I binge watched the show yesterday... And I can say the first season is an absolute solid masterpiece. Starting from the production all the way to the small little mechanical voices of the Juggernaut the details they showed was brilliant. Not to mention the voice acting was immeculate!! + The music that gives you the feels!!
Truly 86 is in my top 10 fav animes ever.

Imagine if the author had gone the bad ending way with them actually dying here lol. One day we would have Lena VS Shin and she would have to free him by killing him.

I kind of expect that but I'm glad they did not make that kind of route. Some tragic anime really need a happy ending.

This was actually the ending the author wanted it to be, everyone dead except for Lena. But the company she writes under wanted her to write more. Hence we got the happy reunion with the characters.
It's also the reason why the tone of the story changed during the 2nd cour, because the author originally wrote the story while taking a heavy inspiration from Remarque's "All Quiet on Western Front". That being said, anti-war.
1st Cour was full on with anti-war premise, didn't focus much on action but rather the consequences and the toll of each battles to the characters.
Starting 2nd cour, we have drama.
If I remember correctly, volume 1 of the Light Novels have 2 different epilogues. First one was for the original ending where everyone's dead (author's intended ending). Second one was a revision to set up for a sequel.

funny, the 1st time i watched Shin and Rei ' s scene my head was screaming that it was weird how Shin was on "Muted" and only his brother had sound. As if they belonged to 2 different places.
