I just did a few years and he made a career of it, ending up a decorated combat veteran. Every time I see Cabal I think of those days at the arcade.

I’d totally forgotten about this title and played it way back and it all came flooding back.These kind of games were very enjoyable and I also remember the game Dynamite Duke that scrolled along with a character in the foreground and the awesome Wild Guns on the SNES.

The chibi style sprites of the Spectrum and Amstrad version were done intententially, having accurate sprites in the game would mean less on screen and would be harder to see. Ocean also did the same thing with their port of Midnight Resistance.
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries No worries, think Mighty Final Fight on the NES, the hardware can't really run an exact replica, so they go for a stylized version instead. I think it was a developer called Special FX who did these games for Ocean, Retro Gamer magazine did a great article on them once.

No trip to the arcade was complete without hearing the Cabal skull laughing at me while in demo mode, and it was usually when I was losing badly while playing another game.
It was the trackball that made this game so enjoyable in the arcade. Some games are made to be played with certain controllers. This is especially true with arcade games. This is the one game I was disappointed was not included in the Taito collections. It's a classic!

You have a fantastic documentary narrator voice. I have now the Pandora 5s hooked up to my big TV, and man oh man is it fun. Cabal is my favorite game at this moment.
I definitely remember playing the arcade port of Cabal with the trackball. For the home version I rented the Nes game at my local Blockbuster Video back in the day.
I love Cabal. It was one of the first arcade games I owned. My history with this type of gameplay started with Empire City 1931, and included Shoot Out, G.I. Joe and eventually would include Nam 1975.
This was a fantastic game. Again especially in two player. I loved the fact you could use some cover. The game was also well-converted especially for the Amiga computers
Destructible cover systems all the way back in the 80's. That's actually a huge feature in today's shooters to up the pressure on the player and make them think fast pick targets.
When The Punisher for the NES came out in 1990, it reminded me of this game. But in the Punisher, the screen isn't static and is instead scrolling left to right.
I remember cheating on this game because the basic gun shoots as fast as you can press the button so my button rubbing Technic made it like I'm using the MG power up all the way. Too bad the second game where you play a cowboy and indian can't let me do that.
I never saw this game with a joystick. That’s pure sacrilege....who in their right mind decided that it would play better without the trackball? I loved this game. I still Remember the day one of my local arcades got it. Great game!
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries quite welcome! I got in the habit of trying to find old arcade games I knew as a kid but couldn't recall the names. It spread to include looking for clones & such. I actually found Pirates when looking for a different game that is actually called Skull & Crossbones, but as I loved Cabal it intrigued me. I later found the others.
The Dick Tracy game for Megadrive was also inluenced by this game, it combined the mechanics seen here with a more traditional run and gun platformer. One button for jump, other to use the gun against enemies on the same plane as Dick and the other to shot enemies in background with the machine gun.
I don't see if it came up previously in the comments, but there's a game in a similar formula thats been released across the Wii, 3DS, and Switch called "Zombie Panic in Wonderland" where apparently... Alice, Dorothy, and Snow White shoot zombies, in Wonderland. I just tripped over a trailer for it today, and that made me nostalgic for Cabal, which lead me here. lol.
Excellent video, I like the first thumbnail of your intros, this might sound weird but it kinda reminds me the Venezuela's flag for some reason, the country I am from. (the yellow, blue and the red colours, plus the stars) lol, thumbs up for that.
I loved this game on the NES. I’m going to have to check out the arcade original. I was hoping you’d mention Wild Guns. Definitely a worthy successor. Wild Guns remains one of my favorite SNES games to this day.
I played Cabal every time we got to go to the PX while I was in basic training. I got really good at it. I'd usually be able to get really far on one coin and could finish it on less than a dollar.
Great game First played it on C64 then later Amiga And later on Mame....still play this game ( and blood brothers) quite often... Also if you like this genre...Taito's arcade game Dead Connection might be something wortwhile also!
Are you going to do an in-depth history of GAUNTLET? just to find out if the wizard really did eat the food. I always thought it was the elf he always looks auspicious. And GAUNTLET was the first 2d dungeon crawler.
For some reason I always thought Operation Wolf would be a prequel to Cabal since it appeared a year earlier. But I cannot find any evidence. I miss something like "The history of platformers" where Space Panic was probably the first, followed by Donkey Kong. My friend and I had this arcade cabinet in our house when we were 19, it was awesome. Got to the point where we could easily 1cc the game but it was a blast!
@@nemesis656 no idea, but probably ended up somewhere sad. I know he doesn't have it now. I dont think they came in dedicated cabinets, but I believe it was just a conversion kit.
My favorite game that cabal inspired was the gi joe arcade game. I remember being so blown away by the graphics the 1st time i saw it. I wonder why there were no home ports.

We had a Laundromat in my town that had this wonderful game when it came out, and it remained there until it got shutdown in 2010 I really miss that game. Oh well I can still MAME it, but it feels much better using the Trackball. :D
I have the NTSC version on Commodore 64. I noticed when I die and run out of lives the games freezes up for some reason so if I want to play it again I have to reload it. I played the pal version on Commodore 64 and thought it was way better.
Played it 2 player in the arcade on a joystick machine it was great. I also played the PC port, but in my memory it had two player mode. Am I wrong about that?
I always thought the ZX spectrum and the amstrad has some ugly grafix. I mean I understand the technology at the time wasn't very good. But damn those games like tiger electronic handheld games.
Spectrum was simply not lucky enough to conversion from Arcade system (without R-Type and Chase HQ), but it had its exclusive titles that looked great.
I wouldn't say the Amstrad had bad graphics. In fact the color palette was similar to the Master System as it used a similar graphics chip. The probem with the Amstrad was that there was way too many lazy DIRECT ZX Spectrum ports
I know. I wasn't shitting on the amstrad or zx spectrum. The Atari 2600 was much better. It's the technology of that day. But some of those games look like tiger electronics handheld games. Just saying.

I loved playing Cabal. I would recommend checking out the Rambo III arcade game by Taito and the GI Joe arcade game by Konami.
Both games that took a big influence from cabal
Gi joe the arcade game had a similar concept only the characters were always moving forward. Didn't even knew it existed until I got into Mame.

the G.I Joe arcade game took this concept to it's furthest possible ends by combining rail shooter elements.

The MS-DOS version was missing the two player mode. The Amiga and Atari ST versions had it though

Chase HQ is an amazing conversion for the system. There are lots of good games For the platform though

I always thought the ZX spectrum and the amstrad has some ugly grafix.
I mean I understand the technology at the time wasn't very good.
But damn those games like tiger electronic handheld games.

Spectrum was simply not lucky enough to conversion from Arcade system (without R-Type and Chase HQ), but it had its exclusive titles that looked great.
I wouldn't say the Amstrad had bad graphics. In fact the color palette was similar to the Master System as it used a similar graphics chip. The probem with the Amstrad was that there was way too many lazy DIRECT ZX Spectrum ports

To me, C64 resembles more Atari 2600 graphics. Low res, big ugly pixels, hideous colors and translucent sprites .
