Roger Craig Smith's Evolution as Chris Redfield (2009-2017)

- I had a lot of fun making my Alyson Court Evolution video that I've decided to make this a semi-regular series (maybe a new one every other week?) spotlighting my favorite RE voice actors and what they bring to the series. It's so frustrating when actors get replaced in this series that its made me appreciate these awesome, talented people even more. So here's to celebrating Roger Craig Smith as Chris Redfield! It took some time, in my opinion, for Capcom to truly nail Chris and bring in an actor that really brought him to life but goddamn did they nail it with Roger Craig Smith. When he's good, he's really good as Chris Redfield.
I left out his role as Curtis Miller in Degeneration on purpose. Was gonna include it and make the video a general evolution of his through the series but focusing more so on Chris made more sense to me. I also left out Chris/Roger from Mercenaries 3D and Rev2 Raid Mode because as far as I know, they just copy and pasted voice files from RE5 Mercenaries and Rev1 Raid mode respectively. Nothing new.

I didn't actually care much about Chris back in a day. I thought he was bit of a flat character. RE5 changed that. Roger Craig Smith brought some much needed depth and emotion to Chris. Because of him, Chris is now one of my favorite characters. Replacing him was terrible decicion.
I completely agree! While I do like his REmake voice actor, Joe Whyte, even then he still lacked the things you mentioned. It really does take the right actor to bring the depth and emotion to our characters and Roger Craig Smith did just that for Chris. His role in 5 and the pain, distress of losing Jill/finding her again was portrayed so well by RCS. Same in 6, when he really was off the rails/emotional/pissed off (and drunk lol) for most of the game, all done so well by RCS. The only time I feel like he was lacking was in Revelations but every character in that game was lacking. Its such a shame that Chris and Jill weren't portrayed well in that game (besides Chris still being Roger Craig Smith). They lacked the chemisty and emotion they had together in 5. Partly because of poor voice direction in that game and partly because of Jill's change in voice actor (Patricia Ja Lee was so good as Jill and should have returned for Revelations).
Bottom line, Roger Craig Smith is a fantastic Chris Redfield and him being replaced for Vendetta was such a baffling decision I will never understand.
Thanks for the comment!
I actually really enjoyed Joe Whytes performance in the REmake, but thanks to certain exclusivity deal, i played RE5 before i played REmake. Joe Whyte is not quite as good as Roger Craig Smith, but he definetly made me appriciate Chris even more. I think that his scenes with Hope Levy (Rebecca) in particular are really underrated. I loved how Chris behaved like a big brother when he was talking to Rebecca. In my opinion it was both natural and subtle.
I don't blame actors for shortcomings of Rev1. It just wasn't well written game.
I agree. There are a couple really great scenes between Chris and Rebecca in REmake. The whole Remake cast is very underrated in my opinion.
As for Rev1, I do agree with you it just wasn't a well written game. It tried to be so complex and try to pull off a big mystery but that aspect of the game fell flat on its face, for many reasons. Although, while I also don't really blame the actors, Michelle Ruff (Jill's voice actor in Rev) did an interview with Crimson Head Elder a year or 2 ago and said that she tried to bring more emotion to Jill but her and the voice director (who was Stephenie Sheh, Rebecca in Umbrella Chronicles/RE5 of all people) had their hands tied. The Japanese producers kept telling them basically, "No, no, Jill is a tough, hard character who never shows emotion." I'm paraphrasing on that but seriously, WHAT. Have they seen RE5, or certain scenes in Remake with Barry and Wesker?? I hate when producers take the characters being described as calm and cool under pressure to mean, emotionless robots. It really bugs the crap out of me because I so want the RE characters to be more fully realized and show their more human side (again, RE5 did that so great with Chris/Jill, and Rev just did not).
I would assume Roger Craig Smith was directed the same in Revelations cuz damn, going from 5 and 6 where he is very deep and wearing his heart on his sleeve to Revelations... wow. I definitely do not blame the actors in this case. I blame the Japanese producers who for some reason thought Chris and Jill are suppose to be robots and have always been that.
Really? Characters are the backbone of almost every good story, so producers made a huge mistake. They clearly didn't understand, what made Chris and Jill so awesome in previous games. Characters in Rev1 didn't bring anything interesting to the story. It's sad, because Rev1 had potential to be the best RE-game in a long time. I honestly think that Rev1 has the worst story in the series.
Even RE6 had better story in my opinion. Sure, the actual story was complete mess from start to finish, but at least there was few interesting character moments.
The Horror Inside “The only time I feel he was lacking in Revelations”
I disagree. Chris had this stoic composure of keeping his emotions in check lest he lose his cool with Jessica who clearly kept trying to tempt him away from Jill.
Also, Chris had this “keep calm and carry on” attitude when trying to find Jill. I’d argue that we see a lot more passion and pathos from Chris in RE 5 since he hadn’t seen Jill in years whereas they probably banged each other a day before they each got sent on their respective missions. Plus, it sounded like maybe that sort of thing happened to them all the time where one of them got in trouble, forcing the other to rescue them. In RE 1, I think I remember Chris rescuing Jill from some jail cell? Also, they clearly worked together and probably had to bail each other out during the time they took down Umbrella once and for all, a pre-RE4 event that should have definitely been depicted in its own epic full-length game instead of a mere crappy scenario in an on-rails shooter (RE: Umbrella Chronicles).
I like how Chris Redfield evolved into being Capcom's version of Captain America.
And he too was the voice of Captain America
@@AndersonTenecela - In LEGO games ("Marvel").
@@user-jt6mn9dw7b In the cartoons also
And Batman
Sonic too
Sonic did a good job voicing this guy, good job.
Agree my love he did sonic the hedgehog so lovely!💙🤗
Roger Craig Smith was the perfect voice for Chris. The other ones were okay, but he will be the only real Chris in my mind. Plus, he's an amazingly talented and versatile voice actor, too.
I also like Joe Whyte as Chris the REmake but RCS is a pitch fucking perfect Chris. I don’t care for any of the other Chris voice actors besides these two. I don’t care for RE 7 or 8 but Smith should so have been brought back for that. The fact they just re-used the VA who voiced Carlos in the RE3 remake for Chris in 8 is incredibly lazy
The way he says „Jill“ gave me goosebumps
Roger Craig Smith and Patricia Ja Lee were so perfectly matched!
The Horror Inside Totally agreed. Both have the perfect voices for Chris and Jill, Rogers voice is masculine and a bit rough and Patricia did such a great job in the scene where Jill is rescued by Chris, you can clearly hear every emotion of Jill right out of her voice.
Dude SAME. The way he delivers lines is so inspiring he’ll always be Chris to me
roger craig Smith was pretty good voice actor for chirs
Randy Kimberlin RCS was great. He really was given the chance to develop Chris over multiple games. Joe Whyte from remake also did an amazing job. I actually interviewed Joe and Heidi Anderson-Swan (voice of Jill) on this channels podcast.
yeah, not for Sonic lol
It is true
RE8 would have been perfect if he came back as Chris
Fax
Resident evil 8 isn’t the same without Craig...
Jeff Schine was a horrible choice. He didn't even try to sound different from Carlos.
I kinda like the grittyness re8 chris was
To think they didn’t bring him back for RE8
Capcom doesn't hire union actors anymore. They hire newbies now.
He is the best and only Chris Redfield. I love his voice!
So Do I. 🙂😊☺️
“It’s me Chris” no your Sonic the hedgehog
No your captain America
Oh god the voice acting at Piers' scene was AWESOME
This will always be the definitive Chris redfield voice for me
I miss his acting on Chris so much. It would be awesome to see he comimg back for Resident Evil 8; unfortunately thats not gonna happen.
I do too. He’s one of my favorite voice actors in the series. He definitely helped shape and develop Chris more than any others. *Sigh* Oh how I miss a certain era of RE voice actors: Alyson, Sally, Mercier, Ja Lee... if only they were still voicing them to this day.
@@TheHorrorInside why Capcom doesn’t call Roger anymore? Man .. Rogers voice was made for Chris :(
@@iFalloutAxl yup
@@iFalloutAxl Real answer, they really don’t care about their English voice actor consistently no matter how good they are. They let new producer every game make the decisions and often choose to go non union which RCS is not
@@iFalloutAxl Apex are paying him to be mirage voice actor, so hes kinda on a contract rn that's why
I can't get over how sexy and masculine his voice sounds
get back to the kitchen
This rings true in recent times with this character like when Piers asks him what happened to the legendary Chris Redfield, maybe he should ask Capcom.
I wish he voiced Chris in RE7 & RE8
Smith is in my book the best Redfield and I hope one day he gets the chance to play Chris Closing his book when we get to that chapter of Chris going out.
CABLE REDFIELD In a perfect world that would happen. I feel like Roger Craig Smith should get the chance to end Chris’ story. Sadly Capcom is recast crazy and who knows when they’ll actually properly end our characters’ story instead of wasting time
I think they have the guy who voiced Carlos in the re3 remake do Chris’s voice in re 8 :( so bummed cos RCS has the most legendary voice for him
Claire Monk It does sound a lot like him. If that’s true that’s so dumb. Reusing a voice actor you just used for an entirely different character. He also doesn’t sound like a good Chris from the little I’ve heard. Great Carlos, not feeling him as Chris
The Horror Inside hell no! I totally agree. He just sounds off:/ well honestly I’m just happy he looks normal again at least, brought back our favourite boulder punching, steroid injecting Chris instead of that douchey “Redfield” from 7. Not entirely sure what cap on was trying to do there lmao...
Roger Craig Smith is the perfect Chris Redfield.
I Totally Agree. 😌👍
4:30 Chris is a savage lol
🤣
His voice was the perfect match for Chris
I hope he will change his mind to returned again for the RE 5 Remake
Say what you want about Re5 and 6 but the voice work is some of the best in the series.
Honestly for me everyone did a fantastic on RE5 every voice sounds nice for every character
Ezio Auditore is the first thing that comes to my mind whenever he speaks
I miss that voice of chris in resident evil village
I just found out that Chris Redfield is Sonic The Hedgehog
This is the true chris
Wtf just realized over 10 years later he's me Kyle Crane
The one and only true definitive voice of Chris Redfield, Roger Craig Smith is the man 😁👍
I love you.chris ♥♥♥♥
I love you too roger 👍👍👍👍
That first scene with RE6 Chris made my brother and I laugh; I did shed a tear when Peirs died because it was like that movie when Bruce Willis shoved Ben Affleck into the pod.
He was Chris's little brother always checking him when he was a being a dick.
roger Craig is the goat voice actor for Chris red field it just suits him the best
Literally why wasn't he the voice for 8 🤦♂️
It’s really a simple, yet bs reason. They decided to go non union (which allows Capcom to pay for cheaper talent and overuse their labor). They also literally re-used voice actors from RE3 remake for 8 for different roles which was just another example of them being cheap. Believe me when I say you aren’t the only one that feels this way. I get so many comments daily on this video saying the same things you are. He’s still immensely popular as Chris.
@@TheHorrorInside thanks for explaining it in deep thought 😁 I feel a little better so you got a favorite Chris
@@phreshchipz As a spanish speaker, i can really difference between Roger and Jeff voices. Roger's voice is more noisy and charismatic and yeah for sure his voice fits perfectly in chris, in the other hand, Jeff's voice is way too unnatural for Chris, it's not even more that noisy voice or deep tone and the charisma that we know about Chris when he says a phrase, I'm not saying that it's a bad voice, I really liked it for Carlos, In the way that Capcom decided for Carlos was really accurate, Jeff's voice was fit in Carlos, making Carlos a more serious guy but taking away the charisma that we knew about him, and well is the same with Chris, both actual voices are unnatural, but at least Carlos was a real deal, a deal that wasn't an easy money deal in Chris. A short answer about all of this, it's like when your father got away from the fam but your mother brings a new guy to home, it's there your "dad" but it's not the feeling about that guy being the dad figure that you created about your real dad, same feeling with Jeff, Nobody will feel Jeff as Chris, because Roger is our Chris, and he'll be it forever.
There's a thing called "Resistencia al cambio" (Refuse to accept/ or change something), but definitely this is not the case, Capcom made a bad decision for Chris since Resident Evil 7, I'm ok with chris' face, but not with his voice, everybody needs Roger's voice.
Chris Redfield , Crane in dying light and Ezio Auditore Da Firenze!
Crane*
Man why did they change Leon’s voice actor from resident evil 4 he was perfect as Leon
He even voiced batman in arkham origins
Chris Redfield, the mega hero, that punches boulders, Chris Redfield the very best hero of Resident Evil, forever. LOL i mean it!
2:57 Kinda ironic to see Chris and Wesker on the same side lmao
Me: *Punches the shit out of nemesis.*
DO YOU SEE SOME STARS NOW!?
If anyone here wants to pick for him for the perfect voice of Chris Redfield in RE 5 Remake? BECAUSE I DO ✋
I love roger as sonic the hedgehog but he good with Chris redfieion it suits him in my opinion💙😊
best chris syncro ever
l like his voice 😘
Come back ”VIII”
Great Channel. Great content. Can't wait to see more from you man. Resident Evil is one of my top five games of all time lore wise. Love the lore and characters.
Keep up the fantastic job. 😄
RE5
Before voice acting Sonic he voice acted chris
4:08-5:23 He’s Sonic the hedgehog’s voice
lol he also voices sonic in sonic boom
꧁Kwjlヅ꧂ Always thought that was funny. My nephew loves Sonic so to hear him as Sonic is crazy. My mom watches that reality show, Say Yes to the Dress and he’s the narrator on that. Really bizarre to me lol
I hope they bring him back
My favorite voice actor from Resident Evil and most important as Kyle Crane most goated character ever
Requescat in pace
Still his remarkable moment was punching a boulder.
Write it Roser Craig but read it Chris Redfield😅 Roser your voice fits Chris Redfield very well and boosted his manything. Made him more tough and reliable.
Chris:Gotta go fast
Now is Mirage ❤
😂
Roger's voice in Chris reminded me very much to Batman in Arkham Origins. But not as Batman, more as Bruce Wayne actually.
Joe Whyte in the remake reminds me of Roger's Chris. I hate that in 8 Chris sounds like Carlos
Ezio
Resident Evil 5 & resident evil 6
Ezio vs Wesker
Sounds like Chris Redfield when performing him, sounds like a balding middle aged man when performing sonic the hedgehog
All that just to be replaced by carlos. Such a shame
Why do none of these people say Kyle Crane?
You forgot dying light
And instead we have shitty voice in dead by daylight... Why why and why?
He's great at voicing Chris, but he sucks at voicing Sonic.
