  • Freespirit Recreation Evolution RoofTop Tent Review - In the snow and cold
We took the Freespirit Recreation Evolution Roof Top Tent to the mountains of Colorado during a snow and wind storm to test the warmth and durability of this rooftop tent. The all metal frame and tri layer walls withstood some serious wind and snow as well as kept us warm in 15-20F temps.
We will be doing many more reviews and tips on this rooftop tent. So stay tuned!

I just ordered the Roofnest Sparrow last night, and now I'm wishing I'd bought this instead!

Heck yes! I have the 150w and 180w mounted on the top of the RTT. They are quickly charging the 1000w battery (even in November with the little sun we get). The 200w panel is cranking out well at our home too.
Heading up to shoot the video on these panels later today!

Hi! I saw in one of the comments you said you miss some things about your roofnest. What we’re those things you miss?

    • @Engearment
      @Engearment  Год назад

Hey Abbey! Good question. I miss being able to close the tent by pulling on two straps, as apposed to pulling on one strap and having to climb up the ladder and pull the tent down by grabbing the roof. I miss being able to store the ladder in the tent as well. But the tradeoff in other areas (durability and more slim profile) have been worth it.

have by any chance seen Explore Southwest's video "Roof Top Tents aren't all they're cracked up to be"?

I have, and he has some strong opinions, and I don't agree with a lot of them. Some of what he says is spot on. Some are just complaining. Also, he is using a soft side RTT, something I would never do. Please don't let one person and their opinions sway you too much. I suppose it is good to check out several points of view before making a good size purchase. Many of the issues he brings up can be managed.
As a person who spent decades using legit 4 season tents (and still do - you can see those reviews on this RUclips channel) I am really happy with the ease of use for RTT. As well as the extra weather protection. I can go on and on about how to make sense of all his complaints, and how to do them better.
I get frustrated when people complain. A lot. He did a good job of listing out his complains. Most of us just find a quick workflow and apprecaite camping.
Hope my side of that "pro/con" gives some balance to his video.

So I loved your reviews of the two popup roof tents and was about to pull the trigger on the Roofnest Sparrow XL but now leaning towards the Freespirit Evolution 55” instead. Because I’m concerned about the issue you encountered with cracking.
I’m finishing my 100 series Landcruiser build and need to confirm it will work with a Prinsu roof rack and the ladder can be switched to passenger side since I’m going with a 270 degree awning on driver’s side. Seems like you can reverse it so the main door can be on passenger side?
BTW, I was raised in Berthoud camped at Lake Mac every Summer for 25 years and now living in Montana near Glacier National Park so the insulation is major selling point too.
Your StarLink/Solar Panel setup is exactly want I plan to do too since I work 100% remote as a software executive. Your videos were super valuable.

Hello Scott! Thanks for the awesome note! So glad we can be of help. Great question on this tent. I believe you can just rotate it 180 to put the door on the other side. Lake Mac! How great! And a CO native. You get it on needing the insulation.
The Starlink has been a GAME changer! I have been wanting a solution for remote working as well (my other occupation is teaching fitness) I cant wait to hear how the build goes and what adventures you get into!
Thanks again for the wonderful note. Made my day!

Hi, great review! Did you fit solar panels and if so, how did you route the electric cables? The pop-up design would require wiring which can extend when it's in the up position and shorten when closed.

Hello! Thanks for the nice note! Yes, I installed a few solar panels on the roof. It was very easy. I made a video for it as well. I use extension cables between the panels and the battery and that way I had enough cable to allow the tent to pop open fully. ruclips.net/video/J22oWup2oPc/видео.html

Is this tent black out? I plan on moving to southern BC and living out of this for the summer :) I like pitch black darkness when I sleep!

It is pretty dark in there, if you want it to be. There are small sections of lighter color material on each side that let a little light in though.

I was just watching your 500day
roofnest video yesterday and I appreciated the details and insight. Then found this brand in another video. Was surprised to see you have it now.
If you have the top vent open where does the condensation go?
I imagine it forms on the top aluminum, does it have a way to escape the inner roof?
Or a slope or texture so it doesn't just drip back down.
Does it tell you how much extra weight it will hold while popped up?
    Thanks for the video

Hello Jason Glad you enjoyed the 500 day review. But I hope this review covers why I would up with the Freespirit test (Roofnest broke a few months after that video was shot)
Yes, the roof top vent allows the condensation to escape well. There is a few inches of delegation from inner tent and aluminum. I can show that in the next video (should have that up in a few weeks)
I don’t know for sure how much extra weight it will hold. That is a good question. I will check with Freespirit on what it will currently hold, and if there is an ability to push it to hold even more.
I just mounted solar panels on this yesterday and will be testing that, additional cel booster and Starlink in the set up. Hope that helps!

It’s been 2 months since you posted this video. How are you liking this rooftop tent? I was also considering buying the Roofnest sparrow, but decided against it due to the cracking issue. Now I’m only looking at metal frame RTTs with crossbar availability.

    • @Engearment

Hello Stephen! Great question. I have really been liking the Freespirit. However,, there are many features from the Roofnest that I really do like (and miss now with the Freespirit).
      1) agreed - the cracking on the Roofnest is why I stopped using it and opted for another tent. However, after repairing the Roofnest, I feel that I miss many of its features. I think going with a metal frame will avert the issues I encountered.
      2) things I like about the RTT from Freespirit are 1) warm 2) easy to set up 3) all metal and flat on top (so I can mount several solar panels) 4) ability to swap out the stock bed for an EXPED Duo mat (which we will have a review on) 5) built in lights 6) condensation control 7) all metal clamps instead of 1/2 metal 1/2 cloth.
Hope any or all of that helps!

How do you get your doggie up into the tent?

    • @Engearment
      @Engearment  Год назад

Great question! I should probably make a video on this. Basically, I wrap both arms under the torso of the pooch and get her to chest level. From there I go to the ladder and take one step at a time, grabbing a rung with one hand. When we get to the top, I place her in the tent. It works very well.
