i turn on the radio, pop music, beyonces and rhianas. . .them i get home, open itunes and listen to ommadawn. . .and I realize, I think i was born on the wrong generation .. these are the real pearls of MUSIC, orchestrated by Mike Oldfield when he was no older than 21, and still unbelievingly inspiring. An immortal masterpiece.
@@rafael16759 wow , wasn't expecting a reply on my 13y old comment. But interestingly, last night i saw a concert by Steve Vai. Some of his songs and guitar playing seem to have some of Mike's influence. But Vai's styles in indeed jazzier, blusier and metaller. That's what I have been listening to last week . Cheers !
@@roqueiii645 thanks for sharing. too bad he does not seem to be coming to Europe ... I've seen Vai live on his Inviolate tour and it was quite the experience - truly another generational icon
Absolutely I bought Tubular bells on its release purely for its cover (the days of record shops.)Took it home and stuck it on the turntable.I was reading Lord of the rings for the first time and had this playing on headphones. blew my socks off (revealing huge leathery hairy feet )
Ommadawn was something my mother and father played when I was about 2,3,4 years old. My father was a US Army officer stationed in Germany then. They split when I was 4. I have this released on CD. There is so much spiritual energy in this music and it is so important in my life. Thank you Mike Oldfield. I am pleased with my You Tube discovery here.
I have been communing, which is the only word I can justifiably use, with Mike Oldfield's work since I was 7 years old. 45 years later nothing, nothing has changed. You do not hear Mike's music, you feel it. However bad this world gets at times, I call on Mr Oldfield.
He is the epidome of musicians. Whether you are a classical, jazz or rock fan you can understand his genius. Not many musicians can become that "inside the music". As sad as is, Mike Oldfield seems to be lost amoung todays younger generation.
This man is a genius what you are listening to is power emotion and passion he has to be the most gifted musician the world as ever known I feel blessed I've discovered his music
El mejor musico del siglo xx y de este siglo ,el mejor multi instrumentalista de la historia, el mejor compositor artistico de musica instrumental del sigli xx y de este siglo
It's unbelievable that just 400k wanna see that piece of history Montreux has been (and will be) the kitchen for great stuff...I love it and are looking forward to come back Ommadawn is one of the thinks you hear and will never forget - I stand up for it.
A beautiful, inspiring, imaginative piece of music that takes the mind away from reality. I've loved this since the 70's and I'll love it until I am just a spirit in the sky.
I've always admired Oldfield's music from a compositional standpoint, now - after viewing this concert DVD multiple times - I admire him for his impressive skills as a guitarist.
one of the greatest musician/composers of our time as far as i am concerned you can liken him to brahms schubert and any other classical composer you can name this man is talent personified thank you mike for countless hours of beautifull music and long may it continue !
I discovered Ommadawn when I was fourtheen i 1975 and for me Mike es the best musician I had never met. kisses from Spain and I hope to assist the next concert.
+anarkrap Almost the same story here! I sincerely hope that you could see him in concert, maybe at the "Music of the Spheres" in Bilbao? Best wishes and greetings from Germany, so many fans in both our countries :-)
Nope, I had to be 4 years old because it was only released in 1975 and I was fresh on the earth in 1971. But it's just so wonderful and incredible and in 1992 I tried so hard to find it on CD and found it, like a gold miner striking it rich. I found the purest and most beautiful music ever ment to exist.
Mike Oldfield is the greatest and a very talented musician, get back in the game quickly we need more beautiful music from you,not the rubbish that exists in the charts today.
Loved Tubular Bells, always playing it alongside Hergest Ridge. Then this appeared. Even better, superb music and something I can listen too all day long. Beats the modern rubbish in my humble estimation, but there again I am much older and wiser now!
*Mike Oldfield*: --- Grandissimo e Poliedrico Musicista e Ottimo Polistrumentista; La Sua Musica si puo' inquadrare in un Ottimo Mix di Suoni e Liriche di Musica *Classica-Sinfonica-Progressive* con Sperimentazioni che spaziano tra Vari Generi con Venature accentuate di Musica Irlandese! What an exceptional mix ...that transcendent music together with simple accoustic guitar and defenitely irish female voices! Mike Oldfield was far ahead his time so it seems ...for today it's what calmes our stress away into ripples...
I think music of the spheres was more innovative and beautiful even, than some of his older work. (My apologies to the Tubular Bells purists here) It was absolutely brilliant. It was what you hear here with a classical orchestra. Not quite classical.. Not quite new age. Undefinable. Brilliant. I think it's as good as any of his older work.
well, i'm not a big follower of that kind od list, but now you mention it, and knowing he's not considered one of the best I agree with you guys. Mike is a really good guitarrist, and he has a sense of pace and rythym out of the line. He's a genius directing and orchesta with his guitar, and i'm sure not every good guitarrist could do such thing. I'm sure if he wore short jeans and a long hair, he would be in that list. Top 5
That's a big mystery to me aswell.. People always refer to "best guitarists" as the ones who jump around and play insane music rely fast instead of the realy genius guitarist. Mike oldfield is the greatest in my eyes:)
This man puts so many so-called musicians to shame , what a talented man (makes me sick!) not really thanks for posting whobearUK one of the greatest musicians/composers of my lifetime !
Because Mike Oldfield's 1973-1983 back catalogue no longer belongs to EMI/Virgin. You might find still remaining copies in some shops. It now belongs to Universal and was announced to be re-released by the end of 2009. Let's wait and see.
@mrfitness2008 I'm sorry that you have not yet truely found how marvelous this music is. You don't have to be on drugs to appreciate the beauty of this masterpiece. 34 people however so far enjoyed reading the comment and could relate to the comment so perhaps I'm not a crazy drug enduced youtube watcher like what you accuse of me. But I will be more cautious however in the future not to come across as such a "pot head."
@aussieangie He's a fantastic guitarist, worth a top 10 in that kind of list, but he's so much more than just a guitarist. He's a whole musical universe alone.
@Delticola Mike IOldfield has said that much of the music from his early career came from somewhere else, as if it was channeled through him. If you read his autobiography, he was an emotionally tortured being then, more so with his sudden worldwide success. The genius then had a lot to do with the deep pain he was feeling, and he later worked on himself and healed. But his later music never reached the same otherworldly genius...
i turn on the radio, pop music, beyonces and rhianas. . .them i get home, open itunes and listen to ommadawn. . .and I realize, I think i was born on the wrong generation .. these are the real pearls of MUSIC, orchestrated by Mike Oldfield when he was no older than 21, and still unbelievingly inspiring. This will never get old, like Mike. He is alive forever... hymns resonate...ears to hear, souls to discern, tones echoing life.
Beautiful version of my favorite Oldfield's piece.

Yes it is tough to imagine how music can get any better. I only wish there was more of this stuff.
Let them stand side by side this two very great musicians and componists:
Mike and Carlos. Everyone great in his way!
This is great! The fact that he has Maggie Riley singing too gives this version of Ommadawn a new kind of atmosphere :)
