At 10:25 Bobby says something that does not get picked up in this version of the pod, so I went to the same moment in the audio pod, here is his comment: "It's the new Thanos. And by the way, if you'd like to make your own Wizard of Oz film at home you can, because it's entered the public domain."
Hopefully this doesn’t get deleted 🤞: Chris’ list: 1. The Great Escape 2. Inglourious Basterds 3. The Bridge at Remagen 4. The Dirty Dozen 5. Paisan Rob’s list: 1. The Thin Red Line 2. Inglourious Basterds 3. Grave of the Fireflies 4. Lust, Caution 5. Saving Private Ryan Sean’s list: 1. The Bridge on the River Kwai 2. Inglourious Basterds 3. The Train 4. Cabaret 5. A Matter of Life and Death
Inglorious Basterds shouldn't qualify as it's alternative and so overrated. Some pretty iconic movies not making any of the list like das boat is pretty bad.
That top 3 beats me! I'd have been remiss to mention Melville's masterpiece. Great catch! But as entertaining as Inglorious Basterds is I don't consider it a WW2 film. To me, it's comic fantasy. I'd have probably gone with The Carabineers if I wanted a comedy cause it's somehow both funny and boring, thus expressing the banality of war. Then I'd probably of rounded it off with Son of Saul or Zone of Interest. But I'm embarrassed to say I've never seen Guns of Navarone. But your esteem for it will make me remedy that ASAP. Thanks for the heads up.
I think it’s important to note about the impact of Schindler’s list. Schindler’s list led to Spielberg creating the Shoah Foundation, which is an organization that interviewed and recorded survivors while they were still alive. My grandmother was one of those people. Before her interview , she never spoke of the war. Only after her interview did she start slowly telling us stories. One of the reasons she decided to do it was because she knew Steven Spielberg was behind it.
Some corrections: Pan’s Labyrinth takes place in the Spanish civil war (1930s), not world war 2 (in which Spain didn’t participate). Greyhound takes place on a destroyer (fletcher class, if you want to be specific), not an aircraft carrier. I think it’s really tough to sell Cabaret as a ww2 film. WW2 hasn’t even started by the time the movie ends.
Not entirely true that Spain did not participate in WW2. The Franco regime was allied with the Axis and assisted them with military operations. Also many Spaniards volunteered to fight for the Axis and Allied powers. On paper Spain was “neutral” but they weren’t actually
The Spanish Civil War was a test run for WWII. The Germans, Italians and Soviets tested out a bunch of stuff, sent material and expeditionary forces like the German Legion Condor. I'd let it count because they also included movies about the Weimar Republic/ the inter war period.
Stunned Kelly's Heros didn't make CR's list Eastwood, Savalas, Rickles, O'Connor, and Sutherland in a heist movie!!! Loved the shout out to The Keep, completely bizarre, and Overlord, Nazi zombies. No sub movies?! The Enemy Below, Run Silent, Run Deep, Das Boot anyone? Sad Amanda couldn't join in. She would have been miserable 😂
Can/do they release the actual lists and HOF's in writing somewhere? I want to go watch these movies but I can't write things down while I listen usually.
1. Great escape 2. Guns of navarone 3. Bridge on river kwai 4. The longest day 5. Dirty dozen Hon. Mentions battle of the bulge In harms way and run silent run deep kellys heroes i also love chris giving a shoutout to von ryans express 😂
The Devil's Brigade is one I recently watched for the first time. Pretty great "guys on a mission movie" in the vein of The Dirty Dozen. Also, though it's been getting more attention in the last few years, The Train & Anthropoid are worth mentioning. Phenomenal.
1. Das Boot 2. Der Untergang 3. Come and See 4. Schindler's List 5. Saving Private Ryan Hon mentions: Where Eagles Dare, The Great Escape, The Bridge on the River Kwai, The City of Life and Death, Letters from Iwo Jima
Do you prefer the theatrical cut of Das Boot or is it worth it to watch the 3.5 hour cut? I'm gonna watch it this week and would love your take since it's your favorite.
@@chasecardiff7741 I would say director's cut definitely. It's originally cut down from a 5-hr miniseries so I think the 3.5hr pacing is better than the theatrical 2.5hr cut and the new material is an improvement. Also it has a new 5.1 sound mix and it's worth it for that alone.
My top 5 in no particular order: saving private Ryan, A bridge to far, Schindler’s list, Bridge over the river Kwai and finally Downfall. There are a lot more that just as good but I had to pick 5. Honourable mention: Oppenheimer.
In Saving Private Ryan, they should have hidden and just blown the bridge when the first Tiger tank was attempting to cross. And fallen back into more defensible positions.
Watch the Sam Fuller director's cut of The Big Red One. Fuller wrote the novel and gets much more of the insanity of war into it as opposed to the good original release.
CR waxing on about how his father was an infant during the bombing in World War 2 certainly explains where CR gets his looks from. Also talking about this as part of his family's "MYTHOLOGY" like its written by Tolken himself is a new high for him.

Forbidden Games Ashes and Diamonds The Steel Helmet Son of Saul Fires on the Plain The Human Condition Black Reign The Marriage of Maria Braun Stray Dog I Live in Fear Diamonds of the Night The Creamator A Man Escaped Hiroshima Mon Amour The Thrid Part of the Night Lacombe, Lucien Underground
I may have missed it, but did anyone mention The Great Dictator? My favourite comedy and a big middle finger to Hitler from the world's greatest comedian.
I get not putting it in your top 5 because it’s not a WW2 film in the sense this exercise is looking for, but how does Casablanca not even get a mention at any point?
Alec Guinness in Mute Witness. I only recently discovered this unearthed gem of Suspense Horror Genre greatness. Check it out. (Supposedly the director was able to film him in a car for only a few minutes, then a year or so later found this movie to use it in, possibly his last screen role, not sure exactly, but someone will correct me if needed). Mute Witness. Great discovery. Not much to do with WW2.
You guys need to be putting the movie titles up in graphics…otherwise I have to guess how to spell some of these titles or directors names and that isn’t going to work
Chris: I'm making an imaginary list of movies that Rick Dalton could've been in! I laughed so hard! I love Pearl Harbor! I know, not that many people liked it. I think, it's just as important as Tora Tora Tora. BTW! If Wicked wins for Best Picture at the 2025 Oscars. So, what Sean. Is it really that big a deal. Giving out Oscars to half a movie. They gave out Oscars to a lot of movies that never should've won. The 2nd one will be out next year.
Should a World War II movie be "rewatchable"? Doesn't that just point to the moral emptiness of Basterds? Come and See is a World War II movie, a real and great one, because it's horrific, because you don't want to watch it again.
Way to pretentious lists! This is easy. 1. Saving Private Ryan 2. Where Eagles Dare 3. Tora Tora Tora 4. Kelly's Heroes 5. The Great Escape Honorable mentions, Guns of Navarone, Fury, Inglorious Bastards, A Bridge Too Far, Dirty Dozen, Enemy at the Gates.
Inglourious Basterds??? That's like saying Life of Brian is a Biblical movie. The opening scene has a realistic feeling to it, but the rest of the movie is pure fantasy. At least Saving Private Ryan could be a realistic plot, even if it is fiction. Tarantino could've had a crazy vampire or zombie 3rd act and it wouldn't have been out of place. His movie is set in another dimension.

Doing the lord's work. Watching them silently stare out at us was unnerving.
lol thanks that was so creepy
Hopefully this doesn’t get deleted 🤞:
Chris’ list:
1. The Great Escape
2. Inglourious Basterds
3. The Bridge at Remagen

3. The Train

Damn Cabaret is a fucking good pick
Great job, thanks. No Patton? Fail.
No love for Army of Shadows or Come and See? Pathetic
Inglorious Basterds shouldn't qualify as it's alternative and so overrated. Some pretty iconic movies not making any of the list like das boat is pretty bad.
Chris list would be closest to mine love all the 50s and 60s war movies what about the longest day?
Even before hearing the podcast, I knew Rob Mahoney would get Grave of the Fireflies in his list. It's an incredible and crushing watch.
Big oof for Bobby Wagner's audio getting cut out of the podcast
Too hot for RUclips
IMHO
1. Army of Shadows
2. Come and See
3. The Thin Red Line
4. Inglourious Basterds
5. The Guns of Navarone
Honorable Mention: The Zone of Interest

@@Missmam_micdrop amazing movie with so many unforgettable moments.

4. The Great Escape
5. Bridge Over the River Kwai
1. Dirty Dozen

This is what The Big Picture does best!!!!!! Thanks guys.
"Pan's Labyrinth" actually takes place during the Spanish Civil War in Spain that coincided with WWII.
The Spanish Civil War was a test run for WWII. The Germans, Italians and Soviets tested out a bunch of stuff, sent material and expeditionary forces like the German Legion Condor. I'd let it count because they also included movies about the Weimar Republic/ the inter war period.
Spanish civil war ended before ww2 began
I've only seen it once many many many years ago and even I knew this

Rob trying to sell CR on Grave of the Fireflies. My brother.

Some dark horse WWII that are amazing: The Forgotten Battle (Dutch) Downfall (German) The 12th Man (Norway) and Narvik (Norway, I think)

Indeed. COD: World at War mission: "Vendetta"
Night Train to Munich. They mentioned The Third Man which is AMAZING but Night Train to Munich is also by Carol Reed and just fantastic.
Totally agree with Rob Mahony! Thin Red Line is a great movie! Hans Zimmer's score is amazing and the cast is just ridiculous.

1:04 The “Navy Guy” is Douglas MacArthur (who was actually an Army guy). The biopic with Gregory Peck is bad.
Thin red line. Life is beautiful. Empire of the sun. Enemy at the gates. The great escape
Now why was Harris Dickinson’s character even in Blitz, that’s what I want to know. Felt like something either got forgotten or cut for time
