    Man, I appreciate how you clarified that icebreakers are typically extraverted activities. So true!

    • @chad.littlefield
      @chad.littlefield  Месяц назад

      Indeed! One of the most underutilized tools to make icebreakers more introvert friendly: productive silence. Explained here: ruclips.net/video/0bJFHAftJgY/видео.htmlsi=eC9omYlkAFyJaGjF

      Not considering half the population is totally unacceptable in our book. Can't be "inclusive" and forget about people who tend to recharge by being alone.

      It is such a golden gem. I'm on a bit of a secret mission to gentle eradicate the word "icebreaker" and replace it with Connection Before Content because I think it is so much more purposeful and meaningful. If done right at least...

    Wow! I used this in my first class for adult English as a second language. I asked the students halfway through "How did you feel and how do you feel now..." WOW! Universal answers of nervous and anxious yet it united the class and me because we all felt that way. THANK YOU SO MUCH!

    You just answered my question before I even asked it. I wanted to ask if icebreakers are supposed to be connected to the workshop topic and how to do so and Connect before Content is the answer! Connect to each other and to the purpose - thank you for this and for the examples you gave!

    • @chad.littlefield
      @chad.littlefield  Месяц назад

      Excellent!! And to be clear, the prompt/activity/question can be related, but not literally parallel. If you are teaching a welding class...a great icebreaker question would be, get into groups and make an exhaustive list of all the things that allowed you to get to class today that required welding. Creative connections to the topic are usually far more interesting that literal connections like: "What compelled you to learn how to weld?"
      Both can work, just the advanced level to know where to slide on the creativity scale 👍👍

    Hi Chad! How often do you recommend these icebreakers happen? Would it be okay to do them daily before the start of a meeting?

    • @chad.littlefield
      @chad.littlefield  3 года назад

      Wonderful questions. It depends on the purpose and intention for doing them. This method can be used frequently: ruclips.net/video/DCn3uX775T4/видео.html
      Being sure that teams are doing some connection before content at least on a weekly basis protects your team from burning out, creates communication shortcuts, maintains a foundation of psychological safety, etc. Only if the prompts you choose also connect to the purpose for your gathering. Ha, you're probably not alone. I almost failed public speaking in college because those babies are uncontrollable. (That is a true story.) The irony is that for the vast majority of folks, its something they value, find unique and compliment after a speaking/facilitation engagement. BUT...by being fully self expressed (in public) it is highly likely somebody won't like it. I still cast my vote toward authenticity.

    "connection before content" to replace such a powerful, clear and widely known concept of "icebreaker"? Uhmm ....

    • @chad.littlefield
      @chad.littlefield  3 года назад +3

      Only would suggest this if the word "ice breaker" gives people hives which-in the U.S.-is a high percentage of people actually. I would argue that "connection before content" is also a much more purposeful and intentional form of connection. Thanks for the perspective, Andrea. - Chad

    I have always hated these as they never seem to be anything i would care about. Your content first is the same. As for sentence completion I would not care to fill in any of the blanks. Pretty much anything that requires me to talk about myself is threatening. Also putting me on the spot to come up with something meaningful about a subject you have suppled is also a non-starter.

      @@chad.littlefield We have all staff meetings with about 150 in attendance. Ice breakers are used with the intent of us getting to know each other better. Most of these people i don't work with and these meetings are only twice a year. At best i can get to know a fact about the people sitting at my table. Because i won't see them again for at least 6 months but probably longer i never get to know them. . I have an anxiety disorder and not only do become sick when attempting to talk to a group i have a similar reaction to talking about myself. I would want to avoid any thing that included talking about myself or any part of my life.

    "Connection before content" is just another corporate BS line that we are already drowning with these days. Let's keep it real and in plain English -- ice breaker is fine.

    • @chad.littlefield
      @chad.littlefield  Год назад

      I'm going to fully disagree with you, mate. Say "icebreaker" to 1000 people in a company and roughly 40% of people will break out in hives. Especially because they tend to not be connected to the PURPOSE of the actual gathering. The entire core idea of "connection before content" is that it must connect with WHY everyone is there. This reduces hives down to 5-10% of the group haha. Can't please everyone... 😉

      @@chad.littlefield I hear what you're saying but these corporate expressions just cause eye rolls and we've all had enough of them. No one speaks English anymore in corporates -- horizons, lenses, synergies, rhythms, circle back, take it offline, low-hanging fruit, bandwidth, deep dive ... and on and on it goes. The latest is instead of just "get your ass back to the office", it's the "gather together" policy and setting up "guard rails". If someone said to me at the start of a meeting that we are about to embark on a "connection before content" exercise versus icebreaker, I would glaze over faster than a Krispy Kreme donut.

      @@scottd1342 now we're talking haha! We might be more on the same page than you think, Scott. You'd love the video on this site titled "If Proposals Were In Corporate Jargon" jargonfreefridays.com/
      It's interesting to hear your perspective on connection before content and it reminds me that there truly is no universal language. Words are indeed a tricky thing as "icebreaker" is jargon in and of itself in terms of the fact that it is actually a metaphor that is often not even true as sometimes...there is no ice. Or they end up creating ice even.

    • @scottd1342
      @scottd1342 Год назад

      @@chad.littlefield Yes, true that icebreaker is jargon too but I wouldn't class it as corporate jargon per se as it's been used for decades and is really part of normal English language as opposed to words like "synergies" and "close the loop". It's more like the word kleenex, windbreaker or popsicle.

    • @chad.littlefield
      @chad.littlefield  Год назад

      @@scottd1342 yes. Though the main difference between "popsicles" and "icebreakers" is that most people like popsicles, haha 🤣Did you see the Jargon Free Fridays site / video of the proposal in jargon above? Really worth the laugh if you dislike the word "synergy" as much as I do.
      I do still wonder...at what point is there enough departure in meaning to justify using more specific language. To use your example from earlier, "Get your ass back to the office" and "gather together" ... exact same meaning with just softened language. So, yes, annoying corporate BS. For me though, I can't say "I'm going to lead an icebreaker" because that is inaccurate. Also, in my final defense for "connect before content" ... it is an incredible basic, specific, and highly literal phrase that is practical a verb. It's not like vague meaningless words like "synergy". Connect before content doesn't leave much for interpretation or confusion.
      All that said, I wouldn't dream of thinking that I'm about to change your mind. Rarely works in a context like this. But I trust our conversation might open somebody else's. Thanks for being willing to think publicly with me, Scott.
