As a Maori, this song goes back so many many moons, back in my intermediate school days - for as long as I can remember and I am honoured that this song is sung by another culture. It's nice to know that our maori te reo be recognized and taught and brought into the international community, so therefore, am proud of this choir group. I took on to speak, read and write spanish and have taught this song to my spanish speaking (mexican/colombian/peruvian) South American friends. In saying all this, to me, it's showing respect for each other's culture and values. Kia ora tatou tatou katoa.
To share cultures destroys the myths that generate conflict, culture should unite and not divide.
You actually learn from each others cultures and are taught the myths behind it. Conflict is a negative value. so therefore does not exist when learning of each others background. But, however, you are entitled to your opinion just as I am entitled to mine.
I think you have misunderstood my comment, probably the way I have written it, we are both saying the same thing, an insight to other cultures can only ever be a good thing.
Firstly how wonderful is youtube I sitting at my puter in 2019 and see this just amazing.
What intermediate?

I agree, negativeness isn't good, but it was done better by Key Cygnatures from Westlake Girls at like the 2005 Big Sing. It was done very well in fact.

Before I go through the comment's section, I'm betting there's going to be a bit of whinning about the😂 word's.and the voice's or arrangement.ffs at least these Ausies gave it a go,better than any of you can pronounce Aboriginal place name's,
Well done kid's you did great,❤
Now let's see how far I get in the comment's to read the First whinny comment
hello, , could you give me the lyrics and the translation please ? I'd would like to sing this song with my students... thank you very much, and yout perform is really beautifull ! Thanks for this moment !
There's different versions out there but they mostly have a clip with the lyrics already in the video
Lovely. Can someone tell me what the words mean, please?
Waitakere Highigt School
Attention this could be a dump question but does every pupil from New Zealand learn the Maori language?
New Zealand has two official languages, Maori and English. Maori and Europeans stand side by side equally and most speak both as naturally breathing.
@@noididnt7972 most do not speak te reo Maori fluentl. But all know basic maori words.
, yes /
Who made the arrangement?
Slow it down please. this waiata was not made to be this fast
Heartwarming beautyful! I cried.
But why is there not a single maori person in that choir? No maori students at that school? Or no maoris interessted in a white peoples version of maori tradition?
This choir is from Australia

Jacob Samoa is from a from the wanganga o aotearoa version with a Wellington dialect and its takiwa ki not taki waki
Jacob Samoa hard aue
Too fast
They could make the same type pronounciation mistakes if they were singing songs in French, Spanish, Chinese, Russian, German, etc.
These were young Australian School Children giving it their best shot-Not a talented Maori chorus. Not wise to make the good the enemy of the perfect. Just sayin'....
Takes a lot to learn why decry people that are trying. Do you walk round in ---------
taki waki??? Sorry some of those words are just made up.
😂
jellybee68 Looked up a translation:
"Our tribe is calling to the people
who have just set foot on this marae
Bring with you the memories of all our dead
and so many tears spilling forth nation-wide.
Look at our people working across the land
spread out far and wide
Shaking is the ground, quivering is the sea.
Oh, the love and the pain within me.
The ground shakes and quivers, yeah!"
(folksong.org.nz/e_te_iwi_e/)
So yeah. Maybe it's not your place to decide if a language you don't speak has meaning.
+aeternamente13 You're on a totally different page. Jellybee68 simply made a comment regarding the groups incorrect pronouncation and the possibility that many/some words were taught incorrectly ('taki waki' - 'whatiwhati'). Nevertheless, great effort, all! It is tough learning a different language, just a few tweaks here and there but otherwise awesome job!
Chavaughn Clark Oh gosh! I'm so sorry! You're right, I totally misunderstood.
aeternamente13 I am Maori and have sung this song since I was knee high to a grasshopper. I applaud anyone from another culture taking on another's I suppose I am more into learning the correct way of singing it as I would like to do justice to a song and honour that culture. I honestly cannot believe another Maori taught this song and its more than likely the tutor liked the tune or saw it on youtube and "copied" it as best as they could. IMO (and its just mine) If you are going to be on the world stage and singing someone elses culture...please do the right thing and at least find someone who knows the song and words.
Best to leave the "kapa haka" to the kapa haka groups please
Where tf y'all got the lyrics from? It's all wrong!
wth making up words!! im maori!!!!
Oosh, too much alrite
Your harmonies were aight, but the person going high just stop. ✌️
Oh be quiet
Cultural appropriation. Just young people being compelled to conform. It’s that bad .
the pronounciation of aue is really bad
just wish you were taught the proper words maybe should have gotten a Maori kaiarahi to teach you the proper lyrics but like I said good effort I don't know what taki waki is but sure is funny never heard that Word in my culture at all must be a new Maori kupu hahaha
They singing it wrong they put Maori songs to shame
wrong wrong wrong wrong
Sing it wrong
Shard up critics
ahahha wtf? not even in tune 😂😂
Toi Te Rito lmao it is, it’s probably been arranged to a lower key.
stop hating lol I thought they were...okay
Shut up Donkey
Yeah shard up
Cringe....
