  • How To Handle Fast Balls In Tennis - Tennis Lesson
    How to handle fast balls in tennis? When we are in a normal rally situation, and suddenly our opponent hits the ball with more power, it can really throw off our timing. Being able to handle fast balls is one of the skills that all tennis players should work on.
    Why are fast balls so tough to handle?
    The main reason that players struggle with fast balls in tennis is the fact that they have less time.
    Time is a very precious commodity on the tennis court, and when your opponent hits with more power, they are taking time away from you.
    However, there are ways to create time for yourself and in this tennis lesson, coach Simon Konov of Top Tennis Training will help you deal with those fast balls.
    Big vs Small Swing
    On a normal rally ball, you'll have time for your normal forehand and backhand swing. When we're taking the ball on the rise or dealing with fast balls, you will have to shorten your backswing to adjust to having less time.
    When you have no time at all, you may use your return of serve swing. When you have a bit more time, a shortened version of your normal swing will do the trick.
    Balance
    It's important that we maintain good balance when dealing with fast balls, and it all starts with creating a low centre of gravity.

    Nice lesson, coach. I play with a big hitter and (eventually remember to) make these adjustments. One thing I notice about staying low and using a short backswing is that it doesn't really cost me any power. If I can make good contact on his hardest shot, I can redirect that force and end up taking away some of his time . If he hits a deep shot that skids near the baseline, I can send it back with interest by staying low and taking it off the rise!

    Hi Simon,
    Thank you so much for these great advice. How should I deal with balls that are powerful and bounce very high passing baseline?
    Seems stepping back a bit and wait for the ball to drop a bit more. Any other tips?

    Hi Simon, I play good in rally but unable to decide where to hit the ball in matches and win the point. Please make a video on match strategy. Thanku cotch.

    • @Eliath1984
      @Eliath1984 3 года назад +1

      if you have consistency I'd say your best bet in a match is familiarize yourself with High Percentage Shots and then wait till your opponent makes a mistake(out of position, short ball, out of rhythm shot) and that's where you probe that mistake.. you don't have to look to end the point in 1 shot if you don't feel comfortable doing so as you can win alot of points just by unforced errors. just know his strengths or learn them as fast as you can during the match.. if he's got an absolutely solid forehand try to keep the ball in play to his backhand.. make him beat you with his weakness. And let the match come to you. the openings will show themselves. As you get more experience you won't have to think about it. and even now if you spend TOO much time thinking about where to hit the ball you are gonna get in your own mind.

    Great video as always! Any advice for dealing with fast balls when hitting a one handed backhand? I find myself slicing more than I would like to…feels awkward to shorten the backswing and come over the top with the one hander especially when dealing with big serves…

      I practiced with some players better than me yesterday and couldn’t hit my backhand very well. Possible that I was waiting for the ball to bounce before setting up, so it could be that you’re setting up late

    • @elkness84
      @elkness84 3 года назад

      @@AS-rb5jz I think that’s the bulk of the issue, I think I don’t have time by the time a hard serve is hit, and I think a two hander would add more stability on the return, I guess I just need more practice against pace on the backhand side when using the one hander…

    • @AS-rb5jz

      @@elkness84 For me my return of serve is my worst thing, but I just watched a vid I think might help, it’s by intuitive tennis, so look up return of serve lesson with 4.5 player intuitive tennis. Haven’t hit since then, but I think the pointers could help. For the backhand I think I’m just setting up late, cuz a few days ago I hit alright with some players a little worse than me, but I struggled with getting set and hit a lot of slices against better players yesterday, I think it might be because im waiting for the ball to bounce before setting up

    You really should spend more time mentioning the footwork. This game at a high level is more about how we move our feet than what we do with our hands. When watching the pros, I like to study their feet the most.
