  • From Season 5 of Walt Disney's Disneyland Anthology program we have Episode 16: The Peter Tchaikovsky Story which originally aired on January 30th, 1959. When work began on the Studio's animated feature Sleeping Beauty, it was decided to use the music of Peter Tchaikovsky (from the ballet of the same name). Researchers working on the film began to note several interesting facts about Tchaikovsky's life and decided to produce a show about this famous composer. Starring Grant Williams as Peter Tchaikovsky (adult), Rex Hill as Peter Tchaikovsky (child), Lilyan Chauvin as Fanny Durbach, Leon Askin as Anton Rubinstein, Narda Onyx as Desiree Artot, Galina Ulanova and the Corps de Ballet of The Bolshoi Theater.
Following the documentary, Walt Disney introduces the animated classic, Sleeping Beauty and invites the audience to pretend their leaving room is a theater complete with a wide screen to enjoy several scenes from the film. This portion of the program has been edited out for copyright concerns, but of course you can watch the entire film in full Technicolor on Disney+!

Oh, this is so interesting! I love how Walt introduced so many children (and parents!) to the classical music he loved and honored. He taught a generation of children to love history, music, art, and so much more. What a man! Thanks for sharing this, Brian!

The tunes from Sleeping Beauty here are also featured in the soundtrack of the Disney Feature. This was made to promote it.

by the way, there is also the full version of the Swan Lake movie existing (from which the snippets are put in).
It's interesting that they didn't include much about his life but the episode with Desiree Artot. Just to mention that the orignal name for the prince in Sleeping Beauty ballet is Desire....

I think that maybe you have Bach confused with Tchaikovsky.

What's the name of this song that Desiree Artot is singing in the concert here?

I’m sorry, I’m not familiar with the piece she is singing. It’s not of Tchaikovsky. In the next scene she is singing the Waltz melody from Tchaikovsky’s Serenade for Strings in C, op. 48. If I find out the aria in question I’ll post it!

He didn’t exactly fail, the lady in question was blackmailed in marrying one of her colleagues from the opera company that employed her.
