Browsing new contents just after waking-up and now I want to swap my morning coffee for a Paper Plane. You know you master your bartender art when you're able to make someone want a cocktail at anytime, even in the early morning.
Just made this using Birddog 7 year old straight bourbon 88 proof. Very pleasant easy going cocktail 🍸 👌 You could taste each component without loosing anything in the mix. Love the equal part drinks. Particularly late into the session.
I finally got the amaro nonino and aperol, using Evan William's bourbon. Had this drink for the first time just now and gotta say it's pretty awesome. First I taste bourbon and lemon, then the nonino blends Into the aperol with a light finish, very nice.
I recently tried making a 'Four Corners' from Sam Ross' Bartender's Choice app (the drink was created by one of the bartenders at Attaboy) that reminded me of his Paper Plane: Four Corners 3/4 oz Applejack 3/4 oz Aperol 3/4 oz Cointreau 3/4 oz Lemon Juice It was quite delicious! I used Laird's Applejack, which I found out later is only a mix of apple brandy and neutral spirit, and after further research I found that most use Laird's Bottled-in-Bond Apple Brandy. I suspect that would bring a stronger apple flavor, but the regular Applejack felt slightly closer to a bourbon, so reminded me of a Paper Plane. In any case, I highly recommend it to Paper Plane fans.
My first attempt at a Paper Plane I had no amaro, so I subbed benedictine and it was great. It tones down the bitter and pushes up the sweet. My girlfriend won't drink it any other way.
I had this one for the first time, and wasn's so convinced. I thought the Nonino doesn't really give this Cocktail the necessary amaro note so I tried it with Jägermeister (has a bit more character) and I must say, with Jägermeister, this is going to be one of my favorites. Thanks for this video.
Came up with a version of this which I called The Angry Pilot! It’s yum 20ml Angostura 5 Yr Rum 20ml Amari de Angostura 15ml Aperol 5ml Angostura Bitters 20ml Lime Super Juice
I gave this a like because this channel is awesome, but please, please adjust this recipe to AT LEAST 1-1.5oz of bourbon and just a squeeze of lemon juice and your welcome..this has become probably my favorite cocktail over the last 2 years and was my featured drink at my wedding in 2018. Once people discover this drink they usually friggin love it, enjoy, cheers everybody.
Does the Corpse Reviver No. 2 predate the Last Word? I always thought that was the 1:1:1:1 template but maybe I was just subconsciously going for the one with a shorter name.
As far as I know the Last Word predates the Corpse Reviver #2 but we can only go by when these drinks were published. The Last Word appears in the early 1920's and the Corpse Reviver #2 was first published in 1930 (Savoy Cocktail Book) that's not to say that Harry Craddock wasn't making it before 1930 though so who knows. They're basically in the same era of cocktails. This may be a chicken and egg thing. Maybe we should tweet at David Wondrich to weigh in on this.
I know you probably already answered this so many times but still... your cocktails always fit in the glass so perfectly, i wonder what's the volume of that thing? I've got several types of cocktail galsses and I never get that awesome look, unless I do my cocktail like 1.5 or even twice as large as it should be...
Nikita GH this is a bit of an art and it took me a little effort to perfect but you need to consider how many ounces each drink Is plus dilution. For a 3oz drink I use a 5.5oz Libbey coupe or nick and Nora. The challenge is when using vintage glassware.
Patt Foad honestly my idea is that once you change an integral element in any cocktail it becomes a wholly different cocktail since the Nonino is a full 3/4 there are those who will disagree with me though for instance because Amer Picon is not sold here in the United States bartenders have recreated the Brooklyn with different Amari to equate the flavor of Picon and those cocktails are all still called a Brooklyn so I think this is a matter of opinion
Jesudian B definitely some Cuban Rum Havana club 3 year and 7yr and if you wanna slurge the reserve, I’d pick up some Amer Picon and find some other Amari not available in the US
I have a question that goes a little bit far from this cocktail in particular: how is the relationship between us bartender and aperol? I mean, here in Italy we don't have a so good relationship with him, but I see a lot of cocktail with aperol here, so I think that this is something that involves just us
In The US bartenders look at Aperol as a lighter sweeter substitute to Campari. It is used when we want a bitter Orange-ish flavor but Campari can be a bit strong. It does appear in a lot of drinks.
Delicious drink! Even when not shaken as well as you do here. I had it in a restaurant tonight and they opted for a giant ice cube, which I was skeptical of at first, but it melted only a tiny bit during my enjoyment of the cocktail.
Does Aperol taste better than Campari? Campari is absolutely brutal. Idk if its an acquired taste but its literally ome of the worst things i have tasted. And thats coming from a guy thats drank his own piss. Twice. By accident. Dont ask
Daniel Levy wow. Campari is sort of an acquired taste. Personally I love it. Aperol Is sweeter but very similar. This drink is anything but brutal tho by anyone’s metric LOL
Aperol is a citrus-based amaro that is definitely sweeter and easier on an unaccustomed palate than Campari. Aperol is a lot more refreshing than Campari, which is part of why it works so well with prosecco in an Aperol Spritz
I can see how Campari can come off as tasting like cough syrup. It also tends to get used in cocktails that emphasize it. Aperol's softer; when I started playing around with Italian bitters, it felt like Campari for beginners. It's not just less strongly bitter, it also more fruitiness.
Leandro you drop this on me like a bitch in the night. In Hawaii for work. Had a dream about you last night. (Yes, that’s how sad it’s gotten for someone I’ve never met despite living miles from you.) Fucked mate. Here we go. Paper plane.

Beautiful cocktail, I have also made a variation where i substitute 50% of the burbon with rum (1919) and it enhanced it for me.

Finally got a bottle of applejack this drink is fantastic
My first attempt at a Paper Plane I had no amaro, so I subbed benedictine and it was great. It tones down the bitter and pushes up the sweet. My girlfriend won't drink it any other way.
Sam Ross claims the drink is named after M.I.A. song of that named, which was playing as he created it.

Wow just had a chance to make this. Super refreshing and balanced. Well done.
What's unique about Nonino, compared to others like Averna, Ramazzotti, Cynar, or Montenegro?
Came up with a version of this which I called
The Angry Pilot! It’s yum
20ml Angostura 5 Yr Rum
20ml Amari de Angostura
15ml Aperol
5ml Angostura Bitters
20ml Lime Super Juice
In a pinch I’ve used Miletti instead of Nonino and it still comes out pretty solid.
Looks great! I’m going to get the few ingredients that im missing and evalute this cocktail myself! Cheers!
We don‘t have nonino at our bar but averna works quite well actually

agree... full one part lemon waaaay too lemony for my palate.
This is a great cocktail!

I thought that as well.

An Aperol drink that I've made at home:
The Agent Orange :-)
1 oz Aperol
1 oz Gin
.75 oz Lemon juice
.75 oz Simple syrup
1 egg white
Made this tonight. SO good!
A cheaper version of this cocktail Amaro replaced with Jägermeister works also really well.🙂 The review is 4 stars out of 5.👍
Where is your old fashioned video? I can't believe you haven't made one yet!
Check back in tomorrow :)
@@TheEducatedBarfly perfect timing! :)
This drink has such a nice colour! Sam Ross rules.

The Educated Barfly thanks a lot! I was afraid I underdiluted, but guess my 9-12oz martini glasses and coupes just aren't meant for classic cocktails.
I would absolutely love to have a drink with this guy. Seems super cool and feel like I could talk to him for hours
Come on by Cole's French Dip in Los Angeles.
@@TheEducatedBarfly I had plans for next next month but well..we all know that's not happening, but I will be there soon!
I can't seem to find Amaro Nonino anywhere. Can you recommend a good substitute that's more easily accessible?
There's one place in my country that sells it but it's like $90 for a bottle.
maybe just Amaro Montenegro
@@garrettjones4967 Love Montenegro. Don't know how it compares to Nonino, but I'll give it a whirl.
Just made one and it’s tasty! Have you tried it with Campari instead of aperol?
Is it possible to use something else in case you dont have the Amaro Ninino?
Late answer, but you can use Amaro Montenegro
A damn good drink. 🍹
Hands down my favorite cocktail....at least in the sour family.
Great cocktail! Have you thought about making a video on a High Fashion?
Now I have :)
Have you tried substituting the Aperol with Tempus Fugit Gran Classico? SO much better. You can feel the complexity walk down your tongue.
Not yet but sounds like I’m going to
Is it a paper plane if you use another amaro? I dont have nonino i have montenegro. It tasted great but im curious what the nonino brings to the table
Tried this out recently and gotta say I really love it! How about a series where you try out new drink recipes from the comment section?
I would love if you go out of focus while shaking drinks, it’s my favorite part!!! 😄
Random Travel Question: if you were visiting Italy, then which liquors/bottles would you bring back with you to the US?
Jesudian B definitely some Cuban Rum Havana club 3 year and 7yr and if you wanna slurge the reserve, I’d pick up some Amer Picon and find some other Amari not available in the US
What is a Nonino?
Fucking awesome. Love the name and the color.

Can you please make a cocktail of your choice that involves cream
Diego Hernandez yep
Golden Dream & White Russian are two of my favourites that utilise cream.
Anyone here from "we might be drunk" podcast with Mark Normand and Sam Morril? Pull it up . Quiff. I'm Kevin Heart
