Hey! we ride TANDEM.... riding one-handed for us would be lethal, so I use a GoPro chest mount and occasionally a hand-held video, but my wife doesn't want to be in it or to do any B-roll so we are limited.... but then our rides are just recorded for our own records..... but not yet uploaded the Go-Pro footage. We are "The Tandem Channel" with about 3 subscribers (our kids!)

I only have a phone right now and while I was brainstorming a DIY situation with the accouterments I already have I first grabbed my Nite Ize waterproof phone pouch that has a lanyard. I adjusted the lanyard to be short and so I'll see how the Iphone wide lense works out in that! I loved all tips but I'll difinitely try setting up the camera somewhere and riding by!
yeay a new video!! yeah a puch for the cam is something ive been thinking about i had my dslr camera with me last summer but never took it out from the bag. something small and easy accesble is super nice! quadlock has released a camera kit mount (Mount that to a selfiestick) so if you have a iphone samsung pixel or huawei phone you might find a case for your model and you would get it really nice and tight.

I did multiple video sessions with each one having the camera at different shot angles on the bike. This doesn’t work for every situation but if you’re riding the same route each day it makes an interesting vlog.

Great video! Could you tell me which category you select to put a RUclips Cycle vlog under? The closest I see is Autos & vehicles or Sports, but nothing that really fits the cycling category specifically.

Apologies if you already answered this, but looks like you have the 4K Action cam, did you shoot in 4K and down sample to 1080, or just shoot natively in 1080? Also you didn't bother with the remote (Viewer) then? Great videos btw, really enjoying watching your adventures

Wow, not many vloggers reveal this concept which is often asked by many bike vlogging enthusiasts. I am one among them....
Plenty points here I would ask.
1. Yes, would like to know how to ride one handed as I am scared of losing balance and crashing which leads to broken parts of me and my equipment.
2. When you set up the camera and go back, there is a possibility of anyone by rider spotting it and stealing it (touchwood).
3. Recording Time vs Edited video time varies, so how to get ample battery time and memory storage.

Hi Vinaykumar! I was thinking of you as we made this video!
1. Definitely don't do it if you don't feel comfortable and know that certain bikes are easier to ride 1 handed. Twitchy road bikes with aggressive geometry for example.
2. I never worry about people stealing my stuff in general but we're usually filming those shots where there aren't a lot of people so no chance of it getting stolen really! In a city I might be more cautious.
3. Shooting 10-15 second clips usually works best (unless you want a timelapse or want to shoot an entire descent etc.). On a long tour with no access to electricity at all times, you do have to be cautious of battery life and memory card space but carrying extras can help that. Shorter clips also makes it easier to edit. It's something you have to learn (when to turn on the camera and when NOT to lol.) and it just takes practice.
@@radbikeadventure Thanks a lot, regarding long tours in a fairly remote places, I prefer taking a solar panel charger so that I can get free electricity. Good ones are available though.
We can't expect when we can spot a beautiful bird or a view, so yes need good co ordination.

California must be a great place to ride and live with the coast, the mountains and NPs. I guess being two of you, if you are both into filming, the possibilities to produce really good films is so much better. I know you cycled RTW but California and the wider US is pretty spectacular.

I have pretty much the exact same camera/vlogging set up. But i also recently added a 360 degree camera(insta360 onex) which i find great for bike vlogging! Because you don’t have to worry about framing at all. Just press record and in post you can change where and what you want to focus on since the camera shoots a 360 view. Endless editing choices. It really is freeing.
@Bike Tall Nice! I have thought about getting one of those on so many occasions! Just worried having to edit and choose the footage will be a pain. As in too much freedom! How do you find that process?
rad bike adventure this is true! Sometimes too many choices can be overwhelming. But the insta360 editing app is pretty simple and lots of fun.

haha, I'm using insta360 one x, but I just bought one x2 today. I'm struggling with the content of my riding video. I don't know what else I can record besides those similar roads I already filmed before.

I tried mounting the camera on the bike but it picked up too much road noise through the frame, have you a solution to that? Have you tried a separate microphone with the sony? Also as a viewer a definitely prefer watching chestmounts over helmet mounted film.
Hi Olof, good question. The mount has to be REALLY secure on the frame otherwise it will jostle and ruin footage and sound. We tried a few different mounts but found the K-edge provided the most secure fit. You can also get a small gimbal which would completely smooth things out. Putting on a wind muff also helps a LOT so I would try that.
I have used an external mic. One problem is the audio comes in really HOT. Off the bike I can move it away from me, but on the bike the wind noise is too much. Using a Wind muff with internal mic or just positioning the camera right (wo a wind muff) has worked best for me.
Hi, how do you edit the footage and how long do you suggest for each bit of filming ie is 10 sec the min shot to get something across and not make it too jumpy
Hi Stephen, I use Final Cut Pro X. And yes, each clip should be about 10-30 seconds (I've heard of a 5 second rule where you make sure you hold each shot for 5 seconds (holding it STEADY and fixed), then move and get your next shot, and the next, holding each for 5 seconds...I'm guilty of not doing this and it makes editing really difficult because you end up with a lot of movement and whipping the camera around).

Oh music. Where do you get your music. Right now I use RUclips Audio Library and it’s working for now but I’d like to find a site that I can download music without busting the budget. Triple Scoop and Premium Beat are awesome but too expensive.

The one handed technique might not work on some folded bikes depending on how small and thin their wheels are.
Good point. It also shouldn't be used on really rough roads when you for sure need two hands on the bars. Of course gotta use common sense when it is and ISN'T safe to use that technique 👍
I used the “one hand technique” often on while touring on our Brompton (Sony AS50, Osmo Pocket and even Sony RX100)

I dont vlog but j watch a bunch of them. Everytime i see the ride by screen i think. “They need to go back to get that camera”. There is this one guy that filmed the entire trip that way. Incredibly long days on a fat tire bike. Hundreds of shots hundreds. I think that they are nice but for me not necessary. Maybe one or two.
If you like riding you should vlog go for it... Just film that's what I do on one big 36 inch wheel it's fun... Great pointers here from this video.
The Samsung is on Auto, I read the manual setting is difficult.

Nobody will agree with me but I think a great tip, unless you're getting paid/sponsored to produce content, is don't hop off your bike all the time and set up a tripod and do a ride by and film everything ever etcetera. Never take the risk of ruining your actual memory of a trip by turning it into a race or a film project. Unless you're in a documented race or getting paid to make content :D lol
It's a fair point! I'd usually only make the effort when it was a really beautiful scene and I wanted to have saved that shot for later. It doesn't ruin the trip for me, but it does change it. Now that we have more of an audience I'd be more likely to stop and set-up in order to capture and share the moment. Just the action of stopping to film something special actually helps solidify the memory too tho there's an extra perk :)
