Such an interesting interview, especially Sondra talking about size of performance for the Met screen versions. She is so animated and precise, and also has a fine speaking voice. Well done, David. I didn't know about her training in the flute and drama... or in finance - & being a mortgage broker! Anne Tait, Toronto
+tristanhnl I'm fairly certain Norma is in the fall next season (Co-Pro with San Fran). The new Forza by Bieito currently at ENO is also a COC co-pro with the MET, and she is singing Leonora there, so maybe later down the road she can bring that as well! The Toronto Star article mentions an "annual commitment" to the COC!
Really? I thought it was Norma because Sondra hinted it's a production she's been in several times already, and I don't think she's ever done Forza in her career yet. Oh well, we'll see!
+tristanhnl Oh it is Norma for sure. Forza is scheduled at the MET in 17/18. She is starring with Antonenko and Hvorostovsky and will probably make its way to the COC afterwards. Would be nice if she sang it here too.
They're definitely singing a lot of the same repertory, but Sutherland's voice was TOTALLY different. I've heard other interviews where Sondra has mentioned Callas because she thinks their voices function in a similar way and I think that she was speaking in a mechanical way. She also admires her dramatically. All in, I think the move toward a greater integration between the dramatic and musical aspects of the form naturally leads you closer to a Callas and further from a Sutherland. Dame Joan was an utterly fantastic singer, but she wasn't a great actress and if your goal is to do both, you'll naturally draw inspiration from and seek comparison to someone who did both very well.
Beautiful Sondra, you are always gorgeous and I dream with you. I love you Sondra, I love you too much.

At 16:03, if I'm not mistaken, Sondra is referring to....NORMA! =D Wooohoooo!

Why don't any of these new sopranos -- Sondra, Meade, etc. -- ever mention Sutherland when making comparisons to their predecessors?
