  • Sometimes a deal is just too good to be true! But when using an SD card in your camera, phone, video camera or other digital device, the data you capture and store is priceless. We'll prove in this video that Amazon is allowing FAKE SD Cards to be sold through their web site, and the sad thing about it is thousands of people fall for it, and lose their data. Don't be one of the victims: Watch and share this video!
LET ME BE CLEAR: This is not one product on Amazon.ca. Amazon.com lists many fake SD cards, and we are getting reports of both Ebay and Wish selling fake cards as well. Even if Amazon removes the one we reviewed, you NEED THIS INFORMATION. Like and share to protect your followers.
    -----
Here are the commands Robbie used to test the card:
    Install f3:
    sudo apt install f3
    Find the drive letter:
There are many ways to do this, but here's the cheap and chearful.
    With the drive NOT inserted:
    ls /dev/sd*
Observe the drive letters that come up.
Then, plugin the SD card/flash drive and run the same command:
    ls /dev/sd*
You'll see a new one: this is your drive. Eg., /dev/sdb in our demonstration. Ignore sdb1, sdb2, etc. - those are partition numbers.
Check what your camera would tell you about the drive:
sudo fdisk -l /dev/sdb (or whatever drive letter)
    Test the true drive capacity:
sudo ./f3probe --destructive --time-ops /dev/sdb (or whatver drive letter).
If you get an error that f3probe isn't found, you forgot to run the first command: sudo apt install f3
For Windows users, it's cat5.tv/usbtest to reach the blog post.

One of the problems with these cards is that people will receive it, put it into their device and when it shows to have the formatted 256 G will immediately go online and put up a good review. It might be months before they actually write over the 16 G level but still not know because they haven't tried to access any of the overwritten files yet.

Lol! I am a Mac user but when it comes to SD cards I also like a bargain:) So recently I did buy a very cheap 1TB fake Huawei micro sd card from eBay. Initially, I just wanted to store a few videos, not more than 30GB. I wrote about 25GB of data onto the card and all seemed well. However, when I removed the card from the computer and put it back again I was noticing that only about 18GB had been written onto the card. I kept trying and at one point I thought that my Mac was overpriced junk and not doing its job. I then decided to do more research on the problem and it dawned on me that the card was fake. I never thought that people could do this but hey, you learn something new everyday and thanks for spreading the message. Oh by the way in the past I also bought three 2.1TB usb thumb drives from Ebay for a pittance and all three never worked. I am now thinking of trading in my mac and use some of the money to buy a genuine memory card. Oh my poor Mac!

@Minecraft Tutorial King: That's wrong because the quality of silica makes a huge difference because 128GB is a UHD which means that it is made to be a hard drive for a computer not removable. If you inferior UHD in Android or Windows you can cause a lot of damage.

I'm too scared to order another one, as I can't afford to keep throwing money at fraudsters, even from Amazon it would seem now! Please can you suggest anywhere where I can be guanteed an actual genuine card?

Just a thought, Micro Center online have great 32GB micro SD cards made by them exclusively printed on card. I used 3 cards on my vacation in 2013. Did a test today by copying a 30GB file on to the card, no problems. Works on my 2014 Mac today.

I bought a fake 500 gb memory card from Amazon about 2 years ago !!!! I used my PC and it read the card and said it was 16 gb and the extra memory was corrupted. I formatted the micro sd card and it was still corrupted and was a 16 gb card. So Amazon has been selling fake cards for ages. I sent it back and got a refund. They immediately refunded me when I told them it was fake !!!!!!

If I need to know the device designation for a USB I'm about to attach, I'l do 'dmesg -w' in a terminal, plug in the device, and then watch the output. Thanks for demonstrating this. I'm installing f3 new as we speak. Very useful to know how to do this test.
By the way, your multiple audio sources aren't timed. When you switch sources between the live camera and the captured desktop video, there is a doubled audio glitch which implies that the audio coming in with the live camera is slightly behind the other source in sync.

As mentioned, there are similar tools available for Windows, but they take forever. Best instead to use Linux which is incredibly fast at this, as you see. You could install Linux and run the test in less time than the test would take on Windows. But yeah... you could do that... but it's not our recommendation. Linux FTW... Once again :)

The best advice for anyone is: never buy from a 3rd part Amazon seller. The only exception I personally make is for used media (games, movies, books) that are less than $10 and from sellers that are legit businesses that have been around for 5+ years.

    • @FuturesPast1
      @FuturesPast1 5 лет назад

What is messed up is that I heard that in the Amazon warehouses, legit products get mixed in with fakes. For example if you are buying from Amazon and fulfilled and shipped by Amazon you could still get fakes. What happens is the fake 3rd party seller's products are sent to the Amazon warehouses. Next to the product online, you will see 3rd party seller, but shipped and fulfilled by Amazon. That may make you trust buying the product.
Their products have the same UPC product code number as the sold and fulfilled by Amazon ones and all of them get put in the same bins and are mixed in together waiting to be shipped out.
I once ordered a "genuine" Belkin car charger for my cell phone on Amazon which turned out to be a fake. It blew the fuse in my car's dashboard and it cost me $250 to have the mechanic remove my dash to put in a new fuse.
This is why I do not buy any chargers, sd cards, make-up, vitamins, electronics, etc, from Amazon anymore. Amazon is turning into Alibaba.

Thanks Vaughan. Glad you enjoyed the video. It's as much a PSA as anything - we really want to protect the poor viewers who fall for such scams. At least having bought ours on Amazon, we will have no trouble returning it and getting our money back. Ebay and other sites would be more challenging. There's no getting data back though, so it's best to run this test (or similar) before using a new card that you're not 100% sure of.

I will look for this memory card on Amazon tomorrow and if I can find out where this seller resides, as long as they aren't in the US I will be taking tactical action against this scammer. Technically if you release the address and information of somebody in a foreign country, you can't get in any legal trouble. I heard isis wants someone else to mess with, Chinese scammers would be the perfect targets for isis.

The problem is that buyers do a simple test, put it in their cell phone
and then leave good feedback for seller. It may take weeks or months
before they notice that some or many photos are missing. Photos like
baby's first steps. dash cam video missing after an accident.etc, In
the meantime, others see the good feedback and buy more. Ponzi scheme.

Oops. You didn't really buy an Amazon store item at all, you bought an SD card from a third party seller called 'liqiren', upon which the middleman Amazon do little but pack and send it for them using those awful Amazon boxes :P Next time, click on where it says '7 new from xx dollars' or similar (in the right hand corner) to see a list of all sellers, select 'new', and look for the seller who is listed as Amazon. Even 'fulfilled by Amazon' are still third party sellers, even if they suggest a more trusted one. If there is no shop selling directly from Amazon, look for another similar item, as you are taking a big risk given a fair percentage of SDs out there are probably fake.
You have to make sure you know where you are getting it from, but generic SD cards (without a good brand name such as Kingston or Sandisk) aren't really worth chancing any data on. Fake cards sold officially by Amazon as the seller should be less common, and when found out should be faster to get refunds or replacements on. I would only buy an item where Amazon is the name of the seller or a high street store. I might chance a 'fulfilled by Amazon' seller since I can still check the card anyway with h2testw or a similar tool. With more important storage such as a hdd, I'd only ever buy from a website with a high reputation that deals specifically in computer products (not Amazon)

Checked seller, they had no address just a VAT number. Checked the number, the company wasn't registered. There could be legit reasons that they weren't registered but I thought im not gonna take the risk. Not worth the faff.

Amazon doesn’t just sell fake unbelievably cheap no-name cards. I bought a good quality Lexar 128GB card directly from Amazon, for a decent but not crazy price, that I’ve bought before and the one I got had a slightly different font and paint job on the actual card and packaging was slightly off. Just speed testing the card it was like 20MB/s compared to 150MB/s of my other ones. You don’t need Linux at all to test, I always burn in new cards with a quick speed test, usually fakes won’t be very fast to begin with and give you the first clue. Then I dump files on it up to the stated capacity to confirm. Even if it’s a real card it’s always a good idea to just test the card can actually be loaded up to capacity....

a few years ago i bought a 64GB sd card to increase storage on my phone. i shifted any apps that would move to it. after a few months i noticed there was occasionally a message that the card had a problem. restarting the phone would fix the problem. then one day i found my phone totally dead and couldn't get it to power up even on the charger. after removing the sd card it worked again. the battery had been totally drained. when i stuck it into my pc card reader it instantly blue screened. 64GB at the time was quite a high capacity and the highest my phone would support. i suspect this was a relabelled 4GB but since it was completely dead there was no way to run any tests on it. fortunately all i really lost was what i'd caught on pokemon go (which was all the rage at the time) i now have my phone automatically back up photos to google. i would never trust sd cards again

The problem is that sometimes you pay a regular or sale type price and still get cheated.

i had the worst experience from a fake sd card. purchased a 64GB one last year from ebay for my dash camera, had horrible car accident Feb this year,i survived from the accident but the 3rd party denied everything, the only solid evidences to support me should be all the videos on the sd car but only until recently, i was told that sd card more like to be a fake one. purchased 2nd one 2 weeks ago from another seller on ebay, just received it, i learned the lesson, just tested it, more likely is another fake one, i'm hoping i'll get my refund this time

I bought two Seagate 12TB IronWolf PROs. I was shipped two fake ones.
These were bought from Amazon.com Services, Inc and were labeled as new.
One has a fake label of a 10TB WD Red drive on it. The label is blurry and the printer must have been running out of ink.
The other has a fake 12TB IronWolf label on it. Whoever printed it stretched the aspect ratio out horizontally to fit the drive.
Just by looking at the shape of the drive you can tell it was the wrong one. Almost $1,000 of fake crap.

If a legit one, the package paper material is not easily torn by hand and also the inner package should be in a small hard plastic container/box not like a soft plastic made material type shown in this video. Thanks for the tips anyway. Appreciate it.

I've been looking online to buy a microSD card, preferable 256GB. The crazy thing is, there are so many sellers even on sites like Lazada and Shopee that sell them very cheaply, like $10 for 256GB!! Right there and then we have red flags. And then they have Samsung, SanDisk, Kingston and even.. Huawei! Take your pick! And here's the sad part: the folks who purchased them posted reviews swearing that they're authentic even if the font used for '256GB' on a Kingston packaging is obviously fake (many folks posted photos)! If you look further though, there are also many reviews saying their files got corrupted but recovered, they only got 8GB usable, etc., obvious signs that they're fake, and yet no one even mentioned that they thought they were fake!! Either the seller removes reviews that say they're fake or people are just stupid or in denial that they got swindled!! Be careful guys, if it's too cheap you know there's something fishy, even if the seller absolutely guarantees their authenticity.

The first and probably mkst obvious RED FLAG is that it said SDHC and not SDXC. SDHC is High Capacity and only tops out at 32GB. SDXC is Extended Capacity and is above 32GB.

ebay sold them too. Its the fault of amazon and ebay for not vetting or stopping known fraudulent sales. The fake card is a 2 to 4 gig card reprogrammed ot read 256 gig. It will record up to the 2 to 4 gig but then overwrites the original file size.
Windows users use the program h2testw1.4.exe. its a german program that will write a file on the card then read back the file to test for overwriting.

learned this the hard way. Bought 64 gb SD card for Samsung phone. It started corrupting pictures at 32 gb. Corrupted photos were trips with our family so needless to say my wife wasn't happy about this. This is one area to make 100% sure your getting legit SD card. Make sure your leaving negative feedback on amazon and ebay because this is big problem.

Be aware of positive complements addressing something else. For example they will this knife set is awesome yet it isn't a knife you're purchasing. I have seen this multiple times. They will also say awesome or great with no explanation of what they are talking about.

Lazada in Thailand sold me two fake Samsung cards. I paid a lot more than ten dollars. Ok should be able to get a refund but they don't seem to be concerned about stopping these people. They blocked my negative review. So more people are going to be cheated. It was a Samsung 128 gb Evo card

The largest SDHC card is 32GB. All cards above 32GB is SDXC cards. All alarms should sound. Dont waste 1 minute, and not 19 minutes on that question.
