I always thought stuff like the drop zone and flame pit was more for show than supposed to be too damaging to the robots. The producers were damned if they did and damned if they didn't. If they made a robot for for aesthetics than damage they'd get criticised for making a weal robot of they made one that damaged too much they'd get criticsed for being ott leaving talented engineers like Rex Garrod and Roger plant to leave the series in disgust.
