Cool the area Do a makeup trial with your makeup artist a few months before your wedding. I still don't know which product I reacted to, but we suspect the setting powder. Quick reminder that in the UK, hydrocortisone 1% is not licenced for sale to be applied to the face or any sensitive areas. Really should not be advising makeup artists to apply hydrocortisone to the face unless prescribed. Hydrocortisone has to be prescribed by a healthcare professional to be used on the face. Other countries' healthcare regulations may be different.
The pharmacy does not recommend it for the face. Hydrocortisone used on the face can also cause pigmentation issues (as a side effect) among other possible side effects. Hydrocortisone used on the face has a high side effect risk. If Dr V has a genuine UK MBBS degree or has practiced as a doctor - she should know this.
Oh my ! That was very scary ! Glad it cleared otherwise it’s so hard to deal a pigmented area due to allergy or any other cause ! N thanks to educate !
I’m dealing with this now, came on out of nowhere in may. I’ve been on 40mg prednisone a day plus 12 allergy meds/pills, the xolair shot once a month and 2 nasal sprays. Nothing but the prednisone is working, I’m still covered in hives daily and it’s getting worse. I’m not functioning, can barely leave the house, my face/body fills up with pockets of water, blurred vision, I lose my voice, it’s painful to walk or use my hands bc the swelling/water is so intense, the list goes on and on. I’m seeing a new regular physician and an allergist and neither know what’s going on or how to fix it 😭😭
Hi Dr it was probably Bismuth Oxyxchloride which is in most powder makeup products. I found out this the hard way over 10 years ago which I tried to use bare minerals fave powder foundation it’s loaded with it. After loads of steroids and discontinuing the product as well as any products that contain it my skin recovered. Fyi my skin reaacts negatively to niacinamide b3 as well 😢
Wow! Maybe you should take your own makeup and skincare with you. A makeup artist should be able to work with anything. Also always make sure their brushes are clean.
This happens to me at minimum 2-3 times a month but it’s not a reaction to any product. My cheek or cheeks will start turning 🍅 red and get bumps and be very hot to the touch and it feels like heat is radiating from them like a sunburn. My dr prescribed me 2.5% hydrocortisone and didn’t give any real explanation other than maybe heat rash as it happens a lot when I walk my dogs but it also happens when I’m on the couch or doing nothing at all. The more I look into it myself I wonder if it’s rosacea
I also just posted about the same issue There's something going on with our skin care that's changed and we haven't been informed We cannot keep going like this EVERY MONTH I'm exhausted 😢
I got scared and started saying no hyperpigmentation please . Like first statement that came from my mouth was that the melanocytes shouldn't be triggered. So happy that you are safe ❤❤.
Dr V, could you do a video on contact dermatitis. And solutions or precautions. I rarely use lipstick but few months back I started to react to lipstick so I stopped and started using tinted lip balm but I still got reaction. Is there a solution?
Was there EDTA, MIT or Formaldehyde in your makeup? You should check. The EPA has started to ban some of these chemicals in products... I'm highly sensitive to it and have a Chemical Awareness playlist if you're interest in figuring out what's in your makeup...
Hmmm Dr V buying Hydrocortisone OTC for your face is not recommended. Pharmacists aren't allowed to sell for that purpose. You need a prescription to be allowed to use on your face xx UK Pharmacist here
Oh my gosh thank you so much for this truly appreciate it, me and my daughter have urticaria, and I do her makeup for video shoots and sometimes she hives out we always have antihistamines on deck but not the cream thanks again ❤️🙏🏽💎
It's better to take our own product and clean brush everywhere and keep a small clean cup to put a small portion of product in there and use a brush, i mostly avoided any makeup because it will not suit my skin if anyone reuses it or the brush is not clean. I was having this fear, but this video scared me😢 oh god, but your precautions are awsome will take note of it
This happen to me when i was getting my prom makeup done, but i think its because the makeup artist brushes were not clean. I had gone to macys the day prior and brought chanel makeup so when i gave the makeup artist the makeup and noticed my left cheek was red and developed a face rash i knew it had to be her brushes.
Please just never apply that much hydrocortisone to your face! Also please consult your GP or pharmacist prior to using steroids on your face, it can have serious serious implications for your skin as it causes thinning
I applied multiple new products 24 hours before as skin care and then new makeup 12 hours before I got a reaction. How to identify what caused my urticaria? Mine took 1 week to go away and oral steroids.
I was looking at the make up kit on the table and it looked dirty and unsightly. I never share my make up kit with anyone I wash my powder puffs, foundation sponges and make up brushes regularly and dry them naturally for a week or more. So I buy 3's of all my make up tools. I also buy washable toiletry bags so I can clean them with water.
I get an inflammatory response to trauma to my skin from laser therapy, Botox injections and and micro needling. So I take a Zyrtec in advance and problem solved.
Urticaria had me in the A&E all day after it exploded ALL OVER MY BODY!!! They gave me steroids, paracetamol iv and antihistamines. I don't even know what triggered it. I took a shower and used Dettol soap just in case in the morning when I felt itchy but it was no match for the condition. I was also in pain because it made my allodynia so much worse. I don't know what to do.... I can't ice my entire body and I don't have hydrocortisone.
I get these after using vitamin c serum no matter how mild is it. Is there a remedy or some layering technique so that I can still apply vitamin c and get no hives.
Sometimes I tend to break into these ants bite like huge hives all over my body. Almost allergy like. I’ve had these about 6-7 times over these 5 years. I don’t know is causing them. It occurs all over my body even scalp, eye lids and my pubic area.
I have bad scar and hyperpigmentation from acid fly bite. How to heal hyperpigmentation which has already taken place? Hydrocortisone and allergy tablet didn't prevent the scaring as it was toxic acid burn.
My mother is getting acute urtracia 2 months ago.. So I thought its just due to the Food.. I see her you can get it triggered wirh stress or anything?? Idk now what to do if she gets trigger again
Hi Dr V, out of curiosity, why do you use this antihistamine rather than cetirizine? I've tried loratadine many times but it just doesn't work for me at all. Thank you
I had the area around my eyes got very red & itchy, started 2months ago, gone then it comes back. I don’t know if it’s something I’m eating or something in the environment. I threw away all my make up & started everything new, but still I get it now😭😢😫
It sounds like peri ocular dermatitis. Opt for skin care that is for sensitive skin and also fragrance free. Go on a diet that includes food with anti inflammatory properties. Eliminate triggering food for the time being.Cod liver oil and kefir could help improve the condition.

I have urticaria. It triggers on my hands due to extreme stress or weather conditions. Antihistamines help a lot!
Same ! Panic and heat
Same here .triggers on stress, anxiety, heat , even itchy clothes....I survive on antihistamines
I am 17 yrs old my skin turns white on itching and the itching basically happens in stressed, under sun conditions,do I have urticaria
