I feel so terribly bad for those people who suffered this tragedy and died, I see them for who they are: my brothers and sisters. My condolences to their families. God bless you all :(
I remember waking up on boxing day and putting on the radio to listen to the music, and this was on. I couldn'r believe it. All those poor innocent people. My heart goes out to all those who lost friends and loved ones. And to those who lost their lives, rest in peace. God Bless
I was alive and living there when this happened. My grandparents hometown was attacked and destroyed by this. Fortunately they were with us. Still it was a sad day because we lost a lot of good and innocent people.
You have to remember that most of the countries hit were fairly poor, and didnt have any way of detecting them. I heard stories of a lot people who recognised the reciding waters, but cudn't outrun the waves. You can't really say you're an expert on tsunamis if you've never witnessed one in real life.
The last time Sri Lanka was hit by a tsunami was 1883, the year that krakatoa erupted. And that was recorded as an odd event. When the tsunami hit in 2006 most sri lankans had no idea abot tsunamis or monster waves of any kind.
I still got the notification. And no I don't remember making the comment. On the other hand, a tsunami could have its origin in Indonesia and impact land thousands of kilometers away. Just sayin
yes, this footage was all shot from the Bus Depot in Galle. i dont know exactly how many people died here where the footage was shot, but probably in the hundreds or thousands. Galle was one of the hardest hit areas in Sri Lanka by the waves.
Thank you so much for your kindness. Some people commenting like they are not human .I was victim .I am survived. It's 15 years already.Thank you for your Great humanity.
i'm a sri lankan and i was in sri lanka when this happened and i was nine years old lucky i was nowhere near the coast i was in the middle of sri lanka
I was exactly here few minutes before this. I saw everything as a child. Still shocking me and even today I feel like I shouldn’t be alive. And that was 19 years ago. I feel like it happened yesterday. Saw thousands and thousands of dead bodies on roads.
I was 18 when this happened. My friend and her family went on holidays to Hambanthota and 19 including her in their family died 😭 Horrible day for us, Sri Lankans.
I was only 1 years old at the time. We didn't live close to the coastline so we were safe. The thing was that nobody knew what a tsunami was back then. When someone says that the sea has flooded the land, everyone thought that it was just folklore. I remember my dad saying that our neighbor had come running out of his house and started screaming that the sea had flooded the land. Everyone thought that he was mad and had started laughing at him. Then when the TVs were turned on, and they realized the truth and how dangerous the ocean could be. The sea took more than 20,000 live that day from Sri Lanka alone.
I was 4 years old and we used to live only about 100 meters away from the coastline. The weeks that followed the tsunami was the most traumatic in my memories. Could see all the wreckage and all the mass graves for the dead bodies that were washed up the whole southern coastline looked like a war zone.
I was watching this vid on TV back then, and the part when the mum couldn't hold on to her children and 2 - 3 of them let go, it made me cry.. I was like holding my mum's arm tightly and hugged my brother and was like "No, no, I don't want to go now" :(:(
If there is one thing about this that is etched on my mind even now we are on the eve of the 20th Anniversary (I can't even believe it's been that long), it is seeing what appears to be a small group of Sri Lanka girls being devoured by a whirlpool. Their heads were just going around and around. It was such a heart-shredding tragedy.
It is Galle, Sri Lanka. I was in Sri Lanka when this was broadcasted on the very day it happened. These girls were going for tuition classes when the wave came in. The one that was dragged away by the way didn't make it. I'm not sure about the others.
as i know they survived. they were in a tv interview about that few yrs ago. all had survived. the one that was dragged away had clutched a Lord Buddha statue
Sri Lanka is way outside the ring of fire (which is ofcourse in the pacific) SL is in the middle of the indian ocean. distance to nerest volcano-4000+km. Look at a map the edge of the ring of fire is 100s of miles away from SL. And what sort of culture will remember some weird freak of nature as krakatoa which happened nearly 200 years ago. Records from Sri Lanka in 1883 show that the tsunami that hit sri lanka was more or less an abnormally big wave. Property damge was minimal.
Can't believe I was like one year old when this happened and almost died because my parents didn't leave the house when we were warned but thankfully God saved us ❤
I was 11 when this happened. This is my city. Still remeber the odour of dead bodies even after two weeks in to the tragedy. Claimed more than 40K lives in Sri Lanka alone. It was a horrible experience..
I understand you're point, but what i'm saying is that a lot of ppl spotted the tsunami and were still killed. What they really needed was a proper detection system.
it doesn't matter where u live. if nature strikes humans will fall. Sri Lanka is natural safe house. We don't have earthquakes, hurricanes, tornadoes. The tsunami was just bad luck. And we are recovering as a nation.

I agree with you - if watching for morbid reasons - but these amateur videos help scientists understand how tsunamis work and aid in better design to protect people from future catastrophic events -
these natural disaster could happen anywhere and to anyone. that's why there are sayings about living everyday as if there might not be a tomorrow. even though hard to incorporate, it's definitely relevant.
If the helicopter is not equipped with a rescue hoist, it's very difficult, if not impossible to get it low enough to just pick someone out of the water.
