This is a how to video on how to build a simple, cheap, and effective aquarium filter for your aquarium or fish tank.
You have to wait until the media is cycled and saturated with bacteria. It will begin moving like in the video within weeks.

I made this filter for a friend's tank and it not only looks like an amazing underwater waterfall in the background, but once it went live and kicked in, the water turned crystal clear. Thanks for sharing this %100 project! Bet your book is full of them.
I raise shrimp for myself and my friends for hydroponic gardening, I still use this method, ten years after watching your video here, keeps the tanks healthy and spotless, thanks King!
Of all the clips I've watched on filters, this is by far the best, straightforward and the easiest for anybody to do it themselves, i can now make it myself, thanks a lot, i will most definitely be on the look out for more of your clips
I’ve followed you for over a year and this is the first time I’ve seen your earlier videos, big difference. But I’m glad you are here to teach us. Thank you
YOU'RE A FREAKING GENIUS! this is like so simple, but it's like the most effective thing ever
Top tip Joey. Thank You. Although it's surplus to requirements I now run 2 of these in my main tank for 2 reasons.
1• The movement of the media makes it possibly the best way of 'speed-seeding' a new tank
2• In the event of a power outage I have 2 matured bio-filters that can each be powered by a battery air pump.
For even less drilling, wrap a broad strip of sponge around the airline until it fits snugly in the neck of the bottle.
i love these old videos haha even though i seen them long time ago! thanks joey!
first times i thought that sponge was potato :D
I tought the sponge was a eaten indian mango
I thought grilled apple lol
I thought a zebra
Tarash Sajaia i thought it was a cucumber
I thought it was the fish
Cool I am going to copy you. Fantastic! I love see things that smart people can share. Many thanks. Cheers xxx
ThX for the ingenuity!
Love thi idea. Perfect upcycling project & actually looks very cool i operation. Will definatly try this. Cheers from Melbourne, Australia : )

do this filter also function as a oxygen giver?
+kimberly giron sure
Great video . You are so informative about how to keep fish healthy . After watching your videos I have been upgrading all my filters and making videos . Thank you again . Keep up the great work
it really amazed me so much! thanks man, I hope you upload more ..
pretty badass. and it actually does look pretty cool. I have a 55 gallon tank with a turtle how large of a bottle and how much of the medium would you recommend?
I have a 100 gallon tank with a turtle, and have the same question mate
Turtles are much more dirty than fish. I would use a way bigger version.
Just wanted to let you know that this is very cool! Definitely something to consider doing when I eventually move up in tank size! Thanks for the vid!
I did it!! My first DIY project for fish tanks!! Thanks UaruJoey!
Alright, I just made mine with lava rock! I'm cycling the filter getting ready for a little pearlscale goldy next week! I'm so stoked! No room left in my 30 gallon- I have a fantail and a black moor. If this does as well as I'm hoping maybe I won't even need to upgrade the filter! God bless you!
How well did this work for you?? I'm thinking of doing something similar
Much love from Ontario Joey! Love the Fruité container :')
I like this creativity for a fish tank. Thank you for sharing. :)
Filtration, cleanup crews (worms, plants, etc.), and substrate are more fun for me than the fish! So much fun making a healthy aquarium and pond!
I'm new to "K1", but this is excellent. What a cheap and very effective filtration alternative. Because the cost of name brand filter replacements is killing me. Can't wait to try this!
Instead of a normal sponge I'm considering using a giant sponge filter. That might be great for the base especially in a very messy tank it won't clog up as quickly perhaps? Great video indeed. I've been watching a few of yours and thank you for all you do and everything you learn turning it into a video is helping so many of us out here. 👍😊🥂
Did it and works and looks really nice!!! At first when i just install it it wasnt flowing like in the video but after the first day it was starting to flow, and after the second day it was flowing just like in the video, really nice piece, very creative Thanks
Just about to do this :) thanks for the great tip! I'll send a picture on the page when finished :D
I love DIY videos. Very cool idea. You were right about the eye sore, though not as bad as I imagined. I'm too picky about looks to construct one myself but great idea & nice video.
hey joe nice video im go to make this filter but I have a question wat do u recommend more k1 or biohome ultimate.
I have seen many versions of this filter and this seems the best one yet! I am currently waiting on my K1 media arriving. Cant wait to get this set up ")
ty its so easy... clear instruction... very nc video!!!! BRAVO
You are Amazing. Still working after 11 years.
Hey I tried using straws they work perfectly👍👍👍👍 gather about 20 straws...
Then put a rubber band around it...
Next cut the straws to whatever desired length then fill the bottle😀☺️
Also if you really want to see great results, I tried filling the straws with tiny pieces of sponge...
When using the filtered straws piece method you'll have to remove and clean the inside of your bottle more often but it work really great for your fish.
This work with any aquatic pet
+Keniesha Callender OMG THANK YOU!!
amazing!! thank you!
+Keniesha Callender can u send me a pic of that here . facebook.com/Riczwazowski pleasee i cant imagine the image of that . and i wanna try it so badly.
hi
Keni
hi i love what u do with your tanks and your thinking i just made the same 2 liter bottle filter for my 40 gallon tank but i have no media so can use straws to put in the bottle thanks pls reply.
just a tip if you have the skills you can cut the hole for your air line in a "pac-man" shape and the little triangle will work like a hook and your air lina will never get loose
Hi King of DIY, i have a 5-6" silver arowana in my 2x1x1 tank, he's all alone in there and i made a filtration just like what you did here in this video (bottle 16oz with ceramic rings). Just wanna ask for how long can my aro survive with this kind of filtration? (my aro is already here in my tank for almost 3weeks with the simple filtration) And i will move my aro into a bigger tank 6x2x2 when my aro reaches 12" to 14" and by that time i plan to make 2pcs of simple filtration in it one with ceramics rings and the other with k1 media is that ok? (bottle size both 1liter or 1.5liters) will these filtration be good enough for my aro? or do i still need to put another kind filtration system? which is i'm trying to avoid because of high electricity bill (25watt for a small filtration system from my LFS), coz air pump is way too cheaper regards with the electricity bill (only 3watt for my air pump)..
My filter burned out, I saw this video I had all the air pump, tubing etc. And I'm going to try this looks pretty awesome👌
Can I use activated carbon in place of the K1 media?
Yeah Uaru Joey!!! I doubt many people watch these older ones, but they are just as helpful as all other you tubers tutorials and joey just uses what ever he has, which I LOVE.
God bless you man! Amazing!
Hi how are you hope all is well can I find k1 media at peto if not can I use ceramic media or what ever you suggest awsome filter thank you so much.
Sure
If you liked this video, you will LOVE my book: thekingofdiy.com
Sometimes the K.I.S.S. way is the best, great video!
This is a very good filter. I love it!! Gotta try this! U rock urarujoey!!
This is absolutely amazing! I'm going to work on this ASAP.
Just a few questions though. I still consider myself a novice in the world of aquatics so naturally, I have no idea what the K1 media is or how it works. But my question is, would it matter how much of it you put in the bottle? Also would the size of an aquarium dictate the size of the bottle you should use?
Thanks!
I set one up myself and it works great also made the water skimmer
Thanks YET again Joey!! from a 43yearold on Oregon
just getting back into the hobby
and now ready to paint the back, build a few filters, And MAYBE even build a tank from some scrap glass offered to me for free.
Love the diy video!!
Thanks for the Very nice ,informative video. Just one question as i m new user of aquarium, where do the bacteria come from ? they come with K1 media itself or we have to add in it externally ?
very nice never to old learn something new and cheap thanks for the upload
Simply Great. Thumbs up!
Great video and awesome filtration idea
Thanks for the video

Excelent video, thank you!!!
I will build one.
Thanks for sharing mate!
I love it. Nice videos.
wow!! that's nice to watch. i think if suction cups aren't available you might get away with a coat hanger twisted with some pliers to keep it from drifting away and and weight tied to the bottle neck .
Wow, unbelievable to see how he grew up on youtube!
Joey great job. Thank you very much for sharing your smart idea. Keep up the good work. God bless and more power. . .
Thank you for easy solution this will help student hobbyiest in India who maintain the aquarium on a low budget. I will also try this
Great filter. The best DIY one I have seen.
Super!Bravo!👍🥰
thank you. I'm with this!
@ The King of DIY: Thanks for the idea. How do you get Maximum water flow rate in this setup (or in any other air driven filter) ? I tried this and I fond that only air bubbles are coming out at the top. I think we need filtered water flowing out from the top.
The air bubbles are also pulling the filtered water back out into the tank too
Dude it worked man! I had like 50% of the bottle full of the plastic media but now i took it out to about 40% and it works like a charm! Thanks dude sooo much!
@uarujoey All of the K1 is fluidizing nicely now! Thanks again.
thanks for the idea!
Dude! You are AWESOME!
Hi Uarujoey...This works great...just got mine up and going yesterday...it can also be used manually as a moving filter to suck up poo and what not. saves siponing time. I use charcoal on the bottom of the bottle and filter floss on the top of that to catch the goop. I live near B.C. Canada...Via Spokane Valley.
I would suggest using the drill and not a knife to poke the holes! We all have unhappy accidents!
I've had my new tank set up 45 days and the nitrates remain extremely high!
nice i have to try that thanks for the video
would this work for a 10 gallon tank
wow..this is so cool,im gonna try this to my aquarium... thanks...:-)
honey rios hi
@@rahulmeshram6663 sorry dude, flirting with a girl who commented a year before you commented by saying hi ain't gunna work
Hi there Joey. Love your videos and what you do, very informative stuff! One thing I want to run by you is that I had a moving bed filter in the same design as yours and it worked amazingly. The only problem was due to the light on my aquarium my k1 media turned green over time instead of the yellow / brownish colour they meant to go. Therefore should the k1 be protected from bright light or how else could this be avoided. Your help would be highly appreciated thanks. Paul
Good stuff!!! Thanks man!!!
Love your videos,thankssss
thanks for showing this.
love your videos. my question can you over filter a aqurium
Started from the bottom and we're here.
I’ve got myself a cheap 2nd hand 5gal tank and was going to use it as a grow out tank for a baby fish then maybe a planted tank for some micro fish and didn’t wanna spend ££££ on it. This looks so cheap and effective I love it
Finally it turned out so good
2019 and who watchin this?
✌
Me
what is he saying that sounds like K1?
is it K1 Coldness?
@@sherabdrolma4682 it"s call K1 Kaldness Media
Awesome tutorial.
thnks man i just made this and its perfect
oh wooow! i never tho this can be done for so cheap. and btw... looks awesome... Tnks!!! i'll try it!
nice..I want to try this
Great vid but does that amount of surface agitation not hamper you when running co2? thought that may allow it to escape quicker?
Awesome thanks!! I'm going to make one Hope it works.
very good idea
thx.

Awesome videos !!
Awesome Bro...thanks a ton for sharing...:)
This channel is so cool!!!
Hi There, You are Guru, Just today, I prepared the filter and it's working nice. Thanks for your ideas and Tricks.. Really helpful, I pray for your fishes long life! Thanks again...
I SHALL MAKE THIS SUPER COOL FILTER WHEN IM GOOD ENOUGH!!! Even though this is like my 2nd-3rd time watching this! And also you could hide it behind the decorations like plants or rocks! That's always nice = ) also it's been a long time watching the king of DIY so mind as well subbing coz I really like your channel!
Good job!!!
Yes I tried that over the reg box filter (hate sponge filters)but they are so tiny. I thought your idea with the bottle and sponge on bottom would be perfect. I have 2 of them going in the 10 gal tanks. I have an angelfish explosion happening - so looking for something that I can use for a while. I haven't seen the K1 stuff until just now - perhaps I should cycle some of that for next batch. Hoping these work - thanks for you reply.
I am a HUGE fan love the vidoes post more!!
Awesome,thank you.
awesome job man!
Thanks
Good idea!
This is also good for a planted aquarium, because it has no chemical media that will adsorb nutrients as well as metals that the plants use. Because i heard that plants do part of the filtering anyways. So that's a great filter, nice work.
