I had the priviledge to see Vadim Repin at the laureate concert in the Queen Elisabeth hall in Antwerp, just after the contest. By God, it was for me the first time I experienced an out of body experience. My seat appeared to be 0.5 m lower. 😅

I remember listening to the 1989 performance on the radio. Still brings tears about listening today. Incredible artist. And he had to pull, pull and pull this rather apathic orchestra throughout the whole piece... Russian soul and fire.

Yes, they are a rather lazy lot of bewilden musicians. Even an enthusiastic school orchestra could have gotten more inspired.....I think some of the fiddle players could well have missed their true vocation😢

Amazing performance. Both Vadim and his wife prima ballerina Svetlana Zakharova are the artists of the highest acclaim..

As magnificent to hear it in replay as it was in the hall in 1989! An iconic performance.

Magistraal en brilliant gevoelvol.(Wat een schril contrast met sommige violisten in het orkest!)

Astonishing. And the rest is history
I remember coming across a vid of another winner in the 80s, a Chinese pianist Wenyu Shen. He played Rach 3 and it was extraordinary. I wondered why I'd never heard of him. He ended up, back in China, making vids of himself playing in his basement. His father had terrible mental health and ruined his son's life. Early promise is not always a guarantee of artistic maturity.
