    Talk about a well deserved win! This is one! God she was good. That slamming of the phone! The show wasn’t the same after her death. There could’ve been so much more storytelling just dealing from the fallout. Imagine Maureen falling into the arms of Roger for consoling. Ed would’ve went ballistic. “You have broken my heart” - the last words of Maureen Bauer.

    Ellen Parker expressed her gratitude toward the good friends whom she made on the show. She made a positive impression on me because no one likes being dismissed/rejected and from what I understood it was the producer who made that decision. She admits fans miss her and she misses working on GL. Parker worked a great deal in theater and I ran across two Wendy Wasserstein plays she was cast in. One is "The Heidi Chronicles" that played on Broadway & another Wasserstein vehicle "Uncommon Women and Others" played off- Broadway. She also re-created her character for the teleplay when it was taped for broadcast in 1978.

      The Guiding Light should have gotten rid of Vanessa Chamberlain because after she got divorced from Billy Lewis, she didn't have much of a storyline. Her pairing with Matt Reardon was a big mistake because she looked more like a mother to him than a wife.

    I remember seeing her on Law And Order after this and I know she did a broadway show. She's so good with nuance and you can feel the love/her heart is even in the smallest of scenes, which is why we cared so much when Maureen was killed off.

    My older sister and I became huge “Guiding Light” watchers starting in summer of 1992 with the big blackout storyline and 40th anniversary prime time special of the show. We previously watched a bunch of other soaps for years but never “Guiding Light” till we saw commercials and soap magazine articles hyping up the blackout storyline and 40th anniversary of the show. We immediately got sucked into show and watched it religiously. The writing at the time was better than our other favorite soaps. The storylines and actors were extremely intriguing. Anyway, when Maureen died in the show about a half year later, we were very upset. We knew it was coming because her firing was reported in soap magazines, but it didn’t soften the blow. I’m not kidding, but when the doctor in the hospital told everyone that she died, and then the long credits rolled dedicated to her with “Goodbye My Friend” playing, we were sobbing so much that our mother came in the living room wondering why we were so upset. This was a character in a TV show we had been watching for about 6 months, but we were crying like we knew Maureen in real life for many years!

    Perfect. Jill Farren Phelps, the EP of GL at the time, told the writers to kill off Maureen because the actress didn't rate that highly with a focus group. The writers obliged - and one of the biggest backlashes against a daytime show commenced. That's why it was so wonderful when Ellen Parker won the Emmy that year. GL never recovered. Lesson learned, JFP? Naw. She ruined other shows after.

      To be fair, on Another World, JFP did try to save Frankie from being killed by the stalker--probably because she remembered the backlash from Maureen Bauer's death, and knew that it would be unpopular, but head writer Margaret DePriest overruled her and JFP resigned as a result...

    • @hshawn00
      @hshawn00 4 года назад +3

      I think there is an audience that would appreciate that type of writing. This is part of the reason why many people don't watch them anymore. Soaps used to be about families and relationships and many of them were multi-generational. Now as you said, they are full of young model types that can't act their way out of mousetrap. I won't say all of them because I've watched some scenes here on youtube with some of the younger actors from General Hospital and Young and the Restless that were pretty good. The biggest issue is that the soaps nowadays become obsessed with a few popular actors/characters and ignore the rest of the cast. Soaps use to write for all of the characters.

    • @69bucksfan
      @69bucksfan 4 года назад +5

      @@hshawn00 Agree. Back in the day, emotions didn't last for one episode like they do now. In the past, the writing made sense and there was actual intimacy between characters that made things more dramatic and fallout from things like this consumed years of story line (remember Roger/Holly/Ed). Today's drive through emotions don't resonate and you can get the cheap thrills from reality tv crap.
