Then a unit with these passed our Pods and offered to assist. We called them frogs. They saved us from our arms falling off lol. They more than did the trick. Tough little vehicles. 8 weapon emplacements successfully dug thanks to what we called a Frog.
A trick for installing heavy tires. Use a shovel. You put the tire up against the axle put the shovel under the edge then push down on the shovel handle to lift the tire. You can move the handle side to side to align the holes, or move the handle and rotate the tire to align the holes.
Got a license on one of these in 1991 during Heavy Equipment school while I was in the Marine Corps. Still have all the spec sheets on it in my filing cabinet
Dear Sir! Intressting watch that Mercedes Unimog is a work horse in your defens system! We have Unimogs for repair & service, every week. They still uses a lot by electric company for work in forest's etc after and winter storms and up to 3 meter snow! Best Regards Peter Eriksson Sweden Europe 😮😅😊

I spent 24 years in the Army from FT Stewart, GA FT, Bliss, TX and FT Hood, TX and I never saw this type of equipment operate the entire time I was in. I did however, see plenty of ACE's during rotations at FT Irwin, CA (NTC) and FT Polk, LA. As a former JAG officer I really didn't get out much except when I was enlisted the first 6 years as an MP

She was pissed! LOL! I told her it was buy 1 and get 1 free! She didn’t “buy” it! LOL…. She’s fine now, took a while! Thanks again C&C!
In the 80s the dutch airforce used them for setting up air defence units with 40l70 cannons and flycatcher radar unit. They had petprol engines and no power, lol. They had a diesel version as a offroad fire truck with extra large tires, double cab , 400 gallon watertank with high and low pressure pump. That thing was a riot! Grtz from holland
Wouldn't mind having one of those, but the front loader and backhoe would go away, and I'd add winches, front, sides and rear and a hydraulic boom with winch on the rear, to make an off-road wrecker. Probably add a welder and air compressor, as well.
Those trucks would be a great conversion to a mobile drilling rig. Replace the back hoe with drill rig, hydraulics already there. Great work. Kind Regards John from Aussie

Worked on them a lot in Army. Hated Rebuilding hydraulics, transmission and engine were a pain to get out and rebuild. But fun to operate like riding a see saw on roads
The backhoe is a Case 35 I believe. Same hoe as used on the Case 580 Super E. Many improvements over earlier version - longer wearing pins and bushings, better seals in cylinders, better routing of hoses through the swing tower, real strong geometry in the swing cylinders for sweeping dirt back into your trench. Probably wasn't spec'd on the military machines, but case made a mechanical bucket quick coupler that was really handy when changing hoe bucket sizes. Should fit on this machine too.
Thank you so much for showing how it works. Never seen them put the backhoe part in it's operating position. Very interesting looking roads speed backhoe. Mobility is what the Military wanted. To keep up with convoy. They sure would be a versal machine to have around. If a guy buys one from you. They know that you can service it for them. It had such a nice bunch of air hand tools that went with them.
Never seen a unimog before. it be great for out in the back bush .building a new home stead .a very nice unit.Any thing thats a military vehicle video .iam watching it. .ty for the vid
The first time I ever heard of a Unimog was a few weeks ago Heath on the RUclips channel "Red Poppy Ranch" showed one equipped with a snow plow. He talked about having one some day. He's currently trying to maintain 6 miles of dirt road with an F-250 Ford. I would like to see one of these on the Red Poppy Ranch. Maybe you could contact him and work out a deal with him.

When there was an active airbase near me in the UK before the 90s, the locals always got first dibs on old equipment before it was shipped of the island for auction. But only ever seen a unimog with a dump trailer, crew transport or a flatbed or as close to a flatbed as they can get
Very good job doing a good job checking everything out to make sure it works I’m not just trying to sell something not sure if it works very good God bless
Worked with Unimogs when Case began distributing them as the MB494 in 1975. Worked for the German manufacturer that used them as the carrier for commercial snow blowers.
we used to have backhoes mounted on International trucks that folded up like this vehicle. I believe it only had one lever for the folding rams in about the same position as this vehicle. It's good to see separate levers for folding and locking. True story, one of our older, larger employees was next to a building just a few inches from the wall. while digging the truck slid another few inches towards the wall and a water spigot landed directly on the folding lever. Not knowing what was happening and not being too agile it folded him up in the machine. He survived but it was the last day he worked in any field job. It's good to see some shielding around those folding and locking levers just to keep branches or other items from causing a mishap.
Love the videos Clint. You need your own lowboy and flat deck trailer with a nice Pete to Pull them both. Next Auctions keep this in mind. I am sure you paid a packet to move these vehicles.
In the south of Germany (Bavaria) and in Austria, these are very popular machines for forestry workers and communal services. Unfortunately, very high in price. The idea of this Unimog (UniversalMotorGerät) is to have a drive unit (tractor) for many different attachments. This goes from excavators to snow blowers and front loaders to generators and large water pumps. Everything was built very compact to achieve better off-road capability, unfortunately to the detriment of the boy who has to do the service. (Double crooked fingers and training as a surgeon helps 😂🤣).
@@waltervonoer9190 I agree the concept of them was good. The backhoe is from a Case 580 backhoe which is tried and true. The truck did move down the road at a decent clip which was part of the idea behind putting a backhoe on a truck. But unless you have 2 people working closely together it wasn't very good to dig with. You had to keep climbing off the back and move to the front in order to keep moving along digging. The front bucket worked ok in soft / loose material but other than that the standard transmission & clutch made using it hard. The truck kept stalling. We found on hills we had to have material in the front bucket. They were not very balanced even with the backhoe laying down and they were tippy side to side. In the Marines we only had the front bucket and backhoe as well as the hydraulic tools like the jackhammer and saw. They did work but tended to leak after prolonged use

Those german unimog have been used here in Europe as tractors on farms for many years. But also used as recovery trucks Because whit wide tires you could gået out in the fields and recover farm tractors .
Back in the 80s in an industrial park on border of Newport News and Hampton Va. I saw over 100 of these parked brand new. I don’t know details of why they were there . Ports of Norfolk and Portsmouth nearby .
I know in the Army, we called it a "C" truck. We bribed a soldier in Iraq to dig 2 trenches for 1 can of hot Pepsi, my first deployment. It was amazing what all you could trade, at the beginning of the war before all of logistics were set up. We acquired a humvee engine for a generator (alternator)
Where I am, backhoes are super expensive, and, I am dealing with two properties that are three hours minimum apart. Speed limit is only 50-80 kph.. so ... But tractors cannot be driven that far on road while this can. Plus, this is like the cost of a new pickup here.. back hoes are used by business people and a seventies case that needs repairs sells for more than three used pickups
Here are a few more names. Spot and Flipper. They had issues with rolling down hills for some reason. Still they were a blast to operate. Even when I was the Unit Armorer, at NTC I still drove the thing.
I have always wondered About any type of military vehicleThe mechanics of it and it amazes me it would keep somebody very busy and Lee I'm learning very much
Hey if your interested Black Dog makes an auto relay system that will turn the lights on and off with the ignition, so if the key is off then the lights are off if the key is on etc.
The Name says what it is : Universal, Motor Gerät (Maschine, technic) Produced by Mercedes since +-1950 Where a tank can go, unimog can go too. Armys all over the World, Exploration, desert, Expeditions use these reliable trucks
The 2 version of unimog we see is 90% with a Crane or a box fore personal lift. Best Regards Peter Eriksson Sweden Europe 😮😅😊! With a bucket maybee 8 a year! Normaly owner a small or medium big farm!😊
I worked at Aberdeen Proving Ground back in the 80s when they were testing these things, They tested a remote control version so that the operator could be safe and secure in a bunker while doing work in hazardous areas.
Its pretty stupid they're not in nz, they could be put to a lot of use i think. But probably not enough for mb to start selling them, and let me tell you, if you thought used ones were expensive...
I got the flattened exhaust and bent trailing arms on the suspension from the careless forking of the army. Spedo and hour meter both dont work so who knows what's on it, but the paint wasnt even worn off of the teeth on the earth equipment, so I assume it wasnt used since it was recapped. Like you said, idle time is the biggest problem.
The people who are loading the equipment have NO ownership so they don't care if they get damaged. This has been the history of the military. They don't own the equipment, they don't care. When I was in the Navy, I was in charge of the pump gang and I could have just scrapped the equipment and get new ones. I learned how to rebuild pump rotters rather than just trashing the rotters.
Best regards from Unimog's birthland Germany!

@@C_CEQUIPMENT Good to know on the fuel ... didn't see it captured in the Video ... still a good trick from the EU on adding a bit of "Gasoline" to Diesel (around 10% of known tank reading) ... in case you're ever trapped in the Alps without the "additive" ;) Bon chance mon ami ... from a Texan in the Riviera ;)
Those german unimog have been used here in Europe as tractors on farms for many years.
But also used as recovery trucks
Because whit wide tires you could gået out in the fields and recover farm tractors .
And they are used in the german army as well.
Back in the 80s in an industrial park on border of Newport News and Hampton Va. I saw over 100 of these parked brand new. I don’t know details of why they were there . Ports of Norfolk and Portsmouth nearby .
Interesting
I had a 580b they were a pretty good backhoe. Good video.
The 177 BDE is out of Statesboro Georgia not too far from FT Stewart. They have a reserve Engineers Brigade there hence 177BDE on the bumper
Great video Clint enjoyed watching this video 🇺🇲
Thanks
I know in the Army, we called it a "C" truck. We bribed a soldier in Iraq to dig 2 trenches for 1 can of hot Pepsi, my first deployment. It was amazing what all you could trade, at the beginning of the war before all of logistics were set up. We acquired a humvee engine for a generator (alternator)
Yep
SEE was the designation
Small emplacement excavator
I’ve always wanted one of things for around the farm and to use at my mobile home park. Really neat.
me too but the cost for one, and getting it past customs..lol..hate to ask what one would cost with all the junk for farming...haha
Just buy a used backhoe, 10x the machine these are and about 100x more reliable
@@nmdiesel89 I’ve got to backhoe’s already.
I sure would not buy one to make a living but it gets a 100 cool points!
Where I am, backhoes are super expensive, and, I am dealing with two properties that are three hours minimum apart. Speed limit is only 50-80 kph.. so ... But tractors cannot be driven that far on road while this can. Plus, this is like the cost of a new pickup here.. back hoes are used by business people and a seventies case that needs repairs sells for more than three used pickups
great video of some reincarnation ! love seeing this stuff coming back into service
Thanks
Here are a few more names. Spot and Flipper. They had issues with rolling down hills for some reason. Still they were a blast to operate. Even when I was the Unit Armorer, at NTC I still drove the thing.
45:42 yep. Sitting rots those hoses out worse than using ‘em.
I'VE ALWAYS LOVED THOSE UNIMOGS, SO DAMN MANY ATTACHMENTS, HARD TO BEAT THAT EGRNAB ENGINEERIN
looks like a fun place to work... usually.. you get some cool equipment in there
I have always wondered About any type of military vehicleThe mechanics of it and it amazes me it would keep somebody very busy and Lee I'm learning very much
Fantastic video I never saw one of those unique designs but only the best for our boys
Clint quite an operation, the uni mog seems like it could be very useful for limited applications! Thanks for sharing! Kevin
Thanks for watching
The military does have some pretty cool machines 👍😎🇺🇸 NY
Hey if your interested Black Dog makes an auto relay system that will turn the lights on and off with the ignition, so if the key is off then the lights are off if the key is on etc.
Great stuff. Best of luck moving them on!
Every garage needs a kev lol 😂 great video sad about the sound but these things happen. Just keep them coming.👍😉
New sub here I just found your channel and been binge watching
Thanks
GREAT show love the UNIMOG neat piece of iron
That thing is low hours cool! So I'm going to go now and find out what exactly a UNIMOG is as this is the first I've heard of it.
The Name says what it is :
Universal,
Motor
Gerät (Maschine, technic)
Produced by Mercedes since +-1950
Where a tank can go, unimog can go too.
DP can't see them Mrs DP might get one for herself and name it Mrs Lt Dan 🤔🤔😂😆😆😆. As always good luck and God Bless.
I worked at Aberdeen Proving Ground back in the 80s when they were testing these things, They tested a remote control version so that the operator could be safe and secure in a bunker while doing work in hazardous areas.
Never seen one in NZ so to me they very interesting so thanks for showing bro. Safe travels .
Thanks
