    I love gymnastics from this era. The floor routines are much better and so is beam . All very elegant. How good was onodi!!

      Laura Gatehouse she is my favorite! The gymnasts from this period are so much more lean and not just muscle like now. I’m not criticizing weight but these girls seem WAY smaller.

    This is great, thanks for uploading. This is my favorite era in gymnastics. So much more beautiful and graceful back then...I get tired of the power gymnastics of today where so much is focused on difficulty. I'd rather see a less difficult routine performed perfectly than a harder one performed sloppily. This was so fun to watch, thanks again

      Heather Jay I agree. I hate how beam routines are so jerky now as gymnasts just pile in the elements. I find it boring.

      @@mindrolling24 I mean her split leaps/sissones never hit full split. Funny how she leads with her left leg in some skills/dance and right in others. But in any case I love Dudnik and would have given her a ten anyways because she was ahead of everyone else in originality, difficulty, and fluidity. I so wish she had done this dismount at worlds that year; she'd have won for sure.

      The leaps. It actually was a special requirement in this Code to perform a leap or jump with great amplitude. Dudnik absolutely did not fulfill this requirement--in my opinion. While most of the judges appear to have ignored it due to her difficulty both here and at Worlds, it's nice to see a couple did not.

    Silivaș coming back the day after such a heartbreaking loss (likely due to dismounting with a tuck double back compared to Boginskaya doing a full-in) to upgrade to a gloriously stuck piked full-in dismount is so heart-warming. I really don't agree with the tie in Stuttgart (I think Bogi should have won sole gold in FX Finals), but honestly I wouldn't have been mad if Silivaş had taken this Final over Boginskaya. I love a girl who takes notes and learns from her mistakes 👏

    That final full-in by Silivas was amazing. But you could see how much she was over doing that routine. In Seoul, she smiled throughout it. Here, she looked pissed off until that dismount.

    Wow, how Dudnik didn't get a 10 is beyond me. Potorac did a lovely job, but there's no comparison. Though obviously a routine like Dudnik's would never be as far ahead points wise under the 10 code as it ought to have. The coaches must have been fuming about her score though.

    • @christineharrelson4831
      @christineharrelson4831 7 лет назад +3

      Probably not since she won gold. Also, Dudnik was not scheduled to compete at this competition originally and she also stated that beam wasn't her strongest event, so both her and her coaches were pleasantly surprised to win gold.

    Monica Phelps sure likes the performances of the
    "Lean and linear" and the "young body". Poor Rueda was called "chunky" . What would she say of the older gymnasts of today? She'd probably think Simone Biles was "obese". Lol.

      Yes, very different body type than back then. That was the day of tiny skinny gymnasts. I was a tall, muscular gymnast, which the coaches didn't like because it was harder to spot me. Look at some really old gymnastics videos. Those women had what looked like just regular bodies, and they were much taller.

    Does anyone know it what month these Europeans took place? I know it was before the Worlds of that year, but many girls look so different, compared to the Worlds. If you only look at the hair of the Romanians, the Europeans must have taken place early in 1989, with the Worlds quite a few months later. Also, many gymnasts were still doing their '88 floor exercises at the '89 Europeans, and had new routines at the Worlds.

    They put a lot of emphasis on pointing toes, so I wonder what they would have thought about Simone Biles, who's feet don't point so much?

    • @MD-722
      @MD-722 4 года назад +1

      Biles? Most of today's gymnasts. The fact that even with an 8-inch coil sprung floor we still see flexed-footed double tucks is beyond me.

    • @rg1whiteywins598
      @rg1whiteywins598 4 года назад +1

      @@MD-722 I was looking at it a little different. Simone's feet don't point much. It's not lack of working on it, it's her physiology. The position of bones and ligaments. Gymnastics has changed a lot. Some rhythmic gymnasts poiñt feet so much it looks more like ballet. Just a thought.

    • @MD-722
      @MD-722 4 года назад +1

      @@rg1whiteywins598 I wasn't disagreeing with you, I was just saying Biles is one of a myriad of culprits who have been guilty of this for years!
      But with regards to Biles, where I do understand that she does not have a naturally pronounced arch and in-step, that's really not the issue. It's more so that like many others there are times where she just simply does not point her feet.
      Because regarding flat feet, even in ballet there flat-footed dancers who are en pointe. So there are techniques that can be employed to improve the aesthetics of anybody's toe-point and in gymnastics this is a common practice, even in MAG.
      But all that said, I don't have any particular issue with Biles', or any other flat-footed gymnast's toe-point. I just cannot stand it when they do not do so at all--which is the point I was making in my first response.

    • @rg1whiteywins598
      @rg1whiteywins598 4 года назад +1

      @@MD-722 I get your drift. It's the sloppiness, not the foot shape. Yes, effort to make things neat and completed is important.

    • @MD-722
      @MD-722 4 года назад +1

      @@rg1whiteywins598 Exactly! Gymnastics is a sport of nuance and is the finite details that can make the biggest difference.
      For example, the double layout. Even though it is of much greater difficulty than a double tuck and is often deducted for leg-separations and bent knees, it is seldom performed flexed feet; the same applies to the Pak salto.
      But in the case of the double-tuck, flexed feet are almost treated like it's the correct form and so that element is rarely performed without them, with Celine Van Gerner's from the 2018 European FX final and Qi Qi's from the 2019 World Championships team final being two of said rare examples.
      I personally think that the deduction for flexed feet should be increased. Whereby instead of it just being 0.1 for the whole skill, in a double salto it should be 0.1 for each rotation with a similar approach for twisting skills--0.1 for each revolution, but the deduction should be capped at 0.2 (so as to match the maximum deduction for saltos). That way we'd at least see more gymnasts attempting to point their feet rather than just _absoring_ the minimal penalty for it.
