  • Yesterday I visited my favorite railfanning place in Pittsburgh once again and got a lot of good actions and catches between 10 and 4. Hope you enjoy!
Train #1: On the way to Homestead, I passed over a reversing AVR train after getting onto PA-837. Couldn't see the engines too well, but they might have been SD40-2/3s.
Train #2 (0:07): My first train at the old Homestead Depot. An NS intermodal goes by with an RS5T Dash 9. Again I was tricked into thinking it was an ex-Conrail before seeing the high ditchlights..
    1. C44-9W #9378
    2. C44-9W #9582
Train #3 (3:36): Not long after, an NS coal train goes by.
    1. C44-9W #9933
    2. ES44DC #7519
Train #4 (6:19): The first CSX of the day happens to be an singlestack intermodal.
    1. ES44AH #990
    2. AC4400CW #361
    3. AC4400CW #269
Trains #5 and 6 (9:53): An NS coal train slowly comes around the bend with a Tier 4 duo. Around the same time, an eastbound intermodal heads our way with nothing really special.

    1. ET44AC #3623
    2. ET44AC #3647
    NS intermodal
    1. AC44C6M #4048
    2. C44-9W #9570
Train #7 (18:02): An NS intermodal goes east with an SD70ACe leading and an old logo SD60M trailing. Normally I'd prefer the SD60M to lead, but I'm fine I already caught this one leading 194 in Elliston back in May.
    1. NS SD70ACe #1094
    2. NS SD60M #6804
    3. NS ES44DC #7554
Train #8 (22:02): I had just shut my camera when the gates went down again. A westbound NS manifest speeds around the corner with a one unit wonder GEVO.
    1. ES44AC #8184
Train #9 (24:26): An NS manifest goes east with a repainted UP SD70M leader?! Now how the hell did a UP SD70M lead on an NS cab signal route? I know UP engines have cab signals too, but they usually don't work on other cab signal lines (unless they were reprogrammed of course, but I couldn't see them doing that just for one trip). Sorry if I was caught off guard, I expected this to be on CSX since an eastbound was due and that the K3LA sounded like a foreign power.
    1. UP SD70M #4236
    2. UP AC4400CW #6539
    3. NS SD40-2 #3343
    4. NS ES44DC #7609
Train #10 (27:29): Nice! A CSX autorack train goes east with an uncommon SD40-2 leading! This also happens to be the one Houston Rail Productions caught leading a long time ago. I was calling my dad asking when he'd be here with the inverter so I could recharge the camera, and when I asked where he was, he said he was at the crossing, but was stuck (the NS gate goes down when the CSX gates do).
    1. CSX SD40-2 #8199
    2. CSX AC4400CW #28
Train #11 (34:48): Another NS intermodal goes by with a P3 Dash 9 leading.
    1. C44-9W #9321
    2. C44-9W #9635
Train #12 (37:50): Another NS intermodal passes by. Teduka from Eight Marbles would be happy if a lot of these intermodals carried tennis equipment (and if the leader was 6 digits up).
    1. NS C44-9W #9753
    2. NS C40-8W #8407
Train #13 (41:17): Another westbound NS coal train goes by Homestead.
    1. C44-9W #9688
    2. SD60E #6997
Train #14 (43:39): A very short westbound CSX autorack train passes by. This was puny compared to the other autorack train which was very long
    1. ES44AH #3106
    2. ES44AH #936
Trains #15 and 16 (44:36): An NS intermodal goes west with Lazy Cameron from ROHV leading. If he falls asleep on this job, Mr. Edwards will hear about it. Surprisingly, the engine one digit away from him is trailing. Then he gets into a race with a westbound CSX coke train.

    2. ES44AC #8110
    CSX coke train
    1. AC4400CW #55
    2. ES44AC #828
(49:08) Then an NS hi-railer crosses Amity Street.
Train #17 (49:40): Could be the best catch of the day? Another Buffalo and Pittsburgh coal train passes by, but the third unit is another G&W subsidiary that's not BPRR. It happens to be an ultra rare SD70M-2 from the P&W! Seems like the engineer gave me a couple extra horn toots.
    1. BPRR SD40-3 #3341
    2. BPRR SD40-3 #3330
    3. P&W SD70M-2 #4302
Train #18 (53:21): An NS intermodal goes by with another old logo 60M trailing. Does the leader's nose looks unusual, or it is me?
    1. NS C44-9W #9736
    2. NS SD60M #6765
    3. NS C44-9W #9497
Train #19 (56:11): A westbound CSX mixed freight passes by the depot. This was my last train at this location, and my parents were on the other side of Aldi's coming to get me when this passed by.
    1. AC4400CW #507
    2. ET44AH #3355
Train #20 (59:51): My other best catch! As were driving away from Homestead, I noticed an Alleghany Valley train going by with 4 engines (including almost all of the GP40-3s and the only Road Slug) and not too many hoppers. I finally got my first actual AVR catch, and I can now say I caught all of the railroads that go through Pittsburgh!
    1. GP40-3 #4001
    2. GP40-3 #4004
    3. GP40-3 #4005
    4. Road Slug #405

Cool catches, Gordon. I remember UP 1943 once lead an OCS on the Pittsburgh Line with reprogrammed cab signals.

Thanks. Yeah, they're rare for the P&W, but I never thought I'd get one on the BPRR. And cool.

You seem to get better catches than me when I'm down there Railfanning. Also to let you know that NS 8102 keeps going going on the Mon Line if your interested.

Unfortunately I won't be getting that. That was the only day I railfanned in Homestead, and I just now got back to Richmond. My main reason for going there was to visit family.
