I made my holy Communion in May 1973 🙏🏼 I was gonna be 8 in June 73
So love watching young people of today experience this, just so enjoyed it,..your reaction says it all,..jaw dropped,. stunned speechless,..yess,..we know, same thing happened to us 50 years ago,..and I think I saw this back then, but before I even saw Winter and his band, heard him on radio,..that alone blew me away, hadn't heard anything like it before that,..Edgar and his brother Johnny,..extremely talented,..do keep going,..the 70's was all innovation, new instruments, trailblazers like Winter, so many,..Brothers Johnson, Isley Brothers, ELO(Electric Light Orchestra), Pink Floyd,..if it's from the 70's, you probably have never heard it, or the way it was played, constructed before,..Godspeed, Peace ✌
We finally got to see him and his band live about six years ago. What a great performer! He and his brother Johnny (who is a blues, rock guitarist) is together in a live performance of the song "Tobacco Road." Again playing multiple instruments and singing! Check it out, you'll love it!!

Edgar is the guy with the white hair. He's a very accomplished musician, and he's an albino. Albinism is a condition in which they have no pigmentation in their skin, hair and eyes. This makes them sensitive to sunlight. As you can imagine, an albino musician would mostly stay indoors, which gives them more time to learn their music. It seems that he learned very well.

in May 1973, being replaced by Paul McCartney´s "My Love". Frankenstein sold over
one million copies. The single was certified gold June 19, 1973 by the RIAA.

Edgar Winter is an astonishing talent. His brother Johnny was an incredible blues guitarist. Edgar’s tribute album to his brother “Brother Johnny” 2022 is also worth checking out.

This is from the 1973 OGWT show. I watched it as it happened. The fresh faced young guy on guitar is Rick Derringer who was a bit of a guitar virtuoso. He went on to have a solo career. Of course Edgar Winter himself was a multi instrumentalist of great ability. His brother was the great blues rocker Johnny Winter.

Musicians back then went to college music programs and practiced more--that's how they were able to create such awesome stuff.Nowadays, they don't wanna practice, can't afford lessons, depend on sampling and auto-tune, so they never develop the creativity

Yeah i grew up in the late 1960s & 70s and my God the instruments they used back then , the music it all was a treasure im so happy I grew up with thanks to my Dad RIP 🙏🏼🌹 and my older brother

Frankenstein so named because it came together in pieces and was originally called the Double Drum song while they were working on it. It shot to the top of the charts. Everyone in my group of friends were overwhelmed by how great it was. We had never heard of Edgar Winter or his older brother Johnny before. Edgar went to the top of the list and when they showed up the following year in concert, we couldn't wait to see them. The opening band was Rick Derringer and that is him playing guitar with Edgar. Then it was Johnny Winter. Then the headline - Edgar Winter. After that they all got together for a 2nd encore performance. Next up by Edgar from the same album -- FREE RIDE

Sarah, your reaction to this video is no surprise. I have yet to see anyone not be completely blown away by this. I have never ever seen a band in "The Zone" like this. They had been messing around with this tune for a few years by the time they recorded this and could probably played it with their eyes closed.
This live version of this song is a total experience. It blew me away the first time I saw it. Edgar Winter is very talented & plays many instruments including keyboards, saxophone & timbales. The title "Frankenstein" refers he fact that the original recording of the song was much longer than the final version & it required numerous edits to shorten it. So they spliced together many different parts.
I was 10 yrs old in 1973 and it took me awhile to save up enough money to buy the album "They Only Come Out At Night". b/c I just _HAD_ to have the uncut version on the album (as opposed to the chopped up radio version single). First album I ever bought.
I recently discovered that after playing it for his brother Johnny for the first time Johnny said" Very cool, what are you going call it?!!" To which Edgar pondered momentarily & answered" Frankenstein"

Edgar Winter is in a league of his own as a multi-instrumentalist. The number of bands he influenced directly or indirectly is stunning. He sort of invented the neck strap for the keyboard.

BTW - The name of the album is - They only come out at night - which refers to the the fact that Edgar and his brother Johnny are Albino and sensitive to sunlight. Sixties and Seventies: when rock music soared. I'd even call this piece jazz or fusion rock. The thing is, the more that one listens to this song the more that one digs its tune and looks for its flow from one peak to the next. Great choice, Sarah! Frankenstein is a Monster song!

The magic of analog keyboarde, Moog and sequential circuits, oscillators and modulators sawtooth waves.
I think Edgar used an ARP 2600. You can see him tweaking the filter like at 7:46. (Btw ARP 2600 also gave voice to R2D2.)
Loved your expressions during this...and after. :-) Edgar is a genius and his band were stellar. Another one to blow you away is Tobacco Road live with his brother Johnny on guitar. (Johnny is in the Blues Hall of Fame.) You've seen Edgar play instruments, now you have to hear him sing the blues. And after that, give a listen to Edgar's song Dying to Live...the most beautiful song you've never heard. I promise you won't be disappointed.
Sarah when I was 18 years old in 1981 I lived in north Jersey my friend and I took a ride up to greenwood lake and we were driving around the lake when we saw this bar and it was packed with cars outside so we stopped and fought our way in no charge to get in and we couldn’t believe it Edgar winter was set up on a little stage in the bar I’ll never forget that night when he played Frankenstein it was incredible
I was a preteen when this came out, and it was REALLY mind blowing then. 😁 Edgar Winter- keys, sax, and timbales, Rick Derringer- guitar, Dan Hartman- bass, and Chuck Ruff- drums, and still a great tune 50 years later. Just a suggestion, no need to do a reaction video, but check out "Rick Derringer Edgar Winter Frankenstein", it's another live video when they toured with Ringo Starr in 2010.

Have a look at other live performances from The Old Grey Whistle Test, which was UK’s best music programme in the 70’s.
It was a lot of fun watching your facial expression throughout. I saw this group do this on stage in '73. It was unbelievably impressive with the light show and the huge sound. You must remember that synthesizers were a new phenomenon and Edgar was one of the first to really get with it. You should also realize that this was the early seventies and many of us in the crowd were buzzed. Mind blowing, for sure. Edgar, and his brother, Johnny, were albinos. Johnny went on to be one of the greatest blues guitarists of that era. Edgar changed guitar players for the next album and tour so Rick Derringer joined the group while Ronnie Montrose went on to form "Montrose" a much harder rock band that had Sammy Hagar out front. If you want to hear Montrose's true virtuoso ability you should listen to Van Morrison's song "Wild Night" where Ronnie plays in a whole different style. Oh, by the way, if you want to hear Edgar's softer side, listen to the song "Autumn" off the same album as "Frankenstein". You'll love it. It's one of the most beautiful songs that you will ever listen to. Cheers!

Can remember listening to The Alan Freeman radio show Saturday afternoons here in England back in the 70's as a teenager. The first part of the crazy keyboard just after Edgar's first drum part would be played by Mr Freeman as a kind of ad/type show intro thing.

Every musician is the group is a genius! Edgar Winter is unbelievable. But as mentioned, the guitarist is Rick Derringer - who had a very successful career is a producer, guitarist, solo artist (Check our "Rock & Roll Hootchie Coo"). The Bass player is Dan Hartman, who in addition to singing lead vocals for most Edgar Winter Group tracks, was an extremely talented singer song writer who had several Top-40 hits. Drummer Chuck Ruff played for Edgar Winter, Sammy Hagar among others, and was also desired session drummer.
What you are watching is pure, unadulterated TALENT! Something very rare to find in modern pop music.
The stunned look on your face was priceless. The old grey whistle test was a British TV show that featured all the bands and musicians that were not mainstream including the amazing Bob Marley. The other show called Top of the pops only showed stuff that was in the pop singles charts. It was on late at night and my parents would let me stay up to watch it because I started playing guitar when I was 4 years old and then learned drums and keyboards. They realised that they should encourage me to learn real musicianship and not the kind of image driven crap that was in the charts. This show really stretched the boundaries of talent back in the 70s when I was 9 and upwards. Edgar and his brother Johnny are American and really stood out because they were both born with albinism, which is why their skin and hair is so white. ✌️♥️🇬🇧

Both Johnny and Edgar were both Albinos. Released in 1972 , but the radio play was a shorter version because of time limits. Edgar Winter, They Only Come Out At Night album. A Great album that you would really like.

Edgar's brother Johnny made it big first in the late 60's. There was a blues revival in pop music and there was some "controversy" about whether white people could play blues authentically. Along came Johnny out of Texas, whiter than white and the all time king of guitar shredders, the real deal. He had some issues and stopped touring for awhile and Edgar rose to the top and filled the void. They played together on a number of albums. Such an immense amount of talent in one family

Some say the song is a Frankenstein in its own right in that its made of up of so many different parts just as Frankenstein was made up of so many body parts, even his keyboard work where it made to simulate the (Growling and Stomping) sounds just like Frankenstein in the movie.

Frankenstein comes from a term that they used to describe a piece of music that has no connection to any song. They basically put together a bunch of 'frankensteins' to make this song.
