The Spartan Guard do more than twirl the flag. They protect Hot Ice and escort them during uniform changes as well as help provide a barrier between the crowd and the percussion section when they block.
Let's be honest if you've been a fan of hbcu marching bands over a certain amount of time. It has become very boring, especially on the field. It's all about cranking, No substance or balance. A quick little feature by the dance team. Bands like Norfolk, A&T, Hampton and a few others are refreshing in a sea of likeness. They have auxiliary teams that color the field, balanced sounds and thought out themed field shows. Most of the bands daring to be different exist outside of the SWAC. Yeah i said it. Y'all can keep that mess. Great job Norfolk! 💚💛
So glad to see a band drill and not just do step 2’s. No one marches like them. I went to Tuskegee university but been a fan of the Spartan Legion since I first saw them in 1987. If i can change anything it would be the tempo on the dancers number.
😅😅😅😅 no they wouldn't. There's a guy who's a well known percussionist who said the MD had the #1 multi tenor feature he's seen and that was above DCI and PWI lines. WT is not on the same level and more than likely won't get an invite to the PASIC because they aren't on that level of difficulty.

@liquidlightz it's because of the influence of funk drum sets not using tonals over toms. Most swac bands got their original drum section influences from funk drumming over using corpstyle things.
@@sordidC I realized that. But I'm basing my response on the comments I read on HBCU band pages for the past 20 years that they think that tonal drums is a white thing. These are things I've heard people actually say. If what you say is true then a lot of bands from BCU, Hampton, Howard, VSU, NC A&T, Shaw, didn't get the memo since they eventually transitioned to tonals and members of the Funk band Mass Production went to Norfolk State. Some even think that playing rudiments is a white thing. Mississippi Valley marched with tonals in the 80s but abandoned them to be like everyone else because they were considered by some in the SWAC as playing white. Pharrell Williams (a drummer in high school) said he was influenced to play music and make beats because of Norfolk's drum line and tonals and you can hear that in the music he makes (Busta What It Is, Grindin by the Clipse, Hollaback Girl) But refusing to add tonals because your fan base or alumni think your being white is the dumbest thing ever.
@liquidlightz that's not why Funk Train does. Funk, soul and jazz are part of Houston flavor with blues. That's the focus of Funk Train with a punch from the basses. I don't and plenty like me don't see tonals as "white".
Having seen the show with my own two eyes, in person, the average fan that was in Houston , which is the Deep South I suppose, gave Norfolk a standing ovation….so I’m not sure what you are trying to say…this is the second time for Norfolk being at the BOTB in Houston getting a standing ovation🤷🏾♂️…maybe you should have said “I don’t like them but other brethren in the Deep South seem to appreciate them and like their style and gave them LOVE”…maybe, just maybe an East Coast band that stresses musicality over loudness and features all of the talented students in its band, can entertain any crowd, anywhere because they just did the same thing in California in the Rose Parade and Band Exhibition there and those crowds were lily white
@troystrong8041 the comment is not a slight to NSU or east coast bands. Just compare the crowd response at their games to the crowd response at games in the deep South.
