Or anyone who can take flamers.....or rapid fire weapons, few interceptor squads and a couple of aggressors would have torn straight through this paper army, but because tanks and big low shot but high damage vehicles are the meta right now no one brought anything to deal with over a 100+ wounds that each individually need to be killed off.
@@hawkshot867 This. Infantry spam isn't meta because it can be countered very easily by many factions that have easy access to a ton of infantry-killing firepower. Thing is, because no one is running infantry spam, no one is taking much of those anti-infantry options either, which means that infantry spam now suddenly works. It works because it runs counter to the meta, but if more people started doing it (thus making it a meta strategy) then people would adapt their lists and guard infantry spam would no longer work.

Old quote I remember about the Lasgun: A lasgun does diddly against an astartes ceramite power armor. But a full battalion of lasguns is a *lot* of diddly.
In lore there are space marines that make similar statements. One that I remember, and I am paraphrasing: "A single lasgun can be ignored, hundreds cannot be ignored, and lasguns come in the thousands." I like it when the lore plays out on the table top.
I think part of the reason your infantry list is doing a weird amount of damage is due to the fact that 1. Because primary is so focused on being in the centerline of the board your opponents couldn't afford to hide from your army very much, so they end up in rapid fire and bayonet range more than you'd expect, combined with the fact that your guys don't properly die due to feel no pains, number of bodies, and reinforcements, so over 5 turns your firepower doesn't diminish nearly as much as your opponent's firepower. But that's just like, my opinion man. What do you think?
Accurate assessment. This list is so anti-meta right now that it is the new meta. Big tanky characters are nothing compared to 20 unit squads with damage resistance. Huge action economy disparity.
It's correct. For every hordy army out there I saw not many are truly pushing it into the EXTREME like this one and just end up to be 4 blobly + whatever elite speedy thingy they can plop in. I usually ran my Guard full guardsmen too and when you can bring out 100+ guards into a 1000 points games you still cover the table from one side to the other without leaving any hole in the line and you can just UNLOAD when things reach you or you reach them, and the worst thing is that since your a massive homogenous blob of infantery you also DONT have any rear or black spot to speak off, you don't have any weak spot to slip through. You're just a 360 murderblender of Laser shot. And It really doesn't matter the number of wounds and armor save you got when there 200+ lasegun firing at you, YOU WILL DIE.

It's called math. These armies always do way better than you'd think. Saw a guy run a 2000 point game with nothing but 2 point cultists, and a single cultist leader with a power claw in each blob... The sheer weight of numbers was insane.
I know of a country that tries to do that with actual soldiers. They're not crushing it, but they're not moving backwards that fast either. They do have Elites and Flyers though.
1:00:00 THAT FUCKING HAPPENED TO ME! I had a Knight Castellan down to 1 Wound and had it charge into a squad of 5 Ad Mech. They overwatched, rolled one hit with their pistols, one wound, I failed the save, used a stratagem to reroll, FAILED AGAIN, AND FUCKING DIED!!! Because of the way VP’s worked, that one move lost me that game, and is why I came in 3rd in that tournament rather than 2nd (Ad Mech guy came in 2nd). Fucking hell…
I think the thing with Blast is that most armies, especially in this meta, aren't going to want to take Blast weapons in the _volume_ needed to really make a dent in a list like this. Same with like Flamers. Most armies won't take take enough to do the job, because they're either focused on big targets, or they're trying to take all comers. Few people will specifically gear themselves to combating hordes. At least, not unless hordes become the new meta, which I don't think will happen for a while yet.

I love the Guard novels. I can imagine a young man being conscripted into your Mordian army, told so many stories of armored charges lead by grizzled tank commanders and heavy artillery that shakes the mantle of a hundred alien worlds. Then he sees that there is only infantry
I’ve never played tabletop 40k (might do Kill Team since I don’t have enough time for anything else) but I always thought that if I did, I’d run the Guard. I just love the idea of regular dudes taking on the horrors of the galaxy with centuries-old equipment and good old-fashioned field artillery

It’s apparent you care for the love of the game and not just winning. You could have pulled a win, but instead you agreed to a tie. @inurokuwarz tanks are cheaper than mecs, a Davy Crocket is cheaper. They did alot of work to justify it. But only in the lore. The games omit everything.
I think the main mistake the dark angels players made was splitting their forces over all 3 objectives. With the volume of shots they have it would have been smarter to focus on 1 side and clear it then move out. Trying to hit everything at once leads to not wiping out anything.
I would love to see you run pure infantry guard at a torny again, but next time really go for it, tweak the list, get it humming, and practice practice practice. On a side note I have a 1000point game vs demons next week and I'm running 100 plus kreg infantry. You have inspired me.
This was a great battle report, very much enjoy your style of delivery and the fact you took the time to time stamp the video, but I must congratulate you on a mass guard infantry list that got stuff done, man after me own heart, found this by seeing if anyone on RUclips was doing silly mass infantry lists as I took a meme tier Necron list to a friends small game day that had 120 warriors, 20 immortals, illiminor Szeras and a reanimator plus two plasmancers to go with the immortals, didn't get a podium place like but was amazed how well it did as I was expecting to get tabled every game but ended up with two wins due to the sheer volume of fire I had.
It is a known to GMs: If you want to make people feel badass send one, big, scary thing at them. If you actually want to fug them up, send 200 small things at them. Swarms of things baby. Swarms of humans, scarabs, termagants - swarm what you got.
I used to do this back in 4th, with the airborne doctrine. Nothing deploys, 200 guys deepstriking in the age of scatter It is amazing how lethal lasguns can be in 10th. (+1 shots, lethal hits on 5, plus 1 to hit)
May n3ed to switch from necrons to guard. I was doing necrons cus I like the revival infantry push but seems guard can do that without worrying about wasting points on a lot if different units to do so

Christmas guard box is gonna sell out fast with this hype! In my death guard army i get really bored painting power armour, the most fun i have is with cultists, thinking that good transfer over to good results painting imperial guard.
Not a huge 40k guy anymore but use to play a lot, even tournaments(more a old fantasy player) but really liked watching this. Reminded me of my days running huge ork dakka lines. - All your opponents seemed like really good folks. Like your chaos knight opponent being such a good chap about the 1 wound combat. I’ve seen all sides of reactions from stuff like this. Sometimes In warhammer/dice games crazy stuff like that just happens and you gotta just take it for what it is and have a good laugh, and try to give some hilarious context to what just transpired.
I haven't ever played a game of Warhammer. I bought a Kill Team back in 2020, painted most of them, but never actually played a game. I've barely even watched anything Warhammer related in years. This was still absolutely awesome to watch, even though I barely even remember 9th Ed rules and we're onto 10th now, as it totally fulfilled the Ast Mil fantasy of throwing endless bodies against invincible enemies and still winning LONG LIVE THE GUARD
I started playing 10th with Custodes, and they have nerfed the big blobs of spear Guard to stop Custodes horde. I just finished a Imperial knight army and going to add some Krieg units as they are so cool. BUT I love your guard army, I used to use Tallern back in the early days and will always have a soft spot for pure guard. Great battle report and well done. Maybe I might work on a sisters of silence model.

Glad your continuing to have a good time of it. Really is a pity the overall quality of terrain seems to be going down over the years. I understand the cost is an issue as is the time needed to get multiple tables ready plus ofcourse this is a game an abstraction for war dollies to be pushed around on. But IMHO having well designed, painted thematic tables make the whole event better and that helps onboard new player's as they see how visually appealing it is. Even more so if people are having a great time to boot. 👌
I reckon an improvement on this list is... Drop the commissar Put the castellan and command squad in a 20 man Infantry Squad. With Drill commander. That's 3 auto cannons and 2 grenade launchers auto wounding AND sustained hits on 5+. A very punchy fire support unit.
A lot of people get twisted up making lists when they see their big HQ or elite squad, or did in my editions, and forget that just outnumbering people to a point of you won't have enough shots to kill all of them can win games far more than I have a ultimate unit, well ultimate unit here's 5 handfuls of dice, have fun.
I think you dont need to convince me, been having alot of succes with a heavy infantry chaos Spacemarine force, although i do have 1 Defiler in it. Its Nurgle, so its pretty save.
This is like that 3d animation video of the space marines breaching a spaceship and running through the corridor and massacring everyone as they cut through layers on layers of defenses, but instead the infantrymen eventually wear them down and win.
True grunt armies have always been way stickier than folks want to admit. From 4th-8th I ran a mass gribbly Tyranid list and drone/firewarrior Tau list. The only 2 lists that could really deal with either consistently were Dark Eldar and infantry heavy guard. They were the only lists that had the shear number of dice rolls needed to clear units reliably.
What if for "pure,, infrantry I just take 1 or 2 scouts (armored or not) for holding the objectives and all thoes 200+ models into battle?It eill be pure infrantry in battle , but scouts for objective and have points
Despite no tanks, this has to be the most “guard” guardsmen list you could make. Imperium solving most of its problems by flooding the enemy with bodies til they drop. XD
If you’ve ever looked into the Wolves, just check out their Bloodclaws, their Long Fangs and Wolf Guard, Bloodclaws can be in 15 man blobs before including the leader in 10th
Haven't done a tournament but I am undefeated in my various LGS using full 1k/2k guard lists. Closest has been turn 4 time out, 46 to 59. Pretty much every other game has been a full tabling by turn 4 at the latest, and almost double pts each time. Guard are definitely sleeper top tier, just more guard players need to tool their lists better and be able to get the units they need. As a note, a Guard vs Infantry Guard list: A double Psyker Chimera would be able to do a good munch to a 20man squad by itself. 210 pts. i asked this the last time of you mr Mordian, but how in the Emperors name do you manage to play that many infantry in a tournament game. Just 1 turn for me with that many infantry is like 1 hour ^^. But congrats sir! well done!
I have always enjoyed playing pure infantry guard, Makes their bigger guns the same as their smaller guns. It works well with guard vs most other armies because of the capabilities of every guard squad. Melta/flamer squad can at least try to deal with any kind of threat. I have liked the grenade launcher since 3rd. but I really like it in 10th

I think it's more that it's counter-meta. If the meta is heavy infantry and tanks, it makes sense infantry would thrive as an oversight.

These are the best tourney reports out there. Mordian doesn’t just tell the result of each battle, he tells the STORY of each battle. Big distinction.

In my death guard army i get really bored painting power armour, the most fun i have is with cultists, thinking that good transfer over to good results painting imperial guard.
Not a huge 40k guy anymore but use to play a lot, even tournaments(more a old fantasy player) but really liked watching this.
Reminded me of my days running huge ork dakka lines.

All your opponents seemed like really good folks. Like your chaos knight opponent being such a good chap about the 1 wound combat. I’ve seen all sides of reactions from stuff like this. Sometimes In warhammer/dice games crazy stuff like that just happens and you gotta just take it for what it is and have a good laugh, and try to give some hilarious context to what just transpired.
I haven't ever played a game of Warhammer. I bought a Kill Team back in 2020, painted most of them, but never actually played a game. I've barely even watched anything Warhammer related in years. This was still absolutely awesome to watch, even though I barely even remember 9th Ed rules and we're onto 10th now, as it totally fulfilled the Ast Mil fantasy of throwing endless bodies against invincible enemies and still winning

I started playing 10th with Custodes, and they have nerfed the big blobs of spear Guard to stop Custodes horde.
I just finished a Imperial knight army and going to add some Krieg units as they are so cool.
BUT I love your guard army, I used to use Tallern back in the early days and will always have a soft spot for pure guard.

Really is a pity the overall quality of terrain seems to be going down over the years.
I understand the cost is an issue as is the time needed to get multiple tables ready plus ofcourse this is a game an abstraction for war dollies to be pushed around on.
But IMHO having well designed, painted thematic tables make the whole event better and that helps onboard new player's as they see how visually appealing it is. Even more so if people are having a great time to boot. 👌

Drop the commissar
Put the castellan and command squad in a 20 man Infantry Squad. With Drill commander.
That's 3 auto cannons and 2 grenade launchers auto wounding AND sustained hits on 5+.
A very punchy fire support unit.
This goes to my repeated point. 10th is fun. Most people online complaining haven't rolled dice.
Never underestimate the power of numbers. The more dice you roll, the more 5s and 6s you'll roll.
A lot of people get twisted up making lists when they see their big HQ or elite squad, or did in my editions, and forget that just outnumbering people to a point of you won't have enough shots to kill all of them can win games far more than I have a ultimate unit, well ultimate unit here's 5 handfuls of dice, have fun.

I think you dont need to convince me, been having alot of succes with a heavy infantry chaos Spacemarine force, although i do have 1 Defiler in it. Its Nurgle, so its pretty save.

This is like that 3d animation video of the space marines breaching a spaceship and running through the corridor and massacring everyone as they cut through layers on layers of defenses, but instead the infantrymen eventually wear them down and win.
Quantity has a quality all its own.

I know Necron warrior hordes used to be a thing. Don't know if this indicates anything on that front.
True grunt armies have always been way stickier than folks want to admit. From 4th-8th I ran a mass gribbly Tyranid list and drone/firewarrior Tau list. The only 2 lists that could really deal with either consistently were Dark Eldar and infantry heavy guard. They were the only lists that had the shear number of dice rolls needed to clear units reliably.
What if for "pure,, infrantry I just take 1 or 2 scouts (armored or not) for holding the objectives and all thoes 200+ models into battle?It eill be pure infrantry in battle , but scouts for objective and have points
Despite no tanks, this has to be the most “guard” guardsmen list you could make. Imperium solving most of its problems by flooding the enemy with bodies til they drop. XD

As a pure Krieg player, I respect the 100 Krieg soldiers. If you're gonna trade wounds with the enemy, there's no one more willing!

If you’ve ever looked into the Wolves, just check out their Bloodclaws, their Long Fangs and Wolf Guard, Bloodclaws can be in 15 man blobs before including the leader in 10th
Haven't done a tournament but I am undefeated in my various LGS using full 1k/2k guard lists. Closest has been turn 4 time out, 46 to 59. Pretty much every other game has been a full tabling by turn 4 at the latest, and almost double pts each time.
Guard are definitely sleeper top tier, just more guard players need to tool their lists better and be able to get the units they need.
As a note, a Guard vs Infantry Guard list:
A double Psyker Chimera would be able to do a good munch to a 20man squad by itself. 210 pts. Blast (4) and overcharge, gives minimum 14 shots, plus 2D6 giving average 20 shots, hitting on +3 (Take Aim +2), wounding on +2, AP -3. Only 1 damage though, but still pretty good though.
i asked this the last time of you mr Mordian, but how in the Emperors name do you manage to play that many infantry in a tournament game. Just 1 turn for me with that many infantry is like 1 hour ^^. But congrats sir! well done!

Throwing wave upon wave of infantry at the enemy. Truly this was in the finest traditions of the Imperial Guard!
I have always enjoyed playing pure infantry guard, Makes their bigger guns the same as their smaller guns.
It works well with guard vs most other armies because of the capabilities of every guard squad. Melta/flamer squad can at least try to deal with any kind of threat. I have liked the grenade launcher since 3rd. but I really like it in 10th
Im just starting Warhammer, and i purchased a krieg kill team. I personally love them above all other factions, so i was just wondering if this would work.

I have never played 40k, never watched 40k, but everything about me suggests I would. All my friends do, I play MESBG and Old World (When it comes out!), I play Star Wars Legion. And though the metamorphosis, I have heard all the different memes about 40k however. So when I saw this pop up on my recommended on RUclips, I had to watch it. For the memes.
