  • In this series I am showing how I made the Tucana costume. In this part I show you how I sew on the kangaroo leather feathers, and I show you the finished costume, plus some footage of Jazida performing while wearing it. Subscribe for couture sewing tutorials and inspiration. This costume has been commissioned by Michael Sollis as part of the Southern Sky Project and will be worn by burlesque performer Jazida.

Welcome to the world of Rockstars and Royalty. I’m Vicky. I have worked as a couture gown, corset and costume designer for over 20 years, initially under my label 'Devotion' in the UK, then as 'Rockstars and Royalty' when I moved to Australia in 2007. During this time I’ve become know for my elaborate couture gowns and costumes, my corsetry skills, and my love of sparkles and embellishments.
In my videos and tutorials I show you how I design and create the extravagant couture gowns, corsets and costumes that I've become known for, how I upcycle and style vintage and pre-loved clothes, and how I create accessories, hair, and make up to style and complete the looks.

I am glad you're still at this. Your tulle tutorial became a ballgown skirt I continue to use after 2 years.

Hopefully it will be used for a long time to come, and be seen by Jazida's audiences all over Australia and beyond. She still regularly wears all the costumes I made videos about years ago which makes me so happy ❤

Thank you. There's so many things that these feathers would work on 🙂

    Stunning!
I’m a stage performer with very little sewing experience, and I’ve always been intimidated by the prospect of making myself a bespoke garment and it keeps me from ever starting.
But watching your process has made me realize how much costume design can be approached like an engineering puzzle, which is WAY more up my alley! Especially the use of the leather feathers meaning you’re not dealing with a million hemmed/serged edges or the complexity of attaching (god forbid) real feathers.
Feeling really inspired to break out some of my sketches and consider materials that might not involve as much sewing! Thank you so much, and I’m excited to see the next project you share 🙌

Thank you. Sewing is very much like engineering, especially corsetry! There's lots of ways that you can create a unique costume without actually sewing. I'll try and do a 'no or minimal sew' costume video at some point. Adding to pre-bought clothing is a good way to get something unique without having to sew everything. Appliques, leather, and rhinestones can all be glued. This is great if you're on a tight deadline or tight budget too. I'm so glad my videos have inspired you to get creative. Have fun 💗

Could you do a video on how you figure out your pricing? Id love to know your process for how you work out the cost because this should be a million dollars with how much time and materials you put into it! Absolutely stunning work as always ❤

oh my gosh... i'm just gobsmacked... give me a minute... let me pick my jaw up off the floor, please... you are so incredibly talented... that is amazing design come to life... i could see this in lavender, red, pink, white, and silver (kind of a valentien's day look)... or maybe a flamingo... or a peacock with all the teals, greens, blues, purples and gold... so many birds to choose from... robin... bluejay... hummingbird... canary... quetzal... a white and silver one... ooooo even a multi gray one would be nice... so many possibilities... if you ever decided to do a collection of birds that is... i know the work would be insane... or it could be a lifetime collection you build... i look forward to watching more videos from you... thank you for sharing your amazing skill set with us all... please keep doing you... hugs from Dallas...

Thank you so much. The possibilites are endless! I've had a peacock idea in mind for a while, so this could very well be the start of a bird series! Hugs back at you from way over here 💗
