You know a documentary is really good when the time passes by and you don't realize it. 44 minutes of fantastic journalism.
It’s only part 1/4. The rest are on Disney plus

“Maaf lahir batin” means, even if they desperately wished to help the people in the water, but their physical couldn’t defeat the tsunami. As Cut putri already said it, they can’t do anything.

So sorry for you😪 its just devastating to see this ....... 🙈😳
May all victims of this tragic nature disaster be blessed, if they are still alive or already changed the dimensions.........
I'm so sorry for your loss ❤
I got tears in my eyes when watching this. I am a local Thai. I live not too far from Khao Lak. I lost two friends there. A teacher and students, at a primary school near the beach, practiced traditional dance for a coming show on Monday were swept by tidal waves too. Thousands of people died in the disaster both local and tourists at Khao Lak. At that time I was a research student in Japan, and was on a holiday in Kyoto on that day. A hotel receptionist watching TV and told me that there was a tsunami in Thailand. At first, I was stunned by what happened. I couldn't believe there would be tsunami in the Indian Ocean or Southeast Asia. Two years later, I returned to my hometown, I could see the ruins of the villages, houses and hotels. A few years later, I traveled to Banda Aceh, Indonesia. The city had been recovered. New building were constructed. But I can feel the pain of the people there. According to Joint Evaluation of the International Response to the Indian Ocean Tsunami: Synthesis Report, 227,898 died in 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami. May their souls rest in peace.
So sorry for your loss!
I wish the whole world could see a documentary like this to help put life in perspective. We get caught up in so much nonsense. We fight way too much as a species. We are all the same and should treat each other so much better than we do.
I was having a profoundly awful day and needed to pull myself out of my misery so I watched this documentary. Very effective. Did it take away from what was going on in my life? No. Did it put things into perspective. It sure did.
I commented also, " perspective" how right you are. We should and must do better.
It's hard to believe this was almost 20 years ago.
It doesn't seem like that because it is so fresh in our hearts.
I can still remember it like yesterday and barely after 911.
Why? Time passes, it does not stand still.
I was only 1 year old about to experience my 2nd birthday when this happened.
So many tragic events in the early 2000s
For almost 20 years, this is my first time watching the most complete compilation of all the footages in chronological order, even in HD. And I'm fascinated by the way they keep the younger brother's interview and they put it in the end after the older brother tells us his struggle. Hats off to the team that making this doc.

As an Indonesian who is far away, I and others feel the same way, feeling sad and suffocating. I even cried again watching the incident in this video. But what is certain is that we and the international world are united in helping each other for humanity. May God protect us all.
Helping each other? Yes. Relying on a god to do it? No.
I was crying like baby, but the most I cried when Theo has been found. Those were happy tears. For me my sibilings are most important thing. Sibilings should always be your best friend.
I know ! It was a roller coaster of emotions I thought Theo was gone and then tears of joy ❤️
Before this tsunami, we Indonesian citizens did not know what a tsunami was (only a few) and what to do when facing this disaster. From this incident, it can be concluded that there is a lack of education about natural disasters even though our region is in a disaster-prone area.
I can't believe it's been 20 years since this tragedy.
May those souls get path to heaven.
I believe the whole world learnt what a tsunami was because of this event. So tragic.
I learned about Tsunamis from the cartoon The Mask back in 1997. Unfortunately, it featured nowhere in our school curriculum. It's just Terrible 😕😕😕
Well sadly Indonesia is right near a big fault line so it will happen again somewhere in that similar area
Mungkin dikarenakan dulu akses informasi tidak semudah sekarang, kenyataanya dekade 1900 sampe awal 2000 udah beberapa kali kejadian Tsunami, seperti di Banyuwangi, Flores, Biak.
@@daffaalnauval813 apalagi tsunami karena letusan krakatau
Many stories about 2004 tsunamis came from Thailand as it hit international tourist areas in Phuket, even though the hardest ones actually hit Indonesia, from the capital of Aceh province spreading through western Aceh, and killed 200 thousand people
Exactly this
That's right, Indonesia is the most affected
Because of the civil war. It was not allowed to leave the Island and also not coming in. Thats why western TV‘s cant show indonesia
Indonesia isn’t interesting yet at that time. Indonesia got only described as the “center point” but they decided to show Thailand so as a Californian, I got the news in 2005 and I thought it was happening in Thailand because the news said “Christmas in Thailand turned into devastating nightmare in the World History”!
Seeing the water levels before and after it hit that town is unreal.
All i wish is...All people please watch this video...im Malaysian, and we are the neighbouring country of our brother Indonesia and Thailand, its been 20 years and although we east Malaysian are clear from the Tsunamis impact but still the shivering feeling when i remember watching this news on tv and our state declare that mosques and other religious to perform their immediate prayers.....may the lost one, people and children that are "being saved" in this video by the rescuers in this video may go looking and find your rescuers and thank them....20 years has passed, young one had grown up, praise them who did endangered their life in rescuing...thank for this video NG...really appreciate it
Thankyou for your words, greetings from Indonesia
27:46 is absolutely gut wrenching of a scene
Came to comment the same thing. The way my stomach dropped

20 Years went by just like that! Time indeed flies and our existence in this universe is like a flash.......so short and insignificant.
yes... and ALSO each moment so significant
I’m emotionally crying while watching this,so hard for the survivors and the love ones who was perished😔
My Family is also survivors of March 11,2011 ,Miyagi Sendai earthquake and Tsunamis in Japan , we still experience lots of shaking and we always prays for GOD’s grace and protections everyday🙏🏼
Powerful. Tough to watch but a must see. Remember that day like it was yesterday. So sad.
Even after 20 years, it's still hurts to watch
I remember this very day all too well. I remember being with my family at a hotel in Malaysia. I was only 12 and had gone swimming with my cousins and when I came back to the room my parents eyes were glued to the TV. The news about this played for hours on end. I couldn't comprehend just how devastating it was back then, but watching just how monstrous the tsunami was at 32 years old makes me feel so, so grateful just how safe and sound I was with my family, hundreds of miles away from the tsunami. That said, I've always known how disastrous the 2004 tsunami and earthquake both were. This was so gut wrenching to watch. So, so, heartbreaking.
I live in West Java, Indonesia
This was a huge news then
Hundreds of thousands of people died
I can't stop my tears from falling
My condolences to all the people who lost their loved ones
May they all rest in peace
And to all the survivors
May you all be strengthened
My country Malaysia too was hit by the tsunami but only in the north-west coast. There were some casualties but seeing the huge destruction, massive deaths in Indonesia and the personal stories on tragedy and unexpected survival brought me to tears !

9:15 excellent explanation of how a tsunami forms and how it would appear to an onlooker. It’s just a massive wall of water that sweeps away anything in its path.
In the end brothers reunion and holding each other rest of their life heart just felt so calm
I cried again just as I did back in 2004. Great compilation of what exactly happened. Although 20 years may not seem the end for some survivors, I sincerely hope the authorities in that region learned from their mistakes.
This is heart wrenching. Im bawling my eyes out. Such an incredible documentary. Its a disaster many did not anticipate.
Starting at 32:40, the atmosphere becomes deeply emotional. This documentary truly captures the devastating impact of the tsunami, heart wrenching to see the loss and the struggles of the survivors. It’s a powerful reminder of the devastation caused by the tsunami and the enduring strength of the human spirit.

so heart wrenching...thanks for this video, i have a better understanding for the power of nature and the courage of human-being
The scary thing is after the tsunami the water will go rushing back to the ocean. So if you are not injured or killed when it hits you are not in the clear because many people are swept to sea when the water returns to the ocean and/or killed by all of the debris in the water on the way back.
What a fantastic documentary. I’m so touched by the personal stories. Young Louie and Theo surviving and being adopted by a good family is wonderful.
A day that is still fresh in most of us. tears rolling down to watch this documentary. Thank you
Myself and a few friends did three days of victim recovery at Wat Yan Yao, a temple near Khao Lak, Thailand. The sights, sounds and smells have never left me. Countless bodies from babies to elderly just kept arriving…incredibly sad beyond words
How do you forget something like that.
How did you do it? Just decided to hop in a plane and show up to help? Ir did you have to go through an organization?
This series is so extremely good! Salute to all that lost their lives to the EARTH's power and to those who went through this tragic event! And especially to the ones that captured this footage in the middle of complete chaos!!!!!! Tears throughout this entire series!!!!!!!!!
Thank you for this episode so people know what happened in Indonesia back then. It brought a tremendous change in Aceh.
An incredible documentary! It was deeply heart-wrenching yet uplifting, reminding us of the kindness that still exists in humanity ❤.

Trivia: During the December 26th earthquake, there was a marathon competition on that fateful morning in Banda Aceh. The video where stacks of speakers falling down in front of a cameraman? It was shot on the marathon's starting line, located at one of Banda Aceh's public parks.
I’ve been watching documentaries about earthquake and tsunamis lately. RIP to those who died on that day. ❤️🩹
Hats off to you, Nat Geo! Such an amazing documentary, you take us emotionally with these stories of survival, death, and hope.
32:30 what a moment, It was truly only God's intervention that made the baby survive 🥹
The Baiturrahman Grand Mosque in Banda Aceh is a symbol of resilience and hope after the devastating 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. Despite the catastrophic disaster, the mosque remained mostly intact while much of the surrounding area was destroyed. It became a refuge for many during the disaster, sheltering people from the surging waters. The mosque's robust construction helped it withstand the tsunami's impact, symbolizing strength and divine protection. Many locals and survivors consider its survival miraculous.
Many lives wasn't so lucky , many more still missing to this day , it was one of many important days in indonesia catastropic and devastating disaster in history 😢
When a disaster hits, you have no other choice but to unify. Let’s not wait for bad times to care for & help each other. Get rid of this individualist mindset. Instead of me, me, me, let’s try WE. ✌🏼
i was there in Phuket. i was only 16 at the moment. everyone was running for their life. the waves just keep pouring in and devoured everything. it was a very traumatic time.
i can still even remember it well.

The team in Hawaii waited 45 min after the earthquake hit, knowing a tsunami was underway, to start alerting the affected countries? Woww! That's super helpful.
They were only set up to cover one ocean. They forgot about that other ocean, lol.

Great documentary! But it was sad to see that India, the country with the third most number of lives lost (12,000 almost double that of Thailand) and devastation was completely ignored except a couple of scenes. Disaster and loss of human lives is not a competition but as someone from the region it felt very disrespectful to the people who lost their lives and who survived in the region..
I’m sorry for the lives lost in India, i still remember the horrible videos from there, but I believe this documentary focused on the events that happened right before and right after the tsunami within about an hour or so. They should make a part 2 of this documentary and maybe a part 3 to see how the people and places have recovered now.
I just watched all 4 episodes on disney hotstar last night. I feel sorry for those who lost the beloved ones.
So is there more episodes on this?
Is it by nat geo?
It’s still fresh in my mind. That day, 20 years ago -when I was 10, our class went to a beach. When we arrived at the beach the sea water seemed to recede and many fish were stranded on the beach. We were so happy and play volley ball almost in the mid of the sea (far from the beach). We didn’t know that was when tsunami hit Aceh. I heard the news right after we got back from the beach and I remember I got goosebumps all over my body and my knee got weak because I lived in an island nearby Aceh (but luckily our region was safe) and we were at the beach 😶 I can’t imagine the fear that Aceh people experienced back then.
Rest in peace to the beautiful souls we lost to Tsunami 🥀 May god always bless and protect all of us ♥️
I remember it so well, watching the coverage was just so sad. From the US, prayers for everyone who lost loved ones and I hope there's a better warning system now. 🙏🏼💔
So sad. My friend that I knew and met in California was living in Thailand when the Tsunami hit. He said he was lucky he was cheap because he lived in an apartment far enough away when it came through. He was on the 2nd floor and the water rushed through his apartment and he only had his shorts on and his wallet in his pocket.
He was/is a teacher and taught children how to speak English. So many children he knew and saw the day before were all gone. The days after were horrible as the days were hot and you can smell the many bodies that were decomposing in the rubbish. Some bodies were even in the trees.
Heartbreaking.💔
I watched all the episodes yesterday. I did cry watching it. I followed most of their survivors stories for the last 20 years and Iearn a lot about Tsunamis. RIP all those people left the world so soon that day and I hope the survivors of this tragedy are doing well.
bravo what an excellent docu! I was crying almost non-stop.
Always in my heart...
It happened 20 years ago but it's so devastating and heart breaking to watch it again today, rest in peace for all of the victims 😢😢
Wow! A great documentary to watch and pass onward! I have lived in earthquake prone coastal areas for much of my life and the number one lesson of the beach is: if the tide goes out when it ISNT SUPPOSED TO: run inland quickly! The earthquake may have been on the other side of the ocean and you didn't feel it. If the water goes out that far: move it double quick!
I'm so relieved this was on my recommended watchlist on Disney Plus. I just finished watching episode 1, and it got me so emotional already.
24:13 yaAllah, kalo aja ada yg dengar & bisa kasih peringatan 😭
The sheer power of nature is beyond imagination. Seeing the water levels before and after it hit that town is unreal.
This is heart wrenching. I remember my science teacher in high school (in 1984) describing how a tsunami pushes inland for miles and thought he was exaggerating. Only after seeing the footage of the tsunami, especially in Aceh, do I now believe it. This is really well composed and with focus on the human espect. Well done.
Its not about being a hero, its about revealing ones humanity. Humans naturally caring.
My eyes filled with tears, and I got countless goosebumps. It was truly traumatizing.
I have a story from a friend of mine who has a friend from Aceh. She said that the incident coincided with her friend birthday. Her friend survived even though he had to undergo surgery due to wounds caused by debris from the Tsunami. She told me that her friend was really traumatized by the incident to the point that she hated his own birthday.
I got to give the National Geographic 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 to do this. It mustve been hard.
I hope you all are fine. Sending out love to all the people affected.
History. With all its flaws at the end of the day is important.
Thank you National Geographic
When the waves are far into the ocean, it just looks so unassuming, but things change quick when they hit the land.
I've never felt so terrified, scared, heartbroken and sad at the same time in watching something. This made me realize how small we are compared to nature. We really should stop fighting each other and come together to be prepared with such catastrophes.
I was 14 years old when the news broke out. We were glued to the news all day and in the succeeding days. It was difficult to watch this then and it’s even more difficult now.
A very well documented and was so overwhelming that I didn't realize when the tears started flowing
How terrifying! I remember being 19 watching this on the news and, feeling so incredibly sad 😢😢😢
Nature can wreak havoc & be so destructive! 😢
