I was homeless in Victoria. I was also psychotic with Schizoaffective Disorder. It's a difficult life lesson to learn when you realize that your presence and very fiber of being is looked at as an inconvenience by many. I was able to get help and worked my way out of poverty. This is not in any way possible for everyone, and I just hope that people keep their wits about them, and be safe when dealing with this. The people who you surround yourself with are paramount to your mental health. It's easy to latch onto anybody who's seemingly nice, but I will warn you, everyone has a dark side and many will take advantage. I can't imagine how tough it is for women especially and youths. Please keep reaching up and remain hopeful even though it may seem that there is no end. Miracles happen.

I'm a young woman. I lived there alone 5 years ago. Some of the kindest, generous and authentic people I've ever met still live there.
It's a HUGE step to get off the street because landlords don't want to rent to someone who's on the street! Damn near impossible to get housing. And the waitlist for social housing is years long.

@@bunnyboonot4uI live a few block away. The camp gets larger daily. 😮Too many people needing an affordable place to live. Addictions run rampant because there is not much hope. A few baddies infiltrate their way in, tarnishing the image of the rest. It's "not dangerous", in the sense that you'll survive if you bike through it, but it's actually extremely dangerous if you try and live there as a homeless person. Also, everyone who does these types of videos hides their camera or does it from the safety of a locked vehicle. Why? Because if you don't, it's DANGEROUS.

Remeber this next election cycle. "Safe supply" nonsense will not help anyone. Improved custody infrastructure, to include dedicated mental health units for provincial and federal facilities is the only way forward in my opinion. Once we get there, I'm sure new inovations can be looked at.

They take scarce resources away from those who truly can’t help themselves.
I think some tough love is in order for those who won’t help themselves.

    • @thenorthernwill
      @thenorthernwill Год назад +2

@johnclement1359 I've only had half a dozen incidents on Pandora. Most of the time it's been on store, government, view. If you spend any time in Victoria, you know the criminality occurring in here is obviously not isolated to "a block" of Pandora. To allude that it is, is either disingenuous or delusional.
As someone who pays taxes in the city, there should be no public space unavailable to me, aside from occasional planned events or something of the like. That includes my family. The bottom like is that the politicians, municipal, provincial and federal, don't care about the homeless population, and are now realizing that they don't have to care about any of the population, because everyone is so pacified that they don't need to win votes. "Why fix a problem of it isn't ours", essentially is their attitude.

I am sorry to say but when I moved to Victoria from Alberta in 1982 downtown was nothing like it is today. I was allowed to go with my brothers downtown and my brothers at the time were 4 and 2 and it was safe. Now today both of my brothers have young children of there own and it is different and they would not let there children downtown on the bus alone or stuff as it is not safe. I have heard people that are just walking downtown with there child in a stroller and coffee getting thrown on the child by a homeless person. These people choose this life. They come here to do drugs and stuff and they choose this life. Not many people that are in the tents want to get into housing. What the the city needs to do is people that come over to Victoria not to look for housing but to do drugs and live on the street need to be sent back and not allowed in BC anymore. We need to make this city safe and wonderful again for the tourists that come. Because of this we are not getting the money from the tourists that we did back before it turned like this. This needs to be taken down and the people that just came over here and are not from BC need to go back and be homeless in the city that they came from. I do not know why you say this is safe. NOT SAFE!! TAKE IT ALL DOWN!!

It be nice if they could spread the service across several medium size buildings spread across the city with employment and housing workers. Do assessment on people to see what housing best suits them . And or medical needs because police ambulance and hospitals are being over run with drug overdoses or mental healthy issues/crisis. They also need drug detox work farms for repeat offenders potatoes farms or the like. No open drug use and if they do complete shake down on druggies to see what quanity they have.

Mental health Canada is a pill dispenser- that’s it!
And that’s for people who are well enough to understand that they need a pill or two.
My sister who has paranoid schizophrenia lived in a Housing Complex in Kamloops that is managed under Mental Health BC. They evicted her for putting a camera over her apt door - after five years of living there, maintaining part time work ( often) and not a public nuisance at all.
She barely fends off homelessness yearly now - going from motel to motel. Job to job. Very high functioning mentally ill woman who cannot recognize she needs a pill to level her mind enough to get stable.
I have tried three times to get her BC Housing.
But her old story psychotic beliefs about me always rise up and she flees. My point being, if mental health can’t handle a very quiet, never touched a drug, alcohol, or booze, harmless schizophrenic under their roof - they are not working for the mentally ill.

Funny how everyone assumes they are all addicts. I live in Calgary and actually took food out to the ones around my apartment guess what? 50% are addicts so solve the assumption might solve the problem. Homelessness in Canada is not just addicts wow
Talk to them they don’t bite.
Sad to see all of BC like this now. But perhaps it was meant to humble the BC people as I never forget when BC laughed and said they deserved to die in the fort mac fire. BC needed these shocks to humble the attitude
Again talk to them I know your BC but one day you will have to talk to them try it now they are not rabid animals. Or take food and water and help them instead of filming to get likes off their pain.

Don't blame the landlords for the high rents it's very simple logic why they are so high. Would you want any of these drug addict's living in your nice rentals? I think not, that's why the rents are so high so none of these people can afford them and fail to pay rent monthly then destroy them at the landlords expense. I would do the same. These people chose the drug addict lifestyle so they can live with it, they can only blame themselves.

"so high so none of these people can afford them" homeless are too few for the rental market to price them out. Rental surge is a general trend that has nothing to do with homelessness, as mostly the middle class suffers as a consequence. Those people should be catered for by the local authorities, but are not. Typically capitalist and anti-social neglect!

Your logic is perplexing. That has no correlation to why rent is high. Are you actually serious with this theory of yours? Lol

Canada's only possible solution to Homelessness is to gather all the homeless people across Canada grouped in one place, for example, in Toronto or Vancouver Don't let them wander into every other location and stay on the sidewalks. If you see homeless people, dump them all in Toronto or anywhere with a good climate. There needs to be a place to accept those homeless people to be put and be allowed to live. Similarly, the garbage that has landfills to dump enough rubbish and segregate combustible from non-combustible waste so you can recycle usable items by type, likewise to people, cautiousness if the people are contagious, separate the bad from the good people and ordinary people. Separate the sheep from the goats. Matthew 25:31-46
