    and Timkat Celebrations
    19th January 2011
    What is Timkat?
“Timkat or Timket (Ge'ez: ጥምቀት) is an Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church and Eritrea Orthodox Tewahedo Church celebration of Epiphany. It is celebrated on January 19th (or 20th in a leap year), corresponding to the 11th day of Terr in the Ge'ez calendar.
Timkat celebrates the baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan. This festival is best known for its ritual reenactment of baptism (similar to such reenactments performed by numerous Christian the Holy Land when they visit the Jordan).
UNESCO inscribed Timkat in 2019 on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.” (wikipedia)
In this video we see crowds gathering at the Queen of Sheba's Pool / Bath in Axum to swim in the reservoir and people taking part in traditional singing and dancing celebrating Timkat.
Also included are some scenes from around the Church of Our Lady Mary of Zion / Axum Tsion St. Mary, The Chapel of the Tablet (where the Ark of the Covenant is supposedly kept), and Axum University (which was under construction at the time). Finally, we can see the famous Aksumite stele / stelae or obelisks in the Stelae Park in Axum.
