- This is believed to be a 120’ long 2 masted schooner named Contest that ran aground in 1882. It was buried in the sand dunes and was first mentioned/discovered in 1942. The sand then reclaimed it until it was exposed again in 1974. Then sand reclaimed it and it appeared again in 2018. We went and saw it today because it is exposed again.
It’s located next to the south pier of the channel going to White Lake. If you park at the museum, you can walk out to the pier and see it.
It is owned by the state of Michigan and it is illegal to remove anything from it.
So interesting. Thank you😋
My home town
Well hello there fellow Michigander I’ve been to Whitehall many many times done a lot of videos there I definitely need to get back here and see this
It’s pretty awesome I’ll have to check out your channel
It probably won’t be there in the summer. The lake has gone down and it won’t take long for the dunes to reclaim it.
@@SilverSleuth I’ll be back before summer I am in the West Michigan area also I’m about 30 minutes away
Cool and thanks for the video! I've seen a few pics on facebook with this old shipwreck.
Did you see them in the group Abandoned, Old and Interesting Places in Michigan group?
@@SilverSleuth It was on the Michigan Hiking and Backpacking group.
@@metaldetecting4fun214 I’m not a member of that’ group.

Beautiful Lake Michigan! Lots of Summertime memories there. I just ordered a spiral wheel and plan on venturing up to Lake Superior for some black sand prospecting this summer. Perhaps I'll check out the vicinity of the old Ropes Mine. You never know? Thanks for posting!
