    Just a heads up for shrink plastic, you can use a heat gun on it. I've done shrink plastic and uv resin on top. It does work after the shrink plastic is fully shrunk down.

  • @candiwalkowski7480

    Shrink plastic buckles as it shrinks - baking for longer would have fixed it. Also, sanding in a circular motion would have made a more uniform and consistent surface for the resin to adhere.
    Also, I think you would have had a better result with the apple if you had done it as small as she did. You didn’t adjust the bake time to the size of the apple you did, and I think the under baking and size worked against you.

      @aprilmcpherson-vanraalte5590 3 года назад +8

      Very insightful I didn't think of that (with the apple) well, I also didn't know to cook a little longer to get desired results on the shrink... Thanks 👍

    Helpful tip!! If you ever try shrink plastic again in the future, I recommend measuring out a small piece and marking it like a ruler with a Sharpie. I did a piece that was 15cm long (before shrinking) and I marked it in 1/2cm increments and then I shrank it down in the oven. Now you have a way to plan how much to use of the shrink plastic for the project by measuring out the piece and comparing it to the ruler that's been shrunk! It's really helpful! Hopefully that makes sense! >____<
    Also I recommend using the Shrinky Dinks Rough and Ready shrink plastic. It does take longer than 10 seconds to shrink, but the quality is a lot nicer! Also shrink plastic is fragile, so be very careful when cutting it!
    In the Tukulot video, immediately after they take the shrink plastic out of the oven, they smashed it down to make it flat, you can use a glass plate or something in your kitchen! Large pieces of shrink plastic tends to warp and stick to itself when baking (which I think might have been your problem), so usually you need to watch it and use chopsticks or something to separate it from itself before it should eventually flatten out. If it's not flattened when you remove it from the oven, you need to flatten it with a plate or something!
    I hope this helps!!

      Rubsy Moon yeah when you watch Moriah Elizabeth’s most recent video on shrink plastic, she says when they curl up, don’t take it out yet.

  • @OneWeekRainisu
    @OneWeekRainisu 5 лет назад +116

    Jackie, they do curl up, after curling they should flatten, what I do is that a pan and flatten them after taking them out. Also they have to be on a flat pan not in one that has any edge. So flip the pan upside down.
    I find that if you flatten them with something immediately after getting them out they will fully flatten. I should say it took me several tries till I did it right. But they need to curl, then wait for them to curl out. It’s pretty different tbh and I don’t blame you for not getting it right. XD

    Hi to help you with the butterfly wings the oven time is not realistic a lot of the time you have to watch the shrink in till it flattens and with the other part just add tape around it so the resin stays on or start in the middle and do small drops like on a Penney with water
    You got this don’t give up so fast love your art and learn from your failure because that’s how true art is born

    • @moontoxity
      @moontoxity 5 лет назад +17

      I just did a rather large piece just a few minutes ago with printable shrink plastic. Yes it curled, but generally you do not need to take it out. It'll flatten out when it shrinks more. :) The only time you would need to take it out is if it folded on itself cause then it sticks to itself and at that point it's just best to start over and try again.

    Ooohhhh. The shrink plastic one. Ouch. But the instacraft looks so good and looks pretty simple if you have a few tips.
    If you have a toaster oven you could bake it in that too. But even if in an oven, you should preheat and then put in your plastic when it's warm enough. I find that when I put it straight in while it's heating it doesn't look as good in the end. You could also save even more paper by just placing the picture underneath and trace on top (it also lets you keep the paper in tact for future projects!) And my last tip to share for the cutting, which I had to learn the hard way. I really tried to save lots of my plastic but you really can't help it sometimes, you have to swivel your pieces. You really, really, really, can't cut pieces in one go. As I'm looking at the wing and trying to envision how I'd cut it, I would have probably taken 10-13 cuts to get the piece.
    I really hope you try it again and realize how much fun and possibilities there are in shrink plastic!

    Jackie, I know I'm a year late but I wanted to say you are awesome and I love how you dive in to new mediums whole heartedly even if you're scared!
    Two itty bitty points: Shrinky Dinks will flatten with more cooking time and if they don't, put some heavy books on them when they are still hot.
    The second is: using the pointy thing to hold your apple like the Instagram person did so there isn't mess on your fingers or smudging might have worked better.
    DON'T EVER GIVE UP, TRY, TRY AGAIN!

    Something I haven't seen others mentioned in regards to the wing, the shrink plastic specifically reacts to heat, so putting the uv resin on top of the unshrunken plastic and then applying heat (uv resin heats up like crazy), of course it's going to warp. Once it's shrunk down, the heat won't affect it anymore , at least not in short bursts from the curing time since it's become much thicker. I've done this kind of stuff with success.

    Worked with Shrinky Dink Ruff and Ready shrink plastic the other day. It already has a frosted texture and it shrinks to a third of the size you cut out. It works really well, I did a 2.25 in squared template design and it shrunk to 3/4 of an inch. And it has a thick edge. 10/10 would recommend

    • @laurenpinekenstein4481
      @laurenpinekenstein4481 5 лет назад

      And my first and only time with it, no holes were poked. And it works with most coloring materials and paints, I believe, except watercolor and crayons.

    Tips about shrink plastic:
    •Preheat the oven properly
    •don't try to shrink too large pieces because the shrinking process involves twisting and curving, and the bigger your initial piece is the more likely it will try twist on itself
    •usually the shrinking takes 2-3 minutes or so, but the warping is not your only sign. When it finishes warping, you can also see that the smaller piece of plastic is also thicker than the original sheet.
    •don't give up on shrinking plastic, I think you should try to read up on it and try again because it's really one of those things you could enjoy.

    jackiiiiieeeee don’t use dollar store shrink plasticccc!!!! if you buy regular shrink plastic [or the Shrinky Dink brand] once you heat it and it shrinks it won’t re-warp again with the heat of the resin.
    i’d love for you to try that craft again bc i think the resin part could be really cool looking!!

    Jackie if you wanna use shrink plastic again, I would suggest that while it is still hot, you take a plastic spatula and flatten them to help them not curl up. Also if you want to make something simulier to the butterfly earrings, I would suggest cutting out the butterfly wings and then coloring them with colored pencil in the design that you want. Follow the instructions on your packaging maybe wait a little longer just to make sure that they are nice and flat. Then after that, you can actually mod Podge the colored pencil to make sure that it doesn't come off so easily, you can dab on the mod Podge do a couple of coats, and then you can actually use mod Podge dimensional magic to give a resin effect.
