I drove across the county from NM to NH in 1977 with my two young children, listening to John Denver and others all the way. Made a slight detour (3 miles, iirc) in Kansas to let my kids play on a playground in Colby and to give me a chance to drink in all the beauty of Kansas that Denver made me love every time I hear this song. One of my all-time faves. Hard to listen to it and not get a tear in the eye. John's soaring melody is soooo evocative.
Went to a farmers market last year. Walking stall to stall this song caught me ear , it was a local with the most emotional appealing voice singing this beautiful song.
We could sure use his gentle genius these days. I hope I meet him in Heaven so I can tell him in person how much his music meant to me, how it got me through.
I saw him in concert four times. The first time in Madison Square Garden in 1978. Twice at the Meadowlands, one of those times with my future wife. The last time was at the Oakdale Theater in Wallingford, CT in 1991. A great entertainer and a poet.
"Back Home Again" always takes me back to grade 9, when it was a radio hit. Our farm was sold in 2017 ( after over a century in the family ), my Mom is gone, my Dad's in a nursing home ), but, as John's friends, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band sang, " still I go home again, in my heart."
I hate that family farms are lost. I am informed that 80 homes sit on the farm I was tailed on. I could not bear driving by to see it. Truthfully I would have preferred to never know. My parents are now very elderly, and seeking to sell the last holding, it is sensible, but it breaks my heart. 💕
I love so many of his songs, but this one above all. John reminds us of what the Beatles taught us: simple is beautiful; authenticity always resonates; a good story unifies us. You might have been born Puerto Rican in Brooklyn, but I bet you loved your uncle like John loved Matthew…..we’re all brothers that way. Like Freddy Mercury, Jim Croce, John Lennon, et al: Denver died far too soon. How many songs will we never know of those who left us too young? What will we never know?
I grew up on a very large dairy farm in up-state New York. The farm is long gone now. I miss the wholesomeness there. Hard work, but makes a person either great or bitter. It made me better. I didn't know John did this for Farm Aide , nice !!
As a Coloradoan "Rocky Mountain High" will be my favorite song". However, even a munchkin, this song, had an emotional impact upon me. Vocally and musically (his guitar picking) I recognized as powerful.
I was lucky enough to see John in the March he passed in the October what a performance he gave I play his music every day for my elderly house bound mother with dementia 🏴❤️
He was wonderful. I met him in Rochester, NY when he was first starting. We were having an Environmental Education Fair and he volunteered to speak! WOW! What a weekend! He was the nicest guy I've ever met!
I saw him perform once, live, on a cold February night in Detroit at the Fox theatre. The atmosphere inside was warm. Denvers' fans sang along to his songs and he gave a great concert. That was 1994. Who could have believed that night that we would only be with us for three more years.
wonderful artist, I have fond memories of listening to an 8 track tape of his greatest hits, as a child, while sittin on ''grandma's feather bed'. Rest In Peace John, i'll forever remember the beautiful chorus of this song.
John~ Please teach the others where you're at the music and ask the Great Designer to send them here.... We need them! What is below is above and what is above is below!
This is one of his best I think it's written about Dean Dusseldorf his uncle not sure if I've got the sp right & he shouldve played God in oh God but I guess he played Jesus disciple cuz George burns
Anyone know the story of the tornado in 47? Can’t find anything online about it, except for a the tornadoarchive which has an F3 going through Colby that year.
Based off of that uncle, not about. That uncle actually died in a car crash on his 21st birthday. Don't know if drinking was cause or if it was just freak timing.
The Mysterious Cynthia X uncle in english could be brother of his mother or his father. So if Mathew was the brother of the mother then what John wrote is meaningful
John Denver was the man!! So talented and I miss him, badly.
If his song makes you weep.. give me a thumbs up..
Takes an incredible voice to sing this well.
Who gets teary eyed listening to this? Just a little story with enough depth to make a good movie

John’s music has got me through some truly difficult times in my life!
John’s guitar playing was always seriously underrated.
His guitar playing was exquisite! And to be able to sing & play like that at the same time is just incredible to me. 👏⭐🎶🎸⛵✈💖

Amazing...fantastic song, awesome picking...it's just John voice and his guitar but his power fills up the stage. This is a CLASSIC!!
A great example of a simple progression (2/5/1) made to sound incredible.

They plowed up our farm after the house burned down and turned it into a corn field! Makes my cry to drive by!
My Dad used to play this for me when I was a boy. He always said it was my song…
Singer, Song Writer, Poet, Musician. The Ultimate!!!!!

I am the Matthew this song was written about...God Bless Brother John...
That guitar playing rivals any other guitarist, yet is so simple sounding, amazing.

It breaks my heart that I'll never get to see him perform live. His music is amazing.

I love this song and John’s vocal, especially his guitar technique!
A beautiful song.

Does any one know what brand of guitar he is playing?
MY FAMY was. Me. TOO! Mike was lyeing under the riveroom table?
Now if Matthew was the second youngest of john's Dad's BROTHERS< then he wasn't his father's ONLY BOY ...sorry for being too analytical here....
Based off of that uncle, not about. That uncle actually died in a car crash on his 21st birthday. Don't know if drinking was cause or if it was just freak timing.
poetic license.
Matthew could have been his Mother's brother.

excellent'! thanks for the laugh! love john denver he was pure joy rip and your paradox fulls me with joy :-)
@@francineducrot3669 yes i think it's weird 😂
Maybe different dads
It’s simply a line in the poem, I believe. He might have written this poem inspired by his father’s brother, but it may not be entirely true.
In reality his name wasn’t Matthew and he died in a car accident , he refers to him in Rocky Mountain High when he says “lost a friend “
Private. 1956 ..2018...matthew..just substitute frank for Matthew...and you have it...raymy
