  • On the 15th of November 2018, John Allen Chau took a boat to North Sentinel Island expecting a peaceful welcome. He never made it back home. His bizarre plan was to convert the Sentinelese to Christianity, although as you'll come discover, they had no interest in being converted, and John Allen Chau's fate still isn't truly known.

Apart from the danger of visitors being killed, I've heard it's also for the protection of the natives themselves that the island is off limits. Being isolated for so long, it's expected that they don't have immunity to a lot of diseases that the rest of the world does. If a visitor were to unwittingly bring a communicable disease with him to the tribe, they could very well be wiped out.

Yup. I watched a documentary about tasmania once. The UK would send prisoners ect there....they brought things as such as the common cold, and it wiped a big part of the community. This, paired with the violence they imposed on the people, pretty much made it mass genocide.

There is a joke that seems similar to the John story.
There was going to be a big flood in small village, everyone was escaping, except one priest who sat silently on the church stairs. When people asked him why he's not going, he replied with "I trust God, He will spare me". Everyone just shruged and fled town. Several hours later a rescue boat appeared, swimmed to the priest who was now on the first floor of the church. The rescuers asked him to go with them but he replied with "I trust God, He will spare me". Rescuers tried to talk him out of it, but with no avail, so they went searching for other people. Several hours later the waters started to reach 3rd floor of the church, the rescuers swimmed again to the priest, asked him to go with them, but he again declined with "I trust God, He will spare me", so they went away. At night, the rescuers tried one more time, the water was so high the only visible thing around was the top of the church tower. Clinging to the cross at the top was the priest. Rescues swimmed to him, and begged him to come with them, because if he stay here, he will drown. The priest again declined with "I trust God, He will spare me". Rescuers swimmed away shaking thier heads. At midnight the priest fell asleep and fell into the water where he drown. At the heaven gates he asked St Peter "Why the God didn't spare me, I had all the trust in Him!" and St Peter replied "You moron, three times He sent the boat for you!"

I see many in the comment section not happy with him for trying to share the gosepl with the sentinelese people...
Let me put it this way.
You and 10 others are stranded in a desert. All of you'll are literally dying of thirst. Somehow you stumble across an oasis. After gulping the precious water what do you do?
Run back and tell your dying friends right? Or would you be selfish and never go and tell them?
And what if a friend thinks youre lying, wouldn't you attempt to drag him to the oasis even if it meant hurting his feelings??
That's what missionaries do. Christians believe they have found the creator of humans. He has a purpose for each human and died for every single human (including you). So if you believe in him and accept his free gift of salvation, you will spend eternity with him in heaven after death.
I found this amazing news not by my own goodness... Not at all. One of the early church founder "Paul" described himself add the 'chief of sinners'. So it is not by our own virtue that we found Gods grace. We stumbled upon it and experienced it for ourselves and thus want to share it with the world...
And ppl like this man and Jim Elliot are willing to even DIE just to share this good news. Not trying to spread a religion. These are not crazy people who are willing yo die just to add more followers to their religion. But they're doing it to share the good news of God, and salvation from sin that they have experienced themselves!

One thing vaguely mentioned by Sunny and often theorized by many specialists concerns the 1880 British expedition (when they had the brilliant idea of abducting the children and the couple). I, like many others, believe that this was a breaking point in establishing friendly and lasting contact with them. But why?
In addition to the whole incident of kidnapping kids (which is already very bad), they brought them back to the island apparently very sick. Just like the natives in the Americas during their first contact with the West, it was an epidemiological disaster. Unknown diseases, to which the natives had no antibodies, massively killed them. Unfortunately, the sentinel kids may have transmitted and created a huge epidemic on the island. I suppose that, for generations, the Sentinelese pass down the belief of a curse brought by strangers from outside the island. You can see them burying many of the outsiders' gifts as a reminder of the last time these gifts brought them diseases.
Even though the anthropologist in the 90s did manage to establish some form of contact with them, it was only possible because of the 20-25 years of regularly bringing them supplies. And even then, some of them threatened him.
Unfortunately, I think it is culturally accepted among them that the outside world is dangerous and that people will try to kill or hurt them...

The Sentinelese prefer isolation so much because they have observed that whenever the island made contact with an outsider for longer than a short encounter like with the anthropologist, disease ravaged their community (since they probably have no immunity to the diseases of the outside world). Such observations must've been carried down orally, each generation warning the next to not let an outsider stay, lest disease follow him and rip through their community.
And since the island is so small, even a handful of deaths is their equivalent of the Black Death. Thus, generation over generation this belief has only been reinforced: "do not let the unfamiliar man stay, for Death himself accompanies him."

The fact that he expected them to just accept him the VERY first time he met them despite knowing the stories about the North Sentinel people is just crazy. Him continuously trying to make peaceful contact after their obvious hostility is just stupid. I'm not Christian, so I apologize to Christians out there if I'm wrong, but I feel like if God wanted him to preach his words to them, he would make it so the North Sentinels would be willing to hear him out, not prevent him from dying after they tried to kill him. My theory is at that point, he has selfish motives and wanted to be considered one of the first people to make contact with them. Unlike the first person who peacefully made contact with them, John did not spend literal months or any long period of time trying to establish any kind of trust, immediately breaching THEIR island as a complete stranger they had no idea about. That's what makes me uncomfortable with this story. He did not learn from previous stories about North Sentinel and did not respect the North Sentinel people.

Never ever underestimate a bow. The Sentinelese have simple bows, but they are still highly effective. The bows are very large, and thus can launch arrows with incredible force. He shouldn’t have pushed his luck after somehow surviving the encounter twice, you know what they say "Third time’s the charm". On a serious note I feel like the Sentinelese people hate outsiders due to a group of them getting kidnapped decades ago by sailors, than after returning what’s left of the group because the elders died and the remaining survivors were kids. When they were returned they most likely told the rest of the tribe what happened and that experience was passed down to the new generation of the Sentinelese tribe to encourage them to keep outsiders off the island, it’s no wonder they were so aggressive to outsiders. There's a possibility that they thought his bible was a weapon. They'd never seen a book before. Either way, he was a threat to their very existence, and they knew that. The last of them that got captured succumbed to illnesses, and the children had tales of how the old couple died. When they were sent back to the tribe with gifts, they probably spread the illnesses ever further. That, we'll never know.

Imagine a story written from the perspective of someone from that island. Not of that incident in particular and not of their exact culture and traditions, since we know next to nothing of them. But just imagine a story in which your small tribe gets visited by some weird, highly advanced aliens every once in a while, but your aggressive tactics have kept the last tiny cradle of humanity save for the past hundreds of years.
Especially the fact that they have *iron tipped arrows* is so fascinating. That requires some relatively advanced technology, far above what you'd think a naked "primitive" tribe on some tiny island would have.

Hearing that his Bible saved him from an arrow to the chest, i'm astonished that John took this as a sign from God to carry on. To me that was a sign from God of "right, given you second wind, now run". I get he means well and wanted to connect the sentinelese to the world but researching the history of this island will tell you they don't want to be "saved". Shame he died but it cant be said the warning signs weren't bright red

5:35 as far as the tsunami goes, people on neighboring islands that share some common origins with the sentinelese people were also completely fine during the tsunami, and that's because they had oral traditions about a huge wave coming after the shoreline recedes, so they knew to go to higher ground. native peoples had a better warning system than most of indonesia.

Learn by past experience which is most likely happen in one time due to its place (like done by the natives) vs condoning ignorance (many tsunami sensors in Indonesia were stolen, and many cases like that where EWS equipment are either abandoned or stolen). That's why the natives has more wisdom regarding this one, even though most people would rather portray them as backwards and out-of-touch.
