Really well done review, I absolutely appreciated seeing it from a third person perspective and loved how visible the light was in the daytime. This pretty much confirms I need to get one of these.
Drop me a comment if you have any questions on the Fly6. I've been using this every ride over the past month so i'll give you honest feedback based on my experience.
I can't read license plates from my video footage when riding or standing still, its just too blurry. will a better memory card solve the problem? also how do i change the date?
Nice review. I have been using Designshine DS-500 tail light which goes up to 500 lumens at its brightest. It is visible for a mile or more in the daytime given enough of a line of sight. So I have a real problem with the thought of giving that up in exchange for a 30 lumen rear tail light with a camera. If not for that, Fly6 would be a no brainer.
Yep, good point. I have the Fly12 on the front with something like 400 Lumens, which is plenty bright. I would be curious to hear your thoughts on if 500 lumens on the back is distracting to approaching drivers?
At the highest flash setting (or even the second to highest) its definitely a distraction. It has several flash and solid settings. The Design shine is, in that sense, over engineered in my opinion. But I only use one of two of the lower flash settings which, while still visible at a long distance even in daylight, I have found to be helpful. The higher of those two I use sparingly. At those settings, I find it does the job of enhancing my visibility day or night without annoying drivers.
zawam, I like both products. The thing i like a about the fly6 is that it is alway on and recording, and it can loop record footage once you fill up the sd card. Plus the addition of the light is key for safety. Very nice to have both camera and light in one product in my opinion.
ryuichiyu, that took some creative engineering. i can't believe you noticed. Basically i cut a small piece of PVC tube and covered w/ black electrical tape and ziptied to the back of my seatbag. On the pvc tube i mounted a garmin 1/4 turn mount with the typical rubber bands. Works great and well concealed. The Garmin Radar is my "must have" over the fly6 that i just don't leave home without.
Christopher Sucipto Huang ...for me i never leave home without the Varia. really nice having an audible beep when a car is approaching from behind. i ride on mostly suburban and rural roads. in a dense city the beeps would be too frequent , and you would be likely to tune them out.
Can you transfer any or all of the files to a smart phone on the spot or do you need to go home to a PC ? Can you connect a smart phone as a monitor as your shooting ?
Hi Miles Moore, yes by default the Fly6 records in 5 min chunks, so you can review on your smartphone using their free app. You can use the app to download any of the files to your phone or trim down to just the 20 seconds that you need to share. As far as real time monitoring from you smartphone, fairly certain this is not supported. App can only be used to review footage afterward.
well, gopro is not really an alternative. I have read that Fly6 does not like much water, so it is not really waterproof. I miss two features - complete waterproof and external battery connection which must be waterproof too. Something what virb xe delivers. virb xe is not an alternative either, coz of its price.
Hi +Jeff Greene, i have a fly 6, but instead of circular light recording when i turn it on it just flashes, its fully charged and card is formatted, but there is no info in my file manager, when i click on fly 6 any ideas
Phil John hi i just tested this on my unit. I get the same result if i turn on the unit without an sd card. My guess is that your sd card is bad and needs to be replaced.
I have this exact same model and package. I can't read license plates from my videos even on smooth or standing still. Im using the original memory card. Will a new memory card improve video quality? I never new 720p would look so bad, there must be more to video quality than 720p like speed and so on. I guess we can't assume if its 720p its good video quality.
Luciano Serafino i don't think any memory card should have issues recording from a 720p camera( i would not buy a new card). I don't think the fly6 is intended for license plate quality unless standing still. However the quality is good enough to provide evidence of the situation and surroundings.
With my gen1 Fly6 I can only read license plates on cars that come "too close". If cars leave me a safe passing distance, then I probably don't need to read their license plate anyway (unless they throw something at me I suppose). But then I've got a Fly12 on the front which is a bit clearer :-)
Hi I have a fly6 camera light very clear and I will get to update my SIM card to 32 gig instead of 8 gig that comes with it I just want to know how to view my footage a lot quicker and easier way to upload and view pls let me know thanks. Alex. Lencioni 🚴🏿🇦🇺
Hi Alex, It depends: 1. You will need a Card Reader for the micro SD card. here is one on Amazon for under $10 amzn.to/2y8JCmJ 2. If you have a MAC you will need to convert the .AVI files recorded on the fly6 to .MP4 so that they will be view-able. Mac's use Quicktime player as the default player, along with iMovie or Final Cut Pro X for video editing. All of which do not support .AVI file format. So one easy fix is to download "Handbrake". Here is a link from CNET for free download: download.cnet.com/HandBrake/3000-2140_4-43951.html Once you have downloaded Handbrake, it as simple as drag/drop some AVI files into the handbrake tool, and convert to another file format(.MP4). Hope this helps!
Don’t bother with them .Not worth the money or trouble .I spent over $200 to get one and the camera has never worked and cyclic has stopped answering emails.Go but a rival brand , you would be better off.
Jeff Greene -was corresponding with them by email and had trouble understanding the way they were talking. Asked them to speak in plain English so I could understand as I don’t understand what they are talking about ,the terminology , they said get someone that could and then stopped answering emails .
daryll rae thats unfortunate. Question for you. Does the fly6 unit not record, or do you just see a bunch of unviewable files if you try to play them on a MacBook perhaps? If using a MacBook, you won't be able to view AVI files. Not sure if this the problem you are a having? Free download of "handbrake" would be all you need to resolve.

Hi Cycling Vids, thanks for the comment. I am glad you like it. Still going strong after many miles and charges.
Glad to hear it!
bought the fly6 after watching this video, thanks!!!
Mario Reda oh wow very cool. Thanks for the feedback and letting me know.

Great review! Thanks for the video
Thanks for vid. I have the Fly6 but could not play back video on my mac. I now realise I need a conversion tool. Thanks a mill....

id appreciate samples of the fly 6 footage
Hi shapattu, this vid has quite a bit of fly 6 footage: ruclips.net/video/hc9id-C5d70/видео.html
Do you recommend the Cycliq Fly6? Or is a GoPro good enough?

I think the battery life is a lot better than a GoPro. My GoPro Sessions only gets about 1 1/2hr of recording time. @@JeffGreeneChannel
Hi Jeff, how did you mount your Garmin Radar at the seat?

HI Jeff, Garmin varia or fly6 would you prefer to bring if you can only bring one of them?
Christopher Sucipto Huang ...for me i never leave home without the Varia. really nice having an audible beep when a car is approaching from behind. i ride on mostly suburban and rural roads. in a dense city the beeps would be too frequent , and you would be likely to tune them out.
Thank you, Jeff Greene.
Thanks Kevin!

what is an alternative to that camera ?
Hi Dmitry, you can always mount a GoPro just about anywhere. The only downside is the shorter battery life.

it's the 8gb sd card that came with the fly 6
Phil John i used diff sd card than the stock one included with th fly 6. You could try the one inside your smartphone to use as a test.
but they recommend a 10 s d card, and certain makes sandisk, samsung

The strap that comes in the box is weak. The strap came u done and I lost my fly 6 on a ride, due to the weak strap...
For the price I rather get a gopro session 4.
the battery won't last anywhere as long as the Fly 6
Don’t bother with them .Not worth the money or trouble .I spent over $200 to get one and the camera has never worked and cyclic has stopped answering emails.Go but a rival brand , you would be better off.
daryll rae thats interesting, i have not had any issues with my fly6 in the last year. Perhaps a bad unit?
