Thats the reason we activate through naadi shodhan Pranayam, before that we do cleansing by putting ghee in nose and then doing kapalbhati and bhastrika. Large amounts of variability (that is to say, short inter-beat intervals during inhalation, long during exhalation) mean you have strong parasympathetic tone counteracting your sympathetic tone, a good thing.
