"Not bad" is the highest possible compliment in Germany.
In Swabian we don't say "Not bad". We say "Ed gschompfa isch globt gnuag!".
@@sagichdirdochnicht4653 and nobody else will understand you, greetings from hamburg

James: I'm not one of those people that can open a bottle with anything, I need a bottle opener.
Also James: *opens bottle with a spoon*
Aside from a bottle opener or the edge of a table (with mixed results), a spoon is the only thing I can use to open bottles. As an Australian this brings much shame to my family who will happily use lighters, teeth, phones, other bottles, etc.
Even with the spoon, I have to hide the pain in my face as I crush my finger.
I'm quite late for this, but here are some facts about fritz-kola because I'm German and they're one of the best things that has happened to our beverages industry in a while! In 2002 two students were just looking for any idea to become their own bosses and came up with the concept of a more "adult" cola - less sugar, more caffeine! The goal was to create a contrast to what's arguably the best known product in the world - you know the one - and have a more independent and local image. They're based in Hamburg and when they had to come up with the logo for the first batch they decided to just put both of their faces on the bottle caps, simply because it's a foolproof way to avoid any copyright difficulties. Other than Cola they also offer more naturally flavored fruit drinks like lemon, orange, melon or rhubarb but they also have their version of a Mate soft drink (based on the Yerba Mate tea that is widely spread in South America and some other parts of the world like Syria and Lebanon) that has become very popular very quickly in Germany within the last decade or so, most prominently by the Club Mate brand. They have quickly become a favorite among cafe and bar owners who want to offer more local products with some character to it throughout all of Germany and they are doing a good job of walking the fine line between getting more and more popular and still holding on to their core brand values and identity. My personal favorite is the Cola-Orange mix aptly named after the German linguistic concoction "Misch-Masch" with a slightly different bottle design than the rest of their drinks. If you ever come across that light-blue label with the red cap, go ahead and treat yourself! Now, the Karamel-Kaffee flavor has already sparked some polarizing conversations, some love it, some hate it. I usually end up getting it, like once or twice a year. It just feels like there's a time and place for it. When you know, you just know. I am aware of how pathetic this sounds but hey, you've come this far, so here's my conclusion: I really appreciate that fritz really does branch out with drinks like this and completely owns up to it in a way. I'm sure this flavour has not been selling super well and they are quite big now so they don't rely on creativity as much anymore but it's been available for years and still is! And I kinda love the loyalty to the few people out there who love that drink.
Anyway, greetings from a soft drink enthusiast from Germany and I'm glad you didn't hate it James!
Fun fact though: to my knowledge Fritz relies on Coca Cola for its distribution.
@@johnmortenmichaelis5635 I believe you, but unfortunately I couldn't find anything about that in my - admittedly short - online search. The only connection I found was a threatening lawsuit over an early campaign were the posters would show Coca Cola being dumped. They decided to be the bigger men (and save legal money) and withdrew the campaign. Would indeed be a very interesting fact though!
Also they do cool stuff like the "Pfand gehört daneben"-campain (to encourage putting bottles with deposit next to rubbish bins instead of inside, so people who collect them for money don't have to sort through the garbage ... and beach clean ups, friendly fire.. seems good to me
@@johnuferbach9166 Who the f**** throws his Pfand into the trash anyways?! I take everything with me to get my damn Pfand back and buy new bottles and cans.
@@SchwachsinnProduzent Lots of people in bigger cities, particularly the party-crowd on their way home from clubbing. Wherever people go to a "kiosk" and buy a single drink to be consumed on the go, they are very likely to just drop the bottle next to a trash can (or into it, if they don't know how to behave) instead of carrying a single stray bottle home.
Would love to see a Japanese canned coffee comparison. They're all dreadfully sweet, but I could watch James grimace all day.
There are quite a few that are just black coffee instead of the milk coffee
I lived in Japan for 3 years and tried many of the Japanese canned coffees. They were pretty much brand-only differences. As for the actual coffees, you basically had the following three categories:
1. Black
2. Sweet Black
3. Sweet Milky
All the ones that claimed to be espresso, or gourmet, or latte, or anything else, tasted exactly the same as anything else that fell into the three above categories. It was nice, however, to have inexpensive caffeine delivery basically everywhere.
There is good (really, really good) coffee in Japan. You just have to go to the local cafes.
Oooooh I want that video
That's how I actually started drinking coffee 😅
I understand it's not everyone's can of coffee

1shot of espresso/equivalent of Moka pot coffee, over ice with a 375 can of vanilla coca cola. it's utterly delicious
Whoah, I am definitely testing this out soon!
It sounds like blasphemy but so good at the same time
375 cans of coke sounds alot
Might have to try. I always sip espresso and coke back to back and the flavors work very well together, I just don’t know about mixing the two.
I'm sus about this.

This was truly entertaining! I just became a flight attendant this year and I bought the aeropress after hearing you talk about it. It saved my life, to be dramatic
I feel compelled to write this comment on a 3 years old video, but here goes: I am slowly coming to terms with the fact that I think I like "bad coffee", because my daily driver is just a cheap coffeemaker using off-the-shelf ground coffee and bottled water, but also I really like the Coca-cola coffee drink. It makes me sad to know I might not be able to share a coffee with James, but I stand by my "bad" choices. Thank you for reading this, anybody who does.
I also think CoffeCoke is good, it's better than cherry coke or vanilla coke, and though I might not have loved it at first it definitely grew on me.
I like "bad" coffee too, for a given value of bad. Most of the instant, filter, etc coffees I see called bad I genuinely enjoy.
I do distinctly remember going to a job interview once where the coffee they served was undrinkable. So I definitely don't like all bad coffee.
All that said, I rarely drink coffee because it messes with my stomach, so I think I just never developed my coffee sense enough to start thinking the bad stuff is bad. As a beer enthusiast I know that developing the senses and knowledge needed to know when something is bad and what is bad about it takes experience and time.
I like it too, even if its considered a bad coffee taste. But just combining some of the shelf moka coffee and some diet cola results into better flavor in my opinion. Coca Cola makes the coffee taste more exaggerated.
Im at a point in my life when you cant just drink regular cola anymore because of health reasons, sure it is tasty, but taste alone doesnt make up for health damage. The added caffeine, which is very welcome from time to time, makes it almost worth drinking once in a while. Cant be a part of a diet though...
Never tried the Karamell-Kaffee, but I've loved basic Fritz Kola for years :) Great stuff.
Fritz Kola and their lemonade are a thing of beauty
Karamell-Kaffee is my fav one, highly recommend it

After each video you create I think to myself just how much we have in common, especially taste preferences and a penchant for sarcasm. Then you opened the bottle with a spoon and broadened the gap. Well done man. Well done.
Colombian Cooler: Instant Coffee + Coca-cola. A pre-Red bull caffeine source for exam prep.
You do like somethings James. You made me appreciate Coca Cola for a second. Well theoretically.
James describing original Coca-Cola is actually more compelling than any Coke advertising I’ve ever seen.
My goodness your showmanship, performing talents, penchant for comedy, and editing, so...on...point! Also deepened that special place in my heart for you with your journalistic integrity at the beginning and acknowledgment of producer differences. Thank you!

This was amazing and hysterical. Couldn't possibly have been any better and I laughed at pretty much every comment. This series is flourishing better than I could have hoped. Bravo!
Your production value has gone up! Lovely intro and graphics!
James Hoffmann It looks good, its the path many vloggers go. But I actually like the minimalistic approach.

he talks to his soft drinks the way i talk to my dog when he does his business indoors.
A small, local coffee place in DC around where I work has a drink on their menu that they've named the Americola, and it's exactly what you'd think. Americano with coke instead of water. I get it on occasion, it's quite good, though obviously very sweet. Good coffee + coke = good coffee cola.

I love it how you are able to bring informative content with subtle humor that still makes me laugh hard. Great video, also saves my pennies if either of these ever get to my sight.
"I am not one of those people. I need a bottle opener" proceeded by him opening a bottle with a spoon.
I just saw Coffee Coca-Cola in the store yesterday in the US for the first time, and am glad you already had a video on it to help me resist the temptation to try something that every instinct tells me would be atrocious.
I dunno you might have different tastes than him...
@@randommcranderson5155 Right-o--I enjoy the Coke with coffee. I look for the zero sugar version, which lately has been very hard to find.

theyve started selling that coffee coke in the uk btw james, i bought some in canterbury last week and it was... not good.

This is your best video so far. My girlfriend (who is sick to death of me talking about coffee + playing your videoes) is in stitches every time I show her you opening that bottle. Keep it up James!
The coke no sugar plus coffee I had once (Australia) was honestly delicious - one of the tastiest soft drinks i've had. Have not been able to find it anywhere since, so i'm assuming it's been discontinued sadly.
your intros are getting better and better from year to year. I'm excited to see the intro in 2021 for the pour over guide. :D

Coffee-Coke finally came to the US!!! I drank it in Korea, and LOVED IT! I'm so happy.
Love starting my day with your videos. Thank you :-)
We've had Coca-Cola coffee in Australia for about a year or more now, on and off.
I didn't like it but my father enjoyed it.
I had the Japanese version of coke + coffee and it was fun and interesting. Not an everyday drink to be sure, but I was glad to have tasted it. I agree with the tiramisu note.
Brilliant James. Thanks for the laugh this morning.
Great intro shot of the cold can and bottle 👍
Also the introspective "do i like anything" moment at the end was great!
I actually absolutely love the coffee fritz-kola. I'm generally obsessed with cola and will try any new brand or flavor I can get my hands on, and fritz-kola karamell-kaffee is my second favourite cola I've tried so far. I do seem to have a weird palate though, because most people I know don't really like this one or my #1 favourite.

These videos are now genuinely funny on purpose. Keep them coming
Hahaha this was hilarious 😂 and so happy to see you on board with “I drink it so you don’t have to” idea 👊 epic James
You're getting really really good at this, James! I thoroughly enjoyed this silly video!
Firstly, your description of Coca-Cola was beautiful and true.
Secondly, your taste test was beautiful and hilarious!
Well done 👍🤣
Oh my gosh I laughed so much the moment you reacted to tasting the coca-cola. We had it briefly here in Australia and yes it's pretty disgusting.
Another delicious treat I love to make myself is soda water, lavender syrup (homemade, the creamy floral instead of the artificial sharp soapy version), some bitters, fresh lime. It's very fragrant and tastes more like a cocktail than a coffee drink. Would pair well with a nice botanical or floral gin
I enjoyed the Fritz caramel and coffee cola. But not with focus on the coffee flavor - just as a funny soda.
Coke did a limited release of Coffee-Cola in Australia last year sometime.
I didn't try their version, but I mixed some myself and enjoyed it.
I too have tried the Vietnamese coffee coke and I love it!
The Fritz one is like one of my favorite Colas. Have been drinking it pretty regularly for years. But it's been discontinued now so I had to switch to Mate Cola (I don't like Mate itself but the Cola is amazing). If I had to make a top 3 of Colas it would probably be Fritz Coffee, Club-Mate Cola and Coca Cola Apple.
I was eager to see your reaction. Coca-Cola released this coffee version in Brazil as well and when I tasted I had the exactly same reaction. It tastes bad and the after taste is even worse, since it is mainly the bad quality coffee aftertaste and loads of sugar.
Curiously enough, I've always loved the coca cola products bottled in my towns and could never stomach those from other cities, let alone countries. Coke downtown with some tacos? Blissful. Coke with a pizza in Rome? Barf-inducing. Well, for a year or so they've been releasing coffee coke over here, and you know what? I love it. I find it delicious and almost addictive. They just introduced a new vanilla coffee coke that tastes even better, despite me typing those words feeling like some sort of betrayal. I really think it comes down to the water used by the different bottlers, and not a sudden inability of the coca cola company to design a drink that tastes good.
Depending on where you buy your Coke, it is using different water with the same coca cola sirup. In fast-food-restaurants like Mc Donalds they just use the tap water inside the restaurant to create the cola as it is needed. That's why you can find higher concentrations of unhealthy chemicals in certain cities than others and higher as in regular bottled cola.
I tried the recent release of the Coke w/coffee products in the US and enjoyed both. Perfect? No, not at all. But the vanilla was good.
Astonishing pour over guide video James, now my coffee will be greater than ever : D
I really wish that I had found this before I purchased the coffee Coke in the states. It was like flat Coke with something that had a coffee-flavor to it. I wholeheartedly agree with James’ assessment.
Just recently I made a really nice espresso, and a little while after I had an ice cold can of coke. The espresso aftertaste mixed with the first mouthful of coke was actually incredible. I’d like to try one of these drinks
Hello! Newbie coffee fan here who’s learning to diy and really enjoys your vids: thanks! Video request; jack leveler and your opinion/philosophy on tamping.
So much content lately! :D
"Do I like anything?" 😂 I ask myself that question all the time!
I totally love the Fritz-Kola one. Not from the point of coffee taste, but as an not chemical and sour tasting alternativ to energydrinks.
It made me to a lot hard nightshifts working at a bar 👍
Watching you open that bottle is super enjoyable. Hope you finished that bottle.
I actually really enjoy a black coffee and Coke or Pepsi together. A few sips of coffee followed by a bit of cola. I don't mix them, but feel the 2 distinct flavours of coffee and cola compliment each other separately. Might just be my warped pallete...
I love how extra these tasting videos are hahaha
Fritz Kola is one of my favourite Cola Drinks but I never saw the coffee one anywhere. Have to try it!
Where I live (Guadalajara, México), inside my university was a bad coffee shop that made a beverage called “trailero” (truck driver). A can of coca cola with three ice cubes of coffee. Interesthing traste, not great, but that really awakes you to continue with school labor.
Another amazing episode! I wonder what are your thoughts on Stumptown's canned Nitro Cold Brew? It has a great drinking experiencing and has that nitrogen foam which makes it feel almost like a soft-drink (or a beer).
James you are the man! I literally sit here having just mixed a cold 50/50 Pepsi/Drip blend. Idly opened RUclips to check new stuff and...BAM!
As everyone here, it’s the video that make me laugh the most ! You don’t only have great barista’s skills but also super confident in front of the camera. I writing here from France and I remember that back in 2008, Coca-cola launched something comparable called “Coca-cola Blāk” and I have to admit that... I kinda like it. I don’t know if the recipe is the same but I wish I could taste it again...
I recently discovered your channel and I do appreciate your approach. For now, I say thank you for reading and I hope you have a great day ! 😉🤙

“... you couldn’t do better that that ****cola!” Ok, this is The statement man. I love the way you stand for Italian coffee style 😎 you know the taste and definitely it won’t be in a can of ****Cola.
Again, great video, thanks for sharing.
Thanks for being the brave one to try these weird concoctions to save us the rest of us from venturing away from our java. Maybe we should send you you a sampler of canned coffee offerings from Japanese vending machines.
Some of those are alright.
I tried some of the coca-cola coffee amalgamation, and I really LOVED it. It was sweet and smooth. The coffee actually took some of the "bite" off of the coca-cola flavor. I don't know if the American version is different from the Italian one.
Whoever does the filming/producing of these is a genius.
About 15/16 years ago, I used to drink a cola-coffee. It was Pepsi-Chino and I loved it. It was in the uk.
I tried the Coke Coffee a couple of years when it was released. I love Coke and coffee--but not together. It had a weird aftertaste. I never bought it again, but I did drink the 4 cans in the box it came in. It's something I could easily live without.
At my universities coffee shop (a really good stop), there was a seasonal drink with sarsaparilla, root beer (the good stuff) and espresso. Topped with a orange peel slice and a cherry (the really good kind).
I loved that drink so much. It was delicious
The intro is insane hahaha 😍👌
5:05 " with filth" coupled with the close up pretty much sums up this video. haha

that didn't work for that well for me last time, now I have seen this video, I'll have to try that atrocity for myself...
This was so good I had to watch it twice.
I had a drink in Firenze made with espresso, raw sugar, tonic or club soda...can't remember. Shaken with ice. Really really good.
Anyone else remember Coke Black from a decade or two ago here in the United States? Wonder if that was similar to this Italian Coke and Coffee beverage

I loved hearing James, with his incredibly educated and developed palate talk seriously about the flavour of coca cola. Very cool!
Epic product shot intro 🥤
I've mixed cold coffee and coke myself and liked it, I used a coffee I already knew I liked though.
Have you ever had a Manhattan Special Espresso Soda? Classic Italian-American drink. Very sweet but I have fond memories of it and I still enjoy it.
I discovered coffee with cola recently, and it's my very favourite drink now.
This is so enjoyable to watch. Pls make a whole series where you rant about different things. Doesn't have to be connected to coffee xD
I really like this video, you were a lot more tongue and cheek in it than you usually are in your videos I feel like, overall just a nice, relaxed, funny video.
Coffee-Cola sounds terrible to me too, definitely agree on how a lot of "coffee things" tend to represent the less pleasant parts of coffee for some reason, too, I've never gotten that.
Watching this a few years later, and only just starting to get into coffee, is amusing, because I thought the Coffee Coke was fantastic.
In high school in the 90s Pepsi was doing a northeast regional release of a drink called Pepsi Kona and I used to drink a can of it every morning. Sometimes I will take a pepsi and add a shot of espresso or strong coffee to it to relive that nostalgia.
When they announced the Coke with coffee in Australia last year, I was looking forward to trying it. They previously had a product in other markets (I think India if my memory serves me correctly but could be mistaken) called something like Coke Black, which was a different coffee plus Coke drink. Id heard that drink was quite nice, and tasted a lot like Kahlua and Coke which is a drink I've always enjoyed. That Coke drink is absolutely vile. They sold it in small cans for $1 to get you to try it. I didn't finish the can. I dont know how they could see a market for that.
Would like to see you do more reviews like this, even if they are gross. Occasionally you might find a bit of a gem. I've noticed 7/11 selling "sparkling coffee" recently for very cheap. Probably not a sign of quality.
Coca-Cola BlāK was available in the States for a couple minutes during the mid 2000s, and I loved it, though I may not have had the most refined palate while I was young... But I've always loved what has been refereed to in local coffee houses (at least) in Southern California as Black Cola, aka a shot of chilled espresso in a glass of cola...
hi James, I've been thinking about buying a grinder. Do you have any recommendations on a budget of around 50-70 euros?
