force all by himself. At the very least, Mihawk believes that even if a Yonko came after him with all of his might and allies, he would prevail and come out healthy enough to still be above Shanks, the (most likely) second strongest swordsman in the world. That's the kind of person I take Mihawk for. Specifically because Mihawk acknowledged making allies as the strongest power in the seas. Because that means he knows he lacks that strongest thing you can have but he STILL believes he will not be killed and his title won't be taken.
I feel bad for people that already liked my comment and now seem like they automatically agree to me basically saying Mihawk > an entire Yonko crew/3 admirals xDDDDD
But here's the thing, I will NEVER be convinced that Zoros dream will be made to be stupid by Oda. Zoro is the second most important character in the series after Luffy. So Mihawk cannot be a fraud because that would destroy about 24 years of readers awaiting Zoros dream to culminate in their final duel. If Mihawk believes noone can take him down, then I believe Mihawk. If Mihawk can casually walk into a Yonkos inner circle, insult the Yonko as a one armed has been in front of his crew and not be corrected or even scoffed at by a single person present, then I will assume that Mihawk full well knows that he is correct and that he is NOT threatened in the current situation, because the combined might present there does not make him feel threatened.
Obviously him and Shanks are friends as well so he knows they wouldn't just attack him, but there's still also the fact that Shanks nameless subordinates were scared shitless and went to Shanks to warn him as if the entire Marines just pulled up to take down their crew. In the eyes of Shanks own crewmates, Mihawk is a threat to them even when all of Shanks commanders and Shanks himself are gathered in one place. So Shanks own crew believes that Mihawk may possibly take down Shanks, Benn and all the other big names at once while fighting alone.
Call me crazy, but at the very least, that is how the fodder in Shanks crew views Mihawk.
About Marineford stuff, people vastly misunderstand what Mihawk was even doing in Marineford. He didn't even really try to go for Whitebeard. Sure, his cut was intended for him, but if Mihawk had the goal to actually cut Whitebeard, then he wouldn't have just given up after a single nameless, one handed, effortless attack now would he? Mihawk said he was going to measure "the true distance between us and that man, who seems to be standing right in front of us". What is this true distance? In my opinion, he is refering to the "effort" you have to make to get to Whitebeard.
He basically said "WB is literally right in front of us, anyone with ranged attacks can easily reach him, but will it REALLY be that easy?" THAT is the concept he wanted to test in that moment. He wanted to check if it was really as easy to get to WB as the distance would suggest. And Jozu gave him his answer. No. The "true distance" to get to WB was that you need to get through his commanders defending him first. Thus, the actual "effort" associated with bridging that gap is far more than just moving the couple hundred meters WB was standing away from the wall Mihawk was standing on.
Later on when testing Luffy, Mihawk literally asked fate what it will do with Luffy. If the worlds strongest swordsman wanted to kill Luffy with all he has, the same man that confidently insults Yonko and declared to Zoro that he will remain at the top no matter how long it takes, a man with THAT HUGE CONFIDENCE, wether you agree with Mihawks confidence or not, would such a confident man really doubt himself and ask fate what it has in store for Luffy? No. Such a confident man would be 100% certain that Luffy is going to die right here, right now.
But he was not certain, because he was not going for the kill. That's the only logical explanation.
And for Vista, Mihawk was done with his test, as was 100% shown by Mihawks inner monologue about Luffy, Mihawk had his answer about Luffys strenght and fate, so he used Vista to kill some time. That's all there is to it. Vista was the most competent swordsman present, so Mihawk enjoyed himself a bit instead of just crushing random fodders in the war.
As you explained perfectly as well, the Mr. 1 situation is perfect, as it proves the point about Jozu blocking the attack not meaning anything lmao.
I will give WB some credit btw and mention that Luffy was not just afraid of Mihawk but ALSO when he saw WB tilting the oceans. One can argue he was in awe, not scared. But to me it was both. Luffy felt that he was vastly outclassed in that moment. But when it comes to a personal threat, yes, Mihawk was the ONLY obstacle that made Luffy retreat on his own. Even for the three admirals, Luffy stormed in head first because every notion of cautiousness was thrown out the window, with Aces life on the line. And yet Mihawk was able to instill a fear in Luffy that made him stay back, when his brother was on the line.
And yeah, Mihawk is 100% afraid of Shanks, that's why he went into his base and called him a weak bitch infront of all of his commanders and crew, surely makes sense that he would be terrified of Shanks' wrath :^)
Lastly, the subtitles have some minor typos here and there, which isn't a big deal at all, but one made me laugh.
    33:34
"In what world is Mihawk afraid of SHARKS?" xDD

Anyways, yeah, I understand I'm most likely being crazy with the later part. But at the very least I believe that Mihawk is confident enough to walk in on an entire Yonko crew and somehow still get out of there safely.
It may even be a Katakuri type deal, because Mihawks definining feature, his eyes, and his original epithet "clairvoyant" which describes someone that is able to perceive events everywhere and even in the future, heavily hints that Mihawks observation haki is out of this world.
So he may just be confident to get out of any sticky situation with ease, or he may be able to know minutes in advance if someone tries to attack him, so he KNOWS he can walk into here and he won't be attacked, since he's seeing pretty far into the future?
That's a possibility that doesn't mean Mihawk can 3v1 the admirals lmao, so this is probably more reasonable right? xD
Also, remember how Mihawk knew that something about the warlords was being discussed in the Reverie BEFORE the newspaper about that dropped? Before the Kings even made the decision yet, it was just being discussed. I see a lot of people telling me he just read it in the newspaper, but we canonically know that's not true. He was reading about Moria in the News and the Reverie stuff wasn't published until the warlords were already being attacked.
Anways, my take on this is two options.
1: Mihawk has an informant in the WG.
2: Mihawks observation is so stupid, he listened in on the Reverie from his home.
Like how Shanks directed his advanced conquerers to hit Greenbull all the way up on Wano, Mihawk may be able to direct his observation in one specific direction only, losing the 360 degree observation but gaining a lot of range.
This is obviously just speculation tho

I’ve always interpreted the exchange of Mihawk calling Shanks a “Washed up Hazbeen” is a parallel to Shanks in the bar at the beginning of the story, showing that he WASNT all talk, that his philosophy doesn’t only apply to those weaker then him, but those who have the edge over him as well.
That is to say; I believe that Mihawk IS stronger, but that Shanks has MUCH more desire to BE STRONG, which as we know is a BIG part of Haki Blooming/Haki Growth.
Mihawk is never going to grow any stronger then he already has, while Zoro, Luffy and Shanks, will continue to grow, and will surpass him… eventually.
My point is; Mihawk climbed to the top, and is just kinda sitting there, with no reason to try anymore. While all of our protagonists, Shanks included, have reason to grow; they travel, they fight, they overcome. Mihawk doesn’t SEEK more then he has, and so he will eventually be overshadowed by others.
But, for right now..? Mihawk is 99% more likely to be the strongest at this moment.

Shanks is a swordsman, but he's not only a swordsman. As we saw recently, there is some crazy shit you can do with adv conqueror's haki. Shanks scared Green Bull with a haki beam from outside of the island. It is possible and likely that Shanks developed conqueror's haki skills that have nothing to do with swordsmanship. His default is to use a sword, but we've never seen Shanks fight seriously. We've actually never seen him fight at all. He one-shotted Captain Useless Mid with his sword attack, but that's about it. You are right that Shanks being a stronger swordsman would invalidate Zoro's goal. But he's not a stronger swordsman. As a swordsman, Shanks is no match for Mihawk since losing his arm. But as a fighter he is most likely stronger than Mihawk, simply based on the fact that Shanks is Luffy's mentor/rival, and Mihawk is Zoro's mentor/rival. Luffy always has the stronger opponent, and Luffy's promise to Shanks kickstarted the entire story. It would be extremely underwhelming if Shanks turned out weaker than Zoro's opponent.

@Vorce Demonize When Shanks' mere presence scared away Greenbull, that wasn't the feat of a simple swordsman. By the logic of Mihawk's title making him stronger than Shanks, you could also claim WB was in fact stronger than every other man in the world while sick and dying, despite literally no one actually believing that. His title is the exact same in Japanese as Mihawk's except, instead of 'swordsman', it's just 'man'. Meanwhile, every Mihawk fanboy for some reason thinks Mihawk was stronger than WB, despite his title. It makes no sense to put more weight on the absoluteness of one than another. The fact is, Shanks has the whole world jacking him off and it's no surprise the majority thinks he's stronger than Mihawk.
Shanks has always been Luffy's goal of surpassing, while Mihawk has been Zoro's. If Zoro viewed Shanks as a simple swordsman, he would want to defeat him too, just like he wants to fight every other swordsman he runs into. Shanks is a swordsman, but he's also an adept fighter without a sword (in a way Mihawk isn't, as demonstrated by the Greenbull feat). There's simply no world that the ultimate goal of power Luffy wants to reach is lesser than the goal of power Zoro wants to reach. Shanks is just that guy. A normal swordsman doesn't lose their sword arm and then go on to become a Yonko and casually stop wars. The BIGGEST indicator from Oda that Shanks is that guy is that we've never seen him seriously fight anyone, despite us seeing literally every other known top tier in the verse fight. He's not hiding Shanks' power to have him be weaker than Mihawk - someone who, by Mihawk stan's own reasoning, should be weaker than old WB.

And his true goal is to become pirate king which has nothing to do with shanks. In whole manga, there is not a single panel with zoro and shanks name together. When garp was talking with strawhats zoro was lost. During law and luffy conversation zoro was not there. Greenbull obeyed the orders and every smart human will do that. Two yonko and their crew were there why won't he run away. And shanks didn't do any damage to him. Shanks has a scar and got a hand eaten by sea king. Mihawk is not even touched in entire series. And buggy became a yonko in 2 years after entering grand line. we have never seen mihawk fighting seriously moreover, he has never seen bleeding or shocked in the entire series except in his fight against zoro. plot armor doesnt exist. its a made up thing. people win fights in manga because the author said so. thats the whole goddamn point. the author is trying to tell a planned out story, not run a simulation, especially that everything that conveniently saves or helps characters in One Piece is pretty much never a Deus Ex Machina. It's always a firing of chekhov's gun. The seeds for that situation were always planted potentially even chapters ahead of time, even volumes.
When Merry came to Enies Lobby to save the Straw Hats, that wasn't just "plot armor", it was already well established by Oda all the way back in Skypiea that she is sentient. He had loaded the gun then and fired it in Enies Lobby as a believable, convenient, but believable solution to the situation our heroes found themselves in, and that's just one example.
