Having a variety of brushes on hand, paired with the knowledge of how to use them, really does increase your ability to expand your painting technique. Admittedly, my go to brush is still the round, but I do use a variety of brushes in each painting I create.

My favorite variant on the round brush is the quill. It delivers so much water and has such a fine point (especially real squirrel ones). It delivers the water and pigment in a unique way through the point. The best synthetic quills IMO are the Tintoretto ones available from Jackson's or from A. Gallo; or the Neptune ones although they aren't nearly as pointy.

    Emma,
Great demo video for your new brushes.🖌️🎨 I am happy to see you are branching out with your brush styles. I have Kristy Rice's set and one tip I do while painting roses with the dagger brush is, I twist the brush between my thumb and index finger while making the "c" stroke petals. It gives the flower a more organic look. You can actually do this technique with any style brush. I experiment different techniques with all my brushes. Sometimes I get lucky and sometimes it looks like I am having a stroke.😀 That's why I use the cheaper paper for experiments.

I just got 4 new brushes in the mail so this is perfect. I want your set but I wanted to feel like I completed my neptune set. The water it held was SO intimidating at first that I didn't use it but I have fallen in love with that. Hoping my husband gets the hint and orders these. I find your channel to be the best teaching channel for me!

Great explanation of brush shapes, it reminds me to get out some of my unused brushes and experiment. I would love to see a breakdown of your color palette. What colors you have on there and why, how you chose them and how they interact with the other colors. Thank you for what you do, you are the best teacher I’ve found and I’ve seen a lot!

#emmajane My Granddaughter and I just set up my very humble art table. Haven't done any serious art in decades - mostly were acrylic, but at age 65 I am willing to adventure and explore. A stroke might have left me with a bit of shaking hands but I am feeling courageous. Limitations are physical and economical, yet I have Faith that my Loving Lord and Redeemer will help me with your guidance. Blessings for you and your loved ones! ♥️💐

Thanks for going through all of them. I'm new/back to learning watercolor. So, this helps me know more about what each brush can do. Also, having a different brush in each box gives me time to play with and practice with until the next box.
I went to pre-order right away! I'm excited to get started and know that Emma's expertise is going to make this fabulous. On the sign up page, I saw a photo of the boxes the goodies will come in. I won't be able to throw those away because they are soooo beautiful!!!

If it weren't for you I wouldn't know Jack about watercolor. I found the dagger brush about a year into my watercolor journey and it was a game changer for my leaves (which I completely sucked at.) I would love to show you how I use the dagger in making two and three color leaves and how they look different depending on what angle/direction you hold it. If you hold your hand upside down, it makes a completely different leaf than when you hold it in the traditional way. Let me know if you would like to see, aaaaand then tell me how to do that because I am (self-admittedly) low-techy tech when it comes to social media and video upload. 🤦🏼‍♀️ And thank you so much for your dedication and your endless patience in showing all of us how to do this our own way and reassuring us that there's really no wrong way when it comes to art. I know I speak for everybody when I say we just love you ❤️

Great video Emma! I was really pleasantly surprised when I tried the angle brush to make leaves. You can make some really interesting marks like you can with the dagger brush.

I use the angle with just a little color on one end and clear on the rest. It makes a lovely gradient on petals or leaves.

From the moment you put your brush down to the moment you lift your brush, that's a stroke. Go backwards, look at certain images, (ex. winter snowy trees, roses) and you will see what shapes you need to make. Those shapes are your strokes, select the brush accordingly. The brushes that are the same but differ in size are for larger scale paintings, but do the same marks (strokes). It's always good to look at what others are doing, try to find out if great masters had any preferences etc. I was just about to do a search on brush types to see if anyone found something special about it, something that's not obvious but very helpful. There's some people that can paint most and sometimes everything with certain brush types, it just works for them.

Great video, though I'm quite surprised to hear you say you couldn't find a dagger brush? I've seen them from almost every manufacturer these days. I also really love the cat's tongue/pointed oval shape in both soft and firm brushes. And my new fave is a squirrel triangle brush I got from Rosemary & Co!

Hey hey, I'm so excited about the sub boxes! I can't wait for them to come in!! I love my round brushes but after a good year or so use I'm in need of new set so yay for getting yours! When I was into acrylic painting I used the flat brush and dipped one side in one color and the other side in another color ie pink and orange or orange and yellow to make flowers have a two tone look. I've been wanting to try it with watercolor but haven't had the right brush for it. I bet it would look super awesome if it could work. It would have to be a little on the thicker side of watercolor. I'm looking forward to you pushing me out there and learning new watercolor techniques with your sub boxes! So glad I found you on RUclips in 2020. I have learned so much! I posted a few pictures on my IG of my some of my practice pages and have seen some good progress. I'm still finding my own style and having fun just playing along the way. Thanks so much for all the hard work you do behind the scenes! I know its a lot of work and you can feel overworked at times and even though you don't get thanked enough for it it doesn't go unnoticed or unappreciated!! Love your videos!!! I wish RUclips was around when I was a kid...I would probably be a professional artist...I just didn't have the exposure as a kids so I went a different route. But I'm coming to it now. Thanks again!

I love your Monday video. It get me in the grove of exploring with my painting for the weeks. I am really interested in the subscription boxes but debate if I go for 6 months or 12 months. Do you know which brushes we are getting every month? It would make my decision about the subscription easier if I knew which brush we were getting.

Hi, Emma. I love your tutorials, both for your art and your sweet and honest approach to everything! Maybe you can help me with a question: I'm in Spain. If your boxes are shipped from the UK it will be a nightmare for EU (tons of paperwork for customs clearance with each delivery plus nearly 50-60% extra charge in taxes on top of the value already paid for the material and shipping. Is there any possibility Craftamo shipped the boxes from somewhere else, not the UK? Even from US, Canada or wherever, even if shipping costs are more expensive, it will save us a lot of time, money and headaches with customs clearances. I have already asked Craftamo but they didn't answer yet.
