    I don't understand why they bothered with Primaris being a separate thing. Just release them (and the new units) as regular Space Marines. With so much size creep over the years, it's totally do able. "oh yah they're bigger now we can now sculpt them how we've always wanted them new plastics/sculpting tools." Boom. Done.

    • @olith
      @olith 2 года назад +7

      The issue would have been having new customers, and returning customers, not knowing what to buy as the range would have had different sizes across it - and Primaris are much bigger than the oldest (1987) Marines all the way through to even the latest Grey Knights and Deathwatch. The older range was so vast that replacing it would have been a nightmare. It still isn't replaced now nearly 5 years later (GW have production restraints). They obviously decided it was the riskier of the two options and went with the one we got, which worked for them. It also had the added benefit of people buying new models and treating it as a new army..
      The lore, look and units might not be ideal for a lot of people, but GW have proven they made a good choice as despite all the internet complaints the models are all over Instagram and RUclips and GW's sales went huge.

      @@olith if you think theres no major size difference between RTB01 beakies and the most modern old style marines I'm not sure how to reply.
      Also I think you're selling new players intelligence short. 40k isn't rocket science.

      @olith 2 года назад +3

      @@aaronbrown4275 I am saying Primaris are bigger than all the marines from RTB01 through to the largest First born in the Grey Knights and Deathwatch, so the first born range despite having size differences are still nothing compared to Primaris. They stand out against everything. Even the latest Death Guard.
      I sort r/warhammer40k by new everyday. I am not over estimating the confusing nature of the 40k marine product range is or new players. 5 years on people still pick up first born stuff and are confused by it compared to their Primaris stuff.
      I should also add, because you specifically said you didn't understand why they bothered, that a huge part of the decision was due to the legal ramifications of the Chapterhouse lawsuit and their move to lock down all their IP. GW are a miniature company that operate like an IP company and make games to promote it. Those things are the order of preference and importance in decision making.

    I love the new primaris marines but hate the floaty primaris tanks and transports. Hovercrafts suit the Eldar and Tau, not the SM. Rhinos and Land Raiders are way too iconic to be swept aside. Also lore-wise shouldn't Orks start to become larger in size and smarter? They're genetically coded to adapt to threat levels.

    The only thing that could be improved on the Rubric marines is giving the leader the option of that pharaoh style head dress that the old upgrade kit came with. I feel like I must be the only person that likes when GW includes transparent elements in their kits; one of my favourite projects ever was painting an Eldar Fire Prism, messing with the transparent parts was so much fun. Honestly completely agree with the take on the Primaris marines, they really are both the best and the worst upgrade of an existing model, that's why I've heavily kitbashed and converted my Blood Angels taking the best elements of both the Primaris and Firstborn kits.

    Idk I think the Patriarch is great. He communicates through the hivemind so doesn't need to "speak" in the way we understand. Since they are under the sway of the hivemind, when they give birth to Purestrains or Acolytes that look completely mutated and nothing like the parents, they see them as beautiful. Naturally the Patriarch is seen as the most beautiful and awe inspiring of the entire cult. The point is that normal humans cannot understand what the cultists see in mutant xenos that is worthy to be worshipped.

    I always thought Primaris shouldn't have been presented as the "New and Better" alternative. Instead of having Guilliman come out of stasis to find whole chapters of them with the whole thing being a rather successful endeavor, it should have been a handful (by 40k standards) of viable Primaris marines with an hard to reproduce process compared to standard marines. Have them scattered across all existing chapters as specialists with their shiny new toys.
    No intercessors and the other 10 man squads, no grav vehicles and dumb "Primaris can't ride this vehicle" rules, no primarisified existing characters. Only the specialized 3 man squads and new characters. Integrate them into the range, instead of making them replacements.

    My only issues with primaris are that they're too different from regular marines. I really like classic SM and largely read about first born when I was first starting since I started with grey knights, it was kinda lame to find out my guys were taking the bacak seat for some new version with less ridiculous drip. I also don't like all the new vehicles and tech (I hate aggressors, why replace terminators with these goofy big hand fellas). Like I thought the point of sms was that they're so badass, etc that they don't even need it. Horrifying Eldar hover tanks and psychic shenanigans? Load the boys up in the gun box with treads from ww1. Now it's all hovertanks and shit. I prefer the older helmets as well.
    I dont mean to seem whiny, primaris are fine in their own way, I just don't see why they needed to shoe horn them into the lore and redesign and bloat the range when refresh like they've done in the past would be perfectly fine, and less messy lore wise.

Because I agree that more squads with varied weapons would be cool, but the models themselves are very customizable. The fact that helmets and shoulder pads are completely interchangeable with old kits also means you only really need a single veterans box for really good simple kitbashing.

    • @rudolfvonstrohhalm6948
      @rudolfvonstrohhalm6948 2 года назад +6

      @@TheKingsPride its becoming more apparent when you where building firstborn before: the sculpts are broken down into pretty small pieces which are ALL interchangeable. Add to that the different variations of armor pattern you had in the boxes, meaning that you had all those slight variations you could either spread out for uniformity or concentrate if you wanted to achieve a certain look. With primaris, you have legs and torso as one piece, which railways you in your arm choice as the pose is already 50% set. Another gripe I have are the helmet options in the intercessor kits, or the lack of them. All get the EXACT same helmet. And I personally don't really like them, which is a shame because the new konvex lenses are such a blessing to paint so I'm hesitant to put on Firstborn helmets despite them looking better.

    I wouldn't exactly agree with Space Marine to Primaris transition being an improvement. It is a matter of taste, I suppose. The improvement in model quality is undeniable, no question here. But in terms of general design, I feel like something has been lost.
    Intercessors do not quite give me the "space knight" vibe, the old marines do. They feel too... "tacticool" for their own good, too streamlined and generic. The massive drop in customisation also does not help here - Primaris units in general have miserable amount of options in comparison to firstborn - you are usually limited to very homogenous squad compositions.
    Now, there are some models that I like in Primaris Range - bladeguard vets capture the space-knight thing pretty well. And Phobos armour marines capture that fully fledged marines do not magically forget their stealth training as scouts. But when Primaris Drop the ball... they really drop the ball in my opinion - a lot of the heavier Primaris troops feel off to me.
    Most of the Gravis units feel goofy beyond reason - something feels off with them and I can't quite put a finger on it. And Suppressors... These ones I hate - heavier armour, heavy weapons... but grav chutes... it does not mix together very well. Or Inceptors, heavy jump troops basically carrying two sawn-off heavy bolters... That is something I would expect from orks.
    Primaris vehicles - I almost universally dislike them - they massively overdid the amount of guns slapped onto those things to some absolutely stupid levels. I mean, yeah, Baneblade is also kind of silly, but it is a monstrously huge tank but it packs 11 barrels total, while even smaller of the Primaris vehicles packs 5 guns... And stuff like Repulsor carries 12 guns...

    I'll be honest, I was not a fan of Primaris when I heard about them but building my Space Marine Battleforce over the past 2 weeks has made me do a 180. The models are so fun to build and I can definitely see why they are recommended to new players. Building the Heavy Intercessors has made me want to collect as much Gravis armored models as I can, especially since I am playing a homebrew Salamanders/Iron Warriors successor. Now my only issue with Primaris is the lack of weapon customization in the units themselves. Having a bunch of different bolter options is cool, but I miss all of the sergeant options along with special/heavy weapons for the rest of the squad. What makes Tactical Squads cool to me is that each squad can be so varied and have "hidden" threats. From a distance they can look like a "normal" squad, but Sergeant Kharden's combi-melta and Brother Nelius's meltagun can do some real work against armor if needed.

    I like firstborn and primaris, but i do wish they had just given us true scale marines,and then added new units and weapon options as part of Guillimans reforms. Could have had the best bits of the old designs and cool new things at a scale that actually compares well with a guardsmen. Hell 'primaris' could have meant a new elite force within the marines rather than an awkward replacement.

    You highlighted the problem with Primaris: its essentially the longest range refresh ever since they were scared of angering marine players. But it's time to rip the bandaid off and make the change, the book is bloated with lots of outmoded old profiles and outdated kits, they need to just say "and the tactical marines were converted or retired"

      While these are fair critiques you also have to deal with the old firstborn collectors screeching at primaris because "muh squatties marines" and "the sacred texts" towards the lore.

      Most users online suggest that most of the orks releases in 9th edition were rushed: the rules about dakka type weapons feels incomplete, like it was supposed to have some other bonus, the new kits for both type of boyz (normal and beastsnaggaz) are extremely monopose and forced loadout and like most of the codexes released between march-october 2021 suffered of extremely poor internal balance and pushed units.
      I simply hope for a complete reworks of the new boyz, but GW surely will want to get back the cost of the mold

    Dude, the original metal scouts are from 1989, long before 2nd edition. There was an original release of metal scouts for Rogue Trader, complete with some rather unusual weapon choices (including a shuriken catapult, a laspistol and a punch dagger) but they had a lot of character. Then after Advanced Space Crusade introduced some less than great plastic scouts right at the start of the '90s they were bolstered by another wave of metal models. All of those would predate the metal scouts released in 2nd edition.

    While the 4th generation of Plaguebearers really are a huge step up from the previous ones, that sadly can't be said about the rest. 3rd-gen Bloodletters used to look strong and brutal, now they look lanky and ghoulish. Daemonettes used to look elegant and agile, now they look wrinkly and static. And Horrors used to look properly horrifying, but now they look straight-up goofy.

My only gripe is how I want more existing models to get a refresh ASAP, like the Eldar or Chaos SMs. Also that principle goes into Age of Sigmar even. Like the Echoes of Doom box set. • @Pers0n97

    You went too easy on the new boyz.
    That new kit is literally unfit for purpose. It doen't even contains the most BASIC gear for that unit, like a full set of gun and mele weapons, and they replaced one of the boyz with the Nob, which means you can't even build a 20 boy squad with 2 boxes.
    As for the primaris, their main sin is to to ONLY use very bland MK10 armors, ALL THE SAME without even variants on the chestplate emblems.
    What they should have done is mix some old marks of armors on their sprues, the same way the old marine skits use to have, and simply use the excuse that if you can upgrade a marine, you can upgrade a piece of gear too, especially one that is millenia old and should be treated as a relic. You don't just discard that.

  • @bionicgeekgrrl

    We're still in the primaris transition phase. They'll be the only option now hh is out. Gradually older first born will be removed from 40k and become hh instead. They'll still have legends rules so it won't make a big difference outside of tournaments. But it is high time that they cut down the options for sm considerably. The rhino and land raider will of course go with the first born I expect. The hover tanks look more future tech than the older ww2 or ww1 styled tanks. They've all had a good run though! The rhino was the first 40k plastic kit and the first plastic vehicle for 40k, back in 1988! It has not really changed that much since, same for the land raider.

    Personally I can’t really take the books seriously when it comes to the Primaris. They’re trying to play it out like some underdog story which makes no sense when you’re marketing these bloody things as “the bigger, stronger, smarter, just better” space marines. Like boo hoo, the poor super duper Ubermensch don’t feel welcome by the regular ubermensch. Poor babies.
    And trying to be “cute” about reflecting the criticisms of irl players into the actual lore with shit like “oh it’s thunder warriors all over again” or “they’re Ultramarines painted red” does nothing. They’re still an asspull meant to shake you down for money.

    While they were heavy, I miss the winged creatures made from metal. Where I could bend and make each metal dragon, griffin, and daemons. Battle damage of bent weapons, dents, and on mechs and vehicles when they were metal. Peening hammers, padded pliers, and gentle bending by hand.
    Hopefully a lot of the same in plastics can be softened enough to bend and shape wings. Though, I guess careful drill, file, and Dremel work for vehicles.

    I completely disagree with the patriarch sentiment. almost all of the cult fanatism and worship is due to a psychic link, and the patriarch is almost the same organism as a broodlord. it "looks like an animal" because it basically is one.
    in the recent novel Day of Ascension, one of the main characters, an up and coming cult Magus, describes the coming tyranids as grotesque and horrifying... but incredibly beautiful. she's even told by a techpriest that her kind will be nothing more than food for them, and her reaction was "... so?" the genestealer cults worship the tyranids as fervently as any corpse worshipper does with the Emperor.

  • @Malisteen

    Primaris are such cool models, & so badly hampered by poor decision making. Someone clearly just wanted new, true scale marines, but somebody else said 'you're not allowed to do new kits for the existing marine units since those kits still sell & less people will buy the new models b/c they already have the old ones', so they were forced to do them as entirely new units, bloating the overall space marine line beyond all reason, forcing them to effectively maintain two completely redundant model lines, making it impossible for gw to transition without desupporting people's existing armies which never goes over well, making it less likely for many older space marine players to transition since the primaris aren't just newer better models for their army but something semi-seoarate altogether. It's a mess.
    Glad they didn't try it w/ my chaos marines, just gave us nice, new, quietly upscaled units for the existing squads, confident existing players would trade up based purely on the quality of the new models.

    For me number 1 on a top 1 list was the Sisters of Battle. The number 1 on the worst 1 list was when the new Sisters of Battle got boring ass Space Marine Predators and other stuff that basically told me GW wants them to just be Firstborn Spess Mehreens instead of staying as their own thing.
    Oh and Daemonettes get a special mention, which when compared to new Slaanesh stuff just look bad and hideous. Not Slaanesh hideous, but knee-jerk redesign due to complaints from pearl-clutching mums rendered with ancient and crap plastic molding processes hideous. Seriously, look at a Daemonette and look at the Keeper of Secrets, then look at the AoS Hedonites and the Keeper, and try to tell me with a straight face that there is a continuum of design between the lesser and greater daemons.

    Unpopular opinion but much like the boys the new vanilla chaos marines suck, the old kit was simply amazing, l bought about a dozend of them it gave you so many options to play with, including a chaos lord upgrade sprew and optional parts for every chaos god. The new one is just one piece fixed models with two sets of different arms and interchangable heads and shoulder plates, they're so boring.
    Also most of the plastic demons simply don't hold up to the 3rd ed metal sculpts. On that note the greater demons are probably the best remakes, except for the new keeper, that one just looks like shit, the old one wasn't a masterpiece either but come on just look what creature caster is doing l don't want the emissary of the dark prince look like my grampa crossdressing for christ's sake.
    Adding as a footnote, even tho l love the old model from the bottom of my heart, the new eldar wraithlord is also exceptionally better.
