years after its first release it seems to still be the most versatile, expandable and generous rack of pre's out there. Crazy.
This video is really helpful and informing👍🏾👍🏾I’m just getting into recording live bands and I’ve been eyeing this gear for the preamp, compressor and ADAT combo. This video just helped me confirm that it would fit just right in my studio
Had any trouble with heat dissipation? I notice you have two tube-based units right on top of each other with no gap for airflow. Not trying to scold you, just genuinely wondering bc, well, if they don't get too hot, they don't get too hot 😄🤷♂ Thanks!
I actually had 3 computer fans wired to USB power behind them for that purpose. But that being said I rarely used the EQ, so little that I got rid of it shortly after the video. So honestly I never really put it through its paces enough to know if they would have gotten too hot without the gap. I really should have just done it in the first place
The wordclock and A/D ADAT outputs alone make this thing an incredible value if you have a USB/Thunderbolt interface that accepts wordclock and ADAT. I've got mine paired with a Tascam US 20x20. The 710-D's ADAT output let's you skip the Tascam's pres completely. It's basically Mic->Tube Pre->Pure A/D straight through the USB to the DAW. No extra cables daisychaining pres and risking adding noise.
The fact that the tubes run at proper voltage and it has usable built-in compression is a bonus. Track down a couple of Mullards (or whatever flavor tube you like) for a swap and you're golden, though the tubes it comes with sound great too. I've actually felt no need to swap.
Hi there! I was thinking to use the Heritage Audio HA-609A Dual-Channel Compressor in the insert. would that make sense or should the built-in compressor in the UA 4-710d be enough?
@@anemonaloco The built-in comp is nice, but only has settings for "slow" and "fast". No controls for threshold, attack, ratio, release, etc....using a dedicated comp as an insert will give you much greater control.
@@GeekTherapyRadio thanks for the quick reply! i like the sound of these preamps and like you said above the A/D ADAt output is a no-brainer.
@@anemonaloco I can't recommend it highly enough. I'd just relegate the built-in comp to a "nice to have", but to use something with more control as an insert if you've got it.
@@GeekTherapyRadio kewl! i'll keep it in mind. also would I need a clock generator if I ever use two of these? I'm using the PreSonus Quantum 26x32 Thunderbolt 2 Audio Interface which have two AD/ADAT in and two out.
great video mate
Great vid. you were the only channel I saw that mentioned the word clock feature of this unit. I'm recieving my unit tomorrow and was debating returning it on arrival. Hope I dig it as much as you.
Awesome, im glad it helped some!
Interesting piece of gear. Thanks for your clip. ✌🏼
What is the switch on the right side of the meter just below the low-cut filter.? Thanks for your help
Great video. Thanks!
Man I’m trying to basically build a hyrbrid 500 series rack for tracking at first than mixing
And I’m
Wondering if this helps integrate ,… I think I jacked up I got a neve 10 slot RND I think I shoulda got Cranborne for the Adat feature
But can’t you do a similar thing with this ?
I'm not positive if you can, but what I think you might be able to do is ADAT into the 710d and use the 4 passive channels for the AD and have you 500 series be the preamp. You should certainly double check me on that, maybe ask a rep at sweetwater or something!
That's a really awesome piece of gear! Out of my budget right now though!
I hear that bud! Me too, if it weren't for Sweetwater financing lol
My apologies if this appears on here twice. What is the purpose of the switch that is to the right of the meter just below the Low cut filter switch? Thanks. Great video.
No problem! To my understanding (and I could be wrong but Im just speaking from my experience) But I believe this switch assigns the channel to the digital output section or the interface function of the unit. When the switch was off it wouldn't work in my DAW) hope this helps! Sorry I don't know the exact technical jargon!
@@johntoland2991 Thanks for the reply. I will experiment with it in the studio. I could dig out the manual but I don’t want to break my record of never looking at a manual😊 thanks again
@@douglasrorrer7697 Absolutely! Glad I could help
@@johntoland2991
I quickly pulled up the manual online. And it turns out that switch is the polarity switch. Enjoying your channel.
@@douglasrorrer7697 Thanks for clearing that up!
Hey thank you so much for this video. I purchased one used after watching this video. I want to connect it to my Apollo with adat and word clock but the guy at guitar center didn’t know how lol. Do you know what cables I need to buy to do that? I bought it used so there wasn’t a manual.
Sorry for the late reply! Im glad I could help a little bit. Literally all you need is an optical ADAT cable and plug it from your apollo to the 710 and it will pipe all your audio and everything thru it as well as the wordclock!
How long have you had for? And have you run into any issues being that its made in china? Best regards, this definitely been on my eye for a while!
Sorry, I just saw you're comment! No I haven't had any trouble at all out of it. I have used it for about 2 years now. I don't use the plugs on the back, as its routed to a patch bay, so idk about the durability of those, but thats why I use a patchbay just in case. thanks for teh question and again I apologize for my late response.
I’ve had my unit for 10 years now and use it religiously and have had zero issues
Can you bypass the compressor..?
Sorry for the late response! Yes, you can bypass the compressor in each of the the channels withe a pre amp on it. The compressor is rather simple, it only allows for 3 settings, "Fast," "Slow," and "off" so if you dont want to use it you dont have to have a compressor.
@@johntoland2991 one other thing to note, the compressor is by default at a 4:1 ratio
If you crank the gain and turn down the level on the tube setting does it get that tube saturation?
Absolutely. You can crank the pre to usable guitar distortion. Had my 710-D for several years now.
yes, sounds incredible for drums, bass, and other weird vocals
Yes it does! I typically do that when I'm trying to get a more Motown bass sound
Would you still buy it now ?
Yes, I would certainly still buy it, I've had it for about 3 years now. I mostly use it on drums and bass but I also throw it in on BG vocals to mix things up and I Also use it warm up guitars when I'm using amp sims.
How do you use the output knob? Can i use the gain knob to push the tubes hard to saturate then use it as an output attenuator? Or is it for the compresser etx
Yes. You can crank the tube pre to distortion, then bring it down to usable level with level knob.
The only bad thing about this unit is there is no ADAT In.. why tf would they do that?
hi can I use the uad 4710 d with my apollo twin
sure can. You can run an optical line out of the 4710d into the apollo :)
Sorry for taking so long to get back to you, I didn't realize I had any comments on the video. Like Patrick Ryan said, you can run an optical line to your apollo twin and it gives you all 4 preamp channels added to your twin as well as 4 more passive channels. I run my lunch box for my 500 series gear through those passive channels. This brings your standard apollo twin to a total of 10 inputs! Very powerful and effective.
Anybody have any issues getting the line ins to work? My setup is la-610 & solo 610 into lines 5 & 6 respectively of the 4-710d, then the 4-710d into the Apollo. The first 4 channels show up in console just fine, but the lines in won’t show up! My first time dabbling with adat/ word clock/ etc. also, I’m pretty new to Console. Thanks!
@@bradwaller6811 I recently acquired the UA 4d 710 and had issues with that. I contacted UA support and they gave me the road map to make it work (with Logic Pro X but I assume it should work with most DAW). So in case you haven't done it I suggest you contact them as well. Good luck!
@@bradwaller6811 yea so basically, adat has limitations. Don't worry the rest will show up, just need to configure your interface correctly. How many adat cables are you using? One adat input cable into the interface from the ua?
