  • Are you struggling with organic chemistry? Download my free ebook "10 Secrets To Acing Organic Chemistry" here: leah4sci.com/orgo-ebook/
    This leah4sci.com/organicchemistry/ tutorial teaches you how to draw organic molecules using line structure or skeletal structures, how to read/understand and count the atoms in this new structure, and how to convert back from a skeletal structure to a Lewis Structure or Condensed Molecule Structure
    Many students struggle with organic chemistry because they try to memorize rather than understand the concepts and mechanisms. My goal is to break down the concepts so that you can understand and apply them to your homework, quizzes and exams
    If you enjoyed this video please show your appreciation by giving me a thumbs up, and subscribe to my channel for quick access to all new tutorial uploads
    I will be creating quizzes to help you study the concepts in this quiz. These will be available on my website shortly

    Hey Leah, I have a quick simple question on the diagram of Butanoic Acid.
    On the 3rd carbon, which is a CH3, in the line drawing I'm only seeing 2 Hydrogens and not three on that carbon. Where have I gone wrong?
    I'm seeing a carbon met with only two bonds, so I have the thought process that would mean there would be 2 hydrogens instead of 3. Where am I going wrong?

    Hey Leah, are you sure butanoic acid is CH3CH(CH3)CH3*CO2H? The CH3 group before the CO2H would have five bonds here, 3 with H and 2 with the other C atoms. Based off what you're saying it should be CH3CH(CH3)CH2*CO2H... or is there an exception?

    • @Leah4sci

    I don't know much about chemistry or how to even word this question properly but I always wondered how you number each position and if it's a different structure why numbering changes direction. Like your cyclohexane example, why does the "1" go at the top left. I don't even expect a reply cuz I understand if there's a nitrogen in it or certain functional groups that might change direction I don't know enough I acknowledge some of it but I don't expect the detailed response. Maybe a taste would help?

    Your videos are so helpful! Thank you so much! I had a question about the last example, Glutamic Acid. According to the structure of the video, the condensed formula would be C5H8NO4. I wanted to double-check my answer so I searched on google and it says that the formula for Glutamic Acid is C5H9NO4. So 9 Hydrogens instead of the 8 that I count according to the skeletal/Lewis structure in the video. Could you please help me clarify this? Thank you in advance!!

    • @Leah4sci
      @Leah4sci  2 года назад +1

      Yes, of course. This is a great question! The overall charge of glutamic acid will change based on the pH of the solution it is in. This particular amino acid has three ionizable groups - the carboxy group, the amino group, and the side chain. By comparing the pH of the solution to the pKa of those individual groups, we can determine whether each will be protonated or deprotonated and also what the overall charge of the molecule will be. For more on this, you can read my tutorial at leah4sci.com/amino-acid-charge-in-zwitterions-and-isoelectric-point-mcat-tutorial/
