We team up with @YCImaging to find out if it's really possible to do a no budget no prep music video in 4 HOURS.
You've heard the story before, an artist you really love agrees to shoot a music video with you only to find out that they have no budget and need to get it done this weekend? Is it possible to make something high end? Can you still make a cinematic music video with good lighting, camera direction and locations?
Well to find out we teamed up with Chrys from @YCImaging to shoot a no prep, no budget, no location, minimal gear music video at Art Factory Studios with local New Jersey rapper Trillionaire Daz. We ran into a lot of challenges and one big surprise that you'll have to watch to find out!
Check out the full music video and great filmmaking educationals on Chrys' RUclips channel:

No budget - pulls out a light the size of the moon...
Anyway good tips, thanks :)
LMAO, I was thinking the same thing. I got a budget yet no light the size of the moon!
well, if you're already in film making, borrowing some from friends (like he did) is feasible and still counts as no budget.
He also used gimbal and spot lights and so on🙁
Haha, good one 👈🏾
It says "on a budget" not "no budget". Big difference. You can rent that light for like $50.
No budget needed. Just a location reserved for the shoot, various pro lights, pro cameras, other misc gear, a car, parking and other misc expenses, plus the talent of course. Assuming as well you own a video editing PC + software and gear to handle video storage, etc. Otherwise no budget needed at all, only a few years worth of experience and skills shooting videos like this.
Easy as pie. Just do it.
After you have made your music video, don't forget that you need an ISRC # embedded into the master file in order to earn royalties! & Yes - you can earn royalties from RUclips videos! not to forget the security guy who saved the day :-)
Networking is key
Right lol, you only need gear that takes years to acquire. In the end, networking wins? You may not end up paying cash for what you need, but you will make a trade for trade on something, like exposure. And how the hell do you get a location like that with no budget lol.
Lmao it’s filming the video with no budget not having no equipment. I have my own equipment but artist come to me and want a video for 100 bucks. Like what could you get for the video to make it dope with 100 and not get paid for it is basically what they are tryna pull of but with 0 dollars for the artist.
#tips music video
1. Flip Your Location
-(3-8 Sets)
-look for leading line. Scout for leading lines
-symmetry. scout for symmetry
2. Lighting
- hard light from behind
- forget the fill
- Color & Visual Interest
3. Camera tip
- Push in & Pull put
- Shoot handheld
- Shoot parallax
well said mate. A+ !
@@indymogul on those 3 shot types, do you do the whole track in each shot method and then edit together after?
good man
yes indeed
@Aran Rasekhi unnecessary
push in & pull back is only possible with a decent gimbal or?
I think the difference between the old Indy Mogul and the new Indy Mogul is that the old Indy Mogul expected that you probably had a camera and maybe a light or two. New Indy Mogul expects you to have a camera, a gimbal, a few $1200 lights, a four man crew, and a 5000 super cool warehouse available.
I mean if you are serious about filmmaking, you probably gonna buy gimbal and some lights anyway. So those tips are actually very useful.
You want everyone to do videos on fucking iphones? Rent if you can't afford to buy.
To add, that warehouse is apparently known to be empty most of the time, so you can rent it out for very cheap afaik.
@@skylegendgaming in nj though? you're looking at the same price as a lens for a rental for however long they shot there at least.
Even as an amateur-mom-with-only-an-iphone11, I’m taking these tips bc I have a teen with a heart ❤️ the size of one ☝️ of those giant lights and talent the size of that super cool warehouse! Thanks 🙏.
So fire man, love how this came together!
Thanks for coming out, YCImaging! Can't wait to work with you again in the future.
YCImaging dope work YC let me know when your in New Orleans. I got spots you can use.
So dope! Y'all killed every thing, super insightful 🙌🙌🙌
Hey, I recognize that guy.
YC is low key a genius
Was expecting like a Canon Rebel and walking around the streets... Great video, but not sure I'd call it "No Budget"
Michael Pohl you don’t like Canon Rebels lol?
Tip 2: Don't focus on the camera you're using
@@pdot3972 It's more likely that people with no budget for an expensive production are using something cheap like the Canon Rebel series, so as viewers seeing the title of this video, we expected to be taught strategies for using a cheap camera and maybe some mediocre lights to get an acceptable result. Using expensive gear like these guys have absolutely disqualifies this as "budget."
@@shredforceone do you understand how expensive music videos tend to be? Between crew, equipment, and everything else? Between that and this, this is definitely a budget music video.
I think the budget video is use whatever you have like these guys did. Wonderfull job 👍👍
Ted, so great your involved with this channel. It’s exactly the spark that’s been missing lately
Dope Dope!
Yooooo
Yo I was ECSTATIC when my professor started playing one of your videos in class
D4Darious are also part of this amazing series?
ayee -- much love man
Darious!!
No budget- Uses 5000$ Camera...
No budget is during the shoot.
But before the shoot, u still need a budget.
You cant rent gear like this for only a few hundred dollars.
Did you think they would be shooting on an iphone?
Facts 💯
Chester Ahgren just use a phone. if not rent things.
Its on a budget
Yeah I could have used this info years ago when I shot my first music video. Will definitely keep these tips in mind for the next one!
I'm loving this series, informative and positive while still keeping it real. I find at least once an episode I'm like "YUP that's exactly how it would go".
Knew YC since he was in high school and watched him develop. I've always been a fan and still is. He is someone to learn from. It is great that you teamed up with him.
Step one to filming without a budget: buy all the gear ahead of time.
Wow! I thought it was YC Imaging based off the thumbnail! To see Indy Mogul and YC Imaging doing a collab is AMAZING😭😲🤯 Now lemme grab some popcorn and watch this video🍿🍿
Amazing! Chrys really knows his craft and made a good video with no prep & very little equip & that takes a lot of skill, talent, knowledge, and imagination.
Dude those new video ted are just straight fire, amazing job!!!!
Ok Ted you rocking this channel love the content.
thanks man. hosting IM is definitely a huge pair of shoes to fill. But we're doing it the best we can. :)
MANNNN!!!! TED!!! You are a breeze of fresh air @ Indy Mogul. Keep it up!
This entire video is so good. Add in YC and its basically the #1 video all RUclipsrs need to watch to get inspired.
You guys are killing it with this relaunch!
I'd love to see a separate video on the editing process.
Yes. I want to see editing a music video!
This helped me so much, thanks!
You don’t even know how happy I am that Indy mogul is back. These new videos are great!
Hey Ted. I’ve only caught a few of your Indy Mogol vids so far, but have to say that I am digging it all. Digging, your vibe, the professionalism, the fun challenges.
Keep it cracking
"Dont focus on the camera youre using" "yesss, yess, yess"

This video was simply amazing. Full of value and incredibly inspiring. Thank you! 😊

So many valuable lessons to learn from this. Namely, one person's blunder is another person's opportunity. Talking about seizing the moment. Good on the fill in artist.
Love it! The artist cancelling at the last minute is the icing on the cake. Super helpful video ideas.
We also shot a music video on a budget for a good friend. Our equipment: 5DM3, a tripod, crane 2, and 2 cheap battery-operated led lights. Basically shot in selected public locations. The biggest expense was probably a hotel room he wanted to splurge and stay in anyway. The car was owned by a friend, and we shot on the spot with me hanging from the back of a pick-up for it 😂😂😂 Uploaded a BTS of it if anybody's curious (video has english sub) 😁
Came for the warehouse, stayed for the Chris/YCImaging.
Thanks Ted! Always enjoyed ur aputure vids.
Super dope video! The lighting effect you guys pulled off with the homies in the back was really creative
7:19 *the infamous wilhelm scream!*
I cant get over the fact that you sound like Barack Obama
more people should like this comment
Lmaoooo
Makes it hard to watch the video!
My thoughts exactly. Dude sounds like Obama! Super cool! Thanks for the videos man!
M M 😂😂
Respect for collabing with YC!
Thanks for your insight. I needed this for my next project.
AMAZING. All of it!
This is the best indy mogul has ever been TBH
Truly.
The background shadows dancing was really nice. Came out pretty dope
you have empowered me; thank you! The creative juices are flowing, and i'm excited to bust out the camera and take action!
not entirely sure this is completely no budget, but still really helpful anyway 😂
This video should have been called "How To Make a Music Video With No Planning" and not "on a Budget"! Still an interesting video none the less.
Love it. Packed with useful pointers. Much appreciated.
This video is sick always love seeing the behind the scenes creative process
Ycimaging is the Goat!
In other words, No budget? just call all your rich friends with expensive gear and expensive warehouse and you are good.
I've seen the outcome and dang it was so good for a limited time and budget. Kudos to the editing too.
I've been making extremely low budget music videos for years with varying results as far as exposure. I've been happy with the results creatively.
Trillionaire Das: I'll be there in 17 minutes.
Now that is an entrepenuer!!! 😎😎😎
The hustle of it all.
This was filmed at Art Factory Studios in Paterson, NJ.
Totally awesome place. Shot one there recently too
10:55 that shadow effect is dope!
loving the new videos. great job guys!
Okay, I enjoy the new episodes but there's something I have to point out here: this is not a no-budget shoot because the location, your camera rig and your lighting equipment are pricey. You already have access to all of them but most budget filmmakers don't. I felt the same with the background projection video, where you bought a cheap projector and then tossed a bunch of expensive lighting equipment in a definitely-not-free-studio to get the full effect.
For me a no-budget shoot (pretty much every production I do) means no good locations and lighting everything with four CFL softboxes. I don't even have enough sandbags or extension cords for all four lights.
Oh snap, YC Imaging!
????
Bro, fantastic video. Love YC content, great collab and most importantly advice!
Love your videos and how you brought YC in to show us all how its done
look at all that professional minimal gear. it's good to have low budget with high end gear - LOL
no budget ... DJI Ronin come in
Spike Graphics lmao!!!! lad
So much good content here. Keep this up guys. Love it.
Love YC, he's got a good personality. I just shot my first hip hop music vid last month, but I've been learning from him for a long time.
Thanks for the video, Some great advice / tips!
So, how much was the rental at the studio? You said several times "...no budget..." but I'm guessing the studio cost something. Thanks Tim :)
Fatcalf Media that warehouse in Hoboken doesn’t really have many people in it using it. I use to do play rehearsals there with my crew and very few times did we actually have to book... could just show up.
This relaunch of the channel is a dream come true
So it did die, thought I was crazy.
This is amazing! I'm working toward becoming a filmmaker specifically for music videos, and this vid just filled in a whole bunch of blanks for me :) Thanks a bunch homie, your content is FIRE
You guys are great! Thanks for the advice!
I'm going to use a $45 smartphone
Hi, I'm shooting my first music video for an artist and this video has been so informative, THANKYOU!!!
One question. What frame rates are best for music videos? I'm thinking 24fps for the artist singing and 60fps for selected clips for slow mo?
Maz Nieviarovski yes you got it right, then edit and render your project in 24fps
Where do you even find artist to work with
This channel relaunch is killing ittttttt
This is what I call a great video. Super educational and fun to watch.
You forgot to explain how we get a good location like that with no/low budget LOL 😂
"If you're good at something, never do it for free"
-Joker
"You've $5 Budget, Let's see how to do it"
-Indy Mogul
so awesome to see this collab
Love @YCImaging! He has great videos and tutorials! And of course, I'm a long time Indy Mogul fan. Thanks for this guys! So helpful.
Niiiice
Chris is everywhere these days..Awesome Mogulism...
Most definitely is man
So this is definitely the Art Factory in Patterson, NJ. Did a shoot there back in October and it was a really awesome location. Unlimited potential and the catering is damn good.
THANKS FOR MAKING THIS VIDEO IMM LOVING IT!
Whats the name of that big softbox?
fr
Y'all used way more equipment than the average photographer would have access to. You should have used a nice camera and 2 or 3 work lights from Lowes, that's low budget. Y'all up in a loft with lighting equipment that most people have never seen before ... Y'all should've filmed out in the street under sun light thats even more low budget! Also it was too much going on in the video, only studio gangsters do all that it there music videos. Should've had more of a street look to it. Looks kinda fake when you put it in perspective ...
😁really 😎
There u go waiting on your video u just described😄
That's my man....
Ycimaging...he is a big inspiration
You can do it and I’m about to with the help of you guys , so thanks!
I guess this gives "no budget" a whole new meaning: just a few thousand on equipment, a small crew of assistants, location rental...unless they broke-in, and travel expenses.
👋🏿🙄😞😔🙄😞😔🙄😞😔👎🏿
There's nothing low budget about this when you're mentioning 1000+ worth of equipment. Gimbals and expensive light gtfoh
I'm saying
They needa retitle the video
That's very misleading 🙄😒
its not hard even if you just have a camera. just go out find spots and film with what YOU have. you don't need much besides a camera, natrual lighting, and a pc with editing software. quit looking up videos on how to do something and go out and do it.
And a low budget car could still sell new for $14,000. But noooo!! It should be a $300 car right? THAT's low budget, right!!
Low budget doesn't mean AS CHEAP AS POSSIBLE.
@@jonothandoeser Thank you for saying this. People in the comments are wanting things for 20 dollars. Sorry it don't work like that.
facts and he had to rent those spaces in that building i use to hang there alot
You guys are really helping out the culture of directors 💯💪🏾
I'm digging the shadow shots 👍
People love to over light the shit out of anything. TV is the worst. Nothing can be dim. Even a "pitch black" scene lit with torches is lit with a dozen light sources from every angle and a blue filter. Because rooms turn bright blue when the lights go off. For me "fantastic lighting" replicates how something would look in the environment shown to the audience. When I know people only have one dim bulb over their heads in an enclosed space. It totally throws me off seeing light sources from three other locations removing shadows from their face.
When I see someone singing in a big budget music video in an old church for example. Dramatic shots of pale light creeping through stained glass then person in said church, lit completely differently to anything else. I just think it looks fake. It looks photoshopped, badly. The best images come from badass locations being dressed to appear on film how they do in life, or exaggerate an aspect of it. Not creating a photo studio on every single set in the world to remove all of natures lighting "imperfections".
the gear plus transport and this location was not free this shoot cost $3000-$4000 min editing alone is another $1000 min $5000 for a music video is cheap but above many artist budget
I dont agree
1.) Dont try to be a "one man army" ! ....ask your network if you ask 4-6 people who are in the interest of making film/video there should be 3 lights and a couple of stands.
2.) I was involved in a shoot wherewe got a full equippet van from a rental house for free, because it wasa charity-projekt... the only thing is you have to give them a safety-fee of 5k euro, which you get back after reciving the stuff back.
3.) Dont know exactly but 3 ligths and a couple of stands should not be morethan 600euro a day in rental....but the safety-fee
It only depends on your ability to work with stuff you get, and not only the stuffyou wishyou had to hand...just my opinion.
@@felixxmu1967 i was speaking about this video shoot .
1 example the lights these are not 110v
you cant just run around gonzo with 5000w+ of lights
i am sure if you were a film student you could do it for less
i just priced what i saw
even with your safety-fee you still need to have 5K to start ..
and if your working with untrained "friends" for free
it might cost you more than that.
you need director / grip/ light guy / sound guy (4 people min)
who is watching the gear??? who is watching the truck ..??
are you on the first floor ?? how many locations (teardown/setup) ??
that is min $2000 just to pay 4 people you can trust
also don't forget your permit $600-$1700
cause if the cops get you they can seize your gear and fine you way more than that
What a great video, thanks so much! Utterly enjoyable, practical and realistic.
Praise God! Yes sir! This is great thank God for that! God bless all y'all fam.
Shout out to our artist Trillionaire Daz for saving the day, let's blow up his channel! 🙏 ruclips.net/channel/UC3XsRrFqy2mRyo09mpKZN9Q

shout out to The Art Factory! great location
Filming a Music Video on a Budget - easily £8000 equipment used if not more! lol
they dont own it i guess...
learning a lot - great videos, each is better and more educational than the next
This was one of the first video I've learned from. After a year of filming, I finally understand that nothing will go as planned. So i'm coming back to this video to show some love and that I understand you. Thank you! XD
no budget, no scouting yet manages to find a location with 2 big rooms. people would be paying a lot of money for locations like that. but good video still
"minimal gear"
Love this channel!
Thank you, thank you thank you!!! EXCELLENT info!!!!
#sony A7sIII ???

Potatoes.
Yep. It's a great video cam. Different from the A7iii/Riii
How to film a video on a Budget?
Proceeds to use a 700 $ gimbal and light the scene with an also very not low priced lamp.
By the way , besides the camera , this are the only two things you need to buy to make a professional looking film...
So yeah, this is not a low budget, because what you used to make that video is literally all you need to make a good looking movie xD
700 bucks is nothing.
That's like half a lens.
Amazing that you actually did and showed us and not just talked about how!!! 😁
This really helped me lessen the worry about making a music video assignment for my grade 9 son. Thanks.
