For the guy asking about D2 rusting: I live in the Dallas metroplex, where the air can get pretty humid. I carry an Izula in 1095, and the edge will take a patina within seconds of use, but it never goes and further than that, and not even the entire edge patinas. I have a buddy who carries a D2 flipper that I sharpened as a favor, and I noted little spots of surface rust. It’s only a problem if you’re vain enough to have totally patina-free blade profile, but a little steel wool polishing should keep it shiny.

    • @sheltermonkey6065
      @sheltermonkey6065 3 года назад +1

You say the air can get pretty humid where you live, but you live in an air-conditioned house, right? Your car has AC, right? And you probably work in an air-conditioned office. There's a reason almost zero percent of knives from 100 years ago are still around: They got rusty so people discarded them.

    • @Deibodese
      @Deibodese 3 года назад +1

That’s a good point. 🤔 Modern conveniences would definitely make it much easier to preserve knives that are more prone to rusting. I hadn’t considered that before.

    • @Alexander210

It depends on what you do and where you live. I live in San Antonio, Texas (hi, neighbor) and I work outside. It can be a bit humid where I live at times, but nothing like Houston's humidity. I've used D2 from different manufacturers and all of them rust. The reason being is because they're in my pocket and wear jeans type material. It gets damp w sweat, humidity, etc. I love D2 in my field because I can abuse it and not worry about it chipping. S35vn works really well, too. Anyway, if you use EDCI solution on your D2 blades, they help stop the rust. I have had tremendous success w it and kept rust to a very bare minimum. Of course YMMV. Hope this helps!

I carry a RAT Model 1 in D2. It's in my jeans pocket every day for years. Am north of Texas on the arid Great Plains. My workplace isn't air-conditioned. I've not seen any rust or patina on the blade. I haven't yet figured out how to sharpen the thing. It quickly goes from scary sharp to almost sharp . And then stays fairly sharp for a long time.

    Hi David,
My first question was answered brilliantly, so here I go again! Hope you can help me out with another one similar to my 1st question:
I'm looking for a folding knife, with the following features:
    1) Flipper (that becomes a "guard")
    2) Axis or Similar Cross-Bar Lock (**MUST** be bank-vault, bomb-proof strong)
    3) Thumb Hole, either oval or round, doesn't matter, but **MUST** have it...
    4) About 3" or more Blade Length
    5) Pointy, not Wharncliffe, but needs some belly.
    6) Optional, but would be game-winning: Full Flat Grind, finger choil, assist or bearings in the pivot and Deep Carry Pocket Clip
    7) See if you can recommend me a budget and a premium version each.
    Thanks so much!

Need a suggestion for a emplacement knife for work, I currently have a CRKT M16 3 inch Tanto that I have to carry appendix as my front pocket is covered by my duty holster. I want a tough knife that can go a while without needing to be sharpened, can be deployed with a gloved hand if needed, is a bit slimmer or less poky in the stomach and preferably under $100 but can go as high as $150. The only thing it can’t be is a fixed blade as my department policy doesn’t allow us to carry them. My secondary knife in my left pocket is a Kershaw Dividend Composite. Love D2 but treatment does make a difference. Only time I've had it rust is when I put a knife away wet/dirty after camping. Even then it was surface rust that cleaned up with only moderate effort (had to disassemble to clean) and no edge damage. I agree with DCA - steel has some relevance but just buy what you like and leave the steel snobs to fight each other over which is best. Perfection never comes so buy whatever makes you happy - these great vids will help you make a good choice!!

Hi there, I own several bushcrafting fixed blades (Mora's and other Scandi grind knives) but am looking for an EDC fixed blade with slightly different characteristics. I would like a thiner slicing blade, capable of skinning/gutting and daily food prep, but also strong enough to do other daily tasks. I won't be abusing it like a work knife on a building site, and would carry a small keychain pry bar as well. I like wooden handles and leather sheaths, but am happy to go aftermarket for the sheath. I am thinking a little bit of an updated version of that wicked sharp carbon steel knife your grandmother might have had in the kitchen, but in a smaller, tougher package. In an ideal scenario I would carry it either on my belt or inside the waistband. I have larger than average hands. Blade length doesn't need to be that long. Open to different blade steels. I actually quite liked the L.T. Wright Camp MUK, but am open to lots of options.

I work in a bar and the D2 elementum is my work knife. I have, after months of abusing it, started to get some minor discoloration and small rust spots. The only rust I've seen on my original Paramilitary with CPM D2 steel was when my dad flipped his small sailboat with me in it and we wound up in the saltwater bay. The rust on the blade came right off, except for some very minor pitting. The scale standoffs got very rusty, very quickly. Each time I see the remaining slight damage to the knife, I think of my dad. Good times.

We all come from different backgrounds, obviously, and I may believe that last question wasn’t a joke. Although my background involved combat handgunning, close quarters combat, and trench warfare, my experience with “high end” knives was VASTLY limited until I actually got into the knife game. My questions, back in the days, would’ve been the same, since Marines pretty much carried Cold Steel, KaBar, and of course everything Gerber sent us. So I think the question eluded more to of what DCA might consider a solid, hardcore, combat war fighting knife. Right now I am VERY satisfied with the Protech SBR Fixed Blade and for folding knives, I’m really enjoying the Adamas in Cruwear.

DCA - You are wise and you are good. Talk to us about knife steel and edge retention. I tend to get shaving edges on my folders using (for instance) the Spyderco Gauntlet. When I take down boxes whether using my Buck 110 in 420 HC, my Spyderco Endura in VG10, my Para 3 in CTS BD1N, etc. I seem to get similar results. After a box or two, none will shave. Then they all sharpen back to shaving sharp pretty easily. I guess I don't see much difference.
Are those steels too similar? Are my expectations goofy? What is an example of good edge retention vs. average?

For choppers / small machetes I always go for something fast, hard hitting, and which can rock a snap cut - which I find exceptionally effective and satisfying. I am currently using a Tops Armageddon (fantastic blade) but interested in trying something else which could go in my kit but perform like the Armageddon, which also baton like a beast. Must be able to maintain and not break the blade while on travel status. Currently I am in the Pacific Northwest for a while, but might have to jump up to Alaska to deal with some landslides. I have an affinity for compound grinds and don’t need anything with a full flat grind. Preferred steel is 1095 and with a full multi position long handle that’s grippy enough to not use a lanyard. Able to fit in a 5.11 Rush 72 pack is a plus.

Building bushcraft shelters, tent stakes, bushcraft furniture, whittling, carving walking staffs, processing firewood (breaking the branches down & batoning) and various bushcraft projects. I stay outside in the humid but mild summers & subzero temps winters. None need sharpening. They need periodic cleaning & stopping but no need for 'sharpening'. Are there any dagger style folders on the market that are truly double edged? I understand the reasoning for being sharpened only on one side, but are there are any knives where the grip layout can safely accommodate 2 edges? I have never really liked the look of OTF's so those are out.

Im looking at the TOPS Street Scalpel and the Boker Ylvi (sp?) Are there any other suggestions that y'all guys have? Thanks in advance! Cheers from San Antonio, Texas! 🍻

Hey DCA, I love my cleaver blades. Berg Blades Golem, Kizer Sheepdog XL and mini, civivi bullmastiff and bullmastiff mini, CJRB tigris and crag… are there any beefy hall of fame large folding style cleaver blades that I’m missing?

DCA, love the videos. I have a question for the next FAQ. I have a couple of folders that came stiff out of the box. what is the best way to get the knife to open smoothly. I have tried oil and loosening the pivots and they either become too loose or they are back to stiff. is it a use issue? will they eventually loosen? Some I won't be using everyday so that may take forever. Thanks

Hi David. I really enjoy your vids! I almost exclusively use my old Nieto 440c lockback knife for fruit peeling and slicing and for steak cutting. I m thinking of upgrading to a Cold Steel Lucky and I wonder if you can recommend any alternative or anything similar preferably with locking blade. Thanks and keep up the good work!

    Hey DCA and/or Seth,
What's the best way to contact production companies and convince them to make more knives how we want? For example, I love my SOG terminus xr but want a wharncliffe version, and cjrb's recoil lock just needs a little work on the lock "actuator" to be amazing and should be put on more flipper knives.
    Thanks!

Question: One of my friends showed me his pocket knife and the blade on it wasnt anything i've seen before and cant find. He called the blade edge a H blade and its not like a serrated blade. How the H blade is used is just to cut straight down. No need to do any sawing motion at all. Hopefully you can help me out. Thank you for all your work.

Great show as always, and this time I have a question! Any recommendations when it comes to a folding tanto style blade? They don't seem very popular, at least when I was looking for some options, and I would love so have your insight on the subject. Price range I'm looking for is around $100, lower or slightly higher is fine. Thank you for your time.

Aside from CRK, what are some mid-tech non-automatic folders for lefties that are good for the price? Would consider saving for something like a Grimsmo or similar. Rockstead is a bit beyond what I want to spend at this point in my collection journey. But if I drop the coin, I’d much prefer something intentionally designed for my hand. Thanks!

Hey David: Explain the logic behind lanyard holes for both fixed blades and folders. They seem to compromise a knife’s aesthetics and ergonomics without offering enough benefit in return. Why do most knives possess a design element that seems better omitted? Thanks!

👍. Your L.T. Wright CampMuk is one beautiful knife. It also appears to be the right size to be very useful. I agree, the Nessmuk shape is very graceful. I have one made by a custom knifemaker in Dallas, Jim Eriksen, with a huge elk antler crown handle. My hands are large enough that they appreciate chunky handles. I’m headed to see if I can find CampMuk. 😂😂😂

I've played with knives since 3 yrs. old, and spent 3 decades working in kitchens. Cuts are just a part of the deal, no matter how experienced you are. How BAD, and frequent, the cuts are depends a lot on experience. I have lots of scars on my hands and fingers, some of them recent.

DCA friend, I love washers and I'm sick of bearings (I don't hate them but I thing they're overhyped) I am looking for washer based flippers right now I have the skyline and the cutjack and both are absolutely amazing, do you have any other suggestions? And while you're at it possibly what are some washer based knives with good action in general. One last point I'm really into sleeper knives or under appreciated knives so anything unusual is always cool.

DCA---I'm having a bit of a battle on the Spyderco forum about warranty responses from different companies. Please inform us of what we SHOULD expect from a decent company as far as warranty and what companies have the best and worst warranty promises. I have excellent experiences with Essee, Buck and Benchmade but I wonder whether people or retailers have a particular favorite for warranty response.

    DCA,
Hardly ever disagree with you but you missed it on the D2 steel rusting. It Rusts bad. I own a few and they've all rusted even after trying to keep clean. Heck my Benchmade S30V is now rusting.
Live in Oklahoma where is hot... Maybe it's sweat, but during EDC you run into all kinds of fluids. Anyways, FYI.

Where I work, I am constantly cutting boxes and opening bags, been looking for a tough blade with good edge retention. I have considered a delica in k390 or getting a native 5 in maxamet that looks to have better ergos. Do you have any other suggestions with comfortable ergos, somewhat lightweight, has good edge retension and toughness, and under 200?
