    What about checking the inrush amps? It could have been a weak breaker that was tripping way too low.

    Been there and done that, I've learned to manually push the contactor when I find an old system with traces of refrigerant leak to get an idea of the charge, that ussually gives up a bad compressor or capacitor too.

  • @JHACbiz
    @JHACbiz 7 месяцев назад +3

    That did seem to trip way too quick to be lock rotor...normally the compressor would attempt to start. But running the fan without the compressor proved there was no dead short upstream of the contactor so that means it's failing under load leading to either the compressor or the breaker/panel. I've seen it where the bus bar was burned up and the there was arcing under a decent load causing a dead short.

      He never took an Amp reading to see if it was over amping? As quickas that breaker was tripping it had dead short someplace it seems. I don't think it was LR

    • @jthonn
      @jthonn 7 месяцев назад

      @@MrJujubean That is possible, that wiring was cracked up. I think that the unit sat so long the compressor was stuck. Now this rarely works and kind of barbaric, but I have taken a block of wood and a hammer and give the compressor a good wack, and sometimes it would start. Then I would install a hard start capacitor on it. That unit was old and it wasn't worth all the risk. If you got it going and then discover a leak, then you are really screwed. He made the right choice.

    Check capacitor by checking amps and volts if cap is good you will read both if volts and no amps cap is open if amps but no volts cap is shorted this will trip breaker it happens to dual capacitors more often and that is probably why the 5microfarad side of the dual cap was not being used a capacitor can read good if the only thing checked is the microfarad reading but still be shorted internally.

    Why did you turn the tstat without cking the condenser first. Why did you replace the
    Contactor before cking presssure. You saw the oil. 18:48 there is a guage port on the dryer. You could use it and save a lot of trouble. A few simple cks can save a lot of time. If tripping the breaker go straight to the compressor terminals and check.

  • @jstephenrussell6443

    If the compressor has been sitting up for a long period of time it could be frozen which would cause it to trip the breaker. You may have to replace it. I would try a rubber mallet first and try get it to come lose, if not, then replace it. 😀
