"Gaucho (1980)" was the notorious Steely Dan's last hurrah before the Jazz-Rock die off of the 80's. The last infamous album that would kill the long-time partnership of Donald Fagen and Walter Becker for twenty years. After the struggles of "Gaucho", Steely Dan would cease to be it. It was a production cycle full of drama, drugs, and despair. Despite the devastation Gaucho left in its wake, its creation and cast is a story in itself. An album so selective it spawned a long forgotten and long desired bootleg twin. Why do then the most hardcore of Steely Fans whisper of this "Lost Gaucho".

The perfectionism on Gaucho particularly could rob the music of humanity. That can have its own charm though, one that's wonderfully Steely Dan.
All I know is I never tire of listening to all the albums. Each one is a masterpiece of imagination, lyric, and composition.

I'm a drummer and Babylon Sisters has been my favourite since childhood. That halftime shuffle has always been alluring to me.

Bernard Pudie's drumming is amazing on several Dan recordings. I'm afraid his talent is eclipsed by Fagen and Becker's use of WENDEL on Gaucho.
@@mackey-5438 Not sure about WENDEL on various tracks, but Porcaro played on the track "Gaucho" and that's definitely not WENDEL playing. The pocket is amazing and not remotely mechanical. Time Out of Mind is credited to Rick Marotta, but they used his samples in WENDEL.
The lyrics of Babylon Sister create an aura of Los Angeles in 1979 that is almost haunting. A classic, unforgettable, perfect song.

In my view, “Aja” is the Dan’s best album because of the inclusion of “Deacon Blues,” a recording of absolute perfection. But the entire run from “Scam” through “Nightfly” is the greatest stretch of music in modern history.

Deeply unpopular take here, but for me Gaucho will always be the "connoisseur's" Dan album. It's criminally, criminally underrated, and to me represents the absolute apex of their songwriting complexity, audiophile production perfectionism, and pop songwriting. It supersedes every aspect of every other great Dan album, even Aja.
I agree 100%, but let's be honest, we're getting into some pretty subjective areas here. That said, I also think Gaucho is better. To me the album is more cohesive in terms of music and theme. And Babylon Sisters . . . damn, if there ever was a more (deceptively) powerful opening statement I've yet to come across it.
@Gerry Berry Glamour Profession is my all-time favourite Steely Dan song. Bar none. The instrumental is so subtly complex and varied, shifting under your feet constantly, the lyrics are quintessential Dan, and it's catchy as all hell. It's just incredible, never gets old.
Edwin McLachlan I tend to agree. It was my “first” SD album, even though I was familiar w their music. It was the first I became intimately familiar w if that makes sense. Still big fan of Aja but for me Gaucho was the one.

For me, the definitive Dan album is The Royal Scam. I enjoy Gaucho, but find the tonal quality too clean, sterile even. There's just no warmth to it compared to Scam.
The Aja album was hard to top for Steely Dan. My most favorite from them. Although, I feel that Donald Fagen's Nightfly was brilliant.

Gaucho is my favorite SD album because it was so full of despair. They polished it so hard you could see the impurities. This is where their flaws became most apparent, and thus they were at their most real.
Even though "The Lost Gaucho" is officially a cumulation of incomplete recordings, they still remain "a high priority" for any Steely Dan fan. Like a "lost Mozart" , they are timeless examples that glimpse into the minds of genius.

My dad played Steely Dan for me and I ended up loving classic rock. I know have Aja, Pretzel Logic, and Countdown to Ecstasy on vinyl.

My dad played Babylon sisters for me while I was in high school, and now that I’m in college, steely Dan is my soundtrack. Every else is listening to Kodak black, not me.

Wow great story here. As one who loves THE DAN and grew up in So Cal in the 70's 80's Gaucho was an anthem for me and my buddies for sure. Just the intro to BABYLON SISTERS immediately transport me back to my days in Orange County
Steely Dan is the one band whom I never tire of; easily my favorite group/duo. How about some love for Everything Must Go? Very underrated.

"A Steely Dan Bedtime Story"
Once upon a time, there was a king, named Richard, who ruled Mizar. He fell madly in love with his darling, Rose. After a short engagement, they were married by a Deacon in a blue suit. They honeymooned near the caves of Altamira and did it again quite frequently without a fez. Night after night, it was a countdown to ecstasy. Soon, they were home at last, and in the months and years to follow, would have a castle full of show biz kids. Their first kid, a boy, was named Charlemagne. Later, daughters, Josie and Peg, would beautify the castle with their French twists. Rikki, their youngest, was a mathematics prodigy who never lost track of her numbers. The parents were strict with their daughters, but the girls didn't seem to care. The family would vacation by carriage to the sea and when the children got too loud, King Richard would say, "keep it down, just until we get out of town." During their holiday, the family would sit under a banyan tree and watch the sun go down on the crimson tide. They let the children play up on the hill near the black cows. The king, however, had a mistress at this seaside Eldorado resort. When confronted by Rose, Katy lied and said there was nothing to it. Katy was only nineteen at the time. Rose knew the fix was in. Later, Rose told King Richard that she knew of the affair and was planning on a trip to Haiti for a divorce. She said, "I can't cry anymore while you run around." Upon hearing this news, King Richard summoned his therapist, Dr. Wu. After a lengthy discussion about the king's infidelity, Dr. Wu responded, "the things you think are useless I can't understand." Rose, still reelin' from this news demanded, "I want to know everything you did." King Richard confessed to an affair with Katy's sister, Pearl. He defended himself by saying, "it was just a fling with a couple of skinny girls." King Richard hastily had his family return to Castle Bravo, coincidentally, at the changing of the guard. He met with his generals to discuss the expansion of his kingdom to new frontiers. He told them he wanted to be king of the world. Rose, however, took a gift from the king, a pair of green earrings, and threw them in the moat. She realized that she had been royally scammed. King Richard went to Rose's bedroom and told her it would never happen again, but she replied, "after what you've done, only a fool would say that." She gave him the goodbye look before she lit the candle and put a lock upon the door. King Richard, in a rage, threatened harm to their children by drowning them in the moat when he said, "I'll throw back the little ones." At that very moment, there was fire in the hole as the castle came under ambush by battle apples! King Richard became suicidal and thought about taking his life with a gun. His last words were, "Don't Take Me Alive!" The day after the king's demise, Rose had lunch with Gina, her best friend. They drank kirschwasser from a shell. Gina advised Rose to sell her home and move to a place called the Custerdome. The next day, Rose put a sign in front of the castle that read: Everything Must Go.

Impressive. That was extremely visual (I'll bet those were BIG black cows.) I myself met Steely Dan once ...sitting at the counter at Ruby's. He was VERY high. It was a cry'n disgrace. You should have seen his face 'cause he'd just got the news. But it was up on the hill, where people never stare. They just don't care.

Gaucho is my favorite album of all time and it saddens me to see it bashed so much. Thank you so much for making this video, I enjoyed every minute of it.
So glad I got to see Steely Dan before Becker died. This was back I like 2012-2013 when I was 22 or 23. Always will be one of my all time favorite groups
One thing for sure is they really did hire great players and background singers and the guitar player gave his all on the live shows it's hard to duplicate something that was created in the studio but that bandshould be given credit
Gaucho may seem like a strange mix but not for Steely Dan. It's just a culmination of experiences and their obsessive compulsive ways. I'm glad Donald and Walter got back together and went out on the road after 2 Against Nature. RIP Walter.

"Second Arrangement" is a real lost classic. The demo version is wonderful by itself.
I was enthralled by this track when I finally discovered it. I listened obsessively , to get every nuance. 93 chords, jazz fucking chords my fingers are bleeding. I can only imagine the real recording is in heaven, good reason to get there lol
A near complete version in high quality was found a few months ago.

"...a dollar three-eighty". Ha! I was working in a factory (on Long Island) from 79-81 and one of my co-workers said something in the voice of an old New Yorker that included this nugget: "a buck tree-eighty". I was then, and still am, an SD fan.
Do it again by Steely Dan is my favorite. What an amazing band.

No problem. Steely Dan is definitely one of my favorite bands and I find Donald Fagen and Walter Becker to be incredibly interesting individuals (I could make a video on each alone). This is a video I definitely made for myself and probably the dozen people in my audience who are Steely Dan fans. I would be happy if this got three views. There's also basically no in-depth videos on Steely Dan beside Polyphonic's two (which are more on their music, but still very good) and the old Aja Documentary which I recommend if you're a fan.
There's also no real Steely Dan communities as I can tell beside the Steely Dan reddit page and some posters on the Steve Hoffman forums. I hope this video will get others interested since, in Fagen's own words, most of Steely Dan's fan-base is "geriatric boomers". Maybe some one can post this vid to the Steely Dan reddit or some forum and give it a boost to others interested. I'd be interested in "veteran" opinions on the band.

Record companies are the devil incarnate. So many great bands and artists have had to suffer their evils.
Without the evil record companies, as you describe them....we would never have even heard of Steely Dan. Back then artists had to have the backing of a well established record label to fund their productions and marketing to gain airplay/exposure to a mass audience. The record labels had all the power and influence, not like it is now where artists can make their impact independently. I guess you could describe them as necessary evils.
Yet they used to be the only way for bands or artists to get heard. Without a label you had no radio time, no cassette, no vinyl, nothing.

Thanks for uploading this. Quite a revelation to learn all of this about my favourite Steely Dan album. I know that most consider Aja their masterpiece, but I've been hooked on Gaucho for decades. These fellows couldn't have made a bad album if they'd tried to. I love them all. I think the songwriting on Gaucho is beyond compare ~ completely captivating. My Rival? That just blows my mind. Aja is multi-flavored and brilliant. Gaucho has fewer flavours, but they're out of this world!! I knew nothing of Becker's heroin addiction and absence. It's been a captivating 26 minutes! Gaucho is the first Steely Dan album I ever acquired, a vinyl copy in mint condition around five years ago. Sounds phenomenal. I was already hooked after hearing the intro to "Babylon Sisters".

By the way, not sure how deep your research went specifically on Second Arrangement, but from my own research while trying to track down the earliest possible cassette copy of it known (still haven't), the first emergence of a recording dates back to October 1987 (Sourced from a Steely Dan Fanzine archive, which is currently down but can be found here web.archive.org/web/20190707092326/steelydanreader.com/1987/10/01/metal-leg-3/ ). The earliest online version which I also suspect is the same source we have now is from 2000 on web.archive.org/web/20000621080253/members.home.com:80/metzger/dan/sounds.htm , I've tried to find contact for the guy who ran the site but no luck.
Very interesting. I didn't look super deep into when the bootlegs showed up so this is pretty new to me. I know barely anything about music engineering, but would knowing when the other bootlegs from Gaucho showed up help (if you don't already)? Like knowing if it existed on any of the tapes with "Kind Spirit" and "Kulee Baba"? Though I suppose those could have been the other versions of it.
You could try tracking down Brian Sweet if possible since he seems to be the band's major historian, but I don't know how much help he would be. Or even Gary Katz or Steve Khan (I know Khan you can contact on his website, Katz I have know idea). Though I doubt they would know anything about the bootlegs or tapes.
I'll keep my eyes open for anything.
@@Pseudiom As for knowing when the other bootlegs came about, I think that there's 2 sources to the "Lost Gaucho" bootleg, one being the Second Arrangement 2nd demo tape that had other songs on it because of the bleedthrough when you turn up the high end on the tracks (the 2nd disc of the bootleg), and then a source what I assume to be a nice quality cassette or something else studio quality that's the first CD. I haven't researched any other specific tracks for their source, but I'll assume they were found together due to the phrasing of the Fanzine "Metal Legs" issue 3 that I linked.
I might try and contact Sweet, since he could be a help. While I doubt anyone who worked on the album would want to talk with me, maybe it's worth a shot. I'll investigate their contact info.
Which by the way, the whole reason why I'm trying to track this down is because I actually have a great cassette ripping setup that can do 24 bit 192KHZ rips, if I even find a bad X generation or whatever copy it'll still be better than the one out there now. Maybe one of the people you mentioned have a copy? Who knows!

10:10 Fagen is not instructing them to change the pitch of his voice, he is instructing them to change the volume of his voice in his own monitor mix (what he hears in his headphones while singing).

Wonderful video, and explanation.
There's an alternate universe out there where the stressful background and negative circumstances that occurred during production didn't happen and where Gaucho was a double album with two major hit songs, Hey Nineteen and The Second Arrangement. The track listing would flow between each song, creating a complex, sleazy yet intelligent musical tome of stories and exploits of its generation. If I could arrange the album, the last track would have been the title track Gaucho, a farewell from Donald to Walter disguised as a breakup song between two men, one younger and one older, just like previous tracks with heterosexual themes but subverting expectations of a more "normal" relationship for the time. I love Gaucho. It's like a smooth drag from a cigarette on a rainy night. Yet, I can't help but feel that it could have been greater and the existence of these scrapped songs highlights its potential.
the effort and distractions described in this documentary (which I do appreciate for a deep historical reveal of external issues) make me appreciate it more, as the effort is undetectable in the final product.
Your pronounciation of Gaucho was good. Many pronounce it the Brazilian way, stressing the U and making the CH liquid. You truly nailed the rioplatense way of saying gaucho.

The Steely Dan catalog of music is so full of complex yet captivating music that has somehow matched my change in taste as I`ve grown older. There are some songs I`ll never fully understand but that`s the magic.

CC has caught my attention but I haven't looked into them yet; which songs are their best?

I love Gaucho just the way it is! A great and one of my favorite SD albums. Sometimes I think people don't get this album. It's beautiful.

If you got the BEAR... OR THE BEAR GOT YOU!" Too bad we had to miss out on that instant classic but oh well... I feel "Gaucho" is the high-water mark of Steely Dan, the perfect album to usher in the 1980's, and Fagen's solo "The Nightfly" achieved everything such an alternate album could ever say and then some, anyway. I re-listen to both at least once a year and they still give me chills, again, when the moment is right; I feel they round out this part of their catalog perfectly...and I hope Donald Fagen might make maybe one more that even approaches this level of musical purity
Wow! I feel the same. When I last compiled my own list of best albums of all time, the ones you would want on an island, I would have to place THE NIGHTFLY at the top followed by Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band followed by Sunny Side of The Strip by George Shearing.

Walter and Donald were an intense musical duo with this sense of fun running underneath thank God we had them.
College radio tickled my 15 year old ears with Turn That Heartbeat Over Again. It just felt good to hear and unique. Since then every album and cd brought new and interesting avenues of audio pleasure. Im glad to have grown up alongside this music, and have been able to see them live so many times. Getting lost in a good tune, wishing it had more verses, and cranking the volume as it faded hoping it would go on................
I remember how AJA slowly confirmed my addiction to their music. I’m still strung out.

I'm planning on doing something on the "Fagen Trilogy" probably next December (since I'm pretty Steely Dan'd out right now). And I hope to do something about all the Steely Dan "Apocrypha" and forgotten songs eventually. I would like to cover Becker's stuff eventually, but its a bit harder to do a narrative arc through, but I may figure something out eventually. "11 Tracks of Whack" and "Circus Money" are both really underappreciated.

Apparently Steely Dan has played "The Second Arrangement" Live. I saw it on RUclips awhile back. I really wish they would officially release a Lost Gaucho Album
Great stuff, but I wish the audio editor of these videos would leave longer, more natural pauses in between the sentences of the narrator. It's exhausting to listen to. Give us a moment to absorb and process what he's just said.

I have always loved this band pretty much since I heard the hits on FM radio in the 80's. There are a few core groups that I have liked and listened to most of my 50 years and they are one of them. I remember turning 19 and putting on Hey Nineteen, and crying thinking about how old I was getting. Whenever I feel like hearing some music perfection I'll put on some SD and they are there for me.
