There's no way Avenged Sevenfold had anything to do with Journey's set. Bands' crews don't get to make those kind of dB limiting calls at festivals, let alone trying to implement them on one of the best selling rock bands of all time. My guess is that Arnel just unfortunately had an off night, the FOH Engineer for Journey probably also had an off night, and that whole "dB limiting" thing made it's way to Neal from their crew and he just ran with it.
I’d say you’re right. I saw A7X at a festival one time and the absolutely sucked. The mix was horrid, Matt was off. Or like you said , maybe the voice just isn't working that night . There's endless variable up there that can throw you off, at least he's really signing
I watched the whole concert yesterday. Arnel was clearly having trouble with the in-ears. He kept putting them on and taking them off all the time, and sometimes you could see him getting frustrated. And not only him, the sound in general was weird. You could hear the drums or the keyboard increasing volume all of a sudden in the middle of a song. And even when Deen sang, you could hear how bad his mic's was set.
Look I'd rather hear mistakes it happens this tells me it's live. His vocals are difficult following in Steve's shoes not a easy task so lighten up folks. At least he's not lip syncing like Motley crue and hoards of others that you pay big bucks. Give the guy a break.
I was at Rock in Rio, I was very close to the stage, close to where Synyster Gates usually is, from where I was, the crowd was enjoying the show, singing along, the only problem I felt was that the Arnel's voice seemed a little low at first, but then it improved as he asked the technical team to adjust the volume. Everything else was ok, and I think people (we Brazilians) are taking it a bit hard on him, and they're making as much drama as possible too. Blaming the A7X for anything is just hilarious HAHA. Remembering that, at Rock in Rio 2013 when A7X performed, the fans of Slayer and Iron Maiden made the hell with the guys, and they went ahead and put on a great show and didn't act like butt hurts. It's like Ronnie said: "Avenged are the nicest people possible, absolutely zero egos." CHILL.
@@dr.darkroomThat doesn’t change anything. In ears if anything when they’re off are WAY WORSE than wedges. They’re extremely finicky and require a lot of setup and tweaks. At a festival you usually don’t have that, especially if you’re not the headliner.

Pineda is a TOP tier singer, he just had an off night and probably had issues with his ear monitor. Just shrug it off like an adult rather than act like Mean Girls.
I'm not a fan of either of these bands, but I dont understand why Journey and A7X would even be on the same bill to begin with. Before bashing any of these musicians, that's the real question that needs to be asked here.
Arnel has a LOT of reasons to leave Journey which have nothing to do with an off night or his IEM's not working. Those reasons are Neal and Jonathan and how these two grown ass men (and their wives) can't keep their personal lives out of the band. Also, Arnel is singing some of the hardest songs in rock, which is why Steve Perry is called "The Voice." Speaking of which, Perry has long been Arnel's biggest cheerleader. I think Arnel needs to leave for his health. Lifelong Journey fan here and it's been hard seeing a band I've loved for decades turn into a bad soap opera. 😮
Arnel is a phenomenal vocalist, and I wish he'd stay with Journey because when I saw them back in July they did a very amazing show. We love him and Journey in Nashville. Cheers!
Maybe take a Hiatus so he can rest his Vocal. Steve Perry and Steve Augeri all said they needed a break! So take some time off and rest. He is a great vocalist who is probably exhausted!
Yeah, this is a bad fight to pick. A7X is beloved by fans and their peers alike. They are among the sweetest performers of their generation... People still care about A7X. Journey is a washed-up relic that should be retired, especially if they can't handle some technical difficulties at a show. They say this singer has been with them for almost 20 years- you'd think he could act like a professional by now.

@@SueKay-rq1lr Because Arnel had a bad night. Like I said, I'm not saying anyone did anything wrong. People need to just stop. Unlike someone who plays an instrument. His voice is an instrument. You can change guitars. But, you can’t change your voice. Prayers to Arnel
This kind of thing does happen. Back in the 90s my band was just starting out and doing the bar circuit. We had a really nice local following and we got an offer to open for Molly Hatchet in one of the bars we frequently played in. We were pretty excited about meeting them and sharing the stage. The first thing they did was pull their tour bus around the back of the building and use it as their backstage / dressing room, so we didn't get to really meet them other than the sound check, which was where we found out we were not going to be able to set up and use our own PA system. Molly Hatchet had hired a local sound guy to do their sound and they didn't want to have to move anything around or make any adjustment after we performed. We had to use their Mixing board set up for their instruments. After they did their set up and sound check they simply placed the mics in front of our amps but wouldn't change any settings. The kicker was that I had to use a wired mic plugged into a plain channel with no effects. Not even the channel that Danny Joe Browns was using. I had a wireless mic and my own rig that had an Alesis Quadraverb, and an EQ, that they wouldn't let me use through their PA. It was pretty clear they didn't want us to sound better than them. We had 14 original songs and several sets of covers. We had decided to only play our originals that night. We got 7 songs in and they wanted us to leave the stage. We had that place packed and they wanted to capitalize on the crowd. The reason I know that was the case is because after they started playing, about half the crowd left. This was in the Lone Branch in Raleigh, NC, so think about that for a minute. They had the PA turned up way to loud and eventually blew the crossovers. I'm not going to comment on their performance. While they were waiting for the speakers to reset they lost a lot more of the audience. The funniest part of the whole thing that I remember was that during the sound check, Danny Joe Brown was wearing a corset that he later covered under a shirt. He tried to imply that it was a back brace but we all knew the difference.
To think I was there watching it live is wild! Honestly, Arnel’s stage presence was out of this world. He went over to the audience and was a great showman. Honestly, the local media keeps on saying that it was the worst performance but that is a freaking joke. He should not leave the band because of it, not because of freaking haters!!
I was there and really enjoyed Journey's performance. The show was great. There were some issues with the sound. Pineda even asked us if we were hearing all the instruments. It might not have been their greatest concert, but certainly it was a good one. I prefer having a great band in an off night than having those autotune lipsync concerts. I wish Journey all the best.
We have watched journey with Arnel live twice and those notes he sings are very challenging… it made us reflect on Steve Perry’s vocal issues. Arnel is one of the best vocalist I ever seen live and I have seen many many bands since the age of 9❤
I got an awesome Arnel at the last Def Leppard-Journey show. I thought Arnel had a better night than Joel Elliott. Total unnecessary beef, lets quash this and keep doing music. "dam social media"
I think what they may be referring to volume. Wise is the fact that perhaps Arnel could not hear himself. Perhaps the IEM wasn't working properly? Just a thought. As a vocalist, If you cannot hear your voice, You could be all over the place. Is this what happened here? I dont know.
the singer has been great it is possible that his voice has seen its better days very hard to sing that music for so long. i think Neal Schon wants all the money he can get, maybe the singer should bail seeing the band is fighting over the money anyway.
Why is all this legendary bands creating this whole high school drama lately? Wtf . Is the government putting stupidity vitamins in our food or something?
Its common practice that the headliner sounds the best and loudest. You take some off the openers sound so you sound better. It's reality. But Arnels issue was just a bad monitor. Everything else is being blown up by the media.
Any musician who has played live knows that being an opener, some bands will diminish the house mix (volume and EQ) to make themselves sound better than the openers. It's common practice. The member most affected by this is always going to be the singer who is relying on the mix to know if he / she is in key and on time. If you notice he is holding his in-ear monitor during the clip indicating he is struggling to hear the mix. I haven't seen the whole show, and I wasn't there but considering Neil Schon has been playing live since before the members in AV7F were born, I think he probably knows what he's talking about.
All you had to do was go watch other clips from the past few years. He was amazing but has been struggling for a while. If I were him I would retire just to get away from Neal Schon.
Arnel's got nothing to prove lol. Him fvcking up one time doesn't mean he can't sing. He's been with Journey for years now lol. If he can't hit the notes more than he can then he wouldn't have been with Journey for that long
So so so so many bands out there that have existed for a substantial period of time have had huge meltdowns, both with other people and within their own band... Avenged Sevenfold has been around for 25 years and they've had nothing of the sort. The only member of the OG lineup that is no longer with the band is Jimmy, who they sadly lost in 2009. No creative or personal tensions have ever driven them apart, which is insanely impressive. The fact that they love each other so much after all this time speaks volumes of their character. Never once have I heard anybody, whether fans or peers, say anything negative about them.
After watching the A7X set even their audio seemed off - aside from Brooks' drums, he was killing it. If I'm not mistaken Shadows' mic was cutting off a ton, especially when he was far out on the catwalk. Gates' guitar definitely cut out a few times. With all the wireless signals flying around I wouldn't doubt their in-ears were also suffering. Sucks that anyone has to get blamed, whether it be Arnel, A7X, the sound engineers, etc. That stage is enormous, and that crowd was immense. There's bound to be any number of things going wrong simultaneously, but the show goes on.
As a singer, we have off nights and we stress over it before and during. I’m not in this guy’s league but know the feeling. He pushes and that is damaging over time. I still prefer a real singer over tracks anytime.
I love your channel, because you always talk great of bands and musicians. Arnel is a great vocalist and person, and I liked him since day one when he joined the band. It could have been the monitors or maybe even hoarse from all the touring. It happens, he's human. But at least he is really singing and the band is really playing and they aren't ripping fans off like so many bands these days are doing by lip syncing and using backing tracks. We love ya Arnel, please stay, and God bless you always too! Peace! ☮❤
I saw a journey live four or five years ago on the 4th of July in Provo Utah and Arnel sounded absolutely awesome! Every vocalist in existence has had bad nights and is on video having bad performances for one reason or another and it's not an indication that they are a bad vocalist. We all have our off nights, we all make mistakes sometimes, you just have to shake it off and move on. Hopefully he can get through this and keep making awesome music with the band. 🤘🏼😎
As a long-time member of many opening acts, I can tell you unequivocally that bands like Avenged Sevenfold absolutely do tell the sound guys that only the headlining act is to be turned up properly. They don’t want to be upstaged by an opener and limiting the volume of the other acts is one way for them to look better live. This is because psychologically people equate volume with quality. I know that might sound silly but it’s a well-researched fact.
That may have truth to it for bands on tour, but this is a festival. A7x may be the headliners but at festivals the sound quality does improve the bigger the band is, simply because they get the bigger and full on PA system. A7x would never do that to other bands in a festival setting...especially against a legacy soft rock band such as Journey.
Looking closely, he has in ear monitors in, there could be nothing coming through the P.A and it wouldn’t affect his ability to hear the band in his ears and hit his notes… Dude found an excuse in Avenged Sevenfold and is running with it 💀
So big deal he had one bad night doesn't mean everyone has to bash him Arnel is a wonderful great singer you're right not every night you going to have a good night you're going to miss to hit the high notes sometimes cuz your voice is worn off on the other night big deal give him a break
What's with these old artists trying to stay relevant and blaming everybody else when things don't work out? Give it a rest. There's a reason you aren't with your original singer anymore and it wasn't just him.
Agree with your summary of the event. It’s so sad that Arnel feels so insecure. He’s obviously a killer vocalist. You couldn’t do what he does for so long and not be killer. Neil Schon is cookie
Arnel is OUTSTANDING. He is talented, energetic and his interactions with the crowd is amazing. I love that guy. He is an elite vocalist. Between the piercings, his full arm tats , the way he dresses. Omg he is HOT AS HELL!
If you listen to the clip there's no problem with the volume. The only thing I will say out of experience is that sometimes the band can't hear other members through the stage monitors while they're playing the set. I don't know if that's what he meant, but the volume to the crowd was fine. And he did sound a little bit off on the chorus
For me maybe he only not filling well on that day or he really couldn't hear himselft. And Arnel is my fathers friend also band mates in the Philippines before he became Journey. So it's just a bad day for him we all don't know. But hope his felling well❤
Neal works his band like slaves. Steve Perry was right to leave and his first replacement quit after the first tour because of the impact it was having on his physical health in singing those songs on a grinding tour schedule. Why does Neal do this? He makes bad choices in women that costs him big bucks and he refused to learn or modify bis lifestyle.
So, was it Avenged Sevenfold's problem when Arnel sounded like crap at the Def Leppard/Journey/Steve Miller concert in AZ? It couldn't have been the volume...because Deen Castronovo sounded great on the one song he was able to sing. Folks who had never seen Journey all around us said...why isn't the drummer singing? Having seen Journey as far back as when Greg Rolie was the singer-we were hoping for a great show for our daughter to experience Journey. That didn't happen. For $280 per ticket, we expected more....
I’ve got nothing but respect for A7X. This year at Rocklahoma, a massive thunderstorm rolled through that effectively cancelled half the first day. They were the closer for that night and decided to stay an hour after their set was done to give the people more of a show since the day had been so miserable Will definitely be going next time they are in Dallas
A7X have absolutely no reason to sabotage Journey lol. At this point, Avenged are one of the biggest bands in the world, they sell out tours all over the world every year, they are bigger than Journey - and I am saying that as a fan of both bands, I’m not biased here. They have nothing to gain from sabotaging anyone lol
Arnel is trying to sing and keep up with literally one of the top 50 vocalists ever. Steve Perry is nearly impossible for anyone to replicate. So Arnel is doing a damn good job !!
I feel like there has to be a certain level of maturity reached at some point where you realize…. Shifting blame, drawing attention, or fighting to hopelessly defend your reputation… only makes matters worse… the most professional thing to do is let it roll off your shoulders, don’t take it personally, and just keep moving forward… Steve Perry and M Shadows are very humble guys… I know this new guy is a bit weird (don’t know much about him) the point is… it’s a live show… your gonna have moments like this where things don’t always go according to plan. You just gotta roll with it… keep it professional and take in the good with the bad… I mean… your musicians…. There’s allot worse things that could happen than one bad set… Ask Metallica… I’m sure James would agree.
I was there and in fact the sound had issues. Volume was kinda low from the start, i feel like they brought it up a little during the show, but you could visibly see Arnel holding in his ear and gesturing to the sound man to raise it. Arnel had some off-notes, yes. But overall it was a good show, the full picture is far better than a short clip could ever do it justice. Not only Arnel but the whole band played it with high energy, so it was enjoyable. That said it's a weird decision from Rock in Rio to have Journey in the lineup in the same day as A7X and Evanescence. Journey is not nearly as popular in Brazil as they are in the US... Most of the crowd were there to see the other bands. They could sing along to Don't stop believing but that's pretty much it.
You can't say headliners have 'nothing' to do with it. It is so common these days that all of the openers sound bad compared to the headliner. Production limiting has to be a thing.
When I was in a Breaking Benjamin's concert back in 2018, the vocalist, Burnley had bad flu but he apologized for his poor throat condition to the audience in advance on the stage and they finished their 1 hour show somehow. Even though the show was not perfect, Burnley and the band respect their fans at least. This is how a professional band doing to their fans. The Neal guy is a freaking clown.
I think, based on his comments on different issues over the past couple years and threatening to quit the band, Arnel is a lil sensitive and his butt is easily hurt. I think all of us who are musicians know other musicians like this. You are absolutely right about musicians being their own worst critic. I certainly am. I wondered if maybe Neil was talking about the stage sound being limited so that Arnel couldn't hear himself or the band and was causing problems hitting notes. I know if I can't hear drums, guitar, or lead vocals on stage, it can play absolute hell on my co-lead & backing vocal or bass performance. You don't know if you are out of tune or in time... it sucks.
I dig Neal Schon and Journey. However, I do recall a time in the late 70s that someone on Journeys crew messed with the sound boards and tanked Van Halens set.
He's not that bad, bad monitors and all kind of reasons make that happen. Sound Check is really important, and if SOUND has your mix effed up, it can create all kinds of problems. I know myself if the music is even slightly too loud and I cant hear myself, my voice does terrible because I have no frame of reference for where my voice is, thats why a lot of singers stick their finger in their ear to try and hear the vibration of their voice, but even that cant be heard if its TOO LOUD. You just end up sounding like an idiot. If he wasnt good journey would never have let him join, period. Dude Rocks. This happens to the BEST of them, even Billy Joel has had these problems where he could only hear his echo but not his voice singing the national anthem in a stadium, how stressful
I've seen them live, they put on a great show! Yeah he's a really good vocalist he sounded spot on, things happen we're human. At the end of the day the guy is a very good vocalist probably had a lot going on, maybe had a cold or strained his voice before hand. He's a good fit for the band hopefully he doesn't leave the band after that.
As a musician, it so important to hear. What if the Avenged Sevenfold Crew denied Journey any signal feeds from the main PA and that affected the possibility to have a good mix for their in ear monitors? Then if that is the case, then it is the Avenged Sevenfold Crews fault, not the band.. In your video clip, Arnel is singing off key like he cant hear..
That's a tough gig for any singer and especially at Arnell's age. He's allowed to have an off night on occasion because that dude has brought it every single show for many years

I am right here with you.

He couldn’t hear. Festivals can be hell for monitor engineers.
Ya but they are using ear monitors 🤷🏻♂️
@@dr.darkroomThat doesn’t change anything. In ears if anything when they’re off are WAY WORSE than wedges. They’re extremely finicky and require a lot of setup and tweaks. At a festival you usually don’t have that, especially if you’re not the headliner.
@@KickflipGnasty WTF? This guy is accusing someone ELSE of not knowing about in-ear monitors?? "typically ear monitors are for hearing other instruments". UH NO. For vocals the vocal channel is obviously the most important for a singer. You can't sing on pitch if you can't hear yourself.

He needs to hear that one song that goes something like "Don't Stop Believing"
His in ear monitor must have not been turned up high enough. Unless he doesn't use in ears which is his problem!

But if journey played FIRST! How is Avenged Sevenfold to blame if they weren’t even on yet? 😂
Soundcheck
Let’s be real, this is about Avenged Sevenfold being the headliner and non-journey.
@@brandonshuttleworth8374Exactly. Aggression and antagonism are almost always rooted in jealousy and envy.
Its common practice that the headliner sounds the best and loudest. You take some off the openers sound so you sound better. It's reality. But Arnels issue was just a bad monitor. Everything else is being blown up by the media.
You don’t have a clue, do you?😂😂😂😂
Both are great AMERICAN bands which I love…let’s stop hating on each other & kick ass
Journey and A7X need to get along both are great bands
Love your channel man, thanks.
As a singer, we have off nights and we stress over it before and during. I’m not in this guy’s league but know the feeling. He pushes and that is damaging over time. I still prefer a real singer over tracks anytime.

Neal has become a joke. Dudes one of my favorite guitarist ever but him and his wife are disgusting
Avenged Sevenfold would never do that.
Looking closely, he has in ear monitors in, there could be nothing coming through the P.A and it wouldn’t affect his ability to hear the band in his ears and hit his notes…
Dude found an excuse in Avenged Sevenfold and is running with it 💀
It’s crazy that this happened. I went to see them, Steve Miller Band and Def Leppard in August this year in San Francisco. Arnel was fantastic.
Why is Journey opening for A7X anyway?
Lol right how do you go from watching journey perform to avenged sevenfold? They are not similar at all
They dont open, the first band was paralamas after journey, Evanescence at least avenged sevenfold.
Agree with your summary of the event. It’s so sad that Arnel feels so insecure. He’s obviously a killer vocalist. You couldn’t do what he does for so long and not be killer. Neil Schon is cookie

If you listen to the clip there's no problem with the volume. The only thing I will say out of experience is that sometimes the band can't hear other members through the stage monitors while they're playing the set. I don't know if that's what he meant, but the volume to the crowd was fine. And he did sound a little bit off on the chorus
1:27 As you say, sometimes they don’t hit the exact note which only proves they’re not miming. 🤘🏻
For me maybe he only not filling well on that day or he really couldn't hear himselft. And Arnel is my fathers friend also band mates in the Philippines before he became Journey. So it's just a bad day for him we all don't know. But hope his felling well❤
I don’t think A7x had anything to do with that kind of decision of db level or set control. As for arnels voice it’s just fine

Saw Journey about a year ago. Lifelong fan from the 80s and was always skeptical of their new singer. He kicked ass. It was a great show.
Headliners putting a hard limiter on the PA for openers is extremely common.
Arnel is trying to sing and keep up with literally one of the top 50 vocalists ever. Steve Perry is nearly impossible for anyone to replicate. So Arnel is doing a damn good job !!

A limiter doesn’t really make things quiet, also it’s common to use a limiter on the master bus.

Journey against avenged? No competition once so ever. Journey go home, way past your time.
Neal just shows what an a’holle he is. Has been forever and ever 🤨

Dude just wasn't prepared. We've all been there!
Back in 2013 I believe I saw two shows of the Ghost, Deftones, and A7X tour. A7X absolutely had Deftones volume turned down on both shows.
You don't know if you are out of tune or in time... it sucks.
I'm not sure if youre in the deathbats club but hoping to see you in cali next month! Would love to buy u a drink
Neal is a tyrant and Journey is a laughing stock.
That's a tough gig for any singer and especially at Arnell's age. He's allowed to have an off night on occasion because that dude has brought it every single show for many years
