He is getting whang bar sounds even when he is NOT using the whang bar. How is this possible? At :52 seconds. I keep watching, and wonder if he is doing that with his thumb? Sounds like he is dropping the bar, but he is not touching it. He also is using the wah-wah in a very masterful way and getting the vibratos even on the highest notes clean and clear. Wow. No wonder Hendrix was impressed, seeing a performance like this. What a tragedy he was not around longer. When I first heard this solo coming home on the high school bus, I was amazed and went out and bought that Chicago Transit Authority album. On "Free Form Guitar" he really goes to town and shows what the Fender Stratocaster is capable of in all its raging beauty.

Love It 🎸 Old School
Chills and tears! Hope you all caught the documentary, "Last band on the Stage". Awesome!! What talent and what love!
I had the pleasure to see Chicago in Atlanta at the old Omni with floor seats in '75 and he played this exact kind of solo during 25 or 6 to 4 and he was phenomenal and has been phenomenaly missed since leaving us .
Terry Kath played like no one else.. and no one else could play like Terry Kath...
It's up there alright with just a guitar, amp and wah-wah pedal. One of the greats for sure.
Correction: The Greatest Guitar Solo By Terry Kath Ever Caught On Film.
Yea, that's right up there. Very unique.
"Terry Kath is the BEST Guitarist in the Universe!" 🏆🥇🎸🐐
- Jimi Hendrix
Saw him in concert at the end of 1977, just a few months before he died. Greatest guitar player ever. Just ask Hendrix. He said Terry is better than him. And he obviously is playing without even looking - his hair is covering his eyes!! LOL
I saw him at the Aladdin in Vegas 1977 also a few months before he died. So sad what a great loss. He was a Genius.
Terrible day we lost that guy! I still lose it when I see him remember in documentary, Chicago was never the same band!
Real guitar hero forgotten.
Wow! It's like watching Hendrix and SRV
@@Louis-x9u" Hendrix+ SRV"=Buddy Guy is having -or had- a few more Children . Buddy used to be so polite when he played with them. Hendrix wasn't a 'Blues' Guy. Buddy was just like a Fortune Teller for the Blues - He, B.B. & John Lee Hooker got together & actually made a pact- that whoever lived longest would make sure he would keep The Blues running. That's why any time you see a Buddy Show he's dropping names as he plays a Song by 'This is a little bit of _(Robert Johnson,eg):🎶, or 'Here's some Charlie Patton -🎶||🎶||', on & on to keep it Alive.
Make no mistake - In the '80s-early anyway, maybe before that, Santana was going to get on Stage & Play w/Buddy & his band at some Festival or something like that. Santana got on Stage & put on the Ibanez & Buddy hit him w/a flurry of Notes, rolling 1 string over another one to make that sound effect that comes from that (obviously). Santana took off his Guitar & WALKED OFF THE STAGE-There wasn't going to be any Santana & Buddy showdown/play around. This was told to me by a Puerto Rican Gent who was a Manager for Howlin' Wolf then Buddy & from that - I don't know what he did but it was told to me at either a Taj Show or an early Guy-Wells 'Review'-type Show & He went up to Santana said 'Carlos, que paso man? I thought you were going to Play together; what's up?' "It's Buddy - he's just so fkg good - I couldn't be on the same stage with him! He's THAT good!' Ie, Buddy let loose & Psyched Carlos off the Stage! Before they got going & they were FRIENDS!
He had nothing to gain from LIEING to me about that. I already thought more about Buddy than Santana's limits (though he's a great Player- I knew that!).
Look for "Lick This" Tutorial Series: Buddy Guy. I don't know if he lets loose on that one or not but he's sharing a few secrets w/whoever watches it. Clapton has said very much the same thing as Santana said. Buddy's polite & For The Blues; he's not getting off making people look embarrassed on Stage. Not anymore & not at 88. He's taken the reigns after Hooker and BB King passed away & Tours relentlessly in the least profitable Itinerary for making money to get the 🎼out there-it's not all in a row Touring City to City... It's what they schedule for him to do at the moment.
I haven't seen him make anyone jolt out of their seats yet since the end of the COVID BS. Why? He's doing slower tempo numbers: 'Skin Deep' & others that aren't like 'Stone Crazy' or others. I can't judge him; I'm just looking forward to September 7th in Rohnert Park at Graton Casino and Resort (I think it's called). But it's a month later in the year than last year [Aug 4th,23 at 87] & he's a year older [88], slower, doesn't seem to want to meet & greet unless it's a money maker. He (& Jr) used to sell Peppermint or Checkerboard Lounges Tees- 'gas money' in Denver at a crossroads on the Interstates: I-70 & I-25 for a two day layover & figure it out as they'd have 2 nights in Denver to play at one joint: I never knew WHY they weren't doing The Little Bear in Evergreen [THEE Spencer Davis, Bo Diddley, Commander Cody's LPA: B. Kirchen, Bruce Barlow, Billy Farlow, Audie deLane,.., & Sleepy Labeef, etc] &/or the Town of Boulder- one of the 10 most expensive Public Universities in the USA. That's where Hot Tuna reunited (& Idaho Springs the next night) in '86 after '79.
Buddy never used a Setlist btw- I've never seen one on Stage (DC, Dnvr⁵-⁶±, Ft Ldle, Redding, Rohnert Park, SF, ...
He was one of Hendrix's favorite guitarists and Hendrix called him, "the best guitarist in the universe".
One of the best uses of the Wah ever recorded. Mind is blown by Mr. Kath. 🎸
Heard chicago in my hs days. I knew the guitar was good but finally seeing this video, man, he was good
One of Jimi Hendrix favorite guitarist.
He was a miracle. A complete channeler.
no distortion, no tapping, no gimmicks
There is definitely some distortion on that guitar, and of course a wah wah pedal.
Damn right! Should’ve got the beginning tho too
Mind-blowing...🤯......WOW!
I can’t get enough of this.
Man that is stunningly insane!!
Terry was a Guitar extraordinaire...RIP 🎸🎶
I have been playing guitar and listening to rock solos over 50 years. 25 or 6 to 4 is my favorite guitar solo EVER! Terry Kath was a total bad ass!
Totally agree..i said this a long time ago...love Terry
This was the man Hendrix called his Idol 😎🎸
I just live when rock bands incorporate sax and trumpets
Crazy good. Did not know his name but the Guy blew me away..
As usual the keyboard player - organist is playing his little heart out, completely inaudible..
Terry Kath was the best guitarist I have ever heard, period, also an amazing vocalist that made Chicago!!!
“ a fool plays the blues like machine gun Kelly, five hundred notes to the bar.”
Big John Wallace.
Outstanding talent gone way too early.....but thanks for the memories.....Tanglewood is one of the best live concerts ever recorded!
Terry Kath played lead & rhythm guitar simultaneously while singing lead vocals
I like this comment! Terry's terrific rhythm playing is often overlooked, an integral part of the Chicago sound. As stated elsewhere, Chicago were never the same without him.
They were on that night find “I’m a man”from the same concert its where more cowbell came from.
Amazing, just amazing 👍👍 not much else to say.
In high school, I was in a band with some older kids. One guy used to tell me about terry Kath. How good He was. And how nobody gave him any credit. So I studied some chicago. Not only was that man of genius, but he was a true acrobat on guitar. Lost him way too soon.
Amazing!
Him and Mike Campbell are the most underrated brilliant guitarists of all time
Chicago is one of the best concerts I've been to see. Incredibly talented group. The members would change instrument during the show, highlighting their talent.
Kath was already gone by this time.
Free Form Guitar: One of the Greatest Guitar Songs Ever! RIP Mr. Kath
@46miles my understanding is that Terry did Free Form Guitar in one take. Think that came from Danny Seraphim.
Jimi Hendrix said Terry Kath was better than him (quote)
The CTA show at Tanglewood in 1970 was quite possibly the single greatest performance by a rock and roll band ever
@@spoonful1018 I concur
And yes, Folks, this was almost 50 years ago. Truly Amazing
His name was Terry Kath. He played guitar and sang for Chicago.
Wake up everybody Jimmy saw him at the whiskey and bowed down TK is in top ??? Thank god for Tanglewood video
Wow.....
I was probably 10 when I saw him live. I was mesmerized.
Words just get in the way trying to describe Terry Kath and his guitar prowess.
He was by far the best yet. Sad he had to go so young.
I like how the horn players just watch in amazement.
Thank GOD I was able to catch him in concert
Early Chicago was so amazing
100% he always sent it..................
If you cannot simply listen and KNOW this is greatness, then stop listening to music all together.
